4.Removelocknut(4)andbolt(5).
5.Removetheboltandnut(2).
6.Lifthook(3)andsecurethehookintheupwardpositionbyreinstallingtheboltandnut(4).
7.Slowlylowertheliftingdeviceinordertoallowthecompartmentdoorfortheballastto swingdownward.
8.Thetorqueforbolt(5)shouldbe28N·m(21lbft).
9.Useasuitableliftingdeviceinordertoremovetheindividualballastorinstalltheindividual ballast.Theweightofeachballastis1750kg(3858lb).
10.Lowertheenginecover.
Note:Removetheballastandinstalltheballastinleftandrightpairsinordertomaintainproper balanceofthemachine.

Belts-Inspect/Adjust/Replace

Yourenginecanbeequippedwithafandrivebeltandwithaccessorydrivebelts.Yourenginecan alsobeequippedwithanalternatorbelt.Formaximumengineperformanceandmaximum utilizationofyourengine,inspectthebeltsforwearandforcracking.Checkthebelttension. Adjustthebelttensioninordertominimizebeltslippage.Beltslippagewilldecreasethebeltlife. Beltslippagewillalsocausepoorperformanceofthealternatorandofanydrivenequipment.
Ifnewbeltsareinstalled,recheckthebeltadjustmentafter30minutesofoperation.Iftwobeltsor morearerequiredforanapplication,replacethebeltsinbeltsets.Ifonlyonebeltofamatchedset isreplaced,thenewbeltwillcarrymoreload.Thisisduetothefactthattheolderbeltsare stretched.Theadditionalloadonthenewbeltcouldcausethenewbelttobreak.
AlternatorBelt
1.Stoptheengine.
2.Opentheenginecompartment.

3.Tocheckthebelttension,apply110N(25lb)offorcemidwaybetweenthepulleys. Correctlyadjustedbeltswilldeflect14to20mm(1/2to3/4inch).
4.Inordertoadjustthealternatorbelt,loosenthealternatoradjustingbracketboltandthe mountingbracketbolt.
5.Toachievethecorrectbelttension,movethealternatorinwardormovethealternator outward,asrequired.
6.Ifnecessary,useaprybartobearagainstthealternatorbracket.
7.Tightenthemountingbracketboltandthealternatoradjustingbracketbolt.
8.Ifnewbeltsareinstalled,checkthebeltadjustmentagainafter30minutesofengine operationattheratedspeed.
9.Checkthepositionofthefanshroud.Adjustthepositionofthefanshroudsothatthefan willnotrubagainsttheshroud.Maintaina9.4mm(0.38inch)clearancebetweenthefan andtheshroud.

CoolingSystemCoolant(ELC)-Change

Drainthecoolantwheneverthecoolantisdirty.Drainthecoolantwhenfoamisobserved.
1.Stoptheengine.Allowthecoolingsystemtocoolcompletely.
2.Openthehoodfortheengine.


Personalinjurycanresultfromhotcoolant,steamandalkali.
Atoperatingtemperature,enginecoolantishotandunderpressure.The radiatorandalllinestoheatersortheenginecontainhotcoolantor steam.Anycontactcancausesevereburns.
Removecoolingsystempressurecapslowlytorelievepressureonly whenengineisstoppedandcoolingsystempressurecapiscoolenough totouchwithyourbarehand.
Donotattempttotightenhoseconnectionswhenthecoolantishot,the hosecancomeoffcausingburns.
CoolingSystemCoolantAdditivecontainsalkali.Avoidcontactwith skinandeyes.
3.Slowlyloosenradiatorcap(1)andremoveradiatorcap(1).
4.Removethecapforexpansiontank(3).
NOTICE
Caremustbetakentoensurethatfluidsarecontainedduring performanceofinspection,maintenance,testing,adjustingandrepair oftheproduct.Bepreparedtocollectthefluidwithsuitablecontainers beforeopeninganycompartmentordisassemblinganycomponent containingfluids.
RefertoSpecialPublication,NENG2500,"CaterpillarToolsandShop ProductsGuide"fortoolsandsuppliessuitabletocollectandcontain fluidsonCaterpillarproducts.
Disposeofallfluidsaccordingtolocalregulationsandmandates.
5.Drainvalve(2)islocatedonthebottomcorneroftheradiator.Opendrainvalve(2).Allow thecoolanttodrainintoasuitablecontainer.
6.Closedrainvalve(2).Filltheradiatorwithasolutionwhichconsistsofcleanwaterandof coolingsystemcleaner.Oncetheradiatorisfilled,fillthecoolingsystemexpansiontankto thefullline.Theconcentrationofthecoolingsystemcleanerinthesolutionshouldbe between6percentand10percent.
7.Installradiatorcap(1)andthecapfortheexpansiontank(3).
8.Closethehoodfortheengine.
9.Starttheengine.Runtheenginefor90minutes.Stoptheengine.Allowthecoolingsystem tocoolcompletely.
10.Slowlyloosenradiatorcap(1)andremoveradiatorcap(1).
11.Removethecapforexpansiontank(3).
12.Drainthecleaningsolutionintoasuitablecontainer.
13.Whiletheengineisstopped,flushthesystemwithwater.Flushthesystemuntilthedraining wateristransparent.
14.Closedrainvalve(2).
NOTICE
MixingExtendedLifeCoolant(ELC)withotherproductsreducesthe effectivenessofthecoolantandshortenscoolantlife.Useonly Caterpillarproductsorcommercialproductsthathavepassedthe CaterpillarEC-1specificationsforpremixedorconcentratecoolants. UseonlyCaterpillarExtenderwithCaterpillarELC.Failuretofollow theserecommendationscouldresultinthedamagetocoolingsystems components.
IfELCcoolingsystemcontaminationoccurs,refertoOperationand Maintenance,"ExtendedLifeCoolant(ELC)"underthetopicELC CoolingSystemContamination.
15.Addthecoolantsolution.Seethefollowingtopics:

Note:IfyouareusingCaterpillarantifreeze,donotaddthesupplementalcoolantadditiveat thistime.
16.Starttheengine.Runtheenginewithouttheradiatorcapuntilthethermostatopensandthe coolantlevelstabilizes.
17.Completelyfilltheradiator.
Note:Theradiatormustremaincompletelyfullinorderfortheexpansiontanktowork properly.
18.Replaceradiatorcap(1)ifthegasketisdamaged.Installradiatorcap(1).
