Operation

Theoperationsectionisareferenceforthenewoperatorandarefresherfortheexperienced operator.Thissectionincludesadiscussionofgauges,switches,machinecontrols,attachment controls,transportation,andtowinginformation.

Photographsandillustrationsguidetheoperatorthroughcorrectproceduresofchecking,starting, operating,andstoppingthemachine.

Operatingtechniquesoutlinedinthispublicationarebasic.Skillandtechniquesdevelopasthe operatorgainsknowledgeofthemachineanditscapabilities.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS) liststheitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsare listedunderthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhe pagenumberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance. UsetheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenance procedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, weekly,monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsifthecalendarintervals

providemoreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeter reading.Performtherecommendedserviceattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Undersevere,dusty,orwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500 servicehoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursor monthlyandevery10servicehoursordaily.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairareessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavy-dutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsibleforthe performanceoftherequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenance Manual,andServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,ortorenderinoperative,anyemission-relateddevice orelementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewithall applicableregulationsoftheintendedcountrytowhichithasbeenshipped.Certainelementsof themachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeair system,andcoolingsystemmaybeemission-relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedby Caterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcan adverselyaffectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertifications suchasbrakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerfor furtherinformation.

ProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Toprovideuniformequipmentidentification,constructionequipmentmanufacturers aremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentificationnumberingstandard. Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplytoall machinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN. Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

2.MachineDescriptor(characters4-8)

3.CheckCharacter(character9)

4.MachineIndicatorSection(MIS)orProductSequenceNumber(characters10-17).Thesewere previouslyreferredtoastheSerialNumber.

MachinesandgeneratorsetsproducedbeforeFirstQuarter2001willmaintaintheir8character PINformat.

Componentssuchasengines,transmissions,axles,andworktoolswillcontinuetousean8 characterSerialNumber(S/N).

Astandardoilchangeintervalisevery1000servicehourswhen preferredoilsareusedandS·O·Smonitoringoftheoilisperformed every250servicehours.Anoilchangeisstronglyrecommendedwhen theoildeteriorationorcontaminationisdetected.

Whentheserequirementsarenotmet,shortentheoilchangeinterval toevery250servicehours,oruseanS·O·SServicesoilsamplingand analysisprograminordertodetermineanacceptableoilchange interval.

Ifyouselectanintervalforoilchangethatistoolong,youmaydamage theaircompressor.

OilChangeInterval

Thestandardoilchangeintervalisevery1000servicehourswhenusingalubricantthatmeetsthe performancerequirementsofthepreferredoilsandS·O·Smonitoringoftheoilisperformedevery 250servicehours.

Anoilchangeisstronglyrecommendedwhentheoildeteriorationorcontaminationisdetected. Themaintenanceintervalfortheoilfilterisnotchanged.

Machinesthatusesecondchoiceoilsarenotincludedinthe1000servicehourmaintenance interval.Whensecondchoiceoilsareused,shortentheoilchangeintervaltoevery250service hours,oruseanS·O·SServicesoilsamplingandanalysisprogramtodetermineanacceptableoil changeinterval.

8.Checkthatbypasscheckvalvesareclosedandundamaged.

9.LubricatetheO-ringintheheadassemblywithcleansystemfluidandpushtheopenendof thefilterelementintotheheadassembly.

10.Cleanoutthefilterbowlandlightlylubricatethethreadswithcleansystemfluid.

11.Screwthefilterbowlontotheheadassemblyuntilthebowlbottoms.Thesealingdoesnot improvewithovertightening.

9.ApplyathincoatofoiltoO-ringofthenewfilterelement.Installnewfilterelementinside thereceivertank.Besurethatbothgroundingspringsarefittedateachendoftheelement.

10.Reinstalltheseparatorplate.ReinstalltheSealingNut(4)andJamNut(3).

Note:Ensurethatthemetalcontactsembeddedinthegasketareseatedcorrectlyand providepropercontactbetweenthereceivertankandreceivertankcover.

11.Reinstallthereceivertankcoveronthereceivertankandreinstallall12Capscrews.

12.Starttheengineandallowtheoiltowarm.Checkforleaks.Stoptheengine.

13.Checktheoillevel.Ifnecessary,addoil.

7.UsetheBoomtoswingthecovertooneside.Besurethattheedgeofthecoverrestsonthe flangeofthetankforsupport.

8.LiftoutthePrimaryandSecondarySeparatorElements.Disposeoftheelementsaccording tolocalregulations.

9.Cleanthesurfaceofthereceivertankflangeofanyoldgasketmaterial,beingcarefulnotto letanymaterialfallintothetank.Dothesamewiththeundersideofthecover.

10.InstallnewPrimaryandSecondarySeparatorElementswithbondedgaskets.

Note:Ensurethatthemetalcontactsembeddedinthegasketareseatedcorrectlyand providepropercontactbetweenthereceivertankandreceivertankcover.

11.Reinstallthecoverandreinstallthecapscrewsandlockwashers.

12.Tightenthecapscrewsevenlyinacriss-crosspattern.Alwaystightencapscrewsalternately atoppositesidesofthecover.

13.InstallthePrimaryandSecondaryOilReturntubes.Carefullypushthetubestothebottom oftheseparator,thenliftslightly.Retightentheflextubeconnectors.

14.Reconnectanyconnectionsremovedandmakesurethatallconnectionsaretight.

15.Starttheengineandallowtheoiltowarm.Checkforleaks.Stoptheengine.

16.Checktheoillevel.Ifnecessary,addoil.

1.Loosentworetainingknobs.Turnknobcounterclockwisetoremovethecoverplate.

2.Removethefilter.

3.Taptheairfiltertoremovethedirt.Donotusecompressedairtocleanthefilter.

4.Afteryoucleanthefilterelement,inspectthefilterelement.Ifthefilterelementisdamaged orbadlycontaminated,useanewfilterelement.Makesurethatthefilterelementisdry.

5.Installthefilterelementandcoverplate.Turnknobsclockwisetosecurethecoverplate.

NOTICE

1.Ifequipped,removethevalveandsqueezetheoutlettubebeneatheachfilter.Doingsowill purgethedirtfromtheoutlettubes.

2.Releasethelatchesandremovethefiltercoverbypullingthecoverhandle.Cleanthefilter cover.

3.Removeprimaryfilterelement(5)fromthefilterhousing(3).Inspecttheprimaryfilter element.Cleanorreplaceifnecessary.

Note:Referto"Inspecting&CleaningPrimaryAirFilterElements".

NOTICE

Alwaysreplacethesecondaryfilterelement(6).Neverattempttoreuse thesecondaryfilterelementbycleaningtheelement.

Whentheprimaryfilterelementisreplaced,thesecondaryfilter elementshouldbereplaced.

Thesecondaryfilterelementshouldbereplacediftheairfilteris restrictedaftertheinstallationofacleanprimaryfilterelement.

4.Removethesecondaryfilterelement.Examinethesecondaryfilterelementforcleanliness. Replaceifnecessary.

Note:Replacethesecondaryfilterelementiftheprimaryelementisreplaced.Replacethe secondaryfilterelementiftheairfilterremainsrestrictedaftertheinstallationofaprimary filterelementthathasbeencleaned.

5.Covertheairinletopening.Cleantheinsideoftheaircleanerhousing.
