Welcome to Root Shoot

We believe farmers are stewards of the land — taking responsibility for the soil, nourishing our communities, and proving that there is a better way to do agriculture. We value fresh water, local food, craft beverages (a lot), mountain views, thriving wildlife, and a healthy economy. It’s an honor and privilege to do what we do and every day we celebrate those who support us from the craft brewers and spirits purveyors to the land stewards, and fermented beverage consumers far and wide.

MALTING PROCESS

From Our Grain To Your Glass

As 5th-generation Loveland, Colorado farmers, respect for the heritage and land, and a deep- rooted understanding of the region’s agriculture are in our blood. Pride and family values are an essential part of the process at Root Shoot Malting. We take what we learned from the farmers, and family, before us, while using today’s most innovative agricultural equipment, to make the least impact on the Earth and keep the land healthy for the next generation of Root Shoot Farmers.

Located on the Olander Farms’ 112-acre farm, and approximately 1500 leased acres, Root Shoot is working to ensure that farmland remains available to grow grain for the beers and spirits of tomorrow.

Root Shoot Malting is in the unique position to control the entire malting process from seed variety and growth, to harvest and final kilning.

Founded by Todd and Steve Olander in 2016, Root Shoot Malting is deeply grounded and invested in Northern Colorado.

We carefully cultivated the operation to specialize in providing the highest quality of local grain and malt to the craft brewing and distilling industries.

Root Shoot Malting was the first craft malthouse in the United States to operate the Kaspar Schulz malting system.

Manufactured in Bamberg, Germany, our equipment is composed of a steeping vessel and germination-kiln combo drums that are capable of producing 30 tons of craft malt per week.

With this advanced technology, we are able to deliver incomparable malt flavor and the promise of high-quality consistency. We offer fresh, unique, made-to-order malts that are truly local.

CONSERVATION

The livelihood of our small business depends on land, a commodity that for us and so many others is scarce and exponentially depleting.

In December of 2022, Olander Farms and Root Shoot Malting together finalized a Conservation Easement with Colorado Open Lands, an agreement that permanently limits the use of our land, 112 acres, and will ensure the continued pace, quality, and permanence of protected agriculture in our region.

We’re here to tell our story to raise awareness far beyond our own farmland, and we’re campaigning to keep farmers on farms – a future that supports the rural agricultural communities, families, and wildlife.

Olander Farms is implementing practices associated with the regenerative agriculture movement.

We’re taking creative approaches to increase and maintain soil health, retain and reuse water, bio-sequester carbon, and promote biodiversity in our region.

We need your support to help us preserve and regenerate Colorado agriculture, allowing us to continue growing and producing local grains on our farmland.

TESTIMONIALS

“Switching to Root Shoot Malt—and continuing to use it—has been the easiest decision we’ve made at Los Dos Potrillos Cervecería. We were initially drawn to the idea of brewing with locally grown malt, but after our first trial batch, we were blown away by the differences. We immediately converted both Breweries. Not only has Root Shoot Malt elevated the quality of our finished beer, but it has also steadily improved our brewhouse efficiency. We’re thrilled with their partnership. We can’t recommend Root Shoot highly enough.”

“Root Shoot is all about quality and consistency. Their team is incredibly responsive, knowledgeable, and truly committed to supporting our success. It’s a company culture felt by everyone we interact with, as they care about solutions just as much as the exceptional quality malt they produce. Root Shoot has elevated our efficiency, and most importantly, the quality of our beer. They are a critical and trusted partner for LUKI!”

“Root Shoot has been a great partner for our little brewhouse. Not only are they great people, but we are able to make better beer using their high quality craft malts at a reasonable price. The Genie Pale Malt is my favorite 2 Row on the market and it’s hard to go wrong with any of their grains. With a 3 BBL Brewhouse we were worried that we would be paying a premium for high quality malt that we wouldn’t be able to sustain, but we’ve picked up efficiency and quality of our beers that has given us great return on our investment.”
