After Starting the Engine

NOTICE

Keep engine speed low until the engine oil pressure registers on the gauge. If it does not register within ten seconds, stop the engine and investigate the cause before starting again. Failure to do so, can cause engine damage.

Do not operate this machine until you have positive indication that the coupler pins are fully engaged. Check for engagement by:

1. Push the tilt control to tilt the attachment down.

2. Put down pressure on attachment.

NOTICE

Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again.

Engine Starting Below 0°C (+32°F)

If Equipped with Ether Starting Aid

NOTICE

Inject starting aid (ether), only while cranking the engine, or after initial start-up, until the engine is running smoothly.

Use sparingly, excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage.

Wait approximately two seconds before injecting again.

Use ether for cold starting purposes only.

After every 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for starting motor to cool before cranking again.

Engine Starting with Jumper Cables

Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode.

Prevent sparks near the batteries. They could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow jump cable ends to contact each other or the machine.

Do not smoke when checking battery electrolyte levels.

Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.

Always wear eye protection when starting a machine with jump cables.

Improper jump procedures can cause an explosion resulting in personal injury.

Always connect battery positive (+) to battery positive (+) and battery negative (-) to battery negative (-).

Jump only with a battery source and with the same voltage as the stalled machine.

Turn off all lights and accessories on the stalled machine. Otherwise, they will operate when the jump source is connected.

NOTICE

When starting from another machine, make sure the machines do not touch. This could prevent damage to engine bearings and electrical circuits.

Turn on (close) the disconnect switch prior to the boost connection to prevent damage to electrical components on the stalled machine.

Severely discharged maintenance free batteries might not fully recharge by the alternator alone after jump starting.

The batteries must be charged to the proper voltage by a battery charger.

Many batteries thought to be unusable, are still rechargeable.

This machine has a 24 volt starting system. Use only equal voltage for jump starting. Use of a welder or higher voltage will damage the electrical system.

Refer to Special Instruction, form SEHS7633, Battery Test Procedure, available from your Caterpillar dealer, for complete testing and charging information.

Machine Adjustments

Attachment Positioner - Tilt Adjustment

Use caution to avoid possible personal injury when adjusting the attachment positioner.

Stop the engine and lower all equipment to relieve the hydraulic pressure.

Engage the parking brake and block the tires to prevent sudden movement of the machine.

Keep unauthorized personnel off the machine.

NOTE:

5.  Lift Kickout Attachment

Use caution to avoid possible personal injury when adjusting the attachment lift kickout.

Keep personnel off the machine. Clear the area when working under or around the attachment linkage.

With the attachment raised, proper support must be provided for the attachment and/or the linkage.

Do not engage the parking brake while the machine is moving unless an emergency exists. The use of the parking brake as a service brake in regular operation will cause severe damage to the parking brake system.
