SteeringClutch/BrakeControl
Therearetwosteeringclutch/brakecontrollevers.Theleverontheoperator'sleft,controlstheleft steeringclutchandbrake.Theleverontherightcontrolstherightsteeringclutchandbrake.
LeftSteeringClutch/BrakeLever(1.)-Pulltheleftlever(1)backtosteerthemachinetothe left.Therateofsteeringiscontrolledbyhowfartheleverispulledback.Whenaslightlever pressureisfeltwhilepullingitback,theleverwillbeenteringthebrakingposition.Pullthelever allthewaybacktobrakethelefttrack,forapivotturn.Pullingonlytheleftleverallthewayback willNOTSTOPthemachine.
RightSteeringClutch/BrakeLever(2.)-Pulllever(2)tosteerthemachinetotheright.Lever (2)controlstherighttrackthesameaslever(1)controlsthelefttrack.
Transmission/ParkingBrakeLever
Thisleverengagestheparkingbrakeandlocksthetransmissioninneutral.Themachineshould notmovewhenengaged.
Transmission/ParkingBrakeUnlocked(1.)-Pulltheleveruptoreleasetheparkingbrake.
Locked(2.)-Pushtheleverdowntoengagetheparkingbrake.Thiswillalsolockthe transmissioninNEUTRAL.
1.Thelevercontrolsneutral,forward,reverseandthreespeedsforwardorreverse.Movethelever tothedesireddirectionandspeed.
BulldozerBlade
Float(1.)-PushtheleverallthewayforwardintodetentforbladeFLOAT.Inthisposition,the bladewillmoveupanddownfollowingthegroundcontour.
Theleverwillremaininthefloatposition(detent)untilmanuallypulledoutofdetentposition. TheleverwillthenreturntotheHOLDposition.
Lower(2.)-PushtheleverforwardfromHOLDtolowertheblade.Releasetheleveranditwill returntoHOLD.
Hold(3.)-Releasetheleverfromraiseorlower,andtheleverwillreturntoHOLD.Theblade movementwillstop.
Raise(4.)-Pulltheleverbacktoraisetheblade.ReleasetheleveranditwillreturntoHOLD.

1.ShankPinIn-Toengagetherippershankpin(detent),pulluponthetoggleswitchandmove ittowardtheoperator.
Pullthetoggleswitchupandmoveittothecenter(HOLD)positiontostoptherippershankpin movement.
2.ShankPinHold-Pulluponthetoggleswitchandmoveittothecenter(HOLD)position,and therippershankpinmovementwillstop.
3.ShankPinOut-Todisengagetherippershankpin(detent),pulluponthetoggleswitchand moveitawayfromtheoperator.
Pullthetoggleswitchupandmoveittothecenter(HOLD)positiontostoptheripper'sshankpin movement.
BrakeOn-Hold(1.)-Thecableshouldnotmove.Usethispositionwhentowing,holdingloador whenwinchisnotinuse.
BrakeOff-ReelIn(2.)-Toreelinthecable,pullthelevertothisposition.Releasetheleverand itwillreturntoHOLD.Thecablewillmovetowardthewinchunderpower.
BrakeOff-Release(3.)-ToRELEASE,pullthelevertothisposition.Releasetheleverandit willreturntoHOLD.Thewinchbrakeisreleased.Thecablewillunreelbytheweightoftheload, orwhenthemachinemovesawayfromload,ifitisheavyenough.
BrakeOff-ReleaseDetent(4.)-Theleverwillremaininthispositionuntilmovedmanually.The resistanceofthewinchmechanismmakesitimpossibletounreelthecablebyhand.
BrakeOff-ReelOut(5.)-ToreelOUTthecable,pullthelevertothisposition.Thecablewill reeloutunderpower.ReleasetheleveranditwillreturntoHOLD.
Inching(FineControlOperation)
Formoreprecisewinchoperationcontrol,anadjustablesequencevalveislocatedinsidethe winch.Ithaseither"inching"or"noinch"characteristicsduringreelinandreeloutoperations. Foradjusting,see"Winching"inthe"OperatingAdjustments"sectionofthisguide.
1.InchingOut-Pulltheleverslowlytoward(5)position,untilthecableorloadstartstomove. Thefarthertheleverispulledback,thefasterthecablewillmoveout.
2.InchingIn-Pulltheleverslowlytowards(2)position,untilthecableorloadstartstomove. Thefarthertheleverispulledback,thefasterthecablewillmovein.

FireSuppressionSystem
SMCS-7310
TheFireSuppressionSystemwillnotbeabletosuppressafireand protecttheoperatorunlessthenitrogenandagentcylindersarefully charged.
Thenitrogenandagentcylindersmustberechargedifthesystemhas beenactivated.ConsultyourCaterpillardealerforrecharging information.
Firesuppressionagents,eitherHalonordrychemicaltype,maycreate hazardstopeopleifdischargedonthem.
Firesuppressionagentcancausebreathingdifficultiesand/orskin irritation.Topreventaccidentaldischargeduringmaintenanceor repairwork,putthedisconnectswitchintheOFFposition.
Firesuppressionagentscanirritateeyes,skinandnasalpassages.Ifthe agentgetsintoeyes,flushthoroughlywithwater,thenconsulta physician.Incaseofskincontact,washallexposedareaswithsoapand water.Ifirritationpersists,afterinhalationorskincontact,consulta physician.
Thepurposeofthefiresuppressionsystemistosuppressanoil,fuelordebrisfire,longenoughto allowtheoperatortosafetyleavethetractor.
Thefiresuppressionsystemwillnotsuppressfiresoutsidethetractor.Itwillnotsuppressfiresin theoperator'scompartment.
Thereareagentdispersionnozzlesstrategicallylocatedinthepowertraincompartmentsandthe enginecompartment.
NOTE:Afiresuppressionsystemisnotmeanttobeasubstituteforahand-heldfireextinguisher. Fireextinguishersarestillrecommended,andareusefulifre-ignitionoccursorwhenfires originateindependentlyofamachineoroutsideaprotectedarea.
ToActivateFireSuppressionSystem(D9LEarlierModelsandD10)
Thesystemwillnotdischargetheagentwiththelockpinsinthevalvetriplever(1).
Topreventaccidentagentdischargewhenshippingorservicingthemachine,eachlockpinmust beremovedfromthemanualreleasehandle(2)andinstalledintheagentcylindervalvetriplever (1).
Beforeoperatingmachine,eachpinmustbepulledfromthevalvetriplever(1)andinstalledin themanualreleasehandle(2).Checkdailybeforeoperatingmachine,tomakesurethepinsarein thisposition.
Theagentcylinderstemperaturegauges(3),shouldbeatorabovetheoutsidetemperature.
WhentheSuppressionAgentisadrychemical,thecylinderpressuregaugesshouldbeinthe greenrange.Ifnot,havethemchargedbeforestartingtheengine.
DischargeoftheFireSuppressionSystem
Thesystemisdesignedtobeactivatedfromanyofthreeareas.
ActuationfromOperator'sCompartment
Thenitrogenactuatorleverhasalockpinthatkeepstheactuatorleverfromaccidentallybeing pulledupanddischarged.
Todischargetheagentcylinders,proceedwiththefollowingsteps.
1.Stopthemachine.
2.Pullthelockpin(1)outofthenitrogenactuatorlever.
3.Liftthenitrogenactuatorlever(2)todischargetheagentcylinders.
4.Getoffmachine,usingstepsandgrabirons.However,iftimepermits,completethefollowing steps:
A.Lowerallraisedequipment.
B.Shiftthetransmissiontoneutral.
C.Engagethetransmissionparkingbrakelocklever.
D.Shutofftheengineiftheautomaticshutdownsystemdidnotshutitoff.
ActuationfromRearofTractor:
1.Pullthelockpin(1)fromthenitrogenactuatorlever(2),locatedunderthefueltank.
2.Liftthelever(2),todischargethenitrogenactuator.
3.Theengineshouldshutoff.
AlternativeManualActuationoftheSystem:
Whenthenitrogenactuatorsdonotactivatethefiresuppressionsystem,fromtheoperator's compartmentorfromtherearofthemachine,analternativeactuationmethodisprovided.
1.Lifttheagentcylinder'scover,locatedontherightsideofthemachine.
1.Lifttheagentcylinder'scover,locatedontheleftsideofthemachine.
2.Pulloutthelockpin(1)ineachmanualactuatorlever(2).
3.Pulluponeachmanualactuatorlever(2).
4.Getoffthemachine.
Ifthemachinemustbemoved,theenginecanberestartedapproximately10secondsafterthe dischargeofagentcylinders.
EngineShutDownSystem
Theengineshouldshutoffautomaticallywhentheagentsystemdischarges.
Tomakecertaintheautomaticengineshutdownsystemisoperable,atestswitchisprovidedon theD9L.TheD10doesnothaveatestswitch.
Withtheengineoperating,pushthetestswitch.Theengineshouldstop.
Iftheenginedoesnotstop,havethesystemrepairedbeforeoperating.
AutomaticActuation(D9LLaterModels)
Thefiresuppressionsystemiselectrically(automaticmode)ormanuallyactuated.Itworkseven ifthemachineisunattendedornotinoperation.Shouldafireoccurwhiletheengineisrunning andtheparkingbrakeisengaged,thesystemautomaticallyactuateswhilesimultaneouslyshutting downtheenginebyanelectrinicallycontrolledfuelshutoff.Evenwiththekeyoffandthe machineparked,thesystemwillcontinuetomonitorheatandactivateifafireisdetected.
Shouldafireoccurwhilethemachineisinoperation(parkingbrakenotengaged),thesystemwill actuatebutwillnotshutdowntheengine.Thisallowstheoperatortomovethemachinetoasafe shutdownarea.
Onceasensorhasdetectedafire,anelectricalsignalwarnstheoperatorandactuatesthesystem. Asolenoidintheoperator'scompartmenttriggersapinintheactuationcylinderthatrupturesa burstdisc,releasingnitrogengasintothelinebetweentheactuationcylinderandtheagent cylinder.This"stored"energydepressesapistonintheagentcylinderrupturinganotherburstdisc whichreleasespressurizedliquidHalon2402ordrychemicalintothelinesandoutofthenozzles. EitherdrychemicalorHalon2402areeffectivesuppressants.Drychemical,however,requires cleanupofresiduetopreventcorrosion.
ManualActuation(D9LLaterModels)
Ifnecessary,thesystemcanbemanuallyactuatedeitherfromthecaborrearofmachine.The operatorremovesasafetypinfromtheactuationcylinderanddepressesaplungerpuncturingthe burstdisc.Thesystemthenproceedsaswiththeautomaticsequence.
ActuationfromOperator'sCompartment
Thenitrogencylinderhasanactuatorlockpinthatkeepsthecylinderfrombeingaccidentally discharged.Toactivatethefiresuppressionsystem,removethelockpinanddepresstheplunger.
1.Stopthemachine.
2.Pullthelockpin(1)outofthenitrogencylinderactuator.
3.Depressthenitrogencylinderactuatorplunger(2)todischargetheagentcylinder.
4.Getoffmachine,usingthestepsandhandholds.However,iftimepermits,completethe followingsteps:
A.Lowerallraisedequipment.
B.Shiftthetransmissiontoneutral.
C.Engagethetransmissionparkingbrakelocklever.
D.Shutofftheengineiftheautomaticshutdownsystemdidnotshutitoff.
ActuationfromRearofMachine
1.Pullthelockpin(1)outfromthenitrogencylinderactuator,locatedunderthefueltankonrear endofthemachine.
2.Depressthenitrogencylinderactuatorplunger(2)todischargetheagentcylinder.
3.Theengineshouldshutoff.
Allnewmachineshaveanelectronicfiremonitorcontrolpanellocatedonthedashtoalertthe operatorofafireonthemachineoraprobleminthefiresuppressionsystem.
1.FireIndicator-Thisredindicatorwillflashandahornwill"BEEP"toindicatethatthereisa fireonthemachineandthatthefiresuppressionsystemhasbeenactivated.
NOTE:Itisimportanttonotethattheelectronicfiremonitorcontrolpaneliswiredtothesame fuseasthatoftheoperatormonitor(EMS),thusbeingcontrolledbythekeyswitch,whereas,the automaticfiresuppressioncontrolpanelcanonlybeelectricallydisconnectedbyturningoffthe machinedisconnectswitch.Also,whenthefirewarninghornis"BEEPING,"itdoessoatarate greaterthanthatofthemachineEMSsystemwarninghorn.
2.SystemFaultIndicator-Thislightindicatesthattheactuationoragentcylinderpressurehas droppedbelowanacceptablelevel.Itwillalsoindicateaprobleminthewiringcircuit,suchas, faultysensorcircuits,anengineshutdownsolenoidoradischargeactuatorsolenoid.Whenthis lightcomeson,findtheproblemandhavetheproblemrepairedbeforeoperating.
3.EngineShutdownTestPush-Button-Theengineshouldshutoffautomaticallywhenthe agentsystemdischarges.Tomakecertaintheautomaticengineshutdownsystemisoperable,a testpush-buttonisprovided.Withthekeyswitchinthe"RUN"positionandtheparkingbrakes applied,pushthetestpush-button.
Thefiresuppressionmonitor"Fire"indicatorshouldflash,thehornshould"BEEP"andtheengine shutdownsolenoidshouldenergizeandshutdowntheengine.Activationofthetestpush-button willnotresultinasystemdischarge.
Iftheenginedoesnotstop,havethesystemrepairedbeforeoperating.
Thereareeightlightslocatedontheautomaticfiresuppressioncontrolpanelthatfunctionas servicelightsfortroubleshootingtheelectricalsystem.Itislocatedbeneaththefloorplateofthe cab.
RefertotheServiceManualforcompletetroubleshootingproceduresofthefiresuppression system.
