PressureAir

Pressureaircancausepersonalinjury.Whenusingpressureairforcleaning,wearaprotectiveface shield,protectiveclothingandprotectiveshoes.Themaximumairpressuremustbebelow205kPa (30psi)forcleaningpurposes.

FluidPenetration

Alwaysuseaboardorcardboardwhencheckingforaleak.Escapingfluidunderpressure,evenapinholesizeleak,canpenetratebodytissue,causingseriousinjury,andpossibledeath.Iffluidisinjected intoyourskin,itmustbetreatedbyadoctorfamiliarwiththistypeofinjuryimmediately.

AsbestosInformation

CaterpillarproductsandreplacementpartsshippedfromCaterpillarareasbestosfree.Caterpillar recommendstheuseofonlygenuineCaterpillarreplacementparts.Ifanyreplacementparts containingasbestosareused,thefollowingguidelinesshouldbeusedinhandlingthesepartsand asbestosdebris.

Cautionshouldbeusedtoavoidbreathingdustthatmightbegeneratedwhenhandlingcomponents containingasbestosfibers.Ifthisdustisinhaled,itcanbehazardoustoyourhealth.Componentsin productsthatmightcontainasbestosfibersarebrakepads,brakebandandliningassemblies,clutch platesandsomegaskets.Theasbestosusedinthesecomponentsisusuallyboundinaresinorsealed insomeway.Normalhandlingisnothazardousaslongasairbornedustwhichcontainsasbestosis notgenerated.

Ifdustwhichcancontainasbestosispresent,thereareseveralcommonsenseguidelinesthatshould befollowed.

*Neverusecompressedairforcleaning.

*Avoidbrushingorgrindingofmaterialscontainingasbestosmaterials.

*Forcleanup,usewetmethodsoravacuumequippedwithahighefficiencyparticulateair (HEPA)filter.

*Useexhaustventilationonpermanentmachiningjobs.

*Wearanapprovedrespirator,ifthereisnootherwaytocontrolthedust.

*Complywithapplicablerulesandregulationsfortheworkplace(forexampleintheU.S.A., OSHArequirementsassetforthin29CFR1910.1001).

*Followenvironmentalrulesandregulationsfordisposalofasbestos.

*Avoidareaswhereasbestosparticlesmightbeintheair.

CrushingorCuttingPrevention

Supportequipmentandattachmentsproperlywhenworkingbeneaththem.Donotdependon hydrauliccylinderstoholditup.Anyattachmentcanfallifacontrolismoved,orifahydraulicline breaks.

Neverattemptadjustmentswhilethemachineismovingortheengineisrunningunlessotherwise specified.

Wherethereareattachmentlinkages,theclearanceinthelinkageareaincreasesordecreaseswith movementoftheattachment.

Stayclearofallrotatingandmovingparts.

Keepobjectsawayfrommovingfanblades.Theythroworcutanyobjectortoolthatfallsoris pushedintothem.

Donotuseakinkedorfrayedwireropecable.Weargloveswhenhandlingwireropecable.

Retainerpins,whenstruckwithforce,canflyoutandinjurenearbypersons.Makesuretheareais clearofpeoplewhendrivingretainerpins.

Wearprotectiveglasseswhenstrikingaretainerpintoavoidinjurytoyoureyes.

Chipsorotherdebriscanflyoffobjectswhenstruck.Makesurenoonecanbeinjuredbyflying debrisbeforestrikinganyobject.

RolloverProtectiveStructure(ROPS)orFallingObjectsProtectiveStructure(FOPS)

ROPSorFOPSisaguard(canopy)locatedabovetheoperator'scompartmentandsecuredtothe machine.

ToavoidpossibleweakeningoftheROPSorFOPS,contactyourCaterpillardealerbeforealtering, byaddingweightto,weldingon,orcuttingordrillingholesintothestructure.

AnyalterationnotspecificallyauthorizedbyCaterpillarinvalidatesCaterpillar'sROPSandFOPS certification.TheprotectionofferedbythisROPS/FOPSisimpairedifithasbeensubjectedto structuraldamage.Structuraldamagecanbecausedbyanoverturnaccident,byfallingobjects,etc.

Donotmountanyitem,suchasfireextinguishers,firstaidkitsandlights,byweldingbracketstoor drillingholesinanyROPS/FOPSstructure.ContactyourCaterpillardealerformountingguidelines.

BurnPrevention

Coolant

Atoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishotandunderpressure.Theradiatorandalllinesto heatersortheenginecontainhotcoolantorsteam.Anycontactcancausesevereburns.

Steamcancausepersonalinjury.

Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthefillcapiscoolenoughto removewithyourbarehand.

Removethecoolingsystemfillcapslowlytorelievepressure.

Coolingsystemadditivecontainsalkalithatcancausepersonalinjury.Avoidcontactwiththeskin, eyesandmouth.

Allowcoolingsystemcomponentstocoolbeforedraining.

Oils

Hotoilandcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoilorcomponentstocontactthe skin.

Atoperatingtemperature,thehydraulictankishotandcanbeunderpressure.

Removethehydraulictankfillcaponlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthefillcapiscool enoughtoremovewithyourbarehand.

Removethehydraulictankfillcapslowlytorelievepressure.

Relieveallpressureinair,oil,fuel,orcoolingsystemsbeforeanylines,fittingsorrelateditemsare disconnectedorremoved.

Batteries

Batteriesgiveoffflammablefumeswhichcanexplode.

Donotsmokewhenobservingthebatteryelectrolytelevels.

Electrolyteisanacidandcancausepersonalinjuryifitcontactsskinoreyes.

Alwayswearprotectiveglasseswhenworkingwithbatteries.

FireorExplosionPrevention

Allfuels,mostlubricants,andsomecoolantmixturesareflammable.

Fuelleakedorspilledontohotsurfacesorelectricalcomponentscancauseafire.

Donotsmokewhilerefuelingorinarefuelingarea.

Donotsmokeinareaswherebatteriesarecharged,orwhereflammablematerialsarestored.

Batteriescanbelocatedinseparatecompartments.Whenusingjumpercablesalwaysconnectpositive (+)cabletopositive(+)terminalofbatteryconnectedtostartersolenoidandnegative(-)cablefrom externalsourcetostarternegative(-)terminal.(Ifnotequippedwithstarternegative(-)terminal, connecttoengineblock.)

SeetheOperationSectionofthismanualforspecificstartinginstructions.

Cleanandtightenallelectricalconnections.Checkdailyforlooseorfrayedelectricalwires.Haveall looseorfrayedelectricalwirestightened,repaired,orreplacedbeforeoperatingthemachine.

Keepallfuelsandlubricantsstoredinproperlymarkedcontainersandawayfromallunauthorized persons.

Storealloilyragsorotherflammablematerialinaprotectivecontainer.

Donotweldorflamecutonpipesortubesthatcontainflammablefluids.Cleanthemthoroughlywith nonflammablesolventbeforeweldingorflamecuttingonthem.

Removeallflammablematerialssuchasfuel,oilandotherdebrisbeforetheyaccumulateonthe machine.

Ifatallpossible,donotexposethemachinetoflames,burningbrush,etc.

Shields,whichprotecthotexhaustcomponentsfromoilorfuelsprayintheeventofaline,tubeor sealfailure,mustbeinstalledcorrectly.

FireExtinguisher

Haveafireextinguisheravailableandknowhowtouseit.Inspectandhaveitservicedas recommendedonitsinstructionplate.

DonotweldonordrillholesintheROPSorFOPSstructuretomountthefireextinguisheronthe ROPSorFOPS.

AfireextinguishercanbemountedtotheROPSorFOPSlegs,bystrappingthemountingplatetothe leg.Keepthefireextinguisherover4.5kg(10lb)size,aslowaspossibleononeleg.But,never mountitinthetopone-thirdlengthoftheleg.

Ether

Etherispoisonousandflammable.

Breathingethervaporsorrepeatedcontactofetherwithskincancausepersonalinjury.

Useetheronlyinwell-ventilatedareas.

Donotsmokewhilechangingethercylinders.

Useetherwithcaretoavoidfires.

Donotstorereplacementethercylindersinlivingareasorintheoperator'scompartment.

Donotstoreethercylindersindirectsunlightorattemperaturesabove40°C(102°F).

Discardcylindersinaprotectiveplace.Donotpunctureorburncylinders.

Keepethercylindersoutofthereachofunauthorizedpersonnel.

Lines,TubesandHoses

Donotbendorstrikehighpressurelines.Donotinstallbentordamagedlines,tubesorhoses.

Repairanylooseordamagedfuelandoillines,tubesandhoses.Leakscancausefires.Contactyour Caterpillardealerforrepairorreplacement.

Checklines,tubesandhosescarefully.Donotuseyourbarehandtocheckforleaks.Useaboardor cardboardtocheckforleaks.SeethetopicFluidPenetrationintheSafetySectionofthismanualfor moredetailedinformation.Tightenallconnectionstotherecommendedtorque.Replaceifanyofthe followingconditionsarefound:

*Endfittingsdamagedorleaking.

*Outercoveringchafedorcutandwirereinforcingexposed.

*Outercoveringballooninglocally.

*Evidenceofkinkingorcrushingoftheflexiblepartofhose.

*Armoringembeddedintheoutercover.

*Endfittingsdisplaced.

Makesurethatallclamps,guardsandheatshieldsareinstalledcorrectlytopreventvibration,rubbing againstotherparts,andexcessiveheatduringoperation.

ReleaseHydraulicPressure

Suddenmovementofthemachineorreleaseofoilunderpressurecan causeinjurytopersonsonornearthemachine.Topreventpossible injury,dotheprocedurethatfollowsbeforetestingandadjustingthe hydraulicsystem.

1.Movethemachinetoasmoothhorizontallocation.Moveawayfromworkingmachinesand personnelandlowerimplementstotheground.

2.Permitonlyoneoperatoronthemachine.Keepallotherpersonneleitherawayfromthemachineor inviewoftheoperator.

3.Activatetheparkingbrake.

4.Stoptheengine.

5.Movetheimplementcontrolleverstoallpositionstoreleasethepressureinthehydraulicsystem.

6.Carefullyloosenthefillercaponthehydraulictanktoreleasethepressureonthetank.

7.Makesureallhydraulicpressureisreleasedbeforeanyfitting,hoseorcomponentisloosened, tightened,removedoradjusted.

8.Tightenthefillercaponthehydraulictank.

9.Thepressureinthesystemhasnowbeenreleasedandlinesorcomponentscanberemoved.

MountingandDismounting

*Mountanddismountthemachineonlywherestepsand/orhandholdsareprovided.

*Inspect,andwhennecessary,cleanandhaverepairsmadetostepsandhandholdsbefore mountinganddismounting.

*Facethemachinewhenmountinganddismounting.

*Maintainathree-pointcontact(twofeetandonehandoronefootandtwohands)withthe stepsandhandholds.

*Nevergetonoroffamovingmachine.

*Neverjumpoffthemachine.

*Donottrytoclimbonoroffthemachinewhencarryingtoolsorsupplies.Useahandlineto pullequipmentupontotheplatform.

*Donotuseanycontrolsashandholdswhenenteringorleavingtheoperator'scompartment.

AlternateExit

Machinesequippedwithcabsareequippedwithalternateexits.Foradditionalalternateexit information,seethetopicCabDoors(IfEquipped)underMonitoringSystemsandCabFeaturesin theOperationSectionofthismanual.

BeforeStartingEngine

Starttheengineonlyfromtheoperator'scompartment.Nevershortacrossthestarterterminalsor acrossthebatteries,asthiscouldbypasstheengineneutral-startsystemaswellasdamagethe electricalsystem.

Inspecttheconditionoftheseatbeltandmountinghardware.Replaceanydamagedorwornparts. Replacetheseatbeltregardlessofappearance,afterthreeyearsofuse.

Adjusttheseatsothatfullpedaltravelcanbeobtainedwiththeoperator'sbackagainsttheseatback.

Makesurethemachineisequippedwithalightingsystemasrequiredbyconditions.

Makesurealllightsareworkingproperly.

Makesurenooneisworkingon,underneath,orclosetothemachinebeforestartingtheengineor beginningtomovethemachine.Makesuretheareaisfreeofpersonnel.

EngineStarting

DonotstarttheengineormoveanyofthecontrolsifthereisaDONOTOPERATEorsimilar warningtagattachedtothestartswitchorcontrols.

MoveallhydrauliccontrolstotheHOLDpositionbeforestartingtheengine.

MovethetransmissioncontrollevertoNEUTRAL.

Engagetheparkingbrake.

Dieselengineexhaustcontainsproductsofcombustionwhichcanbeharmfultoyourhealth.Always startandoperatetheengineinawell-ventilatedareaand,ifinanenclosedarea,venttheexhaustto theoutside.

BeforeOperatingMachine

Clearallpersonnelfromthemachineandthearea.

Clearallobstaclesfromthepathofthemachine.Bewareofhazardssuchaswires,ditches,etc.

Besureallwindowsareclean.Securethedoorsandwindowsineithertheopenorshutposition.

Adjusttherearviewmirrorsforbestvision,especiallyclosetothemachine.

Makesurethemachinehorn,theback-upalarm(ifequipped)andallotherwarningdevicesare workingproperly.

Fastentheseatbeltsecurely.

MachineOperation

Operatethemachineonlywhileseatedandwiththeseatbeltfastened.

Operatethecontrolsonlywiththeenginerunning.

Checkforproperoperationofallcontrolsandprotectivedeviceswhilemovingslowlyinanopen area.

Theoperatormustbesatisfiedthatnooneisendangeredbeforemovingthemachine.

Donotallowridersonthemachineunlessadditionalseat,seatbeltandRolloverProtectiveStructure (ROPS)orFallingObjectProtectiveStructure(FOPS)areprovided.

Reportanyneededrepairsnotedduringoperation.

Carryattachmentsclosetotheground,approximately40cm(15in)abovegroundlevel.

Stayanadequatedistancefromtheedgeofcliffs,overhangsandslideareas.

Ifthemachinebeginstosidesliponagrade,immediatelydisposeoftheloadandturnthemachine downhill.

Becarefultoavoidtheconditionwhichcouldleadtotippingwhenworkingonhills,banksorslopes, andwhencrossingditches,ridgesorotherobstructions.

Workupanddownslopes,ratherthansideways,wheneverpossible.

Keepthemachineundercontrolanddonotworkitoveritscapacity.

Besurehitchpointsandthetowingdeviceareadequate.

Connecttrailingequipmenttoadrawbarorhitchonly.

Neverstraddleawireropecableorsimilardevice,norallowotherstodoso.

Nopersonnelshouldbebetweenthemachineandtrailingequipmentwhenmaneuveringtoconnect them.Blockthetongueorhitchoftrailingequipmenttoalignitwiththedrawbarorhitch.

Knowthemaximumheightandreachofyourmachine.

AlwayskeeptheRolloverProtectiveStructure(ROPS)orFallingObjectProtectiveStructure(FOPS) installedwhenoperatingthemachine.

MachineParking

CoolantInformation

Dieselengineoperatingtemperatureshaveincreasedtoimproveengineefficiency.Thismeansproper coolingsystemmaintenanceisespeciallyimportant.Overheating,overcooling,pitting,cavitation erosion,crackedheads,pistonseizures,andpluggedradiatorsareclassiccoolingsystemfailures.In fact,coolantisasimportantasthequalityoffuelandlubricatingoil.

NOTICE

Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixturecontainaminimum of30percentCaterpillarAntifreeze,orequivalent.Liquid supplementalcoolantadditivemustbeadded,whennotusing CaterpillarAntifreeze,whichcontainstheproperadditive.

Neveraddcoolanttoanoverheatedengine,enginedamagecanresult. Allowtheenginetocoolfirst.

Allwateriscorrosiveatengineoperatingtemperature.Thecooling systemshouldbeprotectedwitha3to6percentconcentrationofliquid supplementalcoolantadditiveatalltimes,regardlessofthe concentrationofantifreeze.

Excessivesupplementalcoolantadditivegreaterthanthe recommended6percent,togetherwithconcentrationsofantifreeze greaterthan65percentcancausedepositstoformandcanresultin radiatortubeblockage,overheating,and/orwaterpumpsealdamage.

Ifthemachineistobestoredin,orshippedto,anareawithfreezing temperatures,thecoolingsystemmustbeprotectedtothelowest expectedoutside(ambient)temperature.
