Children’s sports can educate parents! It’s an animal instinct… protecting our young from being preyed upon. But when it comes to competition, we all know parents that take this to the extreme! Here’s some quick guidelines to understand when your child is involved in sports: 1.
Yes, the other team always seem to have players much larger and older than your child’s team!
2.
Referee and Umpires are not PERFECT people, so inaccurate calls are possible. That’s really no different than in professional sports!
3.
Coaches do the best they can… Instead of criticizing their effort you’ll be a better team parent by volunteering to help!
4.
Your child does not require “parent coaching” while your team coach is attempting to do their job!
In many sports, parents can be ejected for improper conduct. We’ve all seen parents that we feel fit that mold. Moreover, what type of “example” does it set for our children when parents criticize the coaches, the officials and even fellow team members? Parents must recognize their own “self-satisfaction” is not the purpose for kids in sports. Yes, we all want our team to win… but we also want our children to learn to be a good team player, conduct themselves properly and recognize the challenges of accepting a loss or celebrating a win. Even professional players shed tears after a loss, but they don’t need a parent to get involved! Be part of the solution, not the problem! Lead by example and let the kids learn from their experiences! - Rick
