Tips for Sticking to Your Resolutions So it’s that time again when we are filled with enthusiasm to make great changes in our lives – exercise more, eat healthy, take that trip, declutter the house. Yet within weeks we find ourselves drifting back into our old routines and before we know it we are at New Year’s eve again! Well this year can be different. Here are 6 tips to help you make those goals a reality. 1) Realize that New Year’s day is just another day. While it’s a convenient time because it’s a new year and therefore feels like a new beginning, placing too much emphasis on it being a brand new start of the day your whole life is going to change is unrealistic. Think of the occasion more as a catalyst for change and a jumping-off point. 2) Be realistic. Choose an area that you know needs improvement rather than a radical change. Think long term and make sure it’s something you can realistically see happening. And reduce the amount of resolutions you make to just one or two. 3) Write them down. Writing down the resolutions creates a greater connection between your thinking self and your doing self and makes the resolution appear more real than if you simply think it in your head. 4) Get some support. Tell a friend or your loved ones whom you trust about your resolution. They will provide you with support and keep you focused on your goal. And if you are wavering at all, their support will ensure you don’t give up, just in case you feel like a quitter. (This really works Ed) 5) Review progress and adjust. Break your resolution down into stages so you can track your progress. Look back after a couple of months and see what you’re doing right and what you need to tweak. Maybe adjust the time you plan on doing something towards your goal to better fit your schedule. 6) Celebrate your success. Celebrate your successes, but make sure the way you celebrate doesn’t go against your resolution. If you cut down on drinking alcohol, clearly it’s best not to reward yourself with a glass of wine. Here is some information to get you started with understanding tablets. What are tablets? A tablet is a flat device that you can use like a computer. It does most of the things you can do on a computer such as get on the internet, get email, watch movies, read books, play games and much more. They come in various sizes ranging from 7” to 12”. You use your finger or a special pen to tap the screen to use the apps. What’s an app? App means “application” which is a software program that does a certain task such as accessing email or getting on the internet. Southern Healthy Eating Collard Green & Black-Eyed Pea Soup
Antioxidant-rich collard greens and fiber-packed black-eyed peas have a starring role in this nutritious soup. There’s no need for loads of ham or salt pork—just a small amount of bacon gives it a wonderful smoky flavor. You can skip the bacon and substitute vegetable broth for chicken broth for a great vegetarian dish. 6 servings, about 1 1/3 cups each| Active Time: 45 minutes | Total Time: 45 minutes Ingredients 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 large onion, diced 1 large carrot, sliced 1 stalk celery, sliced 5 cloves garlic, (4 sliced and 1 whole), divided 1 sprig fresh thyme 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper, or to taste 4 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth

1~15-ounce can diced tomatoes 5 cups chopped collard greens, or kale leaves (about 1 bunch), tough stems removed 1~15-ounce can black-eyed peas, rinsed 6~1/2-inch-thick slices baguette, preferably whole-grain, cut on the diagonal 6 tablespoons shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese 2 slices cooked bacon, finely chopped Preparation 1. Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onion, carrot and celery and cook, stirring, until just tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Add sliced garlic, thyme and crushed red pepper and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 15 seconds. Increase heat to high and add broth, tomatoes and their juice. Bring to a boil, scraping up any browned bits. Stir in collard greens (or kale), reduce heat to maintain a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the greens are tender, 5 to 10 minutes. Discard the thyme sprig. Stir in black-eyed peas;remove from the heat and cover. 2. Position rack in upper third of oven; preheat broiler. 3. Place baguette slices on a baking sheet and broil until lightly toasted, 2 to 4 minutes. Rub each bread slice with the remaining garlic clove. (Discard garlic.)
