MaintenanceIntervalSchedule
Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, weekly,monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemore convenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading. Recommendedserviceshouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

CoolingSystemSpecifications
GeneralCoolantInformation
Manyenginefailurescouldbeavoidedwithpropercoolingsystemmaintenance.Coolingsystem maintenanceisasimportantasfuelandlubricatingsystemmaintenance.Coolantqualityisas importantasthequalityoffuelandlubricatingoil.
Thethreemainfunctionsthatcoolantservesare:
*Adequateheattransferandanti-boilprotection
*Cavitationerosionandcorrosionprotection
*Freezeprotection
Coolantisnormallycomposedofthreeelements:
*Water
*Additives
*Glycol
Water
Distilledordeionizedwaterisrecommendedforuseincoolingsystems.DONOTusehardwater, tapwater,orsaltsoftenedtapwaterinenginecoolingsystems.Ifdistilledordeionizedwateris NOTavailable,usewaterthatmeetstheminimumacceptablerequirements.
NOTICE
Waterthatdoesnotmeettheminimumacceptablelimitswillreduce engineservicelifewhenusedincoolingsystems.
Ifyouarenotsureofthecontentofthewater,contactyourCaterpillardealer,yourlocalwater department,youragriculturalagent,oranindependentlaboratorytoanalyzethewater.
Additives
Additivesmustbeincludedinallcoolantmixtures.Additiveshelppreventtheformationofrust, scale,andmineraldeposits.Additivesprotectmetalsfromcorrosion,preventlinercavitation,and containanti-foamingagents.Additivesaredepletedduringengineoperationandneedtobe replenished.Additivescanbereplenishedthroughtheadditionofsupplementalcoolantadditives (usedwithconventionalcoolants)orExtender(usedwithCaterpillarExtendedLifeCoolant).
Nitritesornitriteandmolybdateadditivesprotectthecylinderlinerfromcavitationcorrosion. Nitritesaredepleted,creatingtheneedforadditivesorExtender.AdditivesandExtenderalso containotherinhibitorsthatcanbedepletedfromcoolingsystems.
Aninsufficientadditiveconcentrationdoesnotprovideadequateprotectionforcoolingsystems. Anexcessiveadditiveconcentrationcancauseadditivestodropoutofthesolution,depositinside thecoolingsystem,orformagelintheradiator.Depositscanbeintheformofsludgeandscale whichaccumulateonhotenginesurfaces.Depositsreducecoolingsystemeffectiveness,orcause waterpumpleaks.
Tomaintainconventionalcoolingsystemprotection,itisnecessarytomonitorsupplemental coolantadditiveconcentration.Maintaintheproperadditivelevelsinthecoolingsystem.
Glycol
Enginecoolantglycolisnormallyeitherethyleneorpropylene.Glycolraisestheboilingpointof watertohelppreventboil-over,providesfreezeprotection,helpspreventwaterpumpcavitation, andreducescylinderlinerpitting.
NOTICE
Forambienttemperaturesrequiringlowerfreezeprotection(higher than50percentglycol),useethyleneglycol.DONOTusepropylene glycol.
Properfreeze/boilprotectionrequirestheproperratioofglycolandacceptablewater.Usethe followingchartstodetermineglycolconcentrationstomixwithacceptablewater.
Usethe1U-7298CoolantTester(°C)orthe1U-7297CoolantTester(°F)tocheckthecoolant solutionperiodicallytoensureadequatefreeze/boilprotection.Therefractometersgiveimmediate, accuratereadingsandcanbeusedwithethyleneorpropyleneglycol.
NOTE:Formoredetailedspecifications,referto:KnowYourCoolingSystem,SEBD0518,and CoolantandYourEngine,SEBD0970,orcontactyourCaterpillardealer.
CoolantRecommendations
*Preferred-Caterpillar'sExtendedLifeCoolant(ELC).
*Recommended-Caterpillar'sDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant(DEAC).
*Acceptable-AnylowsilicatecoolantthatmeetsTruckMaintenanceCouncil(TMC) RecommendedPractice(RP),329,TMCRP330,orASTMD4985requirementswhenused withsupplementalcoolantadditives.
*Permitted-Amixtureofacceptablewaterandasupplementalcoolantadditive,where freezeprotectionisnotnecessary.
*Unacceptable-AnyhighsilicatecoolantthatisclassifiedasmeetingASTMD3306.
NOTICE
Mostcommercialenginecoolant/antifreezesareformulatedfor gasolineengineapplicationsandhavehighsilicatecontent.High silicatesareconducivetocylinderlinercavitationandcorrosion. CaterpillarDOESNOTrecommendhighsilicatecoolant/antifreezes.
NOTE:Duetoindividualengineapplications,enginecoolingsystemmaintenancepracticesmay needperiodicevaluation.
NOTICE
Neveroperatewithoutthermostatsinthecoolingsystem.Thermostats maintaintheenginecoolantattheproperoperatingtemperature. Coolingsystemproblemscanarisewithoutthermostats.
NOTICE
Neveraddcoolanttoanoverheatedengine.Allowtheenginetocool first.Donotaddcoolanttooquickly.Fillingthecoolingsystematover 19L(5U.S.gal)perminutecancreateairpocketsinthecooling system.Enginedamagecanresult.
Whenfillingoraddingcoolanttothesystem,premixthecoolantsolutionpriortopouringitinto thecoolingsystem.Pure,undilutedglycolwillfreezeat-23°C(-10°F).Useacoolantsolutionthat isinarangewhichwillprovideprotectiontothelowestexpectedoutside(ambient)temperature andprovidetherequiredboil-overprotection.
Caterpillar'sExtendedLifeCoolant
Caterpillar'sExtendedLifeCoolantanti-corrosionpackageisdifferentfromtheconventional antifreezesthathavebeenused.ExtendedLifeCoolantisanethyleneglycol-based coolant/antifreezecontainingorganiccorrosioninhibitorsandanti-foamagentswithfewernitrites thanconventionalcoolants.
ExtendedLifeCoolantwasspecificallydesignedforuseindieselenginecoolingsystemsand naturalgasenginecoolingsystems.
ExtendedLifeCoolantextendscoolantlifeto6000servicehoursorfouryears,whichevercomes first.OneadditionofCaterpillar'sExtenderisrequiredtomaintainExtendedLifeCoolant.

*Twicethecoolantlife
*Considerablylessmaintenance

ExtendedLifeCoolantisavailableasa50percentExtendedLifeCoolantand50percent deionizedwatersolutionorinconcentrate.Seethetableforquantitiesthatareavailable.
NOTE:A50percentExtendedLifeCoolantand50percentdeionizedwatersolutionprovides freezeprotectionto-37°C(-34°F)andanti-boilprotectionto108°C(226°F).DONOTuse ExtendedLifeCoolantatreducedconcentrations(lessthan50percent),astheadditiveswouldbe reducedalongwiththeantifreeze.ExtendedLifeCoolantconcentrateisavailabletolowerthe coolantfreezepointwhenusedinarcticconditions.ExtendedLifeCoolantconcentrationcanbe increasedto60percentfor-52°C(-62°F)freezeprotection.
Extender
Extendershouldbeaddedtothecoolingsystematthe3000servicehoursortwoyears,whichever comesfirst.SeethetabletodeterminetherecommendedamountofExtendertoaddtoExtended LifeCoolant.
UseonlyCaterpillarproductsorcommercialproductsthathave passedCaterpillar'sEC-1specificationforpremixedorconcentrated coolants.
UseonlyCaterpillarExtenderwithExtendedLifeCoolant.
MixingExtendedLifeCoolantwithotherproductsreducesthe ExtendedLifeCoolantservicelife.Failuretofollowthe recommendationsincludedinthissectioncanreducecoolingsystem componentlife.
Inordertomaintainthecorrectbalanceofantifreezeandadditives,careshouldbetakento maintaintheproperExtendedLifeCoolantconcentration.Reducingtheamountofantifreeze lowerstoproportionofadditive,thusloweringthecoolant'sabilitytoprotectthecoolingsystem frompitting,cavitation,erosion,anddeposits.
ProperExtendedLifeCoolantAdditions
NOTE:DONOTaddExtendedLifeCoolantConcentrateasamakeupsolutionforroutine coolingsystemtop-off.AddingconcentratedExtendedLifeCoolantincreasestheconcentrationof glycolinthecoolingsystem.
Duringnormalmaintenance,useapremixedsolutionofapprovedwaterandExtendedLife Coolantasatop-offtothecoolingsystemtobringthecoolanttotheproperlevel.UseExtended LifeCoolantoracoolantthatmeetsCaterpillar'sEC-1specification.IfacoolantthatmeetsEC-1 isnotavailable,usedistilledorde-ionizedwaterasamake-up.Checktheglycollevelofthe coolingsystemwiththe1U-7298CoolantTester(°C)orthe1U-7297CoolantTester(°F).Use ExtendedLifeCoolantConcentratetorestoretheproperglycolconcentrationbeforetheengineis exposedtofreezingtemperatures.
NOTICE
Donotuseconventionalcoolanttotopoffacoolingsystemusing ExtendedLifeCoolant.
Donotusesupplementalcoolantadditivesotherthanextenderin coolingsystemsfilledwithExtendedLifeCoolant.
IfacoolingsystemusingExtendedLifeCoolanthasbeento0pedoffwithasmallamountof conventionalcoolantorifasupplementalcoolantadditivewasaddedtothesystembymistake,the systemwillnotbeharmed.
Shouldthecoolingsystembecomecontaminatedwithconventionalcoolantorsupplemental coolantadditiveexceeding10percentofthecoolingsystem'stotalcapacity,performoneofthe followingactions:
*DrainthecoolingsystemandrefillthecoolingsystemwithExtendedLifeCoolant,or
*Maintainthecoolingsystemasifthecoolingsystemisfilledwithconventionalcoolant.
ExtendedLifeCoolantCoolingSystemCleaning
NOTE:NocleaningagentsaretobeusedwhenacoolingsystemusingExtendedLifeCoolantis drained,flushed,andrefilled.
Cleanwateristheonlysystemcleaning/flushingagentrequiredwhenExtendedLifeCoolantis drainedfromthecoolingsystem.
ExtendedLifeCoolantcanberecycled.Thedrainedcoolantmixturecanbe"distilled"toseparate theethyleneglycolandwaterforreuse.ContactyourCaterpillardealerformoreinformation.
Afterdrainingandrefillingthecoolingsystem,operatetheenginewiththeradiatorfillercap removeduntilthecoolantreachesnormaloperatingtemperatureandthecoolantlevelstabilizes. Addcoolantmixtureasnecessarytofillthesystemtotheproperlevel.
ConvertingaCoolingSystemfromConventionalCoolanttoExtendedLifeCoolant
NOTE:WhenthecoolantischangedfromconventionalcoolanttoExtendedLifeCoolant,a Caterpillarcleanershouldbeused.AftertheuseofCaterpillarcoolingsystemcleaners,thesystem MUSTbethoroughlyflushedwithcleanwater.
ToconvertthecoolingsystemfromconventionalcoolanttoExtendedLifeCoolant,performthe followingprocedure:
1.Drainthecoolant.
2.Flushthesystemwithcleanwatertoremoveanydebris.
3.UseaCaterpillarcleanertocleanthesystem.Followtheinstructionsonthelabel.Caterpillar cleanerisavailablefromyourCaterpillardealer.
4.Drainthecleaner.Flushthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.
5.Fillthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.Operatetheengineuntilthecoolingsystem temperatureis49to66°C(120to150°F).
6.Drainandflushthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.
7.RepeatStep5andStep6.
8.FillthecoolingsystemwithExtendedLifeCoolant.
9.AttachalabeltothecoolingsystemtoindicatethesystemhasbeenconvertedtouseExtended LifeCoolant.
ConventionalAntifreeze/Coolant
Recommended-Caterpillar'sDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant
NOTE:ThefollowinginformationandrecommendationsareforCaterpillar'sDieselEngine Antifreeze/Coolantonly.
Caterpillar'sDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantwasspecificallydesignedfordieselenginecooling systemsandnaturalgasenginecoolingsystems.DieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantisanalkaline type,ethyleneglycol-basedformulacontaininginorganiccorrosioninhibitorsandanti-foam agents.DieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantwasformulatedwiththecorrectadditivelevelsto protectmetalpartsindieselengines.DieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantwillfurnishadequate corrosionprotection,anti-foamprotection,andcylinderliner/blockpittingprotection.Usea30
percentDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantand70percentacceptablewater/supplementalcoolant additivesolution.
MajoradvantagesofDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant:
*Minimalsilicatecontent-Highsilicatecoolants,usedwithsupplementalcoolant additives,cancauseabuild-upofsolidsovertime.Build-upofsolidscancauseplugging, lossofheattransfer,andwaterpumpsealdamage.DieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant significantlyreducessolidresiduebuild-upthatcausesinhibitordropoutandwaterpump sealdamage.
*Noneedtoaddsupplementalcoolantadditiveoninitialfill-Supplementalcoolant additivemustbeaddedwithothercommerciallyavailablecoolants.
DieselEngineAntifreeze/CoolantisavailablefromyourCaterpillardealerinthefollowing quantities:
ProperAntifreezeConcentrations
UsethetabletodetermineconcentrationsofDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolanttomixwith acceptablewaterandsupplementalcoolantadditive.
AcceptableAntifreeze/Coolant
AnylowsilicatecoolantthatmeetsTruckMaintenanceCouncil(TMC)RecommendedPractice (RP)329,TMCRP330,orASTMD4985requirementswhenusedwithsupplementalcoolant additivesisacceptable.
Caterpillarrecommendsaminimumof30percentglycolto70percentwater/supplementalcoolant additiveforpropercorrosionprotection.AllCaterpillarengineswithair-to-airaftercooling (ATAAC)requireaminimumconcentrationof30percentglycoltopreventwaterpump cavitation.
While30percentglycolistheminimumacceptablevolume,Caterpillarprefersa50percentglycol and50percentwater/supplementalcoolantadditivemixtureforoptimumperformance.
WhenusingDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant,nosupplementalcoolantadditiveisnecessaryon initialfillbecausesupplementalcoolantadditiveisintheDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant. SupplementalcoolantadditivemustbeaddedwithcommercialcoolantsmeetingASTMD4985at initialfill.SupplementalcoolantadditivemustbereplenishedwithbothCaterpillarDieselEngine Antifreeze/Coolantandothercommercialcoolantsatregularserviceintervals.Refertothechart forquantitiesofCaterpillarLiquidSCAtomixwithASTMD4985commercialcoolantsatinitial fill.
SupplementalCoolantAdditive
Supplementalcoolingsystemadditivecontainsalkali.Toprevent personalinjury,donotdrink,avoidcontactwiththeskinandeyes.
NOTICE
ThecoolingsystemMUSTcontainsupplementalcoolantadditivefor properengineprotection,regardlessofantifreezeconcentration.
NOTICE
DONOTmixCaterpillar'ssupplementalcoolantadditiveorcoolant additiveelementswithanothermanufacturer'sproducts.Selecta coolingsystemtreatmentanduseitexclusively.
Supplementalcoolantadditiveisnecessaryforproperconventionalcoolantmaintenance.Most coolantsolutionsDONOTcontainsufficientsupplementalcoolantadditivefordieselengine application.

Donotexceedtherecommendedsixpercentsupplementalcoolant additiveconcentration.Excessivesupplementalcoolantadditive concentrationcanformdepositsonthehighertemperaturesurfacesof thecoolingsystem,reducingtheengine'sheattransfercharacteristics. Reducedheattransfercouldcausecrackingofthecylinderheadand otherhightemperaturecomponents.Excessivesupplementalcoolant additiveconcentrationcouldalsoresultinradiatortubeblockage, overheating,and/oracceleratedwaterpumpsealwear.Neveruseboth liquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveandthespin-onelement(if equipped)atthesametime.Theuseofthoseadditivestogethercould resultinsupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationexceedingthe recommendedsixpercentmaximum.
Useliquidsupplementalcoolantadditiveorasupplementalcoolantadditiveelement(ifequipped) tomaintainathreetosixpercentsupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationinthecoolant.
NOTE:Caterpillartestkitscheckforconcentrationofnitritesinthecoolantsolution.Some manufacturers'supplementalcoolantadditivearephosphatebased.Caterpillartestkitsprovide inaccurateresultswithphosphatebasedsupplementalcoolantadditive.Commercialsupplemental coolantadditiveproductsmustcontainsilicatesandaminimumof70gramsper3.8L(1U.S.gal) (1200ppm)nitrites.Ifanothermanufacturer'ssupplementalcoolantadditiveisused,usethat manufacturer'stestkit.Followthemanufacturer'srecommendationsforcoolingsystemtreatment andtestevaluation.
Testthecoolantperiodicallytomonitorsupplementalcoolantadditivelevels.Usethe4C-9301 TestKittocheckforCaterpillarsupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentration.Thekitalso providescoolingsystemmaintenancerecommendations.Thiskitisspecificallyforusewith Caterpillarsupplementalcoolantadditive's.The8T-5296TestKitcanalsotocheckforCaterpillar supplementalcoolantadditiveconcentration.

Acoolantmixtureofwaterandsupplementalcoolantadditivewillcool andprovidesomeprotectiontoenginecomponents,butitwillNOT providenormalengineservicelife.
NOTICE
Caterpillar'srecommendationforpropercoolantisaminimum concentrationof30percentglycoland70percentacceptablewaterand supplementalcoolantadditive(threepercentofthetotalmixture).This recommendationwillmaintaincoolingsystemcorrosionprotection.
Inapplicationswherefreezeprotectionisnotrequired,orwhereantifreezeisnotavailable,a coolantmixtureofacceptablewaterandsupplementalcoolantadditivecanbeused.A water/supplementalcoolantadditivesystemshouldmaintainasixtoeightpercentsupplemental coolantadditiveconcentration.DONOTexceedeightpercentmaximumsupplementalcoolant additiveconcentration.Supplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationlevelsmustbemonitored.
The8T-5296TestKitcanbeusedtoevaluatethesupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationin water/supplementalcoolantadditivecoolant,withthefollowingmodificationstolabelinstruction Step3andStep5.
STEP3.-Addtapwatertothevialuptothe20mlmark.
STEP5.-Withthedefinedprocedure,thesixtoeightpercentconcentrationwillyielda20to27 droprange.Fewerdropsindicatealowconcentrationofsupplementalcoolantadditiveandmore dropsindicateahighconcentration.Adjusttheconcentrationappropriately.
Ifthesupplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationisgreaterthanthemaximumofeightpercent: drainsomeofthecoolant,refillthesystemwithacceptablewater,andretesttheconcentration level.
ConventionalCoolingSystemMaintenance
Checktheantifreezesolutionfrequentlyincoldweathertoensureadequatefreezeprotection.Test theconcentrationorsubmitacoolantsampletoyourCaterpillardealerinordertomonitorthe supplementalcoolantadditiveconcentrationinyourengine'scoolantmixtureevery250service hoursormonthly,whichevercomesfirst.Supplementalcoolantadditiveoramaintenanceadditive element(ifequipped)maybeneededevery250servicehoursormonthly,whichevercomefirst.
Topreventover-inhibitingtheengine'scoolingsystem,donotuseboth supplementalcoolantadditiveliquidandasupplementalcoolant additiveelement(ifequipped)atthesametime.Useonemethod exclusively.
WhenusingDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantandsupplementalcoolantadditive,thecooling systemshouldbedrained,cleaned,flushed,andfilledwithnewcoolantevery3000servicehours oreverytwoyears,whichevercomefirst.RefertothetopicMaintenanceIntervalsinthismanual.
WhenNOTusingCaterpillarDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantandsupplementalcoolant additive,thedrain/flushproceduremustbeperformedatleasteveryyear.
Afteryoudrainandyourefillthecoolingsystem,operatetheenginewiththeradiatorfillercap removeduntilthecoolantreachesnormaloperatingtemperatureandthecoolantlevelstabilizes. Addcoolantmixtureasnecessarytofillthesystemtotheproperlevel.
CoolingSystemCleaning
Draining,cleaning,andflushingthecoolingsystemremovessmallparticles,undesirable chemicals,scale,andotherdepositformations.Notperformingmaintenanceonthecoolingsystem caneventuallycauseengineoverheatingproblemsthatcouldresultinseveredamagetoengine andcomponents.
Cleanthecoolingsystemifthesystembecomescontaminated,iftheengineoverheats,orif foamingisobserved.
Caterpillar'sFastActingCoolingSystemCleanerisdesignedtocleanthesystemofharmfulscale andcorrosion.Thecleanerdissolvesmineralscale,corrosionproducts,lightoilcontamination, andsludge.
FastActingCoolingSystemCleanerisavailablefromyourCaterpillardealerinthequantities listed.Followtheproductlabeldirectionsforproperuse.

*Inspectandremoveanytrashbuild-upintheenginecompartment.
*Inspectthecoolingsystemforleaks,faultyhoses,andtrashbuild-up.Correctanyleaks andremoveanytrashfromtheradiator.

*Inspectandrepairanyhydraulicsystemleaks.Inspecthoses,seals,andaroundflanges.

*Besurecoversandguardsarefirmlyinplace.Inspectfordamageorforlooseandmissing bolts.
