A LET TER TO OUR COMMUNIT Y As I reflect on this extraordinary year at the Henry, I keep coming back to one feeling: joy—the joy of art, connection, and seeing our galleries filled with engagement and wonder. Since we began offering free admission, attendance has soared, and the museum has been more alive than ever. We presented powerful exhibitions that reflect the vibrancy and diversity of our community: Josh Faught’s multi-media installation exploring craft traditions and queer culture; Tala Madani’s evocative paintings and animations contemplating gender roles and family dynamics, A.K. Burn’s multi-year project examining ideas of negative space and (in)visibility; and Lucy Kim’s melanin works at the edge of art and biology—to name a few. FY25 was also the launch of our new Mural Project in the Sculpture Court, featuring Charlene Liu’s colorful work drawing on communal experiences and heritage. Together, these exhibitions exemplify the museum’s commitment to amplifying diverse voices, championing artists who take risks and push boundaries, and providing a platform for inspiration and new possibilities. This is what the Henry does best—connecting artists and communities. As you read this Impact Report, I invite you to reflect on your own moments of joy at the Henry and what they meant to you. Maybe it was an artwork that surprised or moved you or an idea that sparked new thought. Whatever it may have been, I hope it was a moment of discovery and personal meaning. I am deeply grateful to our Board of Trustees, members, patrons, artists, University of Washington colleagues, and friends whose support makes the Henry a place where curiosity and creativity thrive. Your commitment fuels our collective work, each and every day. Here is to the possibilities ahead, and to the enduring ways contemporary art can engage, inspire, and connect us all.
With gratitude,
Kris Lewis John S. Behnke Director

STR ATEGIC PL AN F Y26–30: BUILDING THE NE X T CENTURY As the Henry Art Gallery approaches its centennial in 2027, we are using this milestone as both a celebration and a catalyst for the future. Our FY26–30 Strategic Plan charts a clear path for the next five years, grounded in the belief that contemporary art has the power to challenge norms, inspire change, and create a more equitable world. Developed through collaborative planning across departments, leadership, and board engagement, the strategy focuses on strengthening the museum from the inside out, ensuring the Henry remains a vibrant hub for artists, students, scholars, and the broader community. Accessibility, innovation, and sustainability are woven throughout every priority.
STR ATEGIC PL AN IMPER ATIVES 1. Fiscal Sustainability 2. Audience Engagement 3. Arts and Artists 4. People and Culture 5. Infrastructure
FIVE YE AR VISION The Henry’s five-year strategy is for the museum to evolve as a vibrant nexus where UW students, faculty, and the Greater Seattle community engage deeply with contemporary art and ideas. Marking our 2027 Centennial as both a milestone and catalyst, we will elevate the Henry for its next century by continuing to showcase diverse artists, activate signature programs, expand teaching and learning opportunities for UW students, and broaden engagement with the collection. To advance these initiatives, we will significantly grow revenue. We will enhance workplace culture that connects employees with a shared vision for the Henry. Accessibility and innovative technologies will be woven into everything we do. By 2030, the Henry will be a must-visit destination, recognized as a local and global leader for its contributions to contemporary art and scholarship.
