Deer Deerwood
Message from General Manager, Thayer Kern Deer Deerwood, This month is all about 250 Years of America and Deerwood! The year was 1776, and the birth of a nation was at hand. That’s right, in the Pennsylvania State House, later known as Independence Hall, our nation’s forefathers were signing the Declaration of Independence and setting a bold new course for America. Some historians may suggest they were focused on liberty, representation, and independence. We prefer to believe they were also quietly planning for the eventual establishment of Deerwood Country Club, some 184 years later. While this may or may not be entirely accurate, it is difficult to disprove! Fast Forward to 1976 America was celebrating its Bicentennial, marking 200 years of freedom, progress, and plenty of red, white, and blue. At Deerwood, 1976 also carried special meaning as the final year of the Greater Jacksonville Open, a proud chapter in our Club’s PGA Tour history and in Jacksonville’s place on the professional golf stage. And because Deerwood has always appreciated long-range planning, we were [obviously] already looking ahead to America’s 250th and our nation’s semiquincentennial, our championship course renovation, and the completion of a multiyear capital plan. Coincidence? I think not. Besides, how often do you use “Semiquincentennial” correctly in a sentence? Today, as we approach July 4, 2026, America prepares to celebrate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence and 50 years since Deerwood hosted the last GJO…again, coincidence? You be the judge .

Across the country, communities will celebrate not only our nation’s founding, but also the people, places, and local institutions that have helped carry American life forward for two and a half centuries. For Deerwood, 2026 is also a milestone year. The opening of The Approach brings a fresh and exciting short-game experience to Deerwood and Northeast Florida. It creates a very special new place for instruction, fellowship, friendly competition, and family play. At the same time, Deerwood is preparing for one of the most important golf course projects in our history. Our golf course renovation is more than a construction project. It is an act of stewardship. It honors George Cobb’s original design with the creative style and modern touches only Erik Larsen can imagine, Deerwood’s PGA Tour heritage, and the responsibility we have to prepare the Club for the next generation. Great communities do not stand still. They remember where they came from, care for what they have inherited, and build with purpose for those who come next. America’s story is written in historic halls, great documents, and national milestones. Deerwood’s story is written in friendships, family traditions, rounds of golf, tennis matches, pool days, and generations of memories made along the way. As America turns 250, Deerwood begins its next great chapter. Rooted in history, renewed with purpose, and ready for what comes next. Golf News
Message from Director of Golf, Mike Broderick With the heat rising, we want to remind all to stay hydrated! Members can now find two bottled waters in their golf carts to begin every round, bottled water at the driving range to stay safe through the summer heat, whether playing or practicing, and of course, our beverage cart team cycling through the golf course throughout the day. Be sure to utilize these services to stay cool. Once you start feeling the effect, it’s likely time to get your potassium with a banana or grab a hydration drink like Gatorade off the beverage cart. Lightning Detection System With the increase in temperatures comes the higher likelihood of afternoon showers and lightning. Our lightning detection system has been a great addition to provide a forewarning of passing storms and dangerous conditions. The system is set for a 6-mile radius to allow those around the club to seek shelter. One loud blast requires play to cease and everyone to seek shelter. Three blasts will promote “all clear.” This automated system requires a 20-minute countdown once the lightning strikes are outside of our 6-mile radius. The two repeaters on the course should provide proper coverage throughout the property. The three alarms are located at the clubhouse, hole #2, and hole #13 to provide coverage around the course, the clubhouse, practice tee, pool, and tennis. The Approach Grand Opening This month is the grand opening of The Approach, our 3-hole short course. Play on the short course will be held on a schedule of ½ day practice; ½ day play. The Approach will feature two flags on each hole with two tee pads to create the 6-hole rotation. The order of this flag will vary daily to cycle through clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on the day. The Approach will be fun to manage, program, and cycle through and your feedback is greatly appreciated so that we deliver to your expectations. Keep in mind that this amenity is strictly available to Full Golf Members and their Guests. Check in with a Golf Team Member to help coordinate starting times and additional information. We’re excited to see how you utilize the area and upcoming opportunities during the course closure. Our summer-time activities continue with our weekly Thursday Night Mixed Twilight Golf, 5:30PM Shotgun. This program is heavy on the social and light on the competition to encourage everyone to play regardless of their playing ability. We have had a terrific turnout by keeping it simply a 4-person scramble. Everyone with golf privileges is encouraged to participate and we’ll gladly help pair up singles in the mixed format. 2026 Summer Golf Camps | June 30–July 3, July 14–17 and July 28–31 Junior Summer Camps continue with three (3) more sessions. Members are able to sponsor friends and families to take part in these camps for juniors aged 5-15. We are looking to utilize the final camp week (July 28-31) as an elite junior camp for those participating in our PGA Junior League program. This week will have a heavy emphasis on skill development for our better junior golfers, including elements of club fitting, while utilizing technology like TrackMan. Message from Director of Racquet Sports, Till von Winning July is here, and we are officially in the heart of the Florida summer with plenty happening on the racquet courts. We are excited for another month filled with tennis, pickleball, and social events with all of you. Breakfast at Wimbledon – July 11 at 9AM Our Breakfast at Wimbledon social is just around the corner, and we hope to see everyone there! We will host both tennis and pickleball round robins, followed by strawberries and cream, drinks on the tennis deck, and watching the Ladies’ Wimbledon Final together. These events continue to be a great way to meet fellow members, enjoy some friendly competition, and spend time together off the courts. We would love another fantastic turnout! Looking Ahead: Upcoming Events We have several exciting events coming up over the next few months: US Open Mixer – August Join us for a fun evening of tennis and pickleball, where members are encouraged to dress up as their favorite player. We’ll play in a new format with fun prizes followed by food, drinks, and plenty of socializing. Deerwood Pickleball League Returns – Late August Season 2 of our Deerwood Pickleball League kicks off at the end of August and will run for six weeks. We had an outstanding turnout in our first season and hope to see even more players join this time around. Registration information will be released soon. Deerwood Tennis Team Club Championship – Mid September through Late October This fall, we are excited to launch the inaugural Deerwood Tennis Team Club Championship. Players of all levels will be drafted onto teams and compete over several weeks in a fun, team-based format for club bragging rights and the championship title. Whether you are looking for competition, camaraderie, or just a new way to meet fellow Members, this event is designed for everyone. Sign-up information will be coming soon, and we cannot wait to kick off what we hope becomes a new Deerwood tradition. Tennis 101 – New Beginner Series Starting in August Interested in learning tennis or getting back into the game? Our brand-new Tennis 101 series is the perfect opportunity to learn a lifelong sport, meet new people, and become involved in the fun social and team environment at Deerwood. Sessions will take place every Saturday morning in August from 9AM-10AM and are designed specifically for beginner players. Ladies’ Teams Preparing for Fall Season Our ladies’ teams are already preparing for the upcoming season beginning in mid-August, and we are always looking for new players of all levels interested in joining. League tennis is a fantastic opportunity to compete in a welcoming environment while building friendships and enjoying great camaraderie along the way. Message from Director of Fitness & Aquatics, Darren Angle Beat the Heat and Stay Hydrated This Summer! Summer is in full swing, and while the warm weather provides plenty of opportunities to stay active outdoors, it’s important to take extra precautions to protect your health and performance during the hottest months of the year. One of the most important factors for maintaining your fitness and overall wellness is proper hydration. When temperatures rise, your body loses more fluids through perspiration, making it easier to become dehydrated. Even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue, decreased performance, headaches, dizziness, and muscle cramps. Hydration Tips for Summer Activities:
Drink water consistently throughout the day—not just when you’re thirsty. Increase your water intake before, during, and after outdoor activities.
Consider electrolyte replacement during prolonged workouts or activities lasting longer than an hour. Wear light-colored, breathable clothing when exercising outdoors.
Schedule outdoor workouts during the cooler morning or evening hours whenever possible. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and listen to your body.
Whether you’re walking the course, playing tennis, swimming, or participating in outdoor fitness activities, staying hydrated is essential for both safety and performance. Keep Moving This Summer Don’t let the heat derail your fitness goals. Our fitness center offers a cool and comfortable environment to continue your workouts year-round. Take advantage of our group fitness classes, personal training services, and strength and cardio equipment to stay on track. Remember, consistency is the key to long-term success. Even during vacations and busy summer schedules, finding time for physical activity will help maintain your energy, strength, and overall well-being. Aquatics Update The pool season is in full swing, and we’re excited to see so many Members and families enjoying the facilities. Summer Camp Success & July Registration It is safe to say that June has been an incredible month for Deerwood Kids Club Summer Camp. This year, we challenged ourselves to take camp to the next level by introducing exciting new themes, creative activities, and memorable experiences that have filled our days with fun, laughter, and adventure. From creating masterpieces during Artist Academy, to rocking the stage during Battle of the Bands, to exploring the great outdoors as Wilderness Explorers, our campers have embraced every opportunity to learn, create, and make new friends. Watching children gain confidence, discover new interests, and create lasting memories has been one of the most rewarding parts of the summer. One of my favorite moments so far has been seeing campers work together to write songs, build projects, tackle challenges, and cheer each other on throughout every themed week. The energy, creativity, and enthusiasm they bring each day is what makes Deerwood Summer Camp so special. As we head into July, the excitement is only growing. We still have several incredible camp weeks ahead, including Junior Chefs, Harry Potter, Pirate Adventure, and Deerwood Olympics. If you have not registered yet, now is the time! Registration for our remaining camp weeks will be closing soon as we finalize supplies, staffing, and activity preparations for the rest of the summer. If your child has not had the opportunity to join us yet, we would love to welcome them for an unforgettable summer experience. Exciting Changes for Kids Club Beyond Summer Camp, Kids Club continues to thrive thanks to the wonderful families who support our program. One of the highlights of the past two years has been the incredible success of our Kids Night Out events. Since September 2024, we have hosted a different themed party nearly every week, creating exciting new experiences while ensuring that no two events are ever the same. As our program continues to grow, we are making one exciting adjustment beginning this month.

Message from Director of Kids Club, Frank Favale Kids Night Out is Moving to Saturday Nights! This change was made with our Members in mind. Friday evenings are often one of our busiest Kids Club nights, and we frequently have children who prefer to enjoy a traditional Kids Club experience rather than participate in the themed event. By moving Kids Night Out to Saturdays, we can better accommodate both groups while continuing to deliver the high-quality events our families have come to expect. The change also helps us better coordinate staffing and food service operations, ensuring that every event runs as smoothly as possible. Don’t worry—our themed parties aren’t going anywhere! We are simply giving them a new home on the calendar. This month’s featured events include: Saturday, July 11 – Neon Nights Glow sticks, neon games, glow art, music, and plenty of colorful fun. Saturday, July 25 – Out of This World Children will build rockets, create alien-themed crafts, and explore the wonders of outer space through hands-on activities. Rise & Shine Club While many families know us for Summer Camp and Kids Night Out, I also want to invite everyone to take advantage of our monthly Rise & Shine Club programs. These specialty events provide children with additional opportunities to learn, create, and make memories in a fun and welcoming environment while enjoying some of our favorite books, crafts, and seasonal activities. Keepsake Corner – July 15 Our Summer Celebration Keepsake Craft gives children the opportunity to create a meaningful project that families can treasure for years to come. Storytime – July 16 Join us as we read The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle, followed by themed activities and a sweet treat. Club Reminders As we head into a busy and fun-filled summer season, we appreciate your help with a few simple reminders. None of these are new or intended to spoil anyone’s fun—quite the opposite. They help keep Deerwood comfortable, orderly, and enjoyable for everyone. Guest Registration Please remember to register all Guests prior to arrival. This allows us to properly prepare, staff accordingly, and avoid any awkward “And who might this be?” moments. Dress Code and Club Etiquette As Arnold Palmer once said, “A gentleman removes his hat in the clubhouse.” While times may have changed, a few standards are still worth maintaining. We kindly ask for your cooperation in upholding appropriate dress and conduct throughout the club. Proper attire is expected for all Members and Guests, whether on the course, courts, pool, or in the clubhouse. 1960 and Poolside Areas 1960 is designed to be a more casual, family-friendly dining space given its proximity to the pool, verandah, and snack bar patio. Swimwear is permitted on the pool deck and snack bar patio only. When entering indoor spaces, we ask that proper cover-ups be worn. Sam’s Place A friendly reminder that Sam’s Place is reserved for Members and Guests age 21 and older. It is intended to be an adult space where the conversation is mature and the atmosphere is relaxed. Children at the Snack Bar Window Summer at Deerwood should absolutely include happy kids and plenty of snack requests. That said, we ask that parents or responsible adults accompany children at all times when visiting the pool or clubhouse, especially when ordering food and beverages at 1960 and the Snack Bar. Having a parent or responsible adult present helps ensure that orders are placed correctly, Member charges are processed correctly, and dietary needs are clearly communicated. Children in the Hot Tub The hot tub is reserved for Members and Guests age 17 and older. This is for both safety and to maintain a more relaxed environment in one small corner of the property. Swim Diapers For our youngest swimmers, please remember to bring swim diapers when needed. They are also available for purchase at the Fitness Desk. This small step helps keep the pool clean and open for everyone and avoids the kind of pool closure story no one wants to be part of. The Deerwood Member Mobile App Our new Mobile App includes a helpful fantastic behind-the-scenes tool called the “Member Name Game,” which is a wonderful instrument to help our Team get to know the Members. To make the most of this feature, please upload a current photo of yourself, and have location services and push notifications enabled! This helps ensure a more personalized experience, from greetings to fantastic service and accurate billing. Thank you, as always, for your support of these simple but important standards. The Team truly enjoys seeing and serving you at the club and your support helps us avoid putting our Team in the uncomfortable position of having to deliver these reminders in the moment.
