hardwoods: information and care the nature of wood and its environment
hardwoods
All hardwood contains variation in its color and grain. In manufacturing and finishing its tables, The Country Woodshop strives to bring out the natural beauty and character of each piece of wood. These wood characteristics give each piece of solid wood furniture its unique charm, and, although the finishing processes are identical, no two pieces will be exactly the same.
Mature hardwoods supply the nation, and much of the world, with timber used for everything from railroad ties to quality furnishings. U.S. hardwoods are coveted the world over for their warmth and lasting beauty in furniture, cabinetry, millwork and flooring. In finished products, hardwoods are the purest expression of nature. They are not synthetic nor are they engineered. Their beauty is not just skin deep. And, thanks to responsible stewardship of America’s hardwood forestlands, their supply is abundant and perpetually renewing.
Because most hardwoods are open grained, solid wood furniture will expand and contract with changes in humidity and temperature, even after protective finishes have been applied. Care in controlling the furniture’s environment will help minimize the minor cracking and warping that is a natural part of the wood’s character. Indoor humidity should be kept in the 35 to 40 percent range to minimize these effects. If the humidity moves out of the ideal range, solid wood tabletops can expand or contract causing a gap in the center or at the ends where the two halves meet. This is perfectly normal as moisture is absorbed through end grains of wood causing more movement on the ends of the table than in the center. Through change of seasons these changes will occur according to humidity levels. Additionally, direct sunlight and fluorescent fixtures that contain ultra-violet rays can cause chemical changes in the wood and finish and should be avoided. Furniture should also be kept away from direct sources of heating and cooling and out of attic or basement storing environments. With proper care, solid wood furniture will provide a lifetime of enjoyment and can be passed on to future generations.

Hardwoods are such broad-leafed trees as Oak and walnut, Cherry and Maple, Hickory and Poplar, and dozens of other species. Each autumn their green leaves burst into brilliant symphonies of amber, orange, magenta, and thousands of hues in between. Hardwoods grow prolifically, reaching maturity at about 80 years. When harvested, they often begin a second life as home furnishings that we can cherish for generations. Just as each tree is different from the next, so, too, are hardwood products individually unique. Hardwoods are characterized by an infinite variety of grains and distinctive textures. Trees grow limbs that fall off as the tree matures. What remains is a knot on the hardwood surface. These natural markings add character to the wood's appearance and have absolutely no effect on the wood’s durability and stability.
hardwoods: information and care care of solid hardwood tables With proper care, your solid hardwood table can provide years of pleasure for your family. Here are some tips to be sure you get the most from your table: •
Maintain a humidity-controlled environment. Your home should be kept in the 35-45% humidity range to prevent warping and cracking.
•
Keep table out of continued direct sunlight and away from heat sources such as furnace ducts, radiators and fireplaces.
•
Use coasters and trivets with non-scratching bottoms underneath glasses and serving dishes placed on the table.
•
Store table leaves in or close to the table to maintain consistent environmental conditions.
•
Avoid placing sharp objects that could scratch the surface directly on the table.
•
Avoid the use of nail polish remover, alcohol or other solvents near the table.
•
Dust table often and carefully with a soft cloth following the grain pattern to remove abrasive dust particles.
•
Periodically clean table with a mild, non-alkaline soap and water using a soft sponge or cloth. Dry immediately with soft cloth and buff lightly following wood grain.
•
Avoid polish that contains any silicones. Ask your retailer to recommend a polish or wax.
warranty Country Woodshop is confident of its quality wood products. That’s why we offer a warranty covering defects in workmanship, material, and construction of our furniture for a period of two years. If a defect is found by the customer during that period, we will either repair or replace the defective item, or substitute a different item. The final decision is at the discretion of Country Woodshop.
If the humidity moves out of the ideal range, solid wood tables could expand or contract, causing splits in the grain pattern and joints of the wood panels. These symptoms are the result of an uncontrolled environment and are not considered defective. If the environment is not controlled these conditions should be appreciated as an inherent characteristic of solid wood. Due to wood’s “open grain”, they tend to expand and/or contract in relationship to their environment. Indoor humidity levels in the range of 35-45% will minimize gapping, such as, at the center or ends of table leaves. Seasonal gapping or minor cracks in the grain pattern of solid wood are considered a normal occurrence and should not be assumed to be a defect of materials or workmanship. If, under normal conditions, the furniture EXAMPLE OF develops a defect, such as deep SEASONAL GAPPING cracks in a table, a dealer will visit the customer’s home to assess the humidity level. The dealer is responsible for taking a portable hygrometer along to the customer’s house and record the humidity. Recorded humidity readings will be sent to Country Woodshop when the item is returned for repairs. If the humidity is not in the range of 35-45%, the warranty is void and repair charges will be assessed. If the defect is due to material or workmanship, the item will be repaired. If repairing is not practical, the item will be replaced.
limitations: The warranty will be honored if the consumer has the original sales receipt. The warranty is not transferable to another owner. The warranty is only valid on furniture purchased from an authorized Country Woodshop dealer. Tables not finished on underside of table as well as top are not under warranty. Warranty does not include freight costs to and from factory or inspection fees – these costs are the responsibility of the customer. No credit for repairs will exceed total value of the repaired item. Negligence, misuse, or accidents by the customer will void the warranty. (See section on how to care for solid wood furniture for details on proper handling to prevent voiding the warranty.)

construction quality In every table built by The Country Woodshop there is a quality of workmanship that assures many years of retained beauty and endurance. This workmanship can be found in the attention to the smallest details found throughout the line.
Table tops are made of one inch solid wood and fitted with solid steam-bent skirts.
As each table is unique, it is branded and numbered with its own serial number for future reference.
Specially designed sanding equipment ensures that each table is sanded smoothly and uniformly.
Leaves are cut to fit each table precisely and receive the table’s serial number along with its numeric order for installation.
Solid hardwood, fully extendable drawers allow easy access and more usable storage space.
Leg connections are reinforced by a v-grooved corner block assembly with a two bolt attachment.
Mortise and Tenon construction adds strength to each table’s design while preserving the fine detail of its design.
High quality gear slides provide ease in opening and closing the table tops while providing the convenience of self leaf storage on many table designs. Wood slides are designed for easy operation and are built for superior table top support.

internet policy Dear Valued Customer: It has come to our attention that The Country Woodshop tables are being offered for sale on the internet at prices that we consider too low. This has caused a great deal of dissatisfaction among our customers, because of the inability to have a level playing field. A key component of the success of The Country Woodshop LLC has been a quality presentation of our products and a corresponding sales approach that provides the consumer with all of the information necessary to make a truly informed purchase decision. We have always believed that an essential ingredient of our success is the personal interaction between well-trained sales personnel and the retail consumer. An integral part of ensuring consumer satisfaction is prompt and responsible warranty service. If our tables are sold through the internet to locations remote from that of the actual dealer, the quality of such follow up service usually is inadequate and our image with the consumer could be damaged. It is the dealer’s responsibility to take care of such warranty issues. In light of all the factors stated above, it is our preference that our product is sold in a retail store. However, because of having responsible dealers who sell on the internet at fair prices, we feel we cannot ban internet sales. Therefore, we will require our dealers who advertise our tables on the internet to have no less than a 100% markup (example: $500 x 100% = $1000) on their finished table cost.
