GeneralSafetyRecommendations

Safetyforoperatorsandgroundpersonnelisofprimeconcern.Alwaystakethenecessary precautionstoensuresafetytoothersaswellasyourself.Toensuresafety,thetractorandwinch mustbeoperatedwithcare,concernbytheoperatorfortheequipmentandathoroughknowledge ofthemachine'sperformancecapabilities.Thefollowingrecommendationsareofferedasa generalsafetyguide.Localrulesandregulationswillalsoapply.

1.ReadallwarningtaginformationandbecomefamiliarwithallcontrolsBEFOREoperating winch.

2.Neverattempttoclean,oilorperformanymaintenanceonamachinewiththeenginerunning, unlessinstructedtodosointheServiceManual.

3.Beforestartingtractor,becertainallcontrolsmovefreelyandareplacedinthe"BrakeOn"(neutral)position.

4.Neveroperatewinchcontrolsunlessyouareproperlyseatedattheoperatorsstationonthe tractorandyouaresurepersonnelareclearofworkarea.

5.Operatewinchlinespeedstomatchjobconditions.

6.Assurethatpersonnelwhoareresponsibleforhandsignalsareclearlyvisibleandthatthe signalstobeusedarethoroughlyunderstoodbyeveryone.

7.Neverattempttohandlewinchcablewhenthehookendisnotfree.

8.Leatherglovesshouldbeusedwhenhandlingwinchcable.

9.Groundpersonnelshouldstayinviewoftractoroperatorandclearofwinchdrum.Donotallow groundpersonnelnearwinchlineundertension.Asafedistanceofatleast11/2timesthelength ofthecableinuseshouldbemaintained.

10.Whenwindingcableonthewinchdrum,neverattempttomaintaintensionbyallowingcable toslipthroughhands.Alwaysuse"hand-over-hand"method.

11.Usecorrectsizeferruleforcableandpocketinwinchdrum.Neveruseknotstosecureor attachcable.

12.Inspectrigging,winchandtractoratthebeginningofeachworkshift.Anycablewithbroken strandsorriggingwornordamagedshouldbereplaced.

13.Positiontractorforstraightestlineofpull.Usefairleadifsidepullsarefrequentlyencountered.

14.Thecableanchororferrulepocketinthecabledrumisdesignedtoprovideaselfreleaseinthe eventaback-slidingloadmustbereleasedfromthetractorinanemergencysituation.Thecable anchororferrulealonewillNOTsupportratedlinepull.Therefore,aminimumoffive(5) completewrapsofcablemustbemaintainedonwinchdrum.

15.Besureoftractorgroundstabilitybeforewinchinginload.

16.Storeunusedchokers,slingsandrigginginaneatandorderlyfashiontopreventdamageto equipmentorinjurytopersonnel.

17.ThemaximumratedbaredrumlinepullofthePA55is69,200lb(307.8kN)*and89,800lb (399.4kN)**forthePA56.Donotoperatethewinchunderloadsthatexceedthemaximumrated baredrumlinepull.Ifexcessiveloadsareencountered,useamulti-partlineandsheaveblocks. Anyattempttoexceedthecapabilitiesofonewinch(suchascoupling2ormoretractorstogether) isextremelyhazardous.

18.ThefactoryapprovedadaptionsforPaccarwinchesaredesignedandintendedforuseon specificmodelsofcrawlertractors.Changingwinchesbetweentractorsisnotpossibleinsome casesbecauseofdifferencesintractormodels.SomechangescannotbeapprovedbyPaccarwinch becauseofsafetylimitations.CallaPaccarwinchdealerortheFactorypriortoattemptingwinch modificationsorbeforemountingonadifferenttractor.

19.Paccarpowershiftwinchesareequippedwithhydraulicaccumulators.Dischargethe accumulatorstoredoilsupplybeforeremovinganyhydrauliclinesorfittingsorservicingwinch. Personalinjurymayresultfromthesuddenreleaseofoilpressure.Todischargetheaccumulator, stoptheengine,slowlycyclethePowerShiftcontrolhandleintofullReel-InthenReel-Out positionsaminimumoffive(5)times.

20.Onmachineshavinghydraulically,mechanicallyand/orcablecontrolledequipment,becertain theequipmentiseitherloweredtothegroundorblockedsecurelybeforeservicing,adjusting and/orrepairingthewinch.Alwaysapplytractorparkingbrakesandlowerequipmentbefore dismountingthetractor.

ModelDescription

ThePaccarPowerShiftWinchisasingledrumunitwhichmountsontherearofacrawlertractor. ItisdrivenbyenginepowerthroughthetractorPTO(PowerTake-Off).Thewinchmaybe operatedindependentlyorwiththetractortransmissionengaged.Whenoperatedproperly,itis capableofutilizingmaximumenginehorsepower.Thewinchhasequalspeedgearing,power-in andpower-out,usingmultiple-discoilactuatedfrictionclutchesandaspringappliedhydraulically releasedmultiple-discoilbrake.

ThewinchmaybemanufacturedasaStandardPTOorLowPTOconfiguration,dependingon tractorapplication.IntheStandardPTOconfiguration,thebevelgeargroup,clutchandbrake componentsarelocatedintheupperboresofthewinchcase.

StandardPTOShown

TheLowPTOwinchdesignhasthebevelgeargroup,clutchandbrakecomponentslocatedinthe lowerboresofthewinchcase.

TheModelPA55mayhaveeithera3-shaftor4-shaftgeartrainconfigurationdependinguponthe tractorhorsepower,PTOspeedandlinespeedrequirementsofthewinchapplication.AllPA56 serieswinchesare4-shaftconfiguration.

StandardandLowPTOconfigurationsareavailableaseitherastandardorslowspeed.The standardspeedwinchisprimarilyusedinlogging,landclearingandgeneralutilityapplications. ThestandardspeedmodelhasgearratioswhichmatchthecabledrumrotationinHaul-In (forward)toreversetrackspeedsforoptimumadvantageintractorrecovery.

Theslowspeedconfigurationissimilartothestandardspeedbutusesslowspeedgearingfor greaterloadcontrol.Theslowspeedconfigurationiswellsuitedtooilandgasfield,miningand pipelineapplications.

Optionalfeaturesincreasethewinchesabilitytomeetspecificapplicationrequirements.Options availableforthePA55andPA56serieswinchesincludes:

-FreeSpool -GearRatios -ThreeorFourRollerFairleads

Thewinchmodelnumberisanimportantreferenceastowhatoptionalcomponentswereused whenthewinchwasmanufactured.Thewinchidentificationplateislocatedontherighthandside ofthewinchcase.Theserialnumberisalsostampedintotheupperrighthandmountingpad.

WinchOperation

HydraulicSystem

Thewinchcontainsanindependent,internalhydraulicsystem.Thewinchhousingservesasa reservoirandstoresfilteredoilfortheinternallymountedhydraulicpump.Thepumpisdrivenby agearpressedontothebevelpiniongear.ThepumpsuppliesoilwheneverthePTOshaftis turning.Oilfromthepumpisroutedthroughapressurefilterthendirectedtothecontrolvalve whereastand-bysystempressureismaintainedat320-410psi(2210-2830kPa).

ThesystemoilpressureisroutedthroughthecontrolvalvebodytotheDirectionalandBrake controlcartridges.MovementoftheDirectionalcontrolspoolopenspassageswhichdirectoilto applytheReel-InorReel-Outclutchesandreleasethespringappliedmulti-discoilbrake.

MovementoftheBrakespoolwilldirectoiltoreleasethebrakeonly.Themovementofthespools respondstothepositionoftheoperatorsPowerShiftcontrolleverbymeansofflexiblecontrol cables.

WinchcontrolswithoptionalFreeSpool.

Thewinchhydraulicsystemisequippedwithanaccumulator.Theaccumulatorstoresasmall amountofoilatsystempressuretoassisttheapplicationoftheclutchesandreleaseofthebrake underalloperatingconditions.Thestoredoilsupplymayalsobeusedtoreleasethespringapplied brakewheneverthetractorengineortorqueconverterisstalled.Theaccumulatorstoredoilsupply iscontinuouslyrefilledbythewinchpumpandvalvewheneverthePTOshaftisturning.

OntractorswhichsupplyPTOpowerthroughthetorqueconverter,itispossibletocausethe torqueconvertertostallifthetractorenginespeedistoolow.Itisimportantthatengineidlespeed besettofactoryspecifications.

NOTICE

Dischargeaccumulatoroilsupplybeforeremovinganyhydrauliclines orservicingwinch.Personalinjurymayresultfromsuddenreleaseof oilpressure.Todischargetheaccumulator,stopengine,slowlycycle PowerShiftcontrolhandleintofullReel-InthenReel-Outpositionsa minimumoffive(5)times.

GearTrain

Thewinchbevelpinion,bevelgears,hydraulicpumpandclutchfrictiondiscsarerotating wheneverthetractorPTOshaftisrotating.Applicationofaclutch,Reel-InorReel-Out,andthe simultaneousreleaseofthebrakewillcausetherotationoftheremaininggeartrainandcable drum.Seeillustrationsbelow.

Theclutchshaftassembly(withbevelgears)mustturn40.4timesforone(1)rotationofthecable drumona4shaftgeartrainwinchand22.3timesona3shaftgeartrainwinch.

ThedirectionofthetractorPTOshaftrotationandtherightandlefthandclutchlocationis determinedbyfacingtherearofthetractor.

Thecabledrumrotationmaybeeasilychangedfromoverwind(standard)tounderwindby reversingclutchpressurelinesatthecontrolvalveportsC1andC2andinstallingthewireropein theoppositecabledrumferrulepocket.

ControlOperation

PowerShift(PS)-SingleLever

Theoperator'scontrollevermustALWAYSbemovedtoitsfulltravelinReel-In(forward)and Reel-Out(reverse).Thespeedofthecabledrumrotationshouldbecontrolledbyvaryingthe tractorengineRPM.Sufficienthydraulicpressurewillbeavailabletofullyapplytheclutchesat engine(PTO)speedsabovelowidle.Ifthewinchismountedonadirectdrivetractor,thetractor masterclutchMUSTbeengagedBEFOREmovingthepowershiftlever.Theinternalwinch pumpisonlydrivenwhenthePTOshaftisturning.Acontinuousoilsupplyisneededtoprovide reliableclutchandbrakeoperation.

NOTICE

Anyattempttoregulatedrumspeed(linespeed)throughthecontrol leverbypartiallyapplyingor"feathering"theclutcheswillcause excessiveheatduetoslippageandseveredamagetoclutchdiscsmay result.

Brake-On(neutral).ControlleverisspringcenteredtoBrake-On.Thebrakeisappliedbyspring force.Thecabledrumandloadisheldsecurebythespringappliedbrake.

Reel-In(forward).Thecontrolleverispulledtowardtheoperatortothefullyengagedposition. ThebrakeishydraulicallyreleasedandReel-In(forward)clutchishydraulicallyapplied.

Brake-Off.Thebrakeishydraulicallyreleasedbymovingthecontrollevertotheleft.Partial brakereleasemaybeachievedbyslowlymovingthecontrolleverintothegate.Theamountof brakereleaseisproportionaltothedistancethelevermovesintothegate.

Fullbrakereleaseisachievedbymovingtheleverfullytotheleftintothelockposition.Withthe brakereleased,thetractormaywalkawayfromtheload.AlwaysreturnthecontrollevertoBrakeOn(neutral)position.

Reel-Out(reverse).Thecontrolleverispushedawayfromtheoperatortothefullyengaged position.ThebrakeishydraulicallyreleasedandReel-Out(reverse)clutchishydraulically applied.

Fornormalwinchandtractoroperation,theFreeSpoollevershouldremaininthedrumEngaged position(awayfromoperator).

TooperateFreeSpool,placePowerShiftleverintoBrake-OffpositionandshifttheFreeSpool leverintotheDisengagedposition(towardoperator).Thiswilldisengagethedrumdrivegears fromthegeartrainandbrakewhichpermitsthewireropetobeeasilypulledoffthedrumby hand.ReturnthePowerShiftlevertoBrake-On(neutral)positiontoholdthegeartrainstationary.

Toresumepoweredoperationofthecabledrum,shifttheFreeSpoolcontrollevertotheEngaged position(awayfromoperator).

Ifthegeartrainwillnotengage,momentarilyapplytheReel-In(forward)clutchto"bump"the geartrainwhileholdingslightpressureontheFreeSpoollever.NeverforcetheFreeSpoollever. Theshiftwillbemadewitheasewhenthegearsarealigned.

NOTICE

Freespoolistobeusedwhenthetractorisstoppedforpullingwire ropeoffofthecabledrumbyhand,ONLY.DONOTuseFreespool whenthetractorisinmotion,toreleasealoadortomoveawayfroma loadattachedtothewirerope;damagetothegeartrainandlossof loadcontrolmayresult.Lossofloadcontrolmayresultinproperty damage,injuryordeath.

Toreleasealoadortomoveawayfromaload,theReel-Out(reverse) orBrake-Offfunctionmustbeused.

Thetractorandcabledrummustbestoppedtoreengagethegear train.Geartraindamagewillresultfromattemptingtoreengagethe geartrainwhenthedrumisrotating.

Acabledrumdragadjustmentmaybemadetoeliminate"birdnesting"causedbydrumoverrun. Adjustmentismadebyremovingthelockplateandturningthethreadedadjusterclockwiseto increasedrag;counterclockwisetodecreasedrag.

Usingalongscrewdriverorprybar,turnthethreadedadjusterclockwiseuntiltight.Tapthe adjusterwithahammertoseatthebearingandcontinueturninguntiltheadjustercannolongerbe tightened.Backtheadjusteroutnomorethan1/16turnmaximumandsecurewithlockplateand capscrews.Tightenthecapscrewsto75lb·ft(102N·m)torque.

NOTE:Tighteningthethreadedadjusterpushesthetaperedbearingcup(outerrace)intocloser contactwiththebearingconeandincreasesthebearingdrag;muchliketighteningawheelbearing nutonanautomobileortruck.ThesnugfittingbearingcupwillNOTmoveoutwardwiththe threadedadjusterwhentheadjusterisloosened.Thewinchmustbeoperatedunderloadforabrief periodtoallowthegeartrainloadtopushtheouterbearingcupoutagainstthethreadedadjuster beforeareductioninbearingdragcanbenoticed.

NOTICE

Donotbackoffadjustermorethan1/16turnasthisallowsexcessive shaftendplayandmaycausegeartrainmisalignment,accelerated wearandnoise.

PreventiveMaintenance&Specifications

AregularprogramofpreventivemaintenanceforyourPaccarwinchwillminimizetheneedfor emergencyservicingandpromotelongproductlifeandtrouble-freeservice.

Theserviceintervalssuggestedinthismanualwilloptimizecomponentservicelife.Theintervals maybegraduallyincreasedordecreasedwithexperienceofaparticularlubricantandevaluationof yourapplication.

NOTICE

1.OilLevel

Checkoillevelatthebeginningofeachworkshift,withtractorandwinchinlevelposition. Oilmustbevisibleintheupperhalfofthesightgauge.Ifanoillevelplugisusedinplaceof thesightgauge,theoillevelshouldbeatthebottomofthelevelplughole.Addoilasrequired throughthefillplugattopofwinchcase.

2.OilChange,FilterandStrainerService

Undernormaloperatingconditions,theoilandpressurecircuitfiltershouldbechangedand suctionstrainercleanedafterthefirst100-250hoursofoperation,thenevery1000hoursor sixmonths,whicheveroccursfirst,orwhenthefilterbypassindicatorlightremainsonafter initialwarmup.

Hotoilmaycauseinjury.Makecertainoilhascooledtoasafe temperaturebeforeservicing.

Todrainoil,placetractorandwinchinlevelpositionandremovedrainpluglocatedatlower righthandsideofwinchcase.Drainoilintoasuitablecontainerandrecycleordisposeof usedoilinanenvironmentallyresponsiblemanner.Installplugsecurelyafteroilhasbeen drained.Afteroilhasdrained,removefoursuctionstrainercovercapscrewsandcover. Removesuctionstrainerfromwinchcasethenremovemetalbandandmagneticrodsfrom suctionstrainer.Thoroughlywashstrainerincleansafetysolventandblowdrywith compressedair,inspectwiremeshfordamageorcloggingwithdebris.Donotreusea damagedsuctionstrainer.

Installmagneticrodsontosuctionstrainerusingmetalband.Lubricateo-ringandinstall strainerspringandcoverintowinchcase.

Ifthesuctionstrainershieldorshieldsealringsareremovedforanyreason,reinstallthemby followingtheprocedurelistedbelow:

NOTES:

1.Installshield,PartNumber118-6283,betweenconnectorandstrainerasshown,withopen sidefacingdownward.

2.Measuredistance"X",fromshieldtostrainercovermountingsurface.

3.If"X"dimensionisbetween0.720in.and0.783in.(18.3-19.9mm),addoneseal,1186286,outboardofseal118-6284.

4.If"X"dimensionisgreaterthan0.783in.(19.9mm),addtwoseals,118-6286,outboardof seal118-6284.

Seal118-6284is.25in.(6.4mm)thick.

Seal118-6286is.06in.(1.5mm)thick.

Refillwinchtoproperlevelwithrecommendedoil.

OILCAPACITY:

Std.PTO-78qt.(74I)

LowPTO-66qt.(63I)

Topreventseriousdamagetowinch,donotrunenginewhileoilis drainedfromwinch.

Thepressurefilterislocatedbehindtherighthand,eight-boltaccesscover.Removethecover, locatethespin-onpressurefilterandremovethefilterelementwithastrapwrench.

Lubricatethefiltergasketandadapterthreadswithhydraulicoilandinstallnewfilterelement ontofilterhead.Tighten1/2-3/4turnaftersealringmakescontactwithfilterhead.

Starttractorandoperateengineatlowidle.Correctanyleaks.

Theindicatorlightmaycomeonforashorttimeduringinitialcoldstart-upbutshouldgoout astheoilwarmsup.Ifthelightstayson,thisindicatesarestrictedfilterelement,sendingunit stuckinthebypasspositionoraccidentallygroundedsendingunitwire.

3.ControlCableandPressureAdjustment

Whiletheaccesscoverisremoved,itisadvisabletocheckcontrolcableadjustmentand hydraulicmainreliefpressure.PlacethePowerShiftcontrolleverinthecenter"BrakeOn"(neutral)position.Installtheyokepinsintothecableyokes/controlvalvespoolsand securewithhitchpins.Theyokepinsshouldslipeasilyintotheboreswithoutanybinding. Thecontrolvalvespoolsarespringcentered.Ifyounoticeanybinding,turnthecable adjustersinoroutuntilyouobtaina"freepin"condition.

Makecertainaccumulatorstoredoilsupplyhasbeendischargedasdescribedearlier.Installan accurate0-600psi(4140kPa)gaugeontothegaugeportnexttothecontrolcables.Startthe tractorandoperatetheengineatapproximate800-1000RPMuntilpressurestabilizes.The maximumpressuringduring"charging"modeshouldpeakat400psi(2760kPa).Pressure willslowlyfallbackapproximately15-20%fromthereliefsettingthenquicklyreturnto400 psi(2760kPa)whenthevalvecycles.

Ifadjustmentisrequired,locatetheadjustmentscrewholebehindport"P"ofthecontrol valve.Witha1/4in.Allenkey,loosentheouterlockscrew.Inserta3/16in.Allenkeythrough thelockscrewandturntheadjustingscrewclockwisetoincreasepeakpressure; counterclockwisetodecreasepeakpressure.Tightenthelockscrew.

TIP:ItmaybehelpfultoplacethecontrolsinBrake-Offtousesomeoilinthecontrolcircuit andcausethevalvetoslowly"cycle"sothatpeakpressuremaybemoreeasilyobserved.

Stopengine,dischargeaccumulatorstoredoilsupplyasdescribedearlierandmovehydraulic gaugetothe"B"testportonthebrakehousing.A1/4NPTadapterwillberequired.

Starttractorandoperateengineatapproximately800-1000RPM.PlacePowerShiftleverin theBrake-OffpositionandobserveBRAKE-RELEASEoilpressure.Loosencableadjusteror cableyokejam-nutandadjustbrakecontrolcabletoachieveapproximately300psi(2070 kPa)BRAKE-RELEASEpressure.

StandawayfromserviceaccessofwinchandreturnPowerShiftlevertotheBRAKE-ON (neutral)position.BRAKERELEASEpressuremustreturnto0withthecontrolsinBRAKEON(neutral)position.

TIP:OptimumBRAKE-RELEASEpressureisthehighestpressureyoucanachievewhile ensuringpressureALWAYSdropsto0whencontrolsarereturnedtoBRAKE-ON.Excessive

Theventislocatednexttothepowershiftcontrolcables.Itisveryimportanttokeepthisvent cleanandunobstructed.Whenevertheoilischanged,removeventplug,cleaninsafety solventandreinstall.Donotreplacewithasolidplug.

5.WinchCable(wirerope)

Inspectentirelengthofwirerope,chokersandhooksaccordingtowireropeandrigging manufacturersrecommendations.

6.MountingFasteners

Check/tightenallwinchmountingfastenerstorecommendedtorqueafterthefirst100-250 hoursofoperation,thenevery1000operatinghoursorsix(6)months,whicheveroccursfirst.

7.Warm-UpProcedure

Awarm-upprocedureisrecommendedateachstart-upandisessential atambienttemperaturesbelow+40°F(4°C).Failuretowarm-upwinch hydraulicsystemmayresultinerraticclutch/brakeoperationwhich mayresultinpropertydamage,personalinjuryordeath.

Starttractorengineandoperateatlowidleforfiveminutes.

ShifttheFreeSpoollever(ifequipped)totheDisengagedposition.Then,withthetractorengineat lowidle,placePowerShiftleverinReel-In(forward)position.Thewinchgeartrainwillrotateand warmtheoiltooperatingtemperature.

NOTICE

Donotshiftfreespoolleverandattempttoengagecabledrumwhile thecabledrumorgeartraininrotating.Winchgeartraindamagemay result.

IfnotequippedwithFreeSpool,operatewinchalternatelyinPay-OutandHaul-Inwithlittleorno loadtowarmtheoilandlubricatethegeartrain.
