It wasn’t long before lingerie and underwear manufacturers began adding comfortable elastics to match the vibrant energy of the times. It wasn’t until 1932 that most lingerie designers realized that proper fit could go a long way—that’s when cup, wire, and hook-and-eye sizes were introduced—and A, B, C, and D sizes became the industry standard. Adjustable maternity bras were also introduced in the 1930s.

The introduction of nylon in 1940 revolutionized the garment industry, and women flocked to lingerie made with the new synthetic material, which allowed for a wide range of colors and patterns. During World War II, women went to work in factories—and the "torpedo" bra with its pointed cups appeared. These bras were quickly replaced by the "bullet bra" of the 1950s, which had conical cups and was worn by Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, and Lana Turner.
