Local Women Take Center Stage at UTC A phone call came in from the Macy’s corporate office in Miami. They were looking for local women to model in the Macy’s grand opening fashion show at the new University Town Center mall in Sarasota and found our very own SWAT Networking — Successful Women Aligning Together — online. The women of SWAT were provided with professional makeup from Estee Lauder, Bobbi Brown and Lancôme, hair from “Fringe Salon,” and wonderful outfits from different departments in Macy’s. Much to their surprise, they walked the runway with professional models and had David Bromstad, a star of HGTV, as their emcee. SWAT Networking, which has six chapters all over Manatee and Sarasota, from Parrish to Nokomis and from Anna Maria Island to Lakewood Ranch, has grown to more than 200 professional women. Shifting Perspective To Get On Track It’s no secret we struggle with issues differently. We each feel our own unique pressure to be the perfect mom, perfect daughter, perfect girlfriend or wife, or perfect employee or friend. In striving for this idea of perfection, we often develop some really unproductive ways of coping and meeting our own needs. The pattern takes a toll on our bodies and we react with overwhelm until just the thought of trying to get things back on track feels like another thing to add to the bottom of the evergrowing to-do list. But what if getting things back on track was really the easiest, most pleasant thing you do all day. Would you bump it to the top of your to-do list? It doesn’t cost anything but a breath, a few blinks, and some neurons. It’s called “Shifting Perspective.” Sure, we’ve all heard of it, but none of us really knows how to do it. So here’s a quick refresher: Relax and remember, you are perfect, whole and complete - just the way you are right NOW. This is how you came in to the world and everything above and beyond this is an illusion – yours or someone else’s. You are doing the best you can given your resources. Take a breath and a break. Slow down and respond to what’s going on around you, instead of reacting. The body will run the “react” pattern when triggered but you can interrupt the pattern with a breath. This break brings you back to the NOW, allows your body to calm and your mind to receive new insight and resources. Trust you can handle anything. When you are in the NOW, your subconscious mind remains open to new information, ideas and solutions. The more time you are in this

Nutri Lifescience Offers Bergamonte Nutri Lifescience, a leading maker of premium and natural nutritional products, in Bradenton has launched Bergamonte to support cardiovascular and endocrine health, plus improve blood glucose management. Among other positive results, the researchers found that doses of rosuvastatin and Bergamonte together reduced total cholesterol, LDL-C, the LDL-C/HDL-C (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) ratio and urinary mevalonate in patients that had concerning levels of blood fats, compared to the control group. Those that took Bergamonte extract alone showed considerably better results compared to those treated with rovustatin alone in terms of improving HDL-C and reducing triglycerides.

The Panama Canal Experience Although we live in paradise, when it comes to vacation time, many of us like to get away and explore the fabulous world and all it has to offer. Travel opens our eyes to diverse cultures and broadens our experiences. For a spectacular experience, try celebrating life along the Panama Canal. On a recent cruise, we discovered the best of both worlds. We were fortunate enough to get an up-close view of human ingenuity and the diverse ecosystem that surrounds the region. Many feel the Panama Canal should be recognized as the eighth wonder of the modern world. For those interested in its amazing engineering, perhaps a glance at its history would be helpful. The Panama Canal, a key conduit for international maritime trade, is a 48-mile ship inland waterway that joins the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Annual traffic has risen from 1,000 ships at its inception to 15,000 vessels today. The Canal, one of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, had an enormous impact on shipping as it replaced the long and treacherous route between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A ship sailing from New York to San Francisco via the Canal only travels 6,000 miles compared to the 14,000-mile route around Cape Horn, the southernmost tip of South America. Almost one hundred years after it first opened in 1914, the Panama Canal is finally maxed out. Designed before the Titanic was on the drawing board and while the Wright brothers were still learning to fly, the Canal now handles more traffic than its builders could have ever imagined. These so-called “Panamax ships” carry the bulk of the cargo that transits the Canal. Today, ship builders are constructing bigger vessels, known as “Post-Panamax ships”, which cannot fit through the current Canal. Panama cannot afford to let the Canal become obsolete. So in 2006, the country’s voters approved a $5 billion plan to modernize and double the Canal’s capacity. Beyond the engineering marvel of the Panama Canal, a visit to the region affords a great opportunity to view the Central American rainforest. This diverse ecosystem with its rich display of plant life is home to many species of animals. Cruise lines offer various itineraries to the Panama Canal.
