He cares for the sparrows and He cares for us. Let us remember this and pray that we will be worthy of the value God places on us. When I venture outside in the coming days and hear the birds singing, I will be reminded of this scripture and God’s unending love. I will recall the song lyrics that I love, “His eye is on the sparrow and I know he watches me” Is Spring around the corner? Are the birds singing yet? This crazy Alabama weather can keep us in suspense this time of year. And lately Spring seems to just peek at us every few days. A Milk Carton Birdhouse

Here’s a great reason to drink your milk. When you finish you can make a birdhouse! Things you will need: Empty milk carton (rinse out thoroughly and let dry) • Masking tape • Brown shoe polish • Scissors • Ice pick or Phillips head screw driver • Small straight branch • Twine INSTRUCTIONS: Q Cover your entire milk carton with 4– 5 inch strips of masking tape. Overlap them for better coverage. W Next, apply the brown shoe polish with a sponge or a soft cloth. Make the outside of the birdhouse look like tree bark by dabbing and rubbing the polish over the tape covered carton. Cover your birdhouse completely and let dry. E Cut a hole in the front center, 4 inches up from the bottom. Use a small lid to trace a circle before cutting. An adult should cut out the hole with scissors or a small precision knife. R Poke a small hole on each side of the carton, about 4 inches up from the bottom for inserting the branch. The length of the branch should be long enough so that it creates a perch on each side after sliding through. If you look through the large hole in the front, you can see the perch inside too. T Poke 3 small holes on the bottom for drainage and 2 small holes on the top so that the birds can breathe. Y Poke 1 hole through the very top peak of the carton in the center. Run your twine through the hole. Make sure the length will be long enough hang the carton from a branch. U Decorate your birdhouse with a Home sweet Home sticker if you like. Wrens, tree swallows, and bluebirds prefer making their nest in an enclosed birdhouse like this.

How to prepare your children for their future. This option may surprise you! By Susan Hooks

Since your daughter’s birth, you’ve been saving money for her education to ensure she has enough for those meaningful events in her life… After all, that’s what responsible parents do, right? We prepare our girls to be independent and self-reliant above all. When my daughter left for college, my heart swelled with pride, excitement and hope and a little trepidation…Will she do well, is she ready for all that freedom? Other mothers have told me they have experienced the same feelings. We all realize there is more to preparing for adulthood than academic education. I believe that all kids who spend at least a part of their summers at summer camp, are better prepared for later decisions that help them make the best life for who they are. Why? Kids of all ages need mentors they can trust who are separate from their parents. Parents need those mentors to be a support system that will enhance their child’s life. These role models provide guidance and help them make see life as an opportunity to greatness by helping them lay the foundations they need now! As a Camp Director for over 30 years and as a parent of now adult children, I understand now more than ever that children, even as adults, will always “need” their parents, and a parent’s goals should include giving their children the opportunities to successfully prepare for independence. Camping is one of those safe venues for this kind of growth. I have seen campers begin camp as early as five and a half and as late as their teen years who continued to camp for years and continued to return to Riverview to be on staff because of the supportive environment that offered adventure, inspiration, character and confidence-building. While some may view this opportunity as parents getting rid of their kids, most parents who understand the values and concept of residential camping are counting on the investment to set their children up to be a more independent and confident person. They are so right. “Camp is a game changer” explains Dr. Lori Hart from Atlanta GA, who is a part of the orientation training for the Riverview Staff. Dr. Hart believes that camp teaches children how to grow up, take responsibility, and learn about meaningful relationships outside their “local friends”. Often before attending camp, children will not have significant relationships that they view as “important” and in fact, most don’t even know what it means to have the friends that camp brings…lifelong friendships. Campers do not have to be “cool” at camp because they can truly be themselves and be accepted. Camp is the often first place and time that campers are apart form their parents, that self-esteem is boosted, confidence increases and they find time to learn about investing themselves in things that matter. An interesting thing happens at camp when kids are allowed to experience the camp community. The rules change. Everything changes. Authenticity is rewarded. Responsibility is cool.
