Tips for Sticking to Your Resolutions So it’s that time again when we are filled with enthusiasm to make great changes in our lives – exercise more, eat healthy, take that trip, declutter the house. Yet within weeks we find ourselves drifting back into our old routines and before we know it we are at New Year’s eve again! Well this year can be different. Here are 6 tips to help you make those goals a reality. 1) Realize that New Year’s day is just another day. While it’s a convenient time because it’s a new year and therefore feels like a new beginning, placing too much emphasis on it being a brand new start of the day your whole life is going to change is unrealistic. Think of the occasion more as a catalyst for change and a jumping-off point. 2) Be realistic. Choose an area that you know needs improvement rather than a radical change. Think long term and make sure it’s something you can realistically see happening. And reduce the amount of resolutions you make to just one or two. 3) Write them down. Writing down the resolutions creates a greater connection between your thinking self and your doing self and makes the resolution appear more real than if you simply think it in your head. 4) Get some support. Tell a friend or your loved ones whom you trust about your resolution. They will provide you with support and keep you focused on your goal. And if you are wavering at all, their support will ensure you don’t give up, just in case you feel like a quitter. (This really works Ed) 5) Review progress and adjust. Break your resolution down into stages so you can track your progress. Look back after a couple of months and see what you’re doing right and what you need to tweak. Maybe adjust the time you plan on doing something towards your goal to better fit your schedule. 6) Celebrate your success. Celebrate your successes, but make sure the way you celebrate doesn’t go against your resolution. If you cut down on drinking alcohol, clearly it’s best not to reward yourself with a glass of wine. Go to www.csraSeniorsScoop.com to download a Resolutions worksheet which will help you define your goals and plan how to stick to them. source: wikiHow.com 3

Exercise is the Key to Healthy Aging As you grow older, an active lifestyle is more important than ever. Regular exercise can help boost energy, maintain your independence, and manage symptoms of illness or pain. Exercise can even reverse some of the symptoms of aging. And not only is exercise good for your body, it’s also good for your mind, mood, and memory. Whether you are generally healthy or are managing an illness, there are plenty of ways to get more active, improve confidence, and boost your fitness. No matter your age or your current physical condition, you can benefit from exercise. Reaping the rewards of exercise doesn’t require strenuous workouts or trips to the gym. It’s about adding more movement and activity to your life, even in small ways. Whether you are generally healthy or are managing an illness—even if you’re housebound—there are many easy ways to get your body moving and improve your health.
5 Myths about Exercise and Aging Myth 1: There’s no point to exercising. I’m going to get old anyway.
Fact: Exercise and strength training helps you look and feel younger and stay active longer. Regular physical activity lowers your risk for a variety of conditions, including Alzheimer’s and dementia, heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure, and obesity.
Myth 2: Older people shouldn’t exercise. They should save their strength and rest.
Fact: Research shows that a sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy for adults over 50. Inactivity often causes older adults to lose the ability to do things on their own and can lead to more hospitalizations, doctor visits, and use of medicines for illnesses.
Myth 3: Exercise puts me at risk of falling down.
Fact: Regular exercise, by building strength and stamina, prevents loss of bone mass and improves balance, actually reducing your risk of falling.
Myth 4: It’s too late. I’m already too old to start exercising.
Fact: You’re never too old to exercise! If you’ve never exercised before, or it’s been a while, start with light walking and other gentle activities.
Myth 5: I’m disabled. I can’t exercise sitting down.
Fact: Chair-bound people face special challenges but can lift light weights, stretch, and do chair aerobics to increase range of motion, improve muscle tone, and promote cardiovascular health.

Savvy Senior Tech Tips Should You Do Online Banking?
With so many news reports of credit card scams and hacks of information from retail stores and websites, it is understandable that many seniors are wary of accessing their bank accounts online. However, there are many benefits to using online banking and if you are an informed user you don’t have to be overly concerned. Online banking is accessing your bank account information from a computer. Mobile banking is accessing it from your phone or tablet. Benefits of Online & Mobile Banking • You can monitor your transactions daily rather than waiting for your statement in the mail or going to the bank and with bank app on your phone you can access the info anywhere. • You can transfer money between accounts easily. • You can pay bills through your bank saving you postage and time writing checks. It also helps balance your account as the only it taken out when the check is sent. Many companies like utilities and cable will receive their payments the next day. • You many save on banking fees by enrolling for paperless banking where you access your statement online.
How to Stay Secure with Online Banking • To get on the internet you use a web browser – do not use Internet Explorer, instead use Firefox or Google Chrome. • Type your bank’s website directly into the top bar of the browser rather than searching so that you go to the correct page. • Look for https:// in the top address bar. This indicates the site is secure. • Always click “sign out” or “log off” of the online banking account before you close the internet (before you click the X to close). • Never use your banking password for any other logins. • Never give your online banking username or password to anyone else especially if you receive an unsolicited phone call asking for your login information or personal info like Social Security number. If in doubt, hang-up and call your bank yourself from the number on your statement. • Never click on email links which take you to a bank site for you to enter your login information. These are known as Phishing emails which try to scare. If in doubt call your bank. Go to www.csraSeniorsScoop.com/blog to view and download a tutorial version of this article.
