Hepatitis B & Diabetes Hepatitis B is inflammation of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus. Diabetes is a chronic disease where there's too much glucose in your blood. Type 1 diabetes happens when your body can’t produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body can’t make enough insulin, or use it properly. Insulin is produced by the pancreas.

The relationship between chronic hepatitis B and diabetes is not clearly established but some studies have found a higher rate of diabetes in people with hepatitis B than the general population.
Studies have also shown that pregnant women with hepatitis B have a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes.
