ARTIST STATEMENT

The geog R a P hical diffe R ence S between British Columbia’s younger oceanic coast and the ancient lacustrine terrain of Ontario are undeniably obvious and easy to see. The two distinct regions also require different effort, and skill sets, for me to compose and then paint their landscapes. I use the same tools to capture inspiration from the land—camera, iPhone, plein air sketchbooks, iPad—however, the execution of these images from studies to canvas, depending on the area, is entirely different.

The West Coast is my home. The images I paint of British Columbia consist of cooler hues, shades and tones than the warmer gamut of colour of the Ontario fall vistas I am partial towards. Further, the angles and shapes of B c I find enthralling. They are sharper, linear, more severe, and magnified by low clouds, gnarly evergreens, glacial fjords, steep valleys and crags. At this time in my artistic career, I am hooked on the challenge of recreating the vertical environment—a different applied math—of B c ’s mountainous landscapes.

None of this hunting and gathering for vistas of places less traveled could be done without behind-the-scenes support and advanced organization; the modes of transportation alone (from tin boats to larger vessels, ferries, planes, trains and automobiles) are prerequisites to exploring this vast country for its visual gifts. And it is the passion of art collectors, and their love of this land, that continually assists me in my journey and sustains the arts.
