Operation
Operatingtechniquesoutlinedinthismanualarebasic.Theyassistwithdevelopingtheskillsand techniquesrequiredtooperatetheenginemoreefficientlyandeconomically.Skillandtechniques developastheoperatorgainsknowledgeoftheengineanditscapabilities.
Theoperationsectionisareferenceforoperators.Photographsandillustrationsguidetheoperator throughproceduresofinspecting,starting,operating,andstoppingtheengine.Thissectionalso includesadiscussionofelectronicdiagnosticinformation.
Maintenance
Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoenginecare.Theillustrated,step-by-stepinstructionsare groupedbyservicehoursand/orcalendartimemaintenanceintervals.Itemsinthemaintenance schedulearereferencedtodetailedinstructionsthatfollow.
Useservicehourstodetermineintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,annually,etc)maybeused insteadofservicemeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenientschedulesandapproximatethe indicatedservicemeterreading.
Performedtherecommendedserviceattheservicehourinterval.Theactualoperatingenvironmentof theenginealsogovernsthemaintenanceschedule.Therefore,undersevere,dusty,wet,orfreezing coldoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubrication,andmaintenancethanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceschedulemaybenecessary.
Themaintenancescheduleitemsareorganizedforapreventivemaintenancemanagementprogram.If thepreventivemaintenanceprogramisfollowed,aperiodictune-upisnotrequired.The implementationofapreventivemaintenancemanagementprogramshouldminimizeoperatingcosts throughcostavoidancesresultingfromreductionsinunscheduleddowntimeandfailures.
MaintenanceIntervals
Performmaintenanceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Eachleveland/orindividual itemsineachlevelshouldbeshiftedaheadorbackdependinguponyourspecificmaintenance practices,operation,andapplication.Werecommendthatthemaintenanceschedulesbereproduced anddisplayedneartheengineasaconvenientreminder.Wealsorecommendthatamaintenance recordbemaintainedaspartoftheengine'spermanentrecord.

Coolant

Checkthatthecoolantlevelaftertheenginehasstoppedandtheenginehasbeenallowedtocool.

Ensurethatallgroundsaresecureandfreeofcorrosion.
Theenginealternatormustbegroundedtothenegative"-"batteryterminalwithawirethatis adequatetocarrythefullchargingcurrentofthealternator.
Forthestartingmotor,donotattachthebatterynegativeterminaltotheengineblock.
Groundtheengineblockwithagroundstrapthatisfurnishedbythecustomer.Connectthisground straptothegroundplane.
Useaseparategroundstraptogroundthebatterynegativeterminalforthecontrolsystemtothe groundplane.
Ifrubbercouplingsconnectthesteelpipingofthecoolingsystemandtheradiator,thepipingandthe radiatorcanbeelectricallyisolated.Ensurethatthepipingandtheradiatorarecontinuouslygrounded totheengine.Usegroundstrapsthatbypasstherubbercouplings.

Donotexposetheenginetoanyflame.
Exhaustshields(ifequipped)protecthotexhaustcomponentsfromoilorfuelsprayinaline,ahose, orasealfailure.Exhaustshieldsmustbeinstalledcorrectly.
Donotweldonlinesortanksthatcontainflammablefluids.Donotflamecutlinesthatcontain flammablefluid.Cleananysuchlinesthoroughlywithanonflammablesolventpriortoweldingor flamecutting.
Wiringmustbekeptingoodcondition.Ensurethatallelectricalwiresareproperlyroutedand securelyattached.Checkallelectricalwiresdaily.Repairanywiresthatarelooseorfrayedbefore youoperatetheengine.Cleanallelectricalconnectionsandtightenallelectricalconnections.
Eliminateallwiringthatisunattachedorunnecessary.Donotuseanywiresorcablesthataresmaller thantherecommendedgauge.Donotbypassanyfusesand/orcircuitbreakers.
Arcingorsparkingcouldcauseafire.Secureconnections,recommendedwiring,andproperly maintainedbatterycableswillhelptopreventarcingorsparking.
Inspectalllinesandhosesforwearorfordeterioration.Properlyrouteallhoses.Thelinesandhoses musthaveadequatesupportandsecureclamps.Tightenallconnectionstotherecommendedtorque. Leakscancausefires.
Properlyinstallalloilfiltersandfuelfilters.Thefilterhousingsmustbetightenedtotheproper torque.

•Donotattemptanyrepairsthatarenotunderstood.Usethepropertools.Replaceany equipmentthatisdamagedorrepairtheequipment.
•Starttheenginewiththeoperatorcontrols.Nevershortacrossthestartingmotorterminalsor thebatteries.Thismethodofstartingtheenginecouldbypasstheengineneutralstartsystem and/ortheelectricalsystemcouldbedamaged.

PressurizedAirandWater
Pressurizedairand/orwatercancausedebrisand/orhotwatertobeblownoutwhichcouldresultin personalinjury.
Whenpressurizedairand/orpressurizedwaterisusedforcleaning,wearprotectiveclothing, protectiveshoes,andeyeprotection.Eyeprotectionincludesgogglesoraprotectivefaceshield.
