duration: 17 Weeks [Spring 2025]

Located directly adjacent to the IIT campus in Bronzeville, this project explores a communal learning based curriculum functioning through centrally oriented architecture.

The main revelation from site analysis was broader the need for community both within the students but also the neighborhood as a whole My architectural response to this condition was the creation of a central core within the building, where communal gatherings and interaction would occur. This also allows for multifunctional usages, such as art galleries, lectures, or communal markets during the summer.

The school distributes classrooms based on grade, increasing vertically through the building. This system keeps the youngest children closest to the administrative offices and security, while also requires that they have less need to climb up stairs, both elements which increase their safety. The primary social spaces, lunchroom and library, are on the second and third floor respectively, which allows for easy access from all levels. Finally, there are three playgrounds distributed between the floors which allows for the spaces to be used simultaneously by multiple grades at the same time. These playgrounds are key in promoting play within the school, an essential element to the creation of community.

duration: 6 Weeks [Fall 2025]

Esgrafiat 38 is an affordable housing project in the Eixample neighborhood of Barcelona that emphasizes the role of community within residential spaces

The design process started by establishing the necessary site response conditions. The first was to establish a building height that sits in-between the two adjacent buildings. The second was to divide into a grid, both for structural purposes, and an homage to the Barcelona gridded block system. Third the creation of a courtyard to provide sunlight to interior spaces of the building, Fourth was the adjustment of the building corners so that they align with the adjacent building edges. Finally, the creation of an underpass connecting the parks on each side of the site

The residential complex establishes the importance of social spaces while still maintaining resident privacy by providing its primary social space on the ground floor of the building. On the apartment levels access is controlled through a singlular central corridor. This corridor promotes social interaction outside of the apartments, while also allowing for optional interaction within, via windows next to the kitchen and dining room. The internal distribution of the units is based on a privacy heirarchy, with most units divided into rows where spaces aligned with the entrance are social spaces, while the adjacent spaces are more private.

The facade of the building utilizes a sliding mesh system that allows residents for the best control over the sunlight that their unit will receive. This is crucially important for this site due to the signficant amount of sunlight that is received in Barcelona throughout the year. This system also creates a dynamic facade that will vary depending on the day and conditions.

active archives

instructors: Randall Deutsch

software: Revit, Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom

role: Individual

duration: 5 Weeks [Fall 2024]

An intervention on the current architecture annex at the University of Illinois, Active Archives provides an interactive storage and display space for past student works.

The intervention addresses three needs of the Illinois School of Architecture simultaneously, providing permanent storage and display space intermixed with seating and lounge areas. These additions will reactivate the building, transforming stagnating and underutilized space into a new hub for academic success. Natural light for the social spaces enters through the a large atrium that links all the levels, while the display spaces are auxiliary for more-controlled lighting. The social spaces are linked through differing materials and colors, providing a unique identity to the building.

The integration of this project relies on the multipurpose archive pieces. These pieces embedd organic seating arrangements and glass display cases into typical archive storage units. These additions reinvent how functionality and leisure can coexist.
