“I am able to manage now, as I have an understanding of my present limitations to carry out daily living skills and I continue to strive to overcome any obstacles”. Bruce Falkenberg, veteran Bruce Falkenberg joined the Royal Regiment of Wales in 2000 at the age of 22, serving for 16 years. He was deployed to Kosovo, Iraq and Canada. Zimbabwe-born Bruce grew up in a family well used to service: “Almost every male member of my family served in the forces ranging from the First and Second World Wars, the Navy, Air Force and police”. Bruce had a varied role in the Infantry on the front line. But years of being in service began to take effect on him, where issues with his feet began to worsen: “It felt like walking on hot sand, only a hundred times worse. It came as a shock to learn that my tendons were tearing my feet and causing nerve damage up my calves”. In 2013 and 2015 Bruce under-went surgery - amputations to his lower legs, finally leaving him pain free after years of suffering and depression. “Learning to walk again was the best part. I was able to wean myself off all medication, lose weight and begin to work on my fitness thereby preparing me for life after the military.” Sport was instrumental in Bruce’s recovery. Joint grant funding with Blesma bought him a bespoke sports wheelchair and Bruce was able to join the Ospreys Wheelchair Rugby team. “Playing rugby has been an important part of my life in giving me direction and motivational drive to succeed.” 2

“Your support has helped people like me think and act beyond their perceived limitations, re-engage with the community and lead a wholesome life”. Dave Rose, veteran Former Royal Air Force veteran, Dave Rose from Essex, spent 31 years as an Aircraft Engineer before leaving the service in 2018 due to physical injuries sustained on duty. Dave’s injuries included substantial paralysis of his right arm and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, both of which are treated with strong medication and an implanted Spinal Cord Stimulator. “Injury slowly took away my ability to do the adventurous and sporting activities I loved. This, along with seeing my career slip through my fingers, hit me hard and I was not in a good place”. Dave first encountered Help for Heroes whilst at Headley Court, where Help for Heroes Band of Brothers fellowship offered support. After he left Headley Court, Dave took part in Help for Heroes recovery activities closer to home and sports played a major part in Dave’s recovery journey. “I attended several activities, including a three day Outwards Bounds Residential, Beneficiary & Partner activity weekend and indoor skiing with Disability Skiing UK”. Dave befriended other wounded veterans, attended training weekends, competing in triathlons and other extreme challenges. “The events and opportunities were the vehicle that introduced me to other injured personnel, from whom I grew friendships, gained knowledge, and received support. The activities allowed me to discover what I could do with adaption, be part of a team again and regain belief in myself”.
