Contaminationisdefinedasthepresenceofunwantedforeignsubstancesinfluidsystemsorfluidwetted parts.Contaminationaltersthepropertiesoffluids,causesdamageoffluidsystems,andpreventssystems andcomponentsfromattainingthedesiredreliabilityanddurability.Contaminationistheprimarycauseof fluidsystemfailures.
Contaminantsincludeawidevarietyofunwantedsubstancesincludingbutnotlimitedtothefollowing:
•Foreignandabrasivesubstancessuchaswearparticles,fibers,dirt,anddust
•Chemicalsubstancessuchasproductsofcombustionthataresuspendedinthefluids
•Crosscontaminationofwater,coolant,oil,andfuel
•Biologicalmicro-organismssuchasalgaeorfungi
•Physical/chemicalcontaminantssuchasproductsofoxidationandheat
Somecontaminantsaregeneratedwithinthefluidsystemduetothenormaloperationofthesystem. Contaminantsmaybedrawnintothesystemfromtheoutsideenvironmentorcontaminatedfillfluidsor impropermaintenanceandrepairpractices.
Particlecontaminantsarevisibletothenakedeyeiftheparticlesareapproximately40µm(microns)and largerwhilesmallerparticlesarenotvisible.Particlecontaminantscancausedamageeveniftheparticlesare notvisibletothenakedeye.Thecriticalparticlesizeforwearparticlesinamoderndieselenginefuelsystem is4µm.
Contaminantsofalltypescanbecontrolledbyfollowingcontaminationcontrolpracticesandusing appropriatefiltration.RefertoyourOperationandMaintenanceManualandtoyourlocalCatdealerfor recommendations.
Controllingcontaminationisespeciallyimportantforcurrentmachinesystems.Currentmachinesystems suchashydraulicsystemsandfuelinjectionsystemsaredesignedwithclosetolerancesandoperateathigh pressuresforenhancedperformance.Thesedesignimprovementsemphasizetheimportanceofhigher performingfluids,enhancedfluidfiltration,andgreatlyimprovedfluidcleanlinesslevels.
MeasuringCleanliness
Fluidcleanlinesscanbemeasuredbytakingfluidsamplesfromvariousmachinecompartments.YourCat dealercananalyzethesamples.Particlecontaminantsaretypicallymeasuredbyparticlecounters.Chemical contaminantscanbemeasuredbyspecificanalysistechniquessuchasoxidation,water,orsoottests.Some chemicalcontaminants,suchaswaterinfuel,caninterferewiththeparticlecountersandcanbecountedas particles.RefertoyourCatS·O·SlabortoyourCatdealerformoreinformation.
Thenumberofparticlesinfluidsisexpressedin"ISO(InternationalOrganizationforStandardization)" ratings."ISO4406"Standardclassifiesfluidcleanlinessbythenumberandsizeofparticlesin1milliliterof fluid."ISO4406"Standardmeasuresparticlesizeinµm(microns)andreportstheresultingcountinthree coderangesX,Y&Z.Thethreecoderangedefinesthesizeanddistributionofparticlesin1milliliterof fluid:
•Thefirstcoderange,Xrepresentsthenumberofparticlesequaltoorlargerthan4µmpermilliliterof fluid.
•Thesecondcoderange,Yrepresentsthenumberofparticlesequaltoorlargerthan6µmpermilliliter offluid.
•Thethirdcoderange,Zrepresentsthenumberofparticlesequaltoorlargerthan14µmpermilliliter offluid.
Anexampleofan"ISO4406"particlecountis18/16/13.Cat"ISO"cleanlinessrecommendationsare expressedastwoorthreecodes,dependingonthemachinesystem.Thethreecoderangefollows"ISO4406" definitionsandisusedforliquidfuelssuchasdieselandgasoline.Thetwocodesystem,example"ISO/16/13",isusedforcertainlubricantsystems.Inthetwocodesystem,thefirstnumberisthenumberof particlesequaltoorlargerthan4µmpermilliliteroffluid.Thisnumberisnotrequiredandmaybe representedbyadash(-).Thesecondnumber(Y)andthethirdnumber(Z)follow"ISO4406"definitions. CatreportstheYandZcodesforlubricatingoilstokeepconsistencywitholderdataandreports.

CleanlinessStandardsforMachineSystems
Catrecommendsthatmachinesystemsbemaintainedatthefactorydefinedfluidcleanlinesstargets.
Cathasestablishedminimumfluidcleanlinesstargetsforfuelsandfilloilsandformachineroll-off.Fluids filledintothemachineorenginefilltanksarerecommendedtobeatthetargetlevelsprovidedinTable2or cleaner.Cleanlinesstargetsforapplicablemachinecomponentsystemsarereferredtoas"Roll-off".Roll-off isdefinedasthecleanlinessspecificationofthefluidthatistobeobtainedbeforethemachinereturnsto workaftermaintenanceandorsysteminvasionrepair.WhensystemfillfluidsandRoll-offaremaintainedat orcleanerthanthe"ISO"cleanlinesstargets,contamination-relatedeffectswillbereduced.

The"fill"fluidscleanlinesstargetisnotafluid"delivery"target.Thelevelofcleanlinessfordeliveredfluids isnotspecifiedbyCat.Customerscanworkwiththedistributorsorcarrierstodeterminethecleanlinesslevel ofdeliveredfluids.However,amoreeffectiveandeconomicmeanstoachievethefillcleanlinesstargetsisto filterthefluidspriortofillingintomachinetanksascomparedwithspecifyingdeliveryfluidcleanliness level.FollowtheguidelinesprovidedinthisContaminationControlarticle.
Althougholdertechnologymachinesmaynotbeabletomaintaintherecommendedcleanlinesstargetsof advancedmodels,thesamecontaminationcontrolinterventionmeasuressuchasfiltrationandsubsequent serviceproceduresshouldbeusedonallCatproducts.
Theviscosityandadditivesofpowertrainoilsincludingtransmission,gear,differential,andaxleoilscan interferewithparticlecounting.Analternativeoptionistofiltertheoilsusingadequatefiltrationtoensure cleanoilspriortofillinginthemachinecompartments.
Note:Whenparticlecountingnewmulti-viscosityengineoils,theremaybedifficultiesachievingcleanliness targets.Opticalparticlecounterscannotdistinguishbetweenparticulatecontaminantsandadditives.Donot useopticalparticlecountfortheevaluationofusedengineoilsbecausesootlevelsrenderoiltoodarkfor opticalparticlecounters.SootlevelsinusedengineoilsshouldbeevaluatedbyusingS·O·SServicesOil Analysis.
Whenfilteringengineoilbeforedispensingintotheenginetankorwhenengineoilkidneyloopingfiltration isdone,followtheserecommendations:
•Useengineoilfiltersof12micronsabsoluteefficiency.CatUltraHighEfficiencyLubefilteris recommended.ConsultyourCatdealerforthemostcurrentpartnumber.
•Ensurethatthetemperatureofengineoilis20°C(68°F)orhigher.
ConsultyourCatdealerforinformationandsolutionstoyouroilandfuelanalysisneeds.
GeneralContaminationControlRecommendationsorPractices
Maintainingalowcontaminationlevelcanreducedowntimeandcancontrolthemaintenancecostofthe machine.Theproductivelifeaswellasthereliabilityofcomponentsandfluidsystemsisoftenincreasedasa resultofpropercontaminationcontrolpractices.
Thefollowingaregeneralguidelinesforcontrollingcontaminants.
•RefertotheRecommendationsforFuelSystemsinthischapterforrecommendedfuelcleanliness levelsandguidelines.
•RefertothemachineOperationandMaintenanceManualfortherequiredmaintenanceforallmachine compartments.
•Whenyouaddoiltoamachine,useadequatefiltrationinordertocleantheoiltomeetthetargets providedinTable2.
•PerformscheduledS·O·SServicesOilAnalysisforcontaminationinordertomaintainthe recommendedISOcleanlinessleveloffillandmachinefluids.RefertotheS·O·SOilAnalysissection inthisSpecialPublication.TheparticlecountanalysiscanbeperformedbyyourCatdealer.Particle countcanbeconductedduringthescheduledS·O·SServicesOilAnalysisforthecompartment.Extra oilsamplesarenotrequiredfortheparticlecountsampling.
•UseonlycoolantsthatarerecommendedbyCatforyourmachine.Followtherecommended maintenanceprocedureforthecoolingsystemintheOperationandMaintenanceManualforyour machine.
•Maintaintheengineairfiltersandairintakesystemtoavoidunwantedcontaminantingression.
•Followcontaminationcontrolpracticesfortheshoparea,component/machinedisassemblyareas,parts, shoptools,testsetups,testareas,storageareasandwastecollectionareas,Keepcomponentsclean duringinspection,assembly,testing,andfillingmachineswithcleanfluids.Goodpracticeswill enhancecomponentlifeandreducedowntimeassociatedwithcontaminants.YourCatdealercan providedetailsonpropercontaminationprocessesandpractices.
•Followcontaminationcontrolpracticesfortheworkplaceandfortheworksite.Maintainingcleanoil fillfluidssavestimeandeffortandensuresthatfillfluidsareatthepropercleanlinesslevels.
•Useproperlydesignedandmaintainedbulkstoragefluidstanks.
•Protectthefluidsstoragetanksfromdirtandwaterentrybyusing4µmorlessabsoluteefficiency breatherswiththeabilitytoremovewater.
•Keeptheareasaroundthetanksfillerneckscleanofdebrisandwater.
•Drainthestoragetanksfromwaterandsedimentsfrequently.Thedrainingscheduledependsonuseof properinletandoutletfilters,theuseof4µmbreatherswiththeabilitytoremovewater,andfollowing recommendedcontaminationcontrolpractices.Basedonthecontaminationcontrolprogramfollowed, and/oronthefuelsupplierrecommendations,thestoragetankdrainingschedulemaybeasfrequentas dailyuntilnowaterispresent,andthencanbeextendedtolongerperiods.
•Installandmaintainaproperlydesignedandgroundedfiltrationsystem.Filtrationshouldincludeatthe entryandatthedispensingpoint.Continuousbulkfiltrationmayberequiredtoensurethatdispensed oilsmeetthecleanlinesstarget.
•Cover,protect,andensurecleanlinessofallconnectionhoses,fittings,anddispensingnozzles.
Note:BulkfuelfiltrationunitsareavailablethroughyourCatdealer.Propermaintenancepracticesofthe bulkfiltrationsystemsareavailablethroughyourCatdealer.

Fuelsof"ISO18/16/13"cleanlinesslevelorcleanerasdispensedintotheengineormachinefueltankshould beused.Reducepowerloss,failures,andrelateddowntimeofengineswillresult.Thiscleanlinesslevelis importantfornewfuelsystemdesignssuchasCommonRailinjectionsystemsandunitinjectionsystems. Injectionsystemdesignsutilizehigherfuelpressuresandtightclearancesbetweenmovingpartsinorderto meetrequiredstringentemissionsregulations.Peakinjectionpressuresincurrentfuelinjectionsystemsmay exceed30,000psi.Clearancesinthesesystemsarelessthan5µm.Asaresult,particlecontaminantsassmall as4µmcancausescoringandscratchingofinternalpumpandinjectorsurfacesandofinjectornozzles.
Waterinthefuelcausescavitation,corrosionoffuelsystemparts,andprovidesanenvironmentwhere microbialgrowthinthefuelcanflourish.Othersourcesoffuelcontaminationaresoaps,gels,orother compoundsthatmayresultfromundesirablechemicalinteractionsinthefuels,particularlyinUltraLow SulfurDiesel(ULSD).Gelsandothercompoundscanalsoforminbiodieselfuelatlowtemperaturesorif biodieselisstoredforextendedperiods.Thebestindicationofmicrobialcontamination,fueladditives,or coldtemperaturegelisrapidfilterpluggingofbulkfuelfiltersormachinefuelfilters.
Inordertoreducedowntimeduetocontamination,followthesefuelmaintenanceguidelines.Also,follow theGeneralContaminationControlRecommendationsorPracticesgivenaboveinthisChapter:
•Usehigh-qualityfuelsperrecommendedandrequiredspecifications(refertotheFuelChapterinthis SpecialPublication)
•Fillmachinefueltankswithfuelsof"ISO18/16/13"cleanlinesslevelorcleaner,inparticularfor engineswithcommonrailandunitinjectionsystems.Whenyourefuelthemachine,filterthefuel througha4µmabsolutefilter(Beta4=75upto200)inordertoreachtherecommendedcleanliness level.Thisfiltrationshouldbelocatedatthedevicethatdispensesthefueltotheengineormachine fueltank.Inaddition,filtrationatthedispensingpointshouldremovewatertoensurethatfuelis dispensedat500ppmwaterorless.
•Catrecommendstheuseofbulkfuelfilter/coalescerunitswhichcleanthefuelofbothparticulate contaminationandwaterinasinglepass.Catoffersheavy-dutyfilter/coalescerunitstoaccommodate fuelingratesfrom50to300gpm(gallonsperminute).
•EnsurethatyouuseCatAdvancedEfficiencyFuelFilters.Changeyourfuelfiltersperrecommended servicerequirementsorasneeded.
•DrainyourwaterseparatorsdailypertheOperationandMaintenanceManualofyourmachine.
•Drainyourfueltanksofsedim%ntandwaterpertheOperationandMaintenanceManualofyour machineorsoonerasfuelconditionindicates.
•Installandmaintainaproperlydesignedbulkfilter/coalescerfiltrationsystem.Continuousbulk filtrationsystemsmayberequiredtoensurethatdispensedfuelmeetsthecleanlinesstarget.Consult yourCatdealerforavailabilityofbulkfiltrationproducts.
•Centrifugalfiltersmayneedtobeusedasapre-filterwithfuelthatisseverelycontaminatedwithgross amountsofwaterand/orlargeparticulatecontaminants.Centrifugalfilterscaneffectivelyremovelarge contaminants,butmaynotbeabletoremovethesmallabrasiveparticlesrequiredtoachievethe recommended"ISO"cleanlinesslevel.Bulkfilter/coalescersarenecessaryasafinalfilterinorderto achievetherecommendedcleanlinesslevel.
•Installdesiccanttypebreathersof4µmorlessabsoluteefficiencywiththeabilitytoremovewateron bulkstoragetanks.
•Followproperpracticesoffueltransportation.Filtrationfromthestoragetanktothemachinepromotes thedeliveryofcleanfueltomachinetank.Fuelfiltrationcanbeinstalledateachtransportstagein ordertokeepthefuelclean.
•Cover,protect,andensurecleanlinessofallconnectionhoses,fittings,anddispensingnozzles.

Inordertomeetexpectedfuelsystemcomponentlife,4micron(c) absoluteorlesssecondaryfuelfiltrationisrequiredforallCatdiesel enginesthatareequippedwithcommon-railfuelsystems.Also,4 micron(c)absoluteorlesssecondaryfuelfiltrationisrequiredforall Catdieselenginesthatareequippedwithunitinjectedfuelsystems. CatfiltersarenotdesignedtobeusedonotherOEMenginesormachines.Followthemanufacturer recommendationswhenusingCatfiltersonotherOEMenginesormachines.
Catfiltersareextensivelytestedandvalidatedtoensurethatthefiltersmeetallofthesystemand performancerequirementsofCatequipmentorenginesthefiltersaredesignedfor.Caterpillardoesnotverify whetherCatfiltersmeetthesystemandperformancerequirementsofothermanufacturesequipment/engines. CaterpillarexpectsthecustomerstoutilizeCatfiltersonCatequipmentandenginestoensureoptimum systemperformanceandthebestcomponentprotection.Othermanufacturesequipment/enginesmayhave differentperformanceparameters/requirementsthatdemandspecificfiltrationsolutions.

Naturalgasenginesrequirefuelthatisclean,dryandattheacceptablepressureforengineoperation.Filters fornaturalgasenginesarecriticaltosupplytheenginewiththecleananddryfuelandareappropriately sizedforthegaspressurerequiredforengineoperation.
Gasfuelfiltersarenolessimportantthanairfiltersindieselenginestoprotectgasenginesfromdirtand debris.Apropergasfuelfilterremovesimpuritiesthatcandamageinternalcomponentsoftheengine.
Formanygasengines,fuelfiltersareaprovisionofthedesignfortheapplication.Thesedevicesareincluded inthenormalmaintenanceoftheplant.Hence,Catdoesnotincludeastandardgasfuelfilterasapartofeach gasengine.However,gasfuelfiltersareavailablefromyourCatdealer.
Catnaturalgasfiltershavethefollowingcharacteristics:
•Speciallytreatedborosilicateglassmicrofibersthatactivelyrepeloilandwater
•Apositiveo-ringsealtoprevententryofdebrisandparticulatematterespeciallyinhighsootoperating conditionsthattendtoplugnormalfilters
•Chemicalresistantendcapsbuilttowithstandchallengingoperatingenvironments
Note:Useagasfuelfilterthatisdesignedtocaptureaminimumof99percentoftheparticlesthatare1 micronindiameter.

Thepurposeofacabinairfilteristocleantheaircomingintothecab.Therearetypicallytwocabinair filters,afreshairfilterandarecirculationfilter.Thefreshairfiltercleanstheoutsideairpriortoenteringthe cab.Therecirculationfiltercleanstheairthatisinsidethecab.Cabinairfiltershelptoprotectthecab heatingandcoolingsystemfromdirtanddebris.Cabinairfiltersalsohelpwithoperatorwell-beingby providingcleanairwithinthecab.Thecabinairfiltershelptocreateacomfortableworkingenvironmentfor theoperator.
Note:Cabinairfiltersarenotforuseinfilteringhazardousmaterials.
Cabinairfiltersaredesignedspecificallyfortheapplicationinordertosupplytheproperairflowtothecab. ConsultyourCatdealerforthespecificcabinairfilterthatisdesignedforyourmachine.Donotsubstitute anyothercabinairfilter.

Cabinairfiltersareselectedbasedontheairflowrequirementsofthecab.Thefollowingarethemain componentsfordesigningacabinairfilterfortheapplication.
CabAirFlow-Airflowneededforappropriatecabpressurization,aswellasheatingandcooling.Cabair flowistypicallyexpressedincubicfeetperminute(cfm),cubicmetersperminute(m3/min),orkilograms perhour(kg/hr).
InitialandFinalRestriction-Airrestrictionlimitneededtoensurecontinuousflowofappropriatevolume throughouttheservicelifeofthefilter.Initialrestrictionismeasuredwithacleanfilter.Finalrestrictionis measuredwithafullyloadeddirtyfilter.Restrictionistypicallyexpressedininchesofwater(inH2O)or kilopascals(kPa).

HighefficiencycabinairfiltersareavailableforsomeCatequipmentmodels.Highefficiencycabinair filtersarerecommendedforextremelydustyenvironments.Highefficiencycabinairfiltershaveahigher initialandoverallefficiencyforimprovedperformance.Highefficiencycabinairfiltershaveimproveddirt holdingcapacity,whichextendsfilterservicelife,dependingontheoperatingconditions.
ActivatedCarbon
ActivatedcarboncabinairfiltersareavailableforsomeCatequipmentmodels.Thesecabinairfiltersare recommendedinsituationswhereodorisaproblem.Activatedcarboncabinairfiltersabsorbodorsaswell ascapturingdust.Activatedcarboncabinairfiltersmustbereplacedregularlyformaximumodorreduction.
LowerRestriction
LowerrestrictioncabinairfiltersareavailableforsomeCatequipmentmodels.Lowerrestrictioncabinair filtersaretypicallyrecommendedinsituationswherethereispoorcabairflow.Lowerrestrictioncabinair filtersallowformoreairflowintothecab,buttypicallyhavealowerefficiency.
CabinAirFilterServicing
Thecapacityandrestrictionofcabinairfiltersarecarefullydesignedfortheoptimalcabairflowand cleanliness.Properserviceandmanagementofthecabinairfiltersprotectstheheatingandcoolingsystem fromdirtanddust,increasesfilterlife,improvesefficiency,andreducescostofservicing.Properserviceand managementofthecabinairfiltersalsocreatesacleanerandmorecomfortableworkingenvironmentforthe operator.
•Usecarewhenhandlinganewfilterelementduringservicing.Keepthefilterelementcleanandinthe appropriatepackaginguntilreadytoinstallthefilterintothehousing.Keepthefilterelementexposure toopenairtoaminimumtolimitintroductionofdirtorelementdamage.
•Inspectthenewfilterelementpriortoinstallationintothehousingtoensurethattheelementisfree fromanydamage.Ensurethatthefilterelementiswellseatedandsealedagainstthehousing.
•Donot"tap"afilterelement,suchasonahardsurface,toremovethedust.Hittingthefilterelement onasurfacetoremovethedustcandamagethefilterelement.Deeplyembeddeddirtcannotbe removedbytappingthefilterelement.Thisprocesswillalsoremovethedirtlayerthatincreasesthe filterelementefficiency.
•Alwayschangeairfilterelementsbasedontherecommendedserviceinterval,nottheappearanceof thefilter.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManualfortherecommendedmaintenanceintervals.
•Changingtheairfilterelementbasedontherecommendedserviceintervalsallowsforoptimalservice lifeandefficiency.Changingtheairfilterelementpriortothedesignedlifeincreasesservicetimeand costunnecessarily.Changinganairfilterelementlatemaycausedamagetothecabheatingand coolingsystemduetopotentialfailureofthefilterelement.
•Whenservicingtheairfilter,inspectthehousingandmatingcomponentsforapparentdamage. Replaceasneeded.
CabinAirPrecleaners
Thepurposeofthecabinairprecleaneristocleantheairbeforetheairreachesthefreshairfilter.This precleaningisaccomplishedbyusingamotorandfantospintheincomingairatveryhighspeedinsidethe
precleaner.Theheavyparticlesrideontheoutsideoftheprecleanerbodyandareejectedbacktotheoutside beforeeverreachingthefilter.
Cabinairprecleanersextendthelifeofthefreshairfilters.Customershavedemonstratedatypicalincrease infilterlifeof5to10timescomparedtosystemswithouttheprecleaner.Asaresult,theuseofcabinair precleanerreducesthecostassociatedwithfrequentaircleanerchangesandreducesthemaintenancetime forfilterreplacement.
Additionally,cabinairprecleanersresultinpositive(higher)andmoreconsistentcabinairpressure.This positivecabinairpressurekeepsthecleanairinsidethecabwhilekeepingthedirtyairoutside.Without positivecabinairpressure,dirtyoutsideaircanenterthecabthroughanysmallopeningsincludingbroken doorseals,windowcracks,skipwelds,andcabpenetrations(harnesses,hydrauliclines,hoses).Withouta precleaner,thecabpressureishigheratthefastestfanspeedsettingandloweratthelowestfanspeedsetting. Withaprecleanerinstalled,thecabpressureremainshighnomatterwhatfanspeedisselected.
CabPressureMonitor
Cabpressureisveryimportanttomaintainingaclean,healthyworkingenvironmentinsidethecab.Dueto thisimportance,measuringcabinairinrealtimeandtomonitoringcabinairisuseful.Thismonitoring allowstheoperatortoreceivefeedbackifadoororwindowisleftopenorifafilterhasbecomepluggedwith dirt.Caterpillarhasreleasedacabinpressuremonitorfordealerinstallationwithadigitalreadout, programmablepressuresetpoint,andaudiblealarm.ConsultyourCatdealerformoreinformationandrefer toyourOperationandMaintenanceManualformoreinformation.

•Alwaysstorethefilterelementssealedandinabox.Donotallowafilterelementtobeexposedtodirt, water,orothercontaminantsduringstorage.
•Storefiltersintheoriginalpackages,indoorsanddonotexposethefilterstoextremetemperatures. Thesestorageconditionspreservethefiltercleanlinessandmaintaintheintegrityofvariousfilter componentsincludingnon-metalcomponentssuchasseals.Thisstorageensuresthatthefilterswill performasdesignedandofferoptimalprotectionofthecomponents.Furthermore,whenfollowing theserecommendations,thelifeofthefiltersontheshelfcanbeupto5years.Theshelflifecanbe increasedifalloftheaboveconditionsaremetandthestoragefacilityhasaconsistentclimate controlledenvironment,whichincludesasteadytemperature(nolargefluctuationsintemperature)and low/controlledhumidity.Iftheclimatecontrolrequirementsaremet,theshelflifecanbeextendedup to8years.
•Exercisecarewhenremovingthefilterelementfromtheboxandfromthebagsothattheelementis notexposedtoanycontamination.
CleaningPrimaryAirFilterElements
Caterpillardoesnotrecommendthecleaningofairfilterelementssincethereisnotarelativelyfeasibleand reliablemethodofinspectingairfilterelementsfordamage.Adamagedairfilterelementcanallowdirtto passthrough,whichresultsinreducedefficiency.
Cleaningtheairfilterelementwillresultinaprogressivereductionfromtheoriginalfiltercapacityeachtime thefilteriscleaned.However,iftheownerinsistsoncleaningprimaryairfilterelementstoextendfilterlife, thefollowinginstructionsmayhelptominimizetherisks.
Donotcleantheairfilterelementsbybumpingortappingastheseactionscancausedamage.Donotuseair filterelementswithdamagedpleats,gaskets,orseals.Discarddamagedairfilterelements.
Donotusesolventsorwatertowashtheairfilterelement.
Whenattemptingtocleantheprimaryairfilterelement,useamaximumgaugedairpressureof207kPa(30 psi)ataminimumdistanceof75mm(3inch)foratleast3minutes.Donotaimthehigh-pressureairstream directlyatthefiltermedia,butrathersotheairflowsalongthelengthofthefiltermediasurface.Take extremecareduringthisproceduretohelppreventdamagetothefilterelementandtopreventforcingdirt furtherintothepleats.Thisproceduremaybeusedforamaximumofthreecleaningsbeforefilterelement replacement.
Theengineairfiltersecondary(safety)elementshouldneverbecleanedandshouldbereplacedeverythird primaryairfilterelementchange,orasrequired.
Neverattempttoreplaceafilterelementwhiletheengineisrunning.

Thepurposeofanengineairfilter,whichwillbereferredtoasanairfilterinthissection,istocleantheair incomingintotheengine,typicallycalledintakeair.Intheengine,intakeairmixeswithfuelthatisinjected intothecombustionchamberatpreciseratios.Thishighlydesignedcombustionprocessensuresthatthe engineoperatesasintendedandperdesign.
Thecleanlinessoftheintakeairiscriticaltotheperformanceoftheengine.Dirtyandcontaminatedintake aircausesalowerqualitycombustionprocess,whichresultsinaroughrunningengineandlowerpower. Also,dirtyintakeairintroducesabrasivedirtintoenginecomponentsthataremovingathighspeedsuchas pistons,rings,andbearings.Theabrasivedirtscratchesthesurfacesofmovingcomponentsandcauses gougingandroughness.Theroughandscratchedsurfacesleadtolowerperformance,higheroil consumption,reducedlifeoftheengine,downtime,alongwithothernegativeeffectsandhigher maintenancecost.
Airfiltersaredesignedspecificallyforthemachineorengineapplicationinordertosupplytheproperair flowforthecombustionprocess.Largeenginesmayrequiremultipleairfilterstosupplytheneededvolume ofcleanair.RefertoyourmachineOperationandMaintenanceManualforthespecificairfilterthatis designedforyourmachine.

Precleaner
Exampleofaplenumthatconnectstheprecleanertothefilter
Aprecleanercanbeseparateorintegratedintotheaircleaner.Theprecleanerisdesignedtocleantheintake airbeforetheairflowsthroughtheprimaryfilterelement.Precleanersextendthelifeofprimaryfilter elementsbyremovinglargeparticlesofdustanddirtbeforetheparticlereachtheprimaryfilterelement. Therearetwomaintypesofprecleaners,turbineandseparatortube.Useofabuilt-industdischargeportin theprecleanerhousingisrecommendedinordertolimitdirtaccumulationandmaintenance.
Turbineprecleanersusearotatingimpellertoseparateprimarilylargeparticlesfromtheairstream.The rotatingimpellerforcesmostofthelargerparticlestowardstheouteredgeofasingleinletairstream.The particlesarethendischargedthroughadiverterfeaturebuiltintotheedgeofthehousing.Turbineprecleaners donottypicallyrequirescavenge,althoughtheturbineperformancecanbeenhancedifscavengecanbe used.
Separatortubeprecleanersusespeciallydesignedtubestoseparatelargeandsmallparticlesfromthe airstream.Separatortubeprecleanersuseseveralsmallerfixedvanecyclonictubestoforcethedirtparticles outofthedividedairstreamsbycentrifugalmotion.Thedirtparticlesarethendischargedthroughgravityfed orvacuumdrivenscavengeport.

Airfilterhousingscanbemetallic,non-metallic,oracombination.Housingscanhavevariousshapesand sizes.Airfilterhousingsaredesignedtobevibration,corrosion,chemical,andimpactresistant.Filter housingsshouldbedesignedtofitthemachineorengineapplication.Thefilterelementisdesignedtofit preciselyintothehousingtoensureagoodsealsothatonlycleanairenterstheengine.
PrimaryFilterElement
Theprimaryfilterelementisdesignedtoremovethedirtfromtheairstreambeforeenteringtheengine.The primaryfilterelementmediamaybesynthetic,cellulose,oracombination.Filtermediamayalsocontain resinsandbinders.Themediacouldbeofvariousdesignsincludingbutnotlimitedtopleatedandfluted.A high-qualityfiltermediaallowshighseparationefficiencyandextendedservicelife.Thefilterelementmay bedesignedtoofferalargesurfaceareaforadditionaldirtholdingcapacity.RefertotheOperationand MaintenanceManualfortherecommendedmaintenanceintervals.

SecondaryFilterElement
Thesecondaryfilterelementisdesignedtopreventdirtfromenteringtheengineduringprimaryfilter elementserviceorasabackupiftheprimaryelementfails.Forthisreasonthesecondaryfilterelementmay alsobecalledasafetyfilter.Thesefilterelementsarenotusedineverydesignbutarehighlyrecommended. SealingofMediaandHousing
Filterelementsshouldhaveappropriatesealingbetweenthemediaandthehousing.Thefilterelementis designedtofitpreciselyintothehousingtoensureagoodsealsothatonlycleanairenterstheengine. Sealingcanberadialoraxial.
•Radialsealedelementsaredesignedtosealontheinsideand/oroutsidediameterofthefilterelement astheelementcontactsthehousing.Thistypeofsealallowsformoreflexibilityduringtheinstallation process,whilestillprovidingarobustseal.Mostcurrentaircleanerdesignsuseradialsealing technology.
•Axialsealedelementsaredesignedtosealonlyontheendofthefilterelementasthefiltercontactsthe housing.Thistypeofsealhaslessflexibilityduringtheinstallationprocess,sincethesealrequiresa nearperfectpositioninthehousingtoprovideanadequateseal.Forthisreason,radialsealingis preferred.
DustDischarge/ScavengePort
Thedustdischargeportisusedtoprovideanoutletforthedirtremovedbytheprecleanerortwostageair cleaner.Dustdischargecanbeassistedbyadischargevalveorbytheuseofascavengesystem.Withoutthis port,thedirtmaybuildupinthecleanerandcloggingmayoccur.
DustDischargeValve
Thedustdischargevalveusesgravityandpressuretohelpeliminatethedirtfromthecleaner.Typically,this valvestayscloseduntiltheengineisturnedofforpulsationstriggerthevalvetoopen.Thevalvecanbe attacheddirectlytothedustdischargeportortoanextensiontube.Thelatterallowsgravitytoassistthe dischargeofdirt.
FilterServiceIndicator/Sensor
Filterserviceindicatorsallowthedeterminationofthepressuredropacrossthefilter.Asdustanddirt builduponthefilterelement,thepressureacrosstheelementincreases.Indicatorscanbeelectronicor mechanicalandmayuseremotelymounteddisplaysforoperatorconvenience.Filterelementsmustbe servicedwhentheelementsreachapre-designedpressuredrop.Indicatorsallowthedeterminationofthe pressuredropandhenceallowforservicingattherightinterval.Indicatorshelppreventoverservicingand highercost.Theindicatoralsohelppreventunderservicing,lossofperformanceandpotentialengine damage.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManualfortheindicatorrecommendedreadingorresetting ifneeded.
RainCap
Araincapprotectstheairintakefromrainandvariousformsofdebris.Ifneeded,theraincapmaybe integratedintotheprecleanerorcanbeaseparatecomponent.
EjectorCheckValve
Anejectorcheckvalvepreventsexhaustbackflowandprotectstheairfilterbyonlyallowingairtoflowin onedirection.

Fluidfiltersarecarefullydesignedfortheoptimalfluidflowandcleanlinessoftheengineormachine compartment.Properstorageandhandlingoffluidfiltersprotectsandensuresoptimalperformanceand protectsenginesormachinecompartmentsfromcontamination,increasesfilterlife,improvesefficiency,and reducescostofservicinganddowntime.
Thefollowingaretherecommendationsforappropriatestorageandhandlingoffilters:
•Storefiltersintheoriginalpackages,indoorsanddonotexposethefilterstoextremetemperatures. Thesestorageconditionspreservethefiltercleanlinessandmaintaintheintegrityofvariousfilter componentsincludingnon-metalcomponentssuchasseals.Thisstorageensuresthatthefilterswill performasdesignedandofferoptimalprotectionofthecomponents.Furthermore,whenfollowing theserecommendations,thelifeofthefiltersontheshelfcanbeupto5years.Theshelflifecanbe increasedifalloftheaboveconditionsaremetandthestoragefacilityhasaconsistentclimate controlledenvironment,whichincludesasteadytemperature(nolargefluctuationsintemperature)and low/controlledhumidity.Iftheclimatecontrolrequirementsaremet,theshelflifecanbeextendedup to8years.
•Minimizehandlingofthepackagedfiltersduringservicing.Keepthefiltercleanandintheappropriate packaginguntilreadytoinstallthefilter.Keepthefilterexposuretoopenairtoaminimumtolimit introductionofdirtorelementdamage.Usecarewhenhandlinganewfilterelementduringservicing.
•Spinonfiltersareprotectedbytheoutermetalcanister.Followingtherecommendationsgivenabove ensuresthatthefiltersarefreefromdamageanddirt.
•Cartridgefiltersarenotprotectedbyacanisterandhencemustbehandledwithcaretoensurethatthe mediaisnotdamagedorcontaminated.Holdthecartridgeunitfromtheendcapswhenremovingfrom thepackagingandquicklydropthecartridgeinthecanistertoavoidcontaminationordamage.Ensure thatthefilterelementiswellseatedandsealedagainstthehousing.
