With spring underway, I’m reminded that stewarding a great public park is both a privilege and a serious responsibility. It means caring for the daily details that make Hermann Park beautiful and welcoming, and it also means leaning into complex issues when the Park and our community’s needs intersect.
One of those issues has been our work with Harris Health and other public partners as they plan for the future of healthcare in our region. The Commissioners Court has now voted to move forward the effort to use eminent domain to use Park land on the edge of the Texas Medical Center for an expansion of Ben Taub Hospital. While this was not easy, we worked diligently to ensure that the Park was strengthened as a part of this process. We are supportive of the critical role Harris Health plays in serving our community, and throughout we have focused on balancing that need with our responsibility to Hermann Park. As part of that effort, we pushed for solutions that would deliver meaningful benefit to Park users alongside this decision. Most notably, we believe we are close to advancing a long-term parking and access solution, something the Park has needed for years. This approach allows us to address a real and longstanding challenge for Park visitors, and to take an important step towards ‘greening’ the heart of the Park. We look forward to sharing more as this effort advances and will stay closely engaged to ensure
the Park continues to be protected and strengthened for all Houstonians.
Even while we do that work, we do not pause the progress of the Park.
We are continuing to advance the Park’s master plan, and I’m especially excited to share that the North Lake Sanctuary is beginning to take shape. This new respite in the heart of the Park will feature natural trails, native plantings, a restored urban tree canopy, and sweeping vistas over McGovern Lake, along with opportunities for birdwatching and quiet reflection. I believe it will become one of those deeply meaningful places that quietly transforms how people experience Hermann Park.
We are also looking forward to the redesign of the Miller Outdoor Theatre arrival plaza, which is nearing completion and will significantly improve the arrival and gathering experience for audiences.

Letter from the President & CEO
Continued from page 2
At the same time, revitalizing the Japanese Garden remains a major focus, and we are working steadily toward a project that honors the Garden’s significance while strengthening it for the future.
Listening to the public is a core part of how we do this work. Earlier this year, we hosted a town hall to discuss the healthcare expansion and its relationship to Hermann Park, ensuring that all perspectives were heard and that there was a robust opportunity for dialogue and questions. We are also nearing the completion of our community survey for the Japanese Garden, and we are grateful to everyone who has taken the time to share thoughtful input. Together, these efforts help us plan with care and ensure the Park continues to reflect the needs and experiences of those who use it.
I’m also pleased to share a different kind of inspiration we’ve been drawing on as we plan for Hermann Park’s future. In the fall, a group of supporters joined us in New York City to visit parks designed by our master plan design team at Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. It was a remarkable opportunity to see the breadth of their work and to experience firsthand how great public spaces can be shaped over time through design, stewardship, and community partnership. We came home energized, with fresh perspective that will continue to inform our work here in Houston.
Closer to home, we are always grateful for the people and partners who make Hermann Park feel so vibrant. In this issue, you’ll see the energy of Run in the Park, the warmth of our holiday programming, and the generosity of Park supporters. We are also especially excited to share a new way for more people to enjoy the Park: ExxonMobil’s Free Carousel Tuesdays. Creating accessible, welcoming experiences is central to our mission, and we are grateful to ExxonMobil for helping create a tradition that will bring joy to countless Park visitors.
Thank you for loving Hermann Park, using it, supporting it, and believing in what it can be. This Park is one of Houston’s great shared places, a refuge, a gathering ground, and a source of civic pride. With your partnership, we will continue to protect it, strengthen it, and keep moving it forward.
With gratitude,
Cara Lambright President & CEO Hermann Park Conservancy
Hats in the Park 2026
The feeling of spring was abundant at Hermann Park Conservancy’s Hats in the Park on Thursday, March 26. In its 18th year, the luncheon continues to be a fabulous and fashionable fundraiser that makes an incredible impact on Hermann Park. Event co-chairs Demetra Jones, Tina Arias Peterman, and Nicola Fuentes Toubia coordinated a wonderful day for the approximately 450 attendees who were able to enjoy the blooming sights in the McGovern Centennial Gardens. Through the incredible generosity of the event patrons, the Conservancy raised just over $375,000 for the maintenance and betterment of Hermann Park.
This year’s luncheon recognized UTHealth Houston for its longstanding support of Hermann Park. Through its partnership with the Conservancy, UTHealth Houston has helped advance community programs and experiences that promote wellness, connection, and access to shared public space.
To everyone that supported the luncheon, thank you for making a difference in Hermann Park.

Run in the Park
On Saturday, November 8, Hermann Park Conservancy hosted the 22nd annual Run in the Park powered by Reliant. With 741 runners from the Greater Houston area ranging from ages one to 81 participating in Hermann Park’s longest-standing community event, the Conservancy raised approximately $59,000 for the essential care needed to maintain the Park and its trail system.
A warm, sunny morning kicked off the races in Hermann Park. The mix of competitive runners, dedicated joggers, and merry walkers followed the routes that took them through several Park destinations, including the Commons, the heart of the Park, and the live oak-shaded trail. Next up was the 1K Kids’ Run, sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas 4-H, and Harris County Master Gardeners, where little runners ages 12 and under dashed to the finish line with the encouragement of their family and friends on the sidelines. After their races, participants enjoyed a post-race party with a wide variety of refueling refreshments, music, and activities.
“As we celebrate the 22nd Run in the Park, we’re reminded how strong our community’s connection to Hermann Park truly is,” said Cara Lambright, president and CEO of Hermann Park Conservancy.
“This event unites runners, walkers, families, and friends in support of a beloved green space that brings joy, health, and connection to everyone who visits.”

From Japan to Hermann Park: Collaboration in the Japanese Garden
In late February, Hermann Park Conservancy welcomed a team from Japan to the Japanese Garden for a week of hands-on work, collaboration, and planning. Led by Hiroyuki Tsujii, and joined by Shin Inoue and Sho Miyaji of Tsujii Landscaping Co., the visit combined detailed maintenance, staff training, and early planning for a major restoration of the Garden.
This visit is part of a broader effort to preserve the Japanese Garden’s legacy and prepare it for future generations. Tsujii, a protégé of original designer Ken Nakajima, brings deep expertise in Japanese landscape design and has been entrusted with restoring other Nakajima-designed gardens around the world, including in Rome and Australia.
The restoration is being carried out in close partnership with Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA), the landscape architecture firm leading Hermann Park’s master plan.

Ryoma Tominaga, Associate Principal at MVVA, is playing a key role in guiding the design and coordination of this work.
Together, the team is carefully studying the Garden’s original design while addressing aging infrastructure, improving accessibility, and strengthening long-term stewardship. The project will restore key elements of Nakajima’s vision, renew existing landscapes, and introduce thoughtfully integrated new spaces that deepen the visitor experience while remaining true to the Garden’s traditions.
The visit also drew strong community interest, with opportunities for the team to connect with Conservancy supporters and stakeholders, including a special evening in the Garden to share their philosophy and vision.
Hermann Park Conservancy is deeply grateful to Tsujii Landscaping Co. for their partnership as this important work moves forward.

Conservancy Travel Program: Finding Inspiration for Hermann Park’s Next Chapter
In November 2025, the first trip in Hermann Park Conservancy’s new travel program brought a group of 14 supporters to New York City for an immersive look at the work of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA), the planners guiding the next chapter of Hermann Park’s evolution. The visit offered a rare opportunity to experience firsthand the creativity and care that define MVVA’s work and the impact their designs have had on New York’s urban landscape—and what it could mean for the future of Hermann Park.
Across the city, MVVA has reimagined the relationship between people, parks, and nature. The itinerary began at Brooklyn Botanic Garden, where MVVA Partner Paul Seck, who led the garden’s restoration, guided the group through this cherished landmark known for its thoughtful blend of horticulture and urban design.
Guests also explored Brooklyn Bridge Park, MVVA’s signature waterfront transformation stretching 1.3 miles along the East River. There, MVVA Partner Matt Urbanski shared how the
Additional stops showcased the diversity of MVVA’s design approach, including the intimate naturalism of Teardrop Park, the vibrant waterfront setting of Chelsea Cove, and the green oasis of Bella Abzug Park.
The trip concluded with a behind-the-scenes visit to MVVA’s Brooklyn studio, offering a glimpse into the creative environment where many award-winning landscapes first take shape. As Hermann Park continues its evolution, this experience highlighted the shared principles guiding the Conservancy’s partnership with MVVA—embracing play, nature, access, and community to create exceptional public spaces for Houston. Plans for future trips are in the works, so stay tuned! If you would like to learn more about the travel program and opportunities to join us, reach out to Meghan Miller at mmiller@hermannpark.org

Pitch in at Hermann Park
Give the Park you love a little extra care and help it get ready for the world! Join us for “Pitch in at Hermann Park,” a hands-on volunteer series where community members of all ages come together to care for Houston’s most cherished green spaces.
We are proud to work alongside FWC26 Houston and Harris County – Houston Sports Authority in the Impact Houston 26 efforts to elevate the local environmental action on a global stage and build a lasting, positive legacy for our city.
Over the next few months, volunteers will work alongside Conservancy staff on everyday but meaningful projects like mulching, planting, and litter cleanup — the kind of small efforts that make a big impact for visitors, wildlife, and the health of the Park. No experience is needed, just a willingness to lend a hand!
Whether you come with friends, family, coworkers, or on your own, your time truly matters here. Help us welcome the world to Hermann Park! Learn more about the volunteer series, pick a date (or more than one), and sign up at hermannpark.org/events
Job Shadow Program
Passionate about the environment? Want to get active experience and make an impact? Hermann Park Conservancy’s Job Shadow Program, supported by Phillips 66, offers a unique opportunity for students ages 15–17 to gain firsthand experience in conservation, environmental stewardship, and park management.
From Thursday, July 9, through Friday, July 31, participants will complete a minimum of 20 volunteer hours, working alongside professionals and developing skills that support both their future careers and their community.
Learn more and apply at hermannpark.org/volunteer or email volunteer@hermannpark.org with any questions.
“One thing like about this program is that it is a hands-on experience instead of simply learning about it. We can experience and learn about conservation and wildlife at the same time. would definitely do the program again.” — Leo, 2025 Participant
A Love for Hermann Park that Lasts Generations
Spring is a season of renewal—a time when many of us reflect on the people and places that matter most in our lives.
For Arielle and Jonathan Rogg, one of those places is Hermann Park:
“Since moving here in 2016, Hermann Park has always been our extended backyard,” said Arielle Rogg.
“Our kids have grown up in the Park and continue to spend many of their weekday afternoons and weekends playing on the playscapes, riding the train, and debating which animal is the best on the carousel.
Hermann Park feels like an extension of our family.” That deep connection is why the Roggs chose to include Hermann Park Conservancy in their estate plans, becoming members of the George Hermann Society. If you have been thinking about creating or updating your will, our partner FreeWill offers a simple way to do it online in about 20 minutes, completely free. It is an easy step to help protect what matters most to you, and, if you choose, a meaningful way to help keep Hermann Park’s green spaces thriving for years to come.

Hermann Park means something different to everyone.
For some, it’s a place to ride the Hermann Park Railroad with family. For others, it’s a peaceful walk beneath the trees, a morning in the Gardens, or simply a green space to recharge in the heart of the city.
A membership with Hermann Park Conservancy is a meaningful way to stay connected to the Park you love while helping care for it all year long. Member support helps sustain the daily maintenance, landscaping, programs, and improvements that keep Hermann Park beautiful, welcoming, and accessible to millions of visitors each year.
Members also enjoy special ways to experience the Park, from railroad and carousel perks to invitations to exclusive events, tours, and programs that bring you closer to the Park and the people who care for it.
When you become a member, you are doing more than supporting a park—you are helping preserve one of Houston’s most treasured public spaces for generations to come.
