Have you heard of Required Minimum Distributions or RMD’s? Chances are pretty good, if you are 70.5 or have inherited an IRA from a parent, you are familiar with this term. The penalty for missing an RMD is 50% of the amount that was required to have been taken in any given year. For example, a missed $1,000 distribution could result in a $500 penalty. RMD’s are the government’s way of getting tax on income that has been deferred. If you have contributed to a company sponsored retirement plan (ie, 401k, SIMPLE, 403b) or an IRA you will need to be aware of RMD’s when you reach age 70.5. If you have other sources of income to support you in retirement, it may make sense to take just the minimum required amount from your IRAs so more of your retirement money continues to be invested tax deferred on your behalf. Taking an amount in excess of what is required or needed may waste a valuable tax-deferral opportunity. For those entering the distribution phase of retirement investing, it is important to have a solid distribution strategy in place. If you have more than one traditional IRA, you must determine a separate required distribution for each IRA because different distribution factors may apply in some cases. However, you can total these minimum amounts and take the total from any one or more of the IRAs. There is a specific formula to determine the amount needed to be taken. Help with Caring for Elders The challenges of caring for elders can result in caregivers ignoring their own physical and emotional health. Caregivers often don’t recognize the symptoms of stress that they are experiencing. It may be hard to ask for and/or accept help, but you cannot do it all alone. Think in terms of concrete actions that can help take the weight off of you. 1) Give yourself a break by having an in-home care service come in once a week or bi-weekly to do chores such as laundry, shopping and even cooking. We recommend Comfort Keepers. 2) Give your elder a change of scenery and some organized activities and company by taking them to an a Adult Day Care center. Many of these locations have qualified nurses to assist with medical needs. We recommend Sarah Care in Evans and Aiken Active Seniors. 3) If you need help with transportation there are companies that specialize in transporting seniors to appointments and activities such as Caring Man-in-a-Van. Don’t feel like you have to do it all yourself. This won’t be good for you or your loved one.

Your Home’s Fall Checklist #2 Here are some more tips for keeping your home in tip-top shape for the coming Fall and Winter. • Your roof may look like it needs replacing but it may just be dirty! Your driveway also may be looking grimey after the Summer activities. Pressure washing is a great way to clean both of these areas. Check for a reputable pressure washing company in your area as a bad job can cause damage and leave water stains. • Check foundation for cracks and caulk around the areas where masonry meets siding, where pipes or wires enter the house, and around the windows and door frames to prevent heat from escaping. “Caulking and sealing openings is one of the least expensive maintenance jobs,” says Michael Hydeck, Hydeck Design Build, Inc., Telford, PA, and National President, National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).
“Openings in the structure can cause water to get in and freeze, resulting in cracks and mold build up,” he says. “Regardless of whether you live in a cold or warm climate, winter can bring very harsh conditions resulting in water or ice damage. A careful check of the outside structure combined with inexpensive maintenance can save you money in the long run.” • Weather-strip your garage door. Make sure the seal between your garage door and the ground is tight to prevent drafts and keep out small animals. • Have your heating system checked by a licensed heating contractor. Southern Healthy Eating Cream Cheese Banana-Nut Bread
Enjoy banana bread without all the guilt with this healthy banana bread recipe. Makes 2 loaves Ingredients 2. Beat butter and cream cheese at • 1 1/4 cups chopped pecans, medium speed with an electric mixer divided until creamy. Gradually add sugar, • 1/4 cup butter, softened beating until light and fluffy. Add • 1 (8-oz.) package 1/3-less-fat eggs, 1 at a time, beating just until cream cheese, softened blended after each addition. • 1 cup sugar 3. Combine whole wheat flour and • 2 large eggs next 4 ingredients; gradually add to • 1 1/2 cups whole butter mixture alternately wheat flour with buttermilk, beginning • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose and ending with flour mixflour ture. Beat at low speed just • 1/2 teaspoon baking until blended after each adpowder dition. Stir in bananas, 3/4 • 1/2 teaspoon baking cup toasted pecans, and soda vanilla. Spoon batter into • 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 greased and floured 8- x • 1 cup buttermilk 4-inch loaf pans.
