IMPACT INSIGHTS

ISSUE #3 Feb 2026

IMPACT Extrication Training Reaches the Arctic IMPACT’s evidence-based extrication training continues to extend its global reach, with recent teaching delivered to responders on the North Slope of Alaska. Delivered by Dr Michael Levy, the session sparked real moments of reflection, including the striking question, “How have we been doing it wrong for this long?”. It’s a reminder that the most meaningful transformation in extrication isn’t technical but cultural, driven by patientcentred priorities, strong multi-agency teamwork, evidence-led practice, and the willingness to challenge long-held beliefs.

New Publication: Trapped and Traumatised We’re pleased to share a new openaccess scoping review exploring the psychological sequelae of entrapment following motor vehicle collision (MVC), published in the Scandinavian Journal of Trauma, Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine. Although MVC-entrapment is known to increase physical injury severity and mortality rates, this review highlights an evidence gap in the psychological sequelae of MVC-entrapment. The authors identify key themes, including perceived threat to life, loss of control, and the importance of supportive human contact - alongside reports of clinically significant mental health outcomes. They further advocate for trauma-informed rescue practices, including facilitated self-extrication, deployment of extrication buddies, and psychological interventions during the emergency response and beyond.
