It was the same make and model of car—a Mercedes 380SEC. But it was a bumper sticker that read, “I love Gstaad.” She had visited the Swiss Mountain town in the eighties. In what she now admits was “probably a pretty silly move,” she bought the sticker and stuck it to the back of her Mercedes. The seller was right—it was her car. She got their number and bought the car. The “I love Gstaad” car is now with girls in North Carolina. They’ll share it at school, drive it to buy themselves coffee with friends, or do whatever college kids do on their breaks. It's a concept that brings Shields peace: "I have this image of two young girls walking to my old high school car and starting their lives. It's heartbreaking, but it's also a full and sweet circle.
