There are many charities in need of help during the holiday season and throughout the year. We encourage you to find one that is close to your heart and give back this season! MEALS ON WHEELS PLUS OF MANATEE - Since 1972, Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee has been providing nutritional assistance and supportive services to individuals in their homes or in centers, helping them to continue to live independently. Over 60 percent of their funds must be raised through donations and grants. Info: www.mealsonwheelsplus.org or 747.4655. THE BLESSINGS BAGS PROJECT - Recognizes the needs of the growing local homeless population in Manatee County, particularly young families with children. Each month, hotel-sized toiletries and snack-size, nonperishable food items are collected, sorted and bagged to be distributed at local service centers like Turning Points. Special fabric bags are sewn by “angel” volunteers for children and include a Beanie Baby, a small toy, and essentials. Info: www.theblessingbagsproject.org. MANATEE COUNTY’S MARINES TOYS FOR TOTS - Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. Info: 713.3590. iPROMISE - Luhrsen Law Group, a Sarasota-based personal injury firm, initiated its iPromise Pledge to help prevent the recent and growing epidemic of texting and driving crashes. As part of the iPromise campaign, teens and their parents mutually pledged not to text and drive and are entered into $1,000 scholarship drawing at the end of each bi-annual campaign. Since early 2014, nearly 700 teens and parents have made the pledge and the firm has given away 11 scholarships. Info: www.Luhrsen.com. COMMUNITY SHOEBOX DRIVE - Gifts of toiletries, trinkets and small necessities are packed in a decorated shoe box and delivered to a homebound senior through Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee. The goal is to provide a gift for 1,000 seniors this year during the holidays. The group invites you to join them on Dec. 14 at the Ranch Grill in Lakewood Ranch for its community reception for the program. 10 Simple Tips to Keep Extra Holiday Pounds Off Your Hips
The holidays are upon us ... with Halloween candy and Thanksgiving behind us, and Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s Eve before us, the recipe for weight gain is before us! For many people, a gain of 5 to 10 pounds is common during the holidays. However, getting the weight off can be a challenge. Here are some tips to prevent weight gain this year. 1. Don’t deprive yourself. Just have three luscious bites instead of three pieces of pie. Studies show that the more deprived a person feels, the more preoccupied they become with food. 2. Find five slimming, healthy recipes to take to potluck holiday dinners. Potluck dinners can be a dangerous place if you are trying to lose weight. With a little creativity, you can make an addition to the buffet that tastes good and is healthy.
3. Take a brisk walk after eating that holiday meal. Doing this with family, is a great way to talk, laugh and burn some of those calories that were consumed. 4. Have a healthy snack before a holiday dinner so you don’t eat so much. Snacks have gotten a bad rap for ruining appetites, but it’s a charge that is undeserved. Snacks can actually help curb your appetite so that you don’t overeat. The right kind of snack, can regulate blood sugar and keep hunger pangs at bay. 5. Eat regular meals. During the holidays it is often tempting to skip meals. However, if you eat regular meals, you allow your body to maintain a consistent blood sugar level. Starving yourself all day and then eating all night is not an effective weight loss plan. 6. Sleep 7-8 hours each night. Studies have proven a link between sleep deprivation and weight gain. People who don’t get enough sleep often have a challenge curbing feelings of hunger. 7. Plan what and how much you will eat at parties. If you have a plan, you will be able to enjoy the party and meet your self-imposed expectations and goals. 8. Drink water – It has zero calories and can prevent mindless eating.
