Deer Deerwood, Happy New Year!

Kicking off the year with our annual Polar Bear Plunge.

This year, we are upping the game with some music, Hot Chocolate, S’mores, a few pool games… & for the big kids… a Bloody Mary & Mimosa Bar with a few breakfast sandwiches to start the day with a good base. The joint will be jumping, the kids will be swimming, and the hot tub will be warm & welcoming. Count down & first splash at 10:01 am!

This year, the clubhouse, as well as Food & Beverage, will be open for normal operations this first week. Starting January 2, all clubhouse operations will be open during normal business hours. Historically, this time was used for deep cleaning, repairs, maintenance, and projects. JR & the engineering team have done a fantastic job of creating preventive maintenance and cleaning routines that make this annual closure no longer necessary.

As we say goodbye to 2025 and step into a brand-new year, we reflect on the growth, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments we've shared together at Deerwood. The start of a new year is always a time for the renewal of energy, focus, and commitment to making 2026 even better.

At Deerwood, we are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. Together, we will continue to foster a community of trust, support, and integrity, where friendship, fun, and wellness thrive. Whether it's a round of golf, a shared meal, a fitness class, or a social gathering, the experiences we create here are more than just activities; they are memories that last a lifetime and span generations of club membership.

This year, your team is dedicated to enhancing your membership experience, offering even more opportunities for connection, and ensuring that every visit is filled with joy, camaraderie, and fellowship. We are committed to maintaining the excellence that has made Deerwood a cherished place for 65 years, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.

Please be sure to read the newsletter this month, as we have a few important updates that you are sure to find of interest.

Happy New Year, Happy Anniversary, and Cheers to 2026!

See you at the club, Thayer tkern@deerwoodclub.com

P.S. Look for exciting updates to the Member Mobile App coming in January as we move to the Pacesetter platform.

P.P.S. Remember to post and share your membership experiences…life is good at Deerwood!

Friendly Reminder about Deerwood’s Dress Code

As Arnold Palmer so eloquently said… “A Gentleman removes his hat in the clubhouse” while this may not be an exact quote … we do ask for proper clubhouse etiquette. This subject is always a delicate-matter but very important for your experience and that of your fellow members. We will allow “dress” jeans, Bermuda shorts, and sports shoes as appropriate.

Members should never wear tank-tops, cut offs, athletic shorts, short shorts, bare midriffs, bathing suits, golf or baseball caps or t-shirts with large or inappropriate printing, inside the Clubhouse.

Appropriate footwear is always expected in the Clubhouse or on the veranda. During family nights we want our school-age diner to feel comfortable coming, so long as they are considerate of other diners. The dress code will be noted for specific occasions that require formal attire or specific dress.

The holidays are upon us and we ask that you please remind family and friends when visiting the club to share our traditions of comfortable and appropriate attire.

Happy New Year and I hope you all had a great holiday season. We’re excited to start the new year with you and have plenty of fun things planned.

Ladies Teams: We’re halfway through the season and can’t wait to see everyone back on the courts. All our teams are doing well in their leagues, and we’re looking forward to a strong second half. If you want to join a team, whether you’re new or experienced, we have room for all levels and would be glad to help you get started.

Our Pickleball League begins January 10 with a kickoff event. We’ll play our first matches and have food and drinks for players and spectators. After that, we’ll play on eight Saturdays in a league format, finishing with a finals party and matches in early March. We’d love to have you out at the courts.

Looking ahead, here are a few big events to remember.

• March 28: Our first Pickleball Member-Guest event for all levels. We’ll run a tournament throughout the day with food, drinks, and entertainment, and end with a player party featuring XGlosive glow-in-the-dark pickleball. Sign up with your guest soon before spots fill up.

• Our annual Tennis Member Guest event, the Deerwood Derby, will take place from April 30 to May 3, and we would love to have another great turnout with all of you. We’ll have plenty of great food and drinks, and several fun parties throughout the weekend, along with a full schedule of tennis for everyone to enjoy. It’s a great chance to spend time with friends, meet new people, and enjoy the club in a fun setting. All levels are welcome, and we hope you’ll join us.

Junior Program Update: We are very proud of the progress our juniors have made this past year, and we are excited for another year of growth and fun on the courts. Our junior program continues to be one of the largest and strongest in the city, and we’re lucky to have such a great group of players and families. We offer classes and training for all ages and levels, from our youngest players at age 4 all the way through our older junior groups up to 18. If you would like to get your child started or learn more about how the program works, please reach out.

Thank you and see you at the courts.

Pickleball League

Based on registration numbers, we plan to form 4–6 teams with 10 players per team. Our goal is to create evenly matched teams for fair and fun competition. You will only compete against players at/around your level. Advanced players will not be matched with beginners or intermediates. You do not need to play every Saturday: only 6 out of the 10 players on each team will compete each week. If you’re someone who cannot commit to multiple Saturdays but would still like to participate, you are welcome to be added to our sub list. Subs will always be placed on lines that match their skill level. Cost: $60 per person, which includes food for both the Kickoff Event and the Final Party.

Happy New Year!

We look forward to the continued successes we’ve had in my first four years at Deerwood. We continue to develop our tournament programming, teaching opportunities, and merchandise assortment to accommodate the tastes and interests of the membership. Our membership continues to evolve, grow, and mature while new members join the community. These new friendships can be fostered at the Club for years to come.

The course continues to improve year after year through a variety of efforts, but our membership bears the major opportunity. When playing the course, be sure to do your part in the upkeep by raking bunkers, fixing pitch marks, sanding divots, and using the trash receptacle for your cigarette waste and broken tees. Encourage your fellow members and guests to do the same. I know you all love Deerwood and wish for the property to shine. Please take action to protect and care for the facilities.

The first event of the year is the Men’s Season Long Match Play. David Honig is looking to defend his 2025 title. This year’s format continues as from last year with pod play for the first three rounds. This ensures all contestants play several matches rather than the single-elimination format of the past. This net match play is conducted over the first few months of the year. We look to complete the 64-man bracket again this year. Please look for additional information by email.

Please mark your calendars for a few key events in the 2026 season:

Friday & Saturday, February 16 & 18 ~ Presidents Cup, Stableford Championship

Friday & Saturday, March 6 & 7 ~ Quinn Cup, Women’s Member-Member

Friday & Saturday, March 20 & 21 ~ Davis Cup, Men’s Member-Member

Thursday, March 26 ~ Deer Chase Invitational, Women’s Member/Guest

Tuesday, March 31 ~ PGA Player Ability Test

Thursday-Saturday, April 23-25 ~ Deer Hunt, Men’s Member-Guest

Friday & Saturday, May 8 & 9 ~ Men’s & Women’s Club Championships

Monday-Thursday, May 11-14 ~ Aerification

Monday, May 25 ~ Red, White & Brew Memorial Day Tournament

Friday & Saturday, June 5 & 6 ~ The Stag, Men’s Senior Member/Guest

Sunday, June 21 ~ Generations Tournament (Father’s Day Event)

Saturday, July 4 ~ Firecracker Open

Friday & Saturday, July 10 & 11 ~ Deerwood Cup

Monday, September 7 ~ Labor Day Scramble

Sunday, September 13 ~ Rio’s Revenge

Saturday, October 3 ~ Points Challenge Shootout

Saturday, October 17 ~ Grapes & Greens at Approach

Finally, I hope you all are reviewing my e-mails. If you are not receiving golf course updates, the notes could be caught in your spam folders. Search your inbox for “noreply@golfgenius.com”.

Kids Club

Hello Deerwood,

Happy New Year! As we kick off a brand-new year, I just want to take a moment to say how incredibly proud I am of what Kids Club has become. One of our biggest goals is to make sure kids are excited to come back week after week, and thanks to your support as well as the hard work from my amazing team, we were able to offer a full year of unique, creative, and truly memorable party experiences in 2025.

Some of our themes were such a huge hit that they’re officially making a comeback this year! You can look forward to favorites like Deerwood’s Got Talent, the Kids Club Carnival, and the ever-popular Spatacular returning to the calendar in 2026. These events brought so much energy, creativity, and joy, and we can’t wait to build on that momentum this year.

January Party Lineup

We’re starting the year strong with two fun and very different themed parties:

Friday, January 9th – PJ Party

Cozy vibes, comfy clothes, and a relaxed night full of fun. Pajamas encouraged!

Friday, January 23rd – K-Pop Demon Hunter Party

Currently all the craze, so no better theme to kick off our new year. We're going to have a fun filled night with songs and dancing, craft, and games inspired by the movie! You don't want to miss this one because “it's gonna be gonna be golden!”

Keepsake Craft Program

I also want to shine a spotlight on one of our most meaningful programs: Keepsake Crafts. Happening on Saturday, January 17th. This program is all about creating something special that kids (and parents!) can truly treasure. It’s more than just a craft; it’s a memory in the making. Kids get the chance to slow down, focus, and create something with their parent that they’ll be proud to take home and keep for years to come. It’s an awesome concept that deserves more love, and I’d really encourage families to give it a try this month.

Storytime will be held on Wednesday, January 14th, perfect for our younger friends who love to listen, imagine, and engage through stories.

Looking ahead, we’ll also be placing a big focus on teen programming in the upcoming months. I’ll be sharing more details very soon, and I’m excited to begin rolling out experiences designed specifically with our older kids in mind.

Thank you to all our families and members for your continued support and trust. It truly means everything. I will do my very best to make this year even better than the last, and I can’t wait to create more unforgettable moments with your kids in 2026.
