Regardlessofthecareusedinthedesignandconstructionofanytypeofequipment,therearemany conditionsthatcannotbecompletelysafeguarded againstwithoutinterferinginthereasonableaccessibilityandefficientoperation.
Acarefuloperatoristhebestinsuranceagainstan accident.Thecompleteobservanceofonesimple rulewouldpreventmanyseriousaccidents.
Theruleissimple:neverattempttoclean,lubricateor maintainamachinewhileitisinmotion.

Observethesafetyinstructions

-Safetyinstructionstickers/plates mustbeaffixed,maintainedand replacedwhennecessary.

Cleantheworkingareabefore startingwork

Usinggrabhandlesandsteps
Fallsareoneofthemaincausesof injury.
-Alwaysfacethemachinewhen enteringorleavingit,anduse onlytheaidsprovided,e.g.steps andhandrails.
-Neveruseoperatingelementsas grabhandles.
-Neverjumpdownfromthemachine.

Adjustingtheoperatorsseat
Aseatthatispoorlyadjustedwith respecttotheoperatorortheworkingconditionsmayresultinprematureoperatorfatigueandthusin faultyoperation.
-Theseatmustbeadjustedwith anychangeofmachineoperator.
-Theoperatormustbeabletodepressthepedalscompletelyand movethecontrolleverseffortlesslywithhisbackresting againstthebackrest.
Ifthatisnotpossible,movethe seatforwardorbackandcheckthe settingagain.

Applyingthesafetybelt
Ifthemachineoverturns,theoperatormaybeinjuredand/orthrown outofthecab.Hemaybeseverely injuredorevencrushedtodeathby theoverturningmachine.
-Beforeoperatingthemachine, checkthebeltfabric,theclosure andthefasteningcomponents carefully.Ifoneofthepartsis damagedorworn,replacethe safetybeltorthecomponentsbeforestartingupthemachine.
-Alwaysremainseatedandkeep thesafetybeltfastenedwhileoperatingthemachine.Thiswillhelp minimizetheriskofinjuryinthe eventofanaccident.
Thesafetybeltmustbereplaced afteranyseriousaccidentevenifit appearstobeundamaged.
Workingfromtheoperatorsseatonly
Startinguptheengineincorrectly maycausethemachinetomake unexpectedmovementsthatmight leadtosevere,evenfatal,injury.
-Alwaysstartuptheenginefrom theoperatorsseatonly.
-Neverstarttheenginebyshortcircuitingthestarter.
-Afterstartinguptheengine,check thatalldrivinglevers,driving pedalsandcontrolleversarein neutralposition.
Nevertakepassengersonthemachine
Passengersonthemachinemay sufferinjurye.g.fromforeignbodiesorthroughbeingthrownoff.
-Onlytheoperatorisallowedonto themachine.Nevertakepassengers.
-Passengersalsoobstructtheoperatorsviewsothatthemachine isnolongersafelyoperated.

Beforesettingoff
Removeanysoil,mud,snow,ice, greaseandoilfromyourworking footwearbeforeoperatingthemachine.Youmightotherwiseslip fromstepsandpedalsandthus initiateinadvertentmovements.
Adjustthedriversseatandthemirrorbeforesettingoff.
Closethefrontwindowandthecab door.
Ifthemachineisequippedwitha restrainingbeltfortheoperator, fastenthebelt.
Beforesettingoff,soundthehornto warnanypersonsintheimmediate vicinity.
Neverallowotherpersonstotravel withyouonthemachine.
Notethepositionoftheworkingequipment
Neverdrivewiththeworking equipmentextended,asthatmay impairthestabilityofthemachine. Bringtheworkingequipmentas closeaspossibletothemachine.
Takingcareduringoperation
Ifthefrontequipmentoranother partofthemachinecollideswitha higherobstacle,e.g.abridge,both themachineandtheotherobject aredamaged,andpersonsmaybe injured.
Takecaretopreventtheboomor stickfromcollidingwithhigher obstacles.
Takingcarewhentrenching
Theinadvertentseveringofundergroundcablesorgaspipesmay causeanexplosionand/orfire. Thismayresultinsevere,potentiallyfatalinjury.
-Beforedoinganytrenchingwork, checkthecourseofcables,gas pipesandwaterpipes.
-Observethestatutoryminimum distancefromcables,gaspipes andwaterpipes.Neverlookinto theendofaninadvertentlyseveredfibre-opticscable,asthat mayseverelyinjuretheeyes.
Contactthelocalauthoritiesand/ orsupplyenterprises(electricity, gas,water,sewage,telecommunicationsetc.)toobtaininformation onundergroundsupplylines.
Distancefromoverheadpowerlines
Severe,potentiallyfatalinjurymay resultfromthemachineorthefront equipmentnotbeingkeptwellclear ofoverheadpowerlines.
-Ifworkisbeingdoneclosetoan overheadpowerline,nopartof themachineortheloadmust comewithinadistanceof3m plustwicethelengthoftheoverheadpowerlineinsulatorfromthe powerline.
-Checkoutandobservetherelevantlocalregulations.
-Wetgroundincreasestherangein whichapersonmaygetanelectricshock.
-Keepallpersonsorcolleagues clearofthelocation.
Aftercontactinglivewires
-Donotleavethemachine.
-Drivethemachineoutofthehazardzone.Warnothersagainstapproachingandtouchingthemachine.
-Havethelivewirede-energized. Donotleavethemachineuntilthe contacted/damagedlinehasbeen de-energizedwithabsolutecertainty.
AccidentPreventionwhenreversingandslewing
Anypersonintheimmediatevicinity ofthemachinemaybehitorrun overwhenthemachineisbeing reversedorthesuperstructureis beingslewed.Thismayresultin severe,potentiallyfatalinjury.
Topreventaccidentsduringreversingandslewing:
-Enlisttheassistanceofamarshallerifyourviewisrestricted.
-Alwayslookinalldirectionsbefore reversingorslewing.Makesure thereisnooneintheimmediate vicinity.
-Keeptheacousticreversingalarm (ifpresent)inagoodoperating state.
-Alwaysbepreparedforthepossibilityofpersonsenteringthehazardzone.Usethehornoranother signaltowarnanypersonsinthe immediatevicinity.
-Enlistamarshallerforreversingif yourviewisrestricted.Alwaysensurethatthemarshalleriswithin sight.
-Themachinemustnotbemoved untilagreementhasbeenreached withthemarshalleroncorrectinterpretationofthesignals.
-Familiarizeyourselfwiththemeaningofallmarkings,signsanddesignationsusedintheoperation andcometoanagreementonthem withthemarshaller.
-Keepwindows,mirrorsandheadlampscleanandingoodorder.
-Dust,heavyrain,fog,etc.may reducevisibility.Ifthisisthecase, reduceyourspeedandswitchon appropriatelighting.
ReadtheOwnersManualcarefully.
Rulesfordrivingontheroad
Themachinemustnotbedrivenon thepublichighwayunlesstheconditionsoftheGeneralOperating Permitareobservedor,inthe eventofdeviationsfromtheGeneralOperatingPermit,avehiclespecificoperatingpermithas beengranted.Thesepermitsmust bepresentinthecabduringsuch travel.
-Alwayshaveawarningtriangle, warninglampandfirst-aidkiton board.
-Bringtheworkingequipmentintoa positioninwhichthemaximum machinedimensionsarenotexceeded.
-Switchthebucket/grabswitchover valveto"Grab"position.The bucketcylinderisthenhydraulicallyblocked.
-Mountclearancelamponstickand connecttoasocket.
-Raiselevellingbladecompletely andattachareflector.
-Raiseclaws(option)completely andblockmechanically.
-Switchofffloodlamps.
-Locksuperstructure..
Recoveringandtowingthemachine
Towthemachinewithatow-rodor towingropeonly.
Thetow-rodorropemustbefree fromdamage.Theymustbedimensionedinsuchawaythatthecalculatedbreakingloadisequaltothree timesthetractivepowerofthetowingmachine.
Thetowingvehiclemusthaveadequatetractivepower.
Driveslowly,carefullyand smoothly.
Allpersonsmustkeepclearofthe tow-rodorrope.
-Towonlyifthebrakesandthe steeringofthemachinearefunctioningproperlyandifthemachine cannotbeotherwisetransported.
-Towdefectivemachinesonlyasfar asnecessarytorecoverthemachinefromhazardousareas.
-Aftertherecovery,themachine mustbesecuredagainstinadvertentmovementsandunauthorized starting.
-Havethemachinerepairedbefore transportingitovergreaterdistances,orloaditontoatransport vehicle.
-Themachineisnotsuitablefor towingtrailersorothervehicles overlongerdistances;thiswould resultindamagetoaxlesand gearboxes.Thetowcouplingis designedsolelyfortowingorrecoveringvehiclesfromhazardous areasorforlashingpurposeson transportvehicles.
Travellinguphillanddownhill
Beforestartingupthemachine,read throughtheOwnersManualcarefully.
-Beforedrivingthemachine,putit intoneutralposition(seeOwners Manual).
-Neverdrivedownslopeswitha gradientofmorethan30°.Takean alternativeroutewithlowergradients.
-Keepthebucket20-30cmabove thegroundontheuphillsidewhile travellinguphillordownhill.
-Ifthemachinestartstosliporto loseitsstability,lowerthebucket immediately.
-Drivingacrossslopesmaycause themachinetosliporoverturn.
-Steeringmanoeuvresonslopes maycausethemachinetooverturn.
-Nevercoastdownhill.Thismay resultinalossofcontroloverthe vehicleandinseveredamageto propertyaswellasfatalinjury.
-Alwayschangetofirstgearbefore thedownhill/uphillslope.Thisincreasesthebrakeactionofthe travelmotor,preventinginadmissiblyhightravelspeeds.
-Whenworkingonaslope,thefuel tankmustbetoppedupassoonas thefuelindicatorlightsup.
PreventingthemachinefromoverturningInspectingthedeploymentlocation
Workingonslopesalwaysentailsa riskofthemachineoverturning. Thismayresultinsevere,potentiallyfatalinjury.
Topreventoverturning:
-Exercisespecialcarewhenworkingonaslope.
-Preparetheworkingareaofthe machinebylevellingit.
-Keepthebucketclosetothe groundandtothemachine.
-Reducetheworkingspeedofthe machinetopreventoverturningor slipping.
Avoidchangingdirectionwhendrivingonaslope.
-Alwaystrytoavoidcrossinga slopewithagradientofmorethan 5degrees.
-Whenslewingaload,reducethe slewingspeedtomeetsafetyrequirements.
Specialcaremustbetakenwhen workingonfrozenground.
-Ariseintemperaturesoftensthe soil,impairingthestabilityofthe machineduringtravel.
Workingattheedgeofexcavations oronthevergeofaroadentailsa riskofthemachineoverturning. Thismayresultinsevere,potentiallyfatalinjury.
-Beforestartingwork,inspectthe siteandthegroundconditionsto preventanyriskofthemachine overturningandoftheground,a stockpileorawallgivingway.
-Ifnecessary,theground,excavationsiteedgesandvergesmustbe reinforced.Keepsufficientclearancewiththemachinefromthe edgesoftheexcavationsiteand theverges.
-Whenworkingonaslopeoronthe vergeofaroad,enlisttheservices ofamarshallerifnecessary.
-Ifthegroundhasapoorloadbearingpotential,reinforceitbeforestartingwork.
-Specialattentionisneededwhen workingonfrozenground.Ifthe ambienttemperaturerises,the groundbecomessoftandslippery.
Parkingthemachinesafely
Topreventaccidents:
-Parkonaflat,horizontalsurface.
-Turnthebrakeswitchtobraking position.
-Settheworkingequipmentdown ontheground.
-Lowerthelevellingbladeand/or theoutriggerclawsontothe ground.
-Engagethesuperstructurelock.
-Runtheengineunloadedatminimumspeedforca.5minutes.
-TurntheignitionkeytoOFFpositiontoswitchofftheengine.Then withdrawthekey.
-Movethesteeringsafetyleverto blockthemachine.
-Lockthewindows,theslidingroof andthecabdoor.
-Lockallcoversandflaps.
Preventingaccidentswhenthemachineis moving
Severeorfatalaccidentsmayresult fromanattempttoenterorleavea movingmachine.
-Beforeleavingtheoperatorsseat, selectaflat,horizontalareafor parkingifpossible.
-Parkthemachinesafely.
-Blockbothwheelsandsetthe workingequipmentdownonthe ground.
-Parkatareasonabledistance fromothervehicles.
Confirmingthedirectionofmachinetravel
Inadvertentactivationoftheoperatingpedalmayresultinsevere damageorfatalaccidents.
Checkthemachineposition.Read thecorrespondingsectioninthe OwnersManual.
Avoidcavingouthighbanks Protectionfromrockfallandlandslides
Theedgesmaycaveinorthere maybealandslide.Thiscanresult insevere,potentiallyfatalinjury.
Beforeworkingatlocationswitha riskofrockfall,makesureyour machinehasacabwithaFalling ObjectProtectiveStructure(FOPS).
Cavingprevention
Toreverseawayfromtheedgeof anexcavationintheeventofthe groundgivingway,thetracksmust alwaysbepositionedwiththerear travelmotorsatrightanglestothe edgeoftheexcavation.
Donotpanicifthegroundstartsto givewayandadequatewithdrawal isimpossible.Insuchcasesthe machinecanoftenbesecuredby loweringthefrontequipment.
Nevermovethebucketabovepersons
Thebucketmustneverbelifted, movedorslewedabovepersonsor atruckcab.
Materialfallingfromthebucketora collisionwiththebucketmayresult ininjuryandindamagetothemachine.
Safetyinstructions,maintenance/servicing
Safetyduringtransport
Thereisariskofthemachineoverturningwhenitisbeingloadedonto atruckortrailerandwhenitisbeingunloaded.
-Ensurethatlocalregulationsare observedwhenthemachineisbeingtransportedonthepublic highway.
-Anappropriatetruckortrailermust beprovidedforthetransportofthe machine.
Whenloading/unloadingthemachine,thefollowingprecautions mustbetaken:
-Findfirm,horizontalground.
-Alwaysusealoadingplatformor drive-onramp.
-Amarshallermustbeenlistedto helpwithloading/unloadingthe machine.
-Whenloadingorunloadingthe machine,theautomaticspeedresetmustalwaysbeswitchedoffto preventanunexpectedincreasein speedduetoinadvertentactivation ofanoperatinglever.
Alwayssetthetransmissionstage switchto"slow".
Inthe"fast"transmissionstage,the travellingspeedmaybeautomaticallyincreased.
