We are delighted to present you with the latest catalogue of beef bulls that are now available through the Gene Ireland program. The breeding program is a joint initiative between Pedigree Breeders, Commercial farmers, Breed Societies, AI Companies, DAFM & ICBF. The aim of the program is to progeny test high index beef bulls which will produce profitable cows for the suckler beef industry. The minimum criteria for a bull to be included on the panel is 5 Stars across breed on Replacement Index.
We have also included a section dedicated to high Terminal Index bulls which are selected to produce profitable animals for sale or slaughter. The minimum criteria for a bull to be included in the Terminal section is also 5 Stars across breed on Terminal Index.
If you contact ICBF (023-8820452) and order semen from any of the bulls in this catalogue you will receive the following benefits:
Access to the highest index new beef bulls in Irish AI at €8 per straw (technician charges may apply).
Straws delivered to your own tank or the technician of your choosing.
Progress towards meeting SCEP scheme targets.
Potentially sell some of the progeny back to ICBF for performance testing at the Tully Beef Test Centre.
Freedom to choose whatever combination of bulls & breeds that you require from the catalogue.
Bulls with the ‘IP Protected Symbol’ are IP protected by NCBC. This is relevant for progeny of NCBC IP protected Sires that are of interest to other AI Centres. Breeders of such animals are advised to consult the NCBC IP Terms of use. Such IP protection is in line with International Cattle Breeding IP management best practise.
The diagram below gives an overview of both the design and operation of the Gene Ireland Beef programme.

The class of Autumn 2025, who sired them?
The second half of 2025 saw 190,045 suckler beef calves (beef sire x beef dam) born on Irish farms, of which 32,826 have been registered to an AI sire. This represents approximately 17% of all suckler beef calves born in the period. Interestingly – 54% of these AI sired calves are already genotyped. Below is a list of the Top 10 AI sires of autumn 2025 born suckler progeny based on sires recorded.
The Top 10 AI Sires with the most progeny recorded to them between 1/7/2025 to 31/12/2025.

Evaluation based on the November 2025 evaluation.
These 10 sires account for 29% of all the AI suckler progeny born in the second half of 2025. The list is dominated by well proven Charolais and Limousin sires along with one Angus and one Blue. The highest Replacement Index bull above is AA4089 – his index of €245 places him in the top 1% across breed. The highest Terminal Index bull on the list is LM9577 - again his index of €211 sees him also within the top 1% across breed. Elite sires like these have the potential to drive profit in suckler beef productions systems. Encouragingly, 7 of the 10 sires listed above have graduated from Gene Ireland over the years which highlights the value of the programme for consistently progeny testing young high impact AI sires. This helps to drive the rate of genetic gain by building high reliability indexes at a young age on the back of robust data recording. Every Spring and Autumn a new panel of young high genetic merit AI sires are made available to suckler farmers for just €8 per straw.

Michael Coughlan is farming a suckler – beef enterprise in partnership with his father in Union Hall, Co. Cork. They also run a contracting business. He is calving approximately 60 sucklers split 50/50 between AugustSeptember and December – February. All the bull progeny are finished under 16 months of age. On average this year, the young bulls graded U= 2+ with a carcass weight of 400kg at 15.5 months. The heifers are either finished in a 20 – 22 month system or retained as replacements within the herd. On average this year, the finished heifers graded U- 3= with a carcass weight of 353kg just under 21 months of age. The herd is an active participant in SCEP, NGP and Gene Ireland. The herd is also involved in the ABP Advantage Programme, with all cattle being killed in ABP Bandon.
The suckler herd is made up of mostly Charolais cross cows with some Limousin and Saler cross cows present also. The average Replacement Index of the cows in the herd is €110 which compares to the national average of €100. Michael’s cows are definitely a more terminal type of cow with an average carcass weight figure of 24kg (national average is 11kg) and this is clear to see when you look at how their progeny are performing in the factory. Cows are bred 50/50 between 5 star Terminal Index Charolais stock bulls and AI.
Charolais would be the main breed of sire used on the farm. Apart from the two resident stock bulls, high Terminal Index bulls such

as CH7503 (Cloonradoon Ricky), CH4159 (Knockmoyle Loki) and CH6490 (Orbi) have been used. Michael would like to increase the milk within his cows. Currently, they have an average milk figure of 0.5kg (national average is 4.22kg). To do this, the farm is now using a small amount of Limousin and Saler AI during the breeding season in the hope he will breed replacement females. Michael has been involved with Beef Gene Ireland since 2016. A lot of the AI bulls he is still using today are graduates of previous Gene Ireland Spring and Autumn panels, highlighting the need for the programme.
Michael’s CHX cow, tag 458 (IE141912780458) ticks an awful lot of boxes and is an ideal suckler cow. She is sired by Gene Ireland graduate sire Cloverfield Excellent (CXY). She was born in January 2014 and first calved at 35 months. She has a Replacement Index of €152 with a carcass weight figure of 30.7kg and a Milk figure of 8.1kg. She has had an average calving interval of 367 days and has calved again on the 17th January 2026 with a CH4159 heifer which he plans to retain as a breeding heifer. To date, her progeny have performed extremely well. On average, they have had an ADG at weaning of 1.33kg. As you can see from the screenshot taken from Michael’s suckler cow report, any cattle finished have performed extremely well and three daughters have been retained as cows, and they are being equally successful.
