F
or the third time in a decade, South Carolina ranks FIRST in the nation for the number of women murdered by men, per annum. Although this sounds more like fiction, the statistics are a hard fact. My Sister’s House, Inc. is a real non-profit organization, located in Charleston, S.C., which serves Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties. Women and children in immediate danger from verbal, emotional, physical, or sexual abuse are eligible for services at no charge. The organization provides 24-hour temporary emergency shelter and a crisis line to victims of domestic violence in addition to group and individual counseling, children’s programs, outreach programs and a host of other services. My Sister’s House, Inc. strives to improve community awareness of and an appropriate response to the devastating effects of domestic violence. In 2013, My Sister’s House touched the lives of 4286 clients, answered 2043 crisis calls, supported 462 advocacy cases, hosted 1584 participants in our outreach programs, made 2526 referrals, sheltered 197 women and children, and spent 84 cents of every dollar raised on programs and services for our clients. In order to provide a safe, more spacious environment where victims can not only make decisions but also take action to make those decisions 6
a reality; a new facility is the next large endeavor. At 9500 square feet, the current shelter accommodates up to 36 residents and the new facility would accommodate 46. No waiting lists! It is clear that a new facility is not just a “want” but rather a “necessity” in our continued efforts to help victims, to educate the public, and to eradicate abuse. Currently, we are in the process of launching a 3.5 million dollar capital campaign to raise funds for the project. We invite you to visit our website at www.mysistershouse.org to learn more about our organization’s mission, programs, services, needs, and upcoming events and fundraisers. Then, please consider making a donation at www.mysistershouse.org/ donate. Your contribution will make a significant difference in the lives of so many women and children, who have chosen to flee an abusive, potentially life threatening situation. Please help us in our mission to provide a “home away from home” for victims who long to feel safe and secure. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

5 Tips To Help Balance Your Hormones Naturally By LaDawn “Khetnu” Frasier
W
hen it comes to being a woman, there is nothing more significant in our lives than the constant change in our hormones. Our hormones affects everything from our moods, our weight, and even our bowel health. As women, it is essential that we maintain hormonal balance to not only boost our health but to maintain our mental well-being also. If you have been dealing with symptoms like constant fatigue, skin issues ( read adult acne, uneven skin tone), weight gain, excess weight around the abdomen, hot flashes, trouble sleeping, infertility, low libido, endometriosis, PCOS, or other reproductive issues, there is more than likely a great chance that you are dealing with some type of hormone imbalance. Hormones are the body’s chemical messengers that travel through the bloodstream to the tissues and the organs. They play an important part in many of the body’s different processes to include: • Sexual function • Mood • Metabolism • Growth and development Your endocrine glands, are the special 10
groups of cells that make the hormones in the body. The endocrine system consists of the pituitary gland, the pineal gland, the thymus, the thyroid , the adrenal glands and the pancreas. As women, we also produce hormones in our ovaries. Hormones are produced in the body by using good fats and cholesterol. When we consume a diet that is not filled with these important dietary factors, this can cause a hormone problem because the body isn’t being supplied with the essentials it needs to make the hormones. The endocrine system is a very complex one, but there are some ways we can assist it in functionally properly or help it get back into balance naturally. 1. Limit Caffeine. I know you love your Starbucks or you need that extra jolt to help you get started in the morning, but too much caffeine in your body is not good for your delicate endocrine system. Caffeine raises cortisol levels in your b o d y. Cortisol stops fat from burning in your body and can pack unwanted fat onto your midsection. If you simply can’t avoid drinking coffee, try adding 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to each cup and then blending it in the blender. Think of it as a healthy Latte! 2. Get more rest! If you are not getting at least 6 hours of sleep at night, I can almost guarantee you that your hormones are not balanced. When we sleep, that is when the body repairs and

rejuvenates itself. Once the body is denied this opportunity to repair itself, then your body’s systems are compromised. To get more rest try: turning out the lights, stick with a consistent bedtime every night, keep the bedroom at 65 degrees or below, don’t watch tv or surf on your cell phone right before bed. Magnesium is a great supplement to take that helps to contribute to better sleep ( which is great for your hormones). 3. Avoid Polyunsaturated Fats. The human body is not meant to consume the man- made fats found in the popular vegetable oils. They are highly unstable and they actually oxidize easily in the body which causes inflammation and mutation in the body’s cells. So stay away from soybean oil, margarine, shortening, and peanut oil. Choose healthier fats like coconut oil, REAL Butter, and olive oil (preferably unheated). 4. Avoid Toxins. Household chemicals, pesticides, and even plastics…yes plastics contain hormone disrupting chemicals that mimic the hormones in the body and they keep your body from producing the actual hormones that you need. Cook in glass or non- coated ( no Teflon or non stick) pans. Drink from glass water bottles. Invest in a water filter. 5. Take Great Supplements. As a certified holistic health practitioner I would be remiss if I didn’t suggest some herbal protocols for you to utilize to help you balance your hormones. Some of my favorite supplements that I sell that are great for hormone support include: • Maca Root: This root from Peru has a history of boosting hormone production and libidio. It has helped my
clients with increased fertility, lessened PMS symptoms, improved skin, and better sleep. It is high in the needed essential fatty acids, and in minerals…both which your hormones need. • Vitamin D: Yes , Vitamin D is produced by the sun , but surprisingly, most people are Vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D is a great supportive supplement for hormone function. • Doterra Solace Essential Oil Blend: dōTERRA Women’s Solace is a proprietary blend of Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils that have been traditionally used to balance hormones and manage symptoms of PMS and the transitional phases of menopause. Solace is a topical blend of Clary Sage, Lavender, Bergamot, Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Fennel, Carrot seed, Palmarosa, and Vitex that provide temporary respite from cramps, nausea, hot flashes, and the emotional swings sometimes associated with regular hormone cycles in women. Know that you can’t balance your hormones overnight, but by implementing some of these tips into your lifestyle, you should start to see changes with consistent use. The main ways to balance your hormones naturally are through lifestyle changes and specific foods, nutrients, herbs and a positive outlook. watching TV, I saw Isaiah Austin, a star basketball player who was days from being drafted to the NBA, when doctors told him that he had a rare genetic disorder (Marfan Syndrome) that affects his heart. When faced with the news, his mother’s response was, “You either make this your excuse or you make it your story.” Austin says he now has a responsibility and platform to educate and assist people about the disease who may have fewer resources. 12

None of us know what tomorrow holds, so it’s important that we don’t allow ourselves to become complacent with what we do for a living. You are more than your current job. What is it that you enjoy doing so much that you would do it even if you didn’t get paid? Why not put yourself out there and start doing it part-time. In Savannah We All Scream for Ice Cream!
A
By: Mary E. Gallagher
ny reason or season is a good time to visit Savannah a beautiful, historic and fun city. You can come for one of Savannah’s world famous festivals like the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, a weeklong celebration that draws thousands of revelers (Irish or otherwise!) or aim for a quiet mid week escape. Some of my favorite attractions are Forsyth Park and its‘landmark fountain, the historic and architecturally important Mercer House, perhaps the finest example of Italianate building design in America as well as the main setting for the best selling book by John Berendt “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, and the Andrew Lowe House another Italianate style house by significant “Yankee” architect John Norris and the home of Juliet Gordon Lowe founder of the Girl Scouts of American. Other interesting sites can include Mickve Israel Synagogue which strangely has a Gothic style design not often associated with synagogues, the art galleries at Savannah College of Art and Design, author Flannery O’Connor’s childhood home, Bonaventure and Walnut Grove Cemeteries and just exploring the cities beautiful 22 squares. There are several ways to take in Savannahs endless attractions and we tend to use them all depending on the length of our stay. Walking is the first choice and the best way to view the architecture and gardens while absorbing the ambience of this city. Pedi cabs can be used for going to and fro or drivers will give specialized tours. There are trolleys and horse drawn carriages with costumed guides relaying all the history as well as the gossip and nuances a historic site can hide. Enjoy the cooling breeze of a Savannah River cruise while viewing Savannah from the water. Whether you have a few minutes to a full
day you’ll easily find a fit with one of these vendors. Next, let’s do some fun shopping on Broughton Street, Bay Street or follow the Savannah River along Factor’s Walk and venture into the charming side streets. Shopping can work up a bit of an appetite so now it’s time for a very BIG reward as you slide into Leopold’s Ice Cream at 212 E. Broughton Street. Leopold’s is a wonderful up-dated replica of the original 1920’s ice cream store founded by three immigrant brothers from Greece: George, Peter, and Basil Leopold. When the original shop closed in 1969, Stratton Leopold, youngest child of Peter, kept many of the original fixtures in storage while successfully pursuing his personal dream of working in Hollywood. In 2004, Stratton and his wife Mary officially reopened the legendary family business. The original fixtures Stratton had kept were used, including the black marble soda fountain and wooden interior phone booth. Posters and props from Stratton Leopold’s film career are placed around for added interest. Leopold’s VeriBest™ ice cream is made on the premises and there are usually 24 regular flavors plus specials that can include Chatham Artillery Punch Sorbet, Dutch Utopia, Guinness, Japanese Cherry Blossom and more. If you need more sustenance than ice cream they serve fresh soup and a large variety of sandwiches including Shrimp Salad featuring fresh local shrimp. The atmosphere is great and everyone has a smile on their face before, during and after eating here.
