NOTE:A50percentLongLifeCoolant/Antifreezeand50percentdeionizedwatersolutionprovides freezeprotectionto-37°C(-34°F)andanti-boilprotectionto108°C(226°F).DONOTuseLongLife Coolant/Antifreezeatreducedconcentrations(lessthan50percent),astheadditiveswouldbereduced alongwiththeantifreeze.LongLifeCoolant/Antifreezeconcentrateisavailabletolowerthecoolant freezepointwhenusedinarcticconditions.LongLifeCoolant/Antifreezeconcentrationcanbe increasedto60percentfor-52°C(-62°F)freezeprotection.

LongLifeCoolant/AntifreezeCoolingSystemMaintenance
NOTICE
UseonlyCaterpillarproductsorcommercialproductsthathave passedCaterpillar'sEC-1specificationforpremixedorconcentrated coolants.
UseonlyCaterpillarExtenderwithLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze.
MixingLongLifeCoolant/Antifreezewithotherproductsreducesthe LongLifeCoolant/Antifreezeservicelife.Failuretofollowthe recommendationsincludedinthissectioncanreducecoolingsystem componentlife.
Inordertomaintainthecorrectbalanceofantifreezeandadditives,careshouldbetakentomaintain theproperLongLifeCoolant/Antifreezeconcentration.Reducingtheamountofantifreezelowersthe proportionofadditive,thusloweringthecoolant'sabilitytoprotectthecoolingsystemfrompitting, cavitation,erosion,anddeposits.
ProperLongLifeCoolant/AntifreezeAdditions
NOTE:DONOTaddLongLifeCoolant/AntifreezeConcentrateasamakeupsolutionforroutine coolingsystemtop-off.AddingconcentratedLongLifeCoolant/Antifreezeincreasesthe concentrationofglycolinthecoolingsystem.
Duringnormalmaintenance,useapremixedsolutionofapprovedwaterandLongLife Coolant/Antifreezeasatop-offtothecoolingsystemtobringthecoolanttotheproperlevel.Use LongLifeCoolant/AntifreezeoracoolantthatmeetsCaterpillar'sEC-1specification.Ifacoolantthat meetsEC-1isnotavailable,usedistilledorde-ionizedwaterasamake-up.Checktheglycollevelof thecoolingsystemwiththe1U-7298CoolantTester(°C)orthe1U-7297CoolantTester(°F).Use LongLifeCoolant/AntifreezeConcentratetorestoretheproperglycolconcentrationbeforetheengine isexposedtofreezingtemperatures.
NOTICE
DonotuseconventionalcoolanttotopoffacoolingsystemusingLong LifeCoolant/Antifreeze.
Donotusesupplementalcoolantadditivesotherthanextenderin coolingsystemsfilledwithLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze.
IfacoolingsystemusingLongLifeCoolant/Antifreezehasbeentoppedoffwithasmallamountof conventionalcoolantorifasupplementalcoolantadditivewasaddedtothesystembymistake,the systemwillnotbeharmed.
Shouldthecoolingsystembecomecontaminatedwithconventionalcoolantorsupplementalcoolant additiveexceeding10percentofthecoolingsystem'stotalcapacity,performoneofthefollowing actions:
*DrainthecoolingsystemandrefillthecoolingsystemwithLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze,or
*Maintainthecoolingsystemasifthecoolingsystemisfilledwithconventionalcoolant.
LongLifeCoolant/AntifreezeCoolingSystemCleaning
NOTE:NocleaningagentsaretobeusedwhenacoolingsystemusingLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze isdrained,flushed,andrefilled.
Cleanwateristheonlysystemcleaning/flushingagentrequiredwhenLongLifeCoolant/Antifreezeis drainedfromthecoolingsystem.
LongLifeCoolant/Antifreezecanberecycled.Thedrainedcoolantmixturecanbedistilledto separatetheethyleneglycolandwaterforreuse.ContactyourCaterpillardealerformoreinformation.
Afterdrainingandrefillingthecoolingsystem,operatetheenginewiththeradiatorfillercapremoved untilthecoolantreachesnormaloperatingtemperatureandthecoolantlevelstabilizes.Addcoolant mixtureasnecessarytofillthesystemtotheproperlevel.
ConvertingaCoolingSystemfromConventionalCoolanttoLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze
NOTE:WhenthecoolantischangedfromconventionalcoolanttoLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze,a Caterpillarcleanershouldbeused.AftertheuseofCaterpillarcoolingsystemcleaners,thesystem MUSTbethoroughlyflushedwithcleanwater.
ToconvertthecoolingsystemfromconventionalcoolanttoLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze,perform thefollowingprocedure:
1.Drainthecoolant.
2.Flushthesystemwithcleanwatertoremoveanydebris.
3.UseaCaterpillarcleanertocleanthesystem.Followtheinstructionsonthelabel.Caterpillar cleanerisavailablefromyourCaterpillardealer.
4.Drainthecleaner.Flushthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.
5.Fillthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.Operatetheengineuntilthecoolingsystemtemperatureis 49to66°C(120to150°F).
6.Drainandflushthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.
7.RepeatStep5andStep6.
8.FillthecoolingsystemwithLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze.
9.AttachalabeltothecoolingsystemtoindicatethesystemhasbeenconvertedtouseLongLife Coolant/Antifreeze.

Caterpillar'sDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantwasspecificallydesignedfordieselenginecooling systemsandnaturalgasenginecoolingsystems.DieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantisanalkalinetype, ethyleneglycolbasedformulacontaininginorganiccorrosioninhibitorsandanti-foamagents.Diesel EngineAntifreeze/Coolantwasformulatedwiththecorrectadditivelevelstoprotectmetalpartsin dieselengines.DieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantwillfurnishadequatecorrosionprotection,antifoamprotection,andcylinderliner/blockpittingprotection.Usea30percentDieselEngine Antifreeze/Coolantand70percentacceptablewater/supplementalcoolantadditivesolution.
MajoradvantagesofDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant:
Minimalsilicatecontent-Highsilicatecoolants,usedwithsupplementalcoolantadditives,cancause abuild-upofsolidsovertime.Build-upofsolidscancauseplugging,lossofheattransfer,andwater pumpsealdamage.DieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantsignificantlyreducessolidresiduebuild-upthat causesinhibitordropoutandwaterpumpsealdamage.
Noneedtoaddsupplementalcoolantadditiveoninitialfill-Supplementalcoolantadditivemustbe addedwithothercommerciallyavailablecoolants.
DieselEngineAntifreeze/CoolantisavailablefromyourCaterpillardealerinthefollowingquantities:
ProperAntifreezeConcentrations
UsethetabletodetermineconcentrationsofDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolanttomixwithacceptable waterandsupplementalcoolantadditive.
AcceptableAntifreeze/Coolant
AnylowsilicatecoolantthatmeetsTruckMaintenanceCouncil(TMC)RecommendedPractice(RP) 329,TMCRP330,orASTMD4985requirementswhenusedwithsupplementalcoolantadditivesis acceptable.
Caterpillarrecommendsaminimumof30percentglycolto70percentwater/supplementalcoolant additiveforpropercorrosionprotection.AllCaterpillarengineswithair-to-airaftercooling(ATAAC) requireaminimumconcentrationof30percentglycoltopreventwaterpumpcavitation.
While30percentglycolistheminimumacceptablevolume,Caterpillarprefersa50percentglycol and50percentwater/supplementalcoolantadditivemixtureforoptimumperformance.
WhenusingDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant,nosupplementalcoolantadditiveisnecessaryon initialfillbecausesupplementalcoolantadditiveisintheDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant. SupplementalcoolantadditivemustbeaddedwithcommercialcoolantsmeetingASTMD4985at initialfill.SupplementalcoolantadditivemustbereplenishedwithbothCaterpillarDieselEngine Antifreeze/Coolantandothercommercialcoolantsatregularserviceintervals.Refertothechartfor quantitiesofCaterpillarLiquidSCAtomixwithASTMD4985commercialcoolantsatinitialfill.
Supplementalcoolingsystemadditivecontainsalkali.Toprevent personalinjury,donotdrink,avoidcontactwiththeskinandeyes.
ThecoolingsystemMUSTcontainsupplementalcoolantadditivefor properengineprotection,regardlessofantifreezeconcentration.
NOTICE
DONOTmixCaterpillar'ssupplementalcoolantadditiveorcoolant additiveelementswithanothermanufacturer'sproducts.Selecta coolingsystemtreatmentanduseitexclusively.
Supplementalcoolantadditiveisnecessaryforproperconventionalcoolantmaintenance.Most coolantsolutionsDONOTcontainsufficientsupplementalcoolantadditivefordieselengine application.
NOTICE
Donotexceedtherecommendedsixpercentsupplementalcoolant additiveconcentration.Excessivesupplementalcoolantadditive concentrationcanformdepositsonthehighertemperaturesurfacesof thecoolingsystem,reducingtheengine'sheattransfercharacteristics. Reducedheattransfercouldcausecrackingofthecylinderheadand otherhightemperaturecomponents.Excessivesupplementalcoolant additiveconcentrationcouldalsoresultinradiatortubeblockage, overheating,and/oracceleratedwaterpumpsealwear.Neveruseboth liquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveandthespin-onelement(if equipped)atthesametime.Theuseofthoseadditivestogethercould resultinsupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationexceedingthe recommendedsixpercentmaximum.
Useliquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveorasupplementalcoolantadditiveelement(ifequipped)to maintainathreetosixpercentsupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationinthecoolant.
NOTE:Caterpillartestkitscheckforconcentrationofnitritesinthecoolantsolution.Some manufacturers'supplementalcoolantadditivearephosphatebased.Caterpillartestkitsprovide inaccurateresultswithphosphatebasedsupplementalcoolantadditive.Commercialsupplemental coolantadditiveproductsmustcontainsilicatesandaminimumof70gramsper3.8L(1USgal) (1200ppm)nitrites.Ifanothermanufacturer'ssupplementalcoolantadditiveisused,usethat manufacturer'stestkit.Followthemanufacturer'srecommendationsforcoolingsystemtreatmentand testevaluation.
Testthecoolantperiodicallytomonitorsupplementalcoolantadditivelevels.Usethe4C-9301Test KittocheckforCaterpillarsupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentration.Thekitalsoprovidescooling systemmaintenancerecommendations.ThiskitisspecificallyforusewithCaterpillarsupplemental
coolantadditive's.The8T-5296TestKitcanalsobeusedtocheckforCaterpillarsupplemental coolantadditiveconcentration.

Inapplicationswherefreezeprotectionisnotrequired,orwhereantifreezeisnotavailable,acoolant mixtureofacceptablewaterandsupplementalcoolantadditivecanbeused.Awater/supplemental coolantadditivesystemshouldmaintainasixtoeightpercentsupplementalcoolantadditive concentration.DONOTexceedeightpercentmaximumsupplementalcoolantadditive concentration.Supplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationlevelsmustbemonitored.
The8T-5296TestKitcanbeusedtoevaluatethesupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationin water/supplementalcoolantadditivecoolant,withthefollowingmodificationstolabelinstruction Step3andStep5.

ConventionalCoolingSystemMaintenance
Checktheantifreezesolutionfrequentlyincoldweathertoensureadequatefreezeprotection.Testthe concentrationorsubmitacoolantsampletoyourCaterpillardealerinordertomonitorthe supplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationinyourengine'scoolantmixtureevery250servicehours ormonthly,whichevercomesfirst.Supplementalcoolantadditiveoramaintenanceadditiveelement (ifequipped)maybeneededevery250servicehoursormonthly,whichevercomefirst.
NOTICE
Topreventover-inhibitingtheengine'scoolingsystem,donotuseboth supplementalcoolantadditiveliquidandasupplementalcoolant additiveelement(ifequipped)atthesametime.Useonemethod exclusively.
WhenusingDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantandsupplementalcoolantadditive,thecoolingsystem shouldbedrained,cleaned,flushed,andfilledwithnewcoolantevery3000servicehoursorevery twoyears,whichevercomefirst.RefertothetopicMaintenanceIntervalsinthismanual.
WhenNOTusingCaterpillarDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantandsupplementalcoolantadditive, thedrain/flushproceduremustbeperformedatleasteveryyear.
Afterdrainingandrefillingthecoolingsystem,operatetheenginewiththeradiatorfillercapremoved untilthecoolantreachesnormaloperatingtemperatureandthecoolantlevelstabilizes.Addcoolant mixtureasnecessarytofillthesystemtotheproperlevel.
CoolingSystemCleaning
Draining,cleaning,andflushingthecoolingsystemremovessmallparticles,undesirablechemicals, scale,andotherdepositformations.Notperformingmaintenanceonthecoolingsystemcan eventuallycauseengineoverheatingproblemsthatcouldresultinseveredamagetoengineand components.
Cleanthecoolingsystemifthesystembecomescontaminated,iftheengineoverheats,oriffoaming isobserved.
Caterpillar'sFastActingCoolingSystemCleanerisdesignedtocleanthesystemofharmfulscaleand corrosion.Thecleanerdissolvesmineralscale,corrosionproducts,lightoilcontamination,and sludge.

NOTICE
Waterthatdoesnotmeettheminimumacceptablelimitswillreduce engineservicelifewhenusedincoolingsystems.
Ifyouarenotsureofthecontentofthewater,contactyourCaterpillardealer,yourlocalwater department,youragriculturalagent,oranindependentlaboratorytoanalyzethewater.
Additives
Additivesmustbeincludedinallcoolantmixtures.Additiveshelppreventtheformationofrust, scale,andmineraldeposits.Additivesprotectmetalsfromcorrosion,preventlinercavitation,and containanti-foamingagents.Additivesaredepletedduringengineoperationandneedtobe replenished.Additivescanbereplenishedthroughtheadditionofsupplementalcoolantadditives (usedwithconventionalcoolants)orExtender(usedwithCaterpillarLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze).
Nitritesornitriteandmolybdateadditivesprotectthecylinderlinerfromcavitationcorrosion.Nitrites aredepleted,creatingtheneedforadditivesorExtender.AdditivesandExtenderalsocontainother inhibitorsthatcanbedepletedfromcoolingsystems.
Aninsufficientadditiveconcentrationdoesnotprovideadequateprotectionforcoolingsystems.An excessiveadditiveconcentrationcancauseadditivestodropoutofthesolution,depositinsidethe coolingsystem,orformagelintheradiator.Depositscanbeintheformofsludgeandscalewhich accumulateonhotenginesurfaces.Depositsreducecoolingsystemeffectiveness,orcausewater pumpleaks.
Tomaintainconventionalcoolingsystemprotection,itisnecessarytomonitorsupplementalcoolant additiveconcentration.Maintaintheproperadditivelevelsinthecoolingsystem.
Glycol
Enginecoolantglycolisnormallyeitherethyleneorpropylene.Glycolraisestheboilingpointof watertohelppreventboil-over,providesfreezeprotection,helpspreventwaterpumpcavitation,and reducescylinderlinerpitting.
NOTICE
Forambienttemperaturesrequiringlowerfreezeprotection(higher than50percentglycol),useethyleneglycol.DONOTusepropylene glycol.
Properfreeze/boilprotectionrequirestheproperratioofglycolandacceptablewater.Usethe followingchartstodetermineglycolconcentrationstomixwithacceptablewater.
Usethe1U-7298CoolantTester(°C)orthe1U-7297CoolantTester(°F)tocheckthecoolant solutionperiodicallytoensureadequatefreeze/boilprotection.Therefractometersgiveimmediate, accuratereadingsandcanbeusedwithethyleneorpropyleneglycol.

Preferred-Caterpillar'sLongLifeCoolant/Antifreeze(LLCA).
Recommended-Caterpillar'sDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant(DEAC).
Acceptable-AnylowsilicatecoolantthatmeetsTruckMaintenanceCouncil(TMC)Recommended Practice(RP)329,TMCRP330,orASTMD4985requirementswhenusedwithsupplementalcoolant additives.
Permitted-Amixtureofacceptablewaterandasupplementalcoolantadditive,wherefreeze protectionisnotnecessary.
Unacceptable-AnyhighsilicatecoolantthatisclassifiedasmeetingASTMD3306.
NOTICE
Mostcommercialenginecoolant/antifreezesareformulatedfor gasolineengineapplicationsandhavehighsilicatecontent.High silicatesarecondusivetocylinderlinercavitationandcorrosion. CaterpillarDOESNOTrecommendhighsilicatecoolant/antifreezes.

Neveraddcoolanttoanoverheatedengine.Allowtheenginetocool first.Donotaddcoolanttooquickly.Fillingthecoolingsystematover 19L(5USgal)perminutecancreateairpocketsinthecoolingsystem. Enginedamagecanresult.
Whenfillingoraddingcoolanttothesystem,premixthecoolantsolutionpriortopouringitintothe coolingsystem.Pure,undilutedglycolwillfreezeat-23°C(-0°F).Useacoolantsolutionthatisina rangewhichwillprovideprotectiontothelowestexpectedoutside(ambient)temperatureandprovide therequiredboil-overprotection.
