HydraulicOilTemperature
Itisextremelyimportantthatthehydraulicoiltemperaturebecheckedperiodicallyduringoperation. Continuousoperationofthemachinewithhighhydraulicoiltemperatureswillcauserapidwearand failureofhydrauliccomponents.
Ifthehydraulictemperaturerisesabove180degreesFahrenheit(83degreesCelsius)andremains thereorcontinuestorise,stopthemachineandthoroughlycleantheexteriorsurfacesofthehydraulic oilcoolers.Useanairhosetoremoveanyloosematerialandthen,ifnecessary,useasteamcleanerto removeanyremainingmaterial.Alsochecktheconditionoftheenginecoolantand,ifthecoolant showssignsofsystemcorrosion,flushandcleanthecoolingsystem.Ifthehydraulicoiltemperature stillremainsabovethemaximumtemperature,stopthemachineandtroubleshootthesystem.
GroundDriveSystem
Ifduringoperationthegrounddrivesystemseemstoberespondingsluggishlyand/orthereisa rattlingorpingingnoiseinthegrounddrivepump,stopthemachineandchangethegrounddrive suctionfilterelement.Iftheproblempersists,refertotheSundstrandManual.

3.Releasetheparkingbrake,selecttheappropriatedrivetransmissiongear,andmovethetravel controltoselectthedesiredtraveldirectionandspeed.
4.Tostopmachinemovement,movethetravelcontroltoneutral,reducetheenginespeedtolowidle, andstoptheengine.
5.Settheparkingbrake.

AdjustingTheRotorDepthControlLimitSwitches
Theautomaticdepthcontrollimitswitchesareadjustablelaterallytosetthetoleranceswithinwhich thedepthcontroloperates.Thedistancebetweentheswitchesdeterminestheamountofvariationin depthcontrol.Thevariationindepthincreasestheclosertogethertheswitchesarepositioned.To adjustthelimitswitchestotheminimumtolerance:
1.Loosenthefourcapscrewswhichsecurethelimitswitchestotheirmounts.Slidetheswitches horizontallyuntileachswitchrollerisrestingintheradiusateachendofthecamnotch.Tightenthe capscrews.
2.Raiseeachlimitswitchroller1/16inch(1.6mm)andlistenfora"click"frominsideeachswitch.If the"click"isheardbeforeorafterthispoint,loosentherollerarmshaftnutandadjusttherollerarm untilthe"click"isheardwhentherollerisraised1/16inch(1.6mm).
ChangingTheRearWheelTracking
Therearwheelsaremountedonapivotingaxleassemblyandcantrackeitherinsideoroutsidethe frame.Tochangetherearwheeltracking:
1.Parkthemachineonahard,levelsurfaceandsettheautomatic/manualcutterdepthselectorat "Manual".Depresstheredrotordepthcuttingcontroluntilthehoodandrotorraisetherearwheelsoff theground.Stoptheengine.
2.Loosentheaxlepivotboltandremovetheaxlestationaryboltfromeachrearwheel.
3.Swingtherearwheelstothedesiredtrackingposition.
4.Installtheaxlestationaryboltandtightenit,thentightentheaxlepivotbolt.
5.Starttheengineandlowertherearwheelsbyraisingthehoodandrotorwiththegreenrotordepth cuttingcontrol.

Theloadcontrolsystemactstopreventtheenginefrombeingoverloadedwhilethemachineis working.Thethreecontrolsthatadjusttheloadcontolsystemshouldbesetasfollows:
1.Auto-manualswitch-"Auto".
2.Speedrangeswitch-"Med".
3.Sensitivityswitch-atmid-point.
Inaddition,thefollowingcontrolsshouldbepositionedasindicated:
4.EngineThrottle-maximumspeed.
5.Grounddrivetransmission-"Low".
6.Rotortransmission-"High"or"Low".
7.Powertake-offclutch-engaged.
AdjustingTheCuttingDepth
1.Withthemachinepositionedatthestartofthecut,closethehooddoor.
2.Settheautomatic/manualcutterdepthselectorat"Manual"
3.Selectthepropercombinationofrotortransmissiongearandaxlespeedforthedesiredrotorspeed. Normallythebestcombinationforlongcuttertoothlifeandhighproductivityisobtainedwiththe transmissioninlowandtheaxleinhigh(thesecondcombinationshowninthetablebelow).
NOTE:FourDifferentRotorSpeedsAreAvailableByPositioningTheTransmissionAndAxleShift ControlsAsShownBelow:
4.Settheengineatlowidle,engagethepowertake-offclutch,thensettheengineatfullspeed.
NOTICE
IFTHEROTORPOWERTAKE-OFFISENGAGEDWITHTHE THROTTLESETHIGHERTHANIDLE,THEROTORDRIVE MECHANISMMAYBEDAMAGED.
5.Settheautomaticcutterdepthselectorat"Automatic".Thehoodandrotorwillloweruntilthehood restsonthegroundandtherotorisatthedepthpreviouslyset.
6.Movethetravelcontroltocutforwardafewmachinelengths,thenstopthemachine.
7.Settheengineatlowidle,disengagethepowertake-off,thenSTOPTHEENGINE.
CONTACTWITHTHEROTATINGROTORCOULDCAUSE PERSONALINJURY.ALWAYSDISENGAGETHEPOWERTAKEOFFCLUTCHANDWAITUNTILTHEROTORHASSTOPPED ROTATINGBEFOREWORKINGONORNEARTHEROTOR.
8.Notethepositionofthedepthgaugepointeronthedepthscaleandmeasurethedepthtowhichthe rotorhasdug.
NOTE:EACHMARKONTHEDEPTHGAUGEREPRESENTSAPPROXIMATELYONEINCH (2.54CM).
9.Ifthecutisnottothedepthdesired,loosenthelocknutandturnthedepthadjustingroduntilthe depthgaugepointerhasbeenmovedenoughtoaddorsubtractthenecessaryamountfromtheinitial setting,thentightenthelocknut.Movingtheadjustingrodindecreasesthedepthofcut;andmoving theadjustingrodoutincreasesthedepthofcut.
Asanexample,ifthedepthofcutmeasuredinstep8was5inches(12.7cm)andthedesireddepthof cutwas8inches(20.3cm),thedepthgaugepointerwouldneedtobemovedtopointtoamark3 inches(7.6cm)deeper.
NOTICE
DONOTSETTHEDEPTHCONTROLTOADEPTHBEYOND THEEXTENDEDLENGTHOFTHELIFTCYLINDERSOR OVERHEATINGOFTHEHYDRAULICOILANDUNNECESSARY WEARONTHEHOODWEARPLATESMAYRESULT.
10.Repeatsteps2through9untiltheproperdepthofcutisachieved.
StartingTheCut
1.Positionthemachineatthestartofthecut.
2.Adjusttheopeningoftherotorhooddoortoobtainproperlevelingoftheprocessedmaterial.
3.Settheautomatic/manualcutterdepthselectorat"Manual"
4.Selectthepropercombinationofrotortransmissiongearandaxlespeedforthedesiredrotorspeed.
5.Settheengineatlowidle,engagethepowertake-offclutch,thensettheengineatfullspeed.
NOTICE
IFTHEROTORPOWERTAKE-OFFISENGAGEDWITHTHE ENGINEOPERATINGFASTERTHANLOWIDLE,THEROTOR DRIVEMECHANISMMAYBEDAMAGED.

NormalStarting
Tostartthemachinenormally:
1.Checkthattheparkingbrakeisset,thepowertake-offclutchisdisengaged,therotortransmission, thetravelcontrol,andthegrounddrivetransmissioncontrolsareattheneutralposition.
NOTE:THEENGINECANNOTBESTARTEDUNLESS(1)THETRAVELCONTROLISAT NEUTRALAND(2)THEPOWERTAKE-OFFCLUTCHISDISENGAGED.
2.Turntheautomatic/manualselectorto"Manual".
3.Settheenginethrottleatlowidle.
4.Movethekeyswitchto"On"andpressthestarterbuttontostarttheengine.Releasethestarter buttonassoonastheenginestarts.
Iftheenginefailstostartafter30secondsofcranking,releasethestarterswitch.Wait2minutesto allowthestartermotortocoolbeforeusingitagain.
5.Oncetheenginestarts,watchtheoilpressuregaugeforanindicationofoilpressure.Ifthegauge doesnotindicatewithin15seconds,shuttheenginedownimmediately.
6.Allowtheenginetoidlefor3to5minutesoruntilthewatertemperaturegaugebeginstorise.
7.Operatetheengineatlowloaduntilallsystemshavereachednormaloperatingtemperature.
ColdWeatherStarting
STARTINGFLUIDISVOLATILEANDMUSTBESTOREDAWAY FROMHEATANDDIRECTSUNLIGHT.IFANAEROSOL CONTAINERISUSED,FOLLOWTHEINSTRUCTIONSONTHE CONTAINER.
NOTICE
SPRAYSTARTINGFLUIDONLYWHILECRANKINGTHE ENGINE.IFSTARTINGFLUIDISSPRAYEDINTOANENGINE THATISRUNNING,THEFLUIDWILLCAUSESEVEREPREIGNITIONINALLCYLINDERSUNTILTHEFLUIDIS CONSUMED.
Whenstartingfluidisrequiredtostarttheengine,twopersonsmustbeavailable;onepersonto performthestartingprocedureandonepersontospraythestartingfluidintotheengineaircleaner inlet.FollowthenormalstartingprocedureandWHILECRANKINGTHEENGINEspraystarting fluidintotheaircleanerinletfor1second.Waitatleast2secondsbeforesprayingstartingfluid again.Iftheenginedoesnotstartwithin30seconds,letthestartercoolfor2minutes,thenrepeatthe procedure.
JumpStartingTheEngine
HYDROGENGASFROMTHEBATTERIESISFLAMMABLEAND COULDIGNITEOREXPLODE,CAUSINGSERIOUSBURNSOR INJURIESFROMFLYINGPARTICLES.NEVERSMOKEOR HAVEANOPENFLAMEWHENNEARTHEBATTERIES.
CONNECTINGBOOSTERBATTERIES
The24-voltelectricalsystemhastwo12-voltbatteriesconnectedinseriesasshownintheillustration. Tojumpstarttheengine,connectanothersetoftwo12-voltbatteriesconnectedinseriestothe machinebatteriesasshownabove.
1.Connectonejumpercabletothepositive(+)terminalsoftheboosterbatteriesandthemachine batteries.
2.Connectthesecondjumpercabletothenegative(-)terminaloftheboosterbatteriesandthentothe engineorframeofthemachinebeingstarted.
3.Starttheengine.
4.Disconnectthejumpercablefromtheframeorenginethendisconnectthecablefromthemachine positive(+)terminal.
5.Disconnectthecablesfromtheboosterbatteryterminals.

Themachinecanbetransportedasa10-foot(3.05-meter)loadbychangingtherearwheeltrackingto theinsideoftheframe.
1.Swiveltherearwheelstotheinsideoftheframe(see"ChangingtheRearWheelTracking"onpage 2-7).
2.Starttheengineandsettheautomatic/manualcuttingdepthcontroltothemanualposition.
3.Depressthegreenrotorcuttingdepthcontroluntilthehoodandrotorareattheupperlimitof travel.
4.Carefullydrivethemachineontothetrailer.
5.Depresstheredrotorcuttingdepthcontroluntilthehoodandrotorarerestingonthetrailer,then STOPTHEENGINE.
6.Settheparkingbrake.
7.Securelyblockthemachinewheelsandtiethemachinedown.
UnloadingTheMachineFromATrailer
1.Removetheblocksandtie-downs.
2.Checkthemachinevisuallyforanyshippingdamage.
3.Completethedailyor10hourservice(seepage3-9).
4.Starttheengine.
5.Settheautomatic/manualcuttingdepthcontroltothemanualposition,thendepressthegreenrotor cuttingdepthcontroluntilthehoodandrotorareattheupperlimitoftravel.
6.Carefullydrivethemachineoffthetrailer.
