Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)liststhe itemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelistedunderthe "WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepagenumberforthestep-bystepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.UsetheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule asanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenientservicing schedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedserviceshouldalwaysbe performedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500servicehoursor 3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery10service hoursordaily.

DieselengineexhaustandsomeofitsconstituentsareknowntotheStateofCaliforniatocausecancer,birth defects,andotherreproductiveharm.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairisessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperatingcorrectly.As theheavydutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceoftherequired maintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,andServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,ortrading enginesormachinestoremove,alter,orrenderinoperativeanyemissionrelateddeviceorelementofdesign

installedonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewiththeregulations(40CFRPart89).Certain elementsofthemachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeair systemandcoolingsystemmaybeemissionrelatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadverselyaffect performancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchasbrakes,steering, androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurtherinformation.

CatProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theCatProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Inanefforttoprovideuniformequipmentidentification,Caterpillarandotherconstruction equipmentmanufacturersaremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentification numberingstandard.Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplyto allCatmachinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN. ManufacturersofearthmovingequipmentuseaProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)inordertoidentifythe products.ProductIdentificationNumberorPINisacommontermthatisusedthroughouttheindustry.

CaterpillarwillusethePIN,insteadofaserialnumber,onallpoweredmachinesaswellasElectricalPower GenerationEquipment(EPG).ThePINwillhavethesameprefixandwillcontinueinthesamesequenceas thepreviousserialnumbers.Serialnumbers(SN)willcontinuetobeusedinordertoidentifyCatlifttrucks andattachments.

ModelNumbers

AllCatmachinesdisplaythecorporatesymbolandhavemodelnumbers,whichconsistofaseriesof numbers.Thesenumbersareoftenprecededand/orfollowedbyaletterorletters.

SerialNumbers

CaterpillarproductsthatarenotdesignedforanoperatortorideandElectricalPowerGenerationEquipment (EPG)areidentifiedbyserialnumbers.Someoftheseproductsareengines,worktools,andtransmissions. Additionally,CatlifttrucksandallCatattachmentsareidentifiedbyserialnumbers.Allserialnumbersare crossreferencedtothePIN,whichcanbeidentifiedbytheserialnumber.

TheOperationandMaintenanceManualforthemachinewillshowapictureofthePINlocation.The OperationandMaintenanceManualisshippedfromthefactorywitheachmachine.TheOperationand MaintenanceManualwillnormallybelocatedintheoperator'scompartmentandwillbeattachedtothe machinewithasteellanyard.

Whenauxiliarydevices,accessoriesorconsumables(filters,oil, additives,catalysts,fuel,etc.)madebyothermanufacturersareused onCatproducts,theCaterpillarwarrantyisnotaffectedsimply becauseofsuchuse.Failuresthatresultfromtheinstallationorusage ofothermanufacturersauxiliarydevices,accessoriesorconsumables, however,arenotCaterpillarfactorydefectsandthereforeareNOT coveredbyCaterpillar'swarranty.

Caterpillarisnotinapositiontoevaluatethemanyauxiliarydevices, accessoriesorconsumablespromotedbyothermanufacturersand theireffectonCatproducts.Installationoruseofsuchitemsisatthe discretionofthecustomerwhoassumesALLrisksfortheeffectsthat resultfromthisusage.

Furthermore,Caterpillardoesnotauthorizetheuseofitstradename, trademark,orlogoinamannerwhichimpliesourendorsementof theseaftermarketproducts.

AftermarketOilAdditives

Caterpillardoesnotrecommendtheuseofaftermarketadditivesinoil.Itisnotnecessarytouseaftermarket additivesinordertoachievethemachine'smaximumservicelifeorratedperformance.Fullyformulated, finishedoilsconsistofbaseoilsandofcommercialadditivepackages.Theseadditivepackagesareblended intothebaseoilsatprecisepercentagesinordertohelpprovidefinishedoilswithperformance characteristicsthatmeetindustrystandards.

Therearenoindustrystandardteststhatevaluatetheperformanceorthecompatibilityofaftermarket additivesinfinishedoil.Aftermarketadditivesmaynotbecompatiblewiththefinishedoil'sadditive package,whichcouldlowertheperformanceofthefinishedoil.Theaftermarketadditivecouldfailtomix withthefinishedoil.Thiscouldproducesludge.Caterpillardiscouragestheuseofaftermarketadditivesin finishedoils.

ToachievethebestperformancefromCaterpillarmachines,conformtothefollowingguidelines:

•SelecttheproperCaterpillaroilorselectcommercialoilthatmeetsthespecificationsdesignatedby Caterpillarforthecompartment.

•Seetheappropriate“LubricantViscositiesforAmbientTemperatures”tableinthispublicationinorder tofindthecorrectoilviscositygradeforthemachinecompartment.

•Atthespecifiedinterval,servicetheengineorservicetheothermachinecompartments.Use appropriatenewoilandinstallanappropriatenewoilfilter.

•PerformmaintenanceattheintervalsthatarespecifiedintheOperationandMaintenanceManual, "MaintenanceIntervalSchedule".

Theserecommendationsaresubjecttochangewithoutnotice.Consult yourlocalCatdealerforthemostuptodaterecommendations.

Biodieselisarenewablefuelthatcanbemadefromvegetableoils,animalfat,andwastecookingoil. Soybeanoilandrapeseedoilaretypicallytheprimaryvegetableoilsources.Therawoilsoranimalfatsare chemicallyprocessed(esterified)toformafattyacidmethylester(referredtoasFAME).Theesterified product(FAME)isbiodieselfuelthatcanbeusedincompressionignitionengines.Withoutthechemical processingreferredtoasesterification,theoilsorfatsarenotsuitableforuseasfuelincompressionignition engines.Theoilorfatmustbeesterifiedandthewaterandcontaminantsremoved.

Fuelmadeof100percentFAMEisreferredtoasB100biodieselorneatbiodiesel.

Biodieselcanbeblendedwithdistillatedieselfuel.Theblendscanbeusedasfuel.Themostcommonly availablebiodieselblendsareB5,whichis5percentbiodieseland95percentdistillatedieselfuel,andB20, whichis20percentbiodieseland80percentdistillatedieselfuel.Thepercentagesarevolume-based.

U.S.distillatedieselfuelspecification"ASTMD975"includesuptoB5(5percent)biodiesel.Anydiesel fuelintheU.S.maycontainuptoB5biodieselfuelwithoutlabelingthatindicatesbiodieselcontent.

Europeandistillatedieselfuelspecification"EN590"includesuptoB5(5percent)biodieselandinsome regionsuptoB7(7percent)biodiesel.AnydieselfuelinEuropemaycontainuptoB5orinsomeregionsup toB7biodieselfuelwithoutlabelingthatindicatesbiodieselcontent.

BiodieselfuelthatisperCaterpillarandIndustryrecommendedspecifications(RefertoTable2inthis Chapter)offersthefollowingadvantages:

•Renewablefuel,nontoxic,andbiodegradable

•Reducestailpipeparticulatematter(PM),hydrocarbon(HC),andcarbonmonoxide(CO)emissions frommostmoderndieselengines

•Highlubricity,hencereducesfriction

•Highcetanenumber

BiodieselatB5blendlevelhasthesameattributesasdieselfuel.AtblendlevelsoverB5,biodieselhasthe followingattributesthatrequiremanagement:

•Energydensity.AtB100,biodieselhasabout8%lowerenergydensitythandieselfuel.AtB20or lowerblendlevels,theenergydensitydifferencefromdieselfuelisnotsignificant.

•Oxidationstability,storagestability,coldtemperatureproperties,andmaterialscompatibility.Someof theseattributesarecontrolledbythespecifications.

•Tendencytodissolveandabsorbwater,whichishigherthanthatofdieselfuel.

•Metalcontent.Biodieselcancontaincertainmaterialsnaturallyorduetoprocessing(phosphorus, sodium,calcium,potassium,andmagnesium).Themaximumlevelsofthesematerialsarecontrolled bytheappropriatespecifications.

•Contaminantscontentduetoincompleteesterificationorpurifyingprocess.Thesecontaminantsmay includeglycerides,monoanddiesters,sterolglucosides,andothers.

MeetingspecificationsasdetailedinthisChapterisparamountforbiodieselfuelusedinengines,toavoid performanceissuesandenginedowntime.

RefertoguidelinesgiveninthisChapterandtoTables2and4forthebiodieselfuelrequirementsand specifications.

Note:Theuseroftheenginehastheresponsibilityofusingthecorrectfuelthatisrecommendedbythe manufacturer.ThefuelmustbeallowedbytheU.S.EPAandotherappropriateregulatoryagencies.

InNorthAmerica,theuseofbiodieselfrom"BQ-9000"accredited producersand"BQ-9000"certifiedmarketersisrequired.Refertothe “Recommendations”sectionfordetails.

NOTICE

FailuresthatresultfromtheuseofanyfuelarenotCaterpillarfactory defects.Therefore,thecostofrepairwouldNOTbecoveredbythe Caterpillarwarrantyformaterialsand/orthewarrantyfor workmanship.

BiodieselblendsofuptoB5mustmeettherequirementsforthedistillatedieselfuelthatarelistedinTable 51,“CaterpillarSpecificationforDistillateDieselFuelforNonroadDieselEngines”,thelatesteditionof "ASTMD975",and/orthelatesteditionof"EN590".

Note:CaterpillarrecommendationsformostengineshavebeenchangedtoB20fromhistoricallyhigher blendlevel.Thischangewasduetothedevelopmentof"ASTMD7467"or"EN16709"specificationforB6B20,whichdefinesqualityrequirementsforB6-B20blendsofbiodiesel.Thisspecificationhelpscustomers todefinethefuelquality.RefertothedetailedrequirementsgiveninthisSection.

BiodieselblendsofB6toB20mustmeettherequirementslistedinthelatesteditionof"ASTMD7467""EN 16709"(B6toB20)andmustbeofanAPIgravityof30-45.

Thedistillatedieselfuelacceptableforblendingwithbiodieselshouldbethe“CaterpillarSpecificationfor DistillateDieselFuelforNonroadDieselEngines”tableinthe"DistillateDieselFuel"sectionofthisSpecial Publication,thelatesteditionof"ASTMD975",and/orthelatesteditionof"EN590".No.1-DandNo.2-D areexamplesoffuelsthatareacceptableforcreatingbiodieselfuel.Referto“FuelSpecifications”Chapterin thisSpecialPublicationfordetails.

ForTier4applicationsintheU.S.,thedieselfuelportionofthefinalblendmustmeettherequirementsof S15fuels(15ppmsulfur)designationsinthelatesteditionof"ASTMD975"specification.ForStageIIIB andlaterapplicationsinEU,thedieselfuelportionofthefinalblendmustmeettherequirementsforsulfur free(10ppmsulfur)designationinthelatesteditionof"EN590".Thefinalblendmusthavemaximumof15 ppmsulfur.

ImpactofBiodieselonEngineOil

Biodieselfuelhashigherdensityandlowervolatilitythandieselfuels.Asaresult,duringengineoperation, biodieselfuelthatdilutesthecrankcaseoilmaynotevaporateaseffectivelyasdieselfuels.Forthisreason, fueldilutionofcrankcaseoilsmaybehigherwhenbiodiesel,inparticularwhenhigherblendsofbiodiesel areused.

Also,biodieselcontainsoxygenmolecules.Theseoxygenmoleculescannotbedifferentiatedfromoil oxidationwhenusingcurrentoilanalysistechniques.Asaresult,biodieselfueldilutionofthecrankcaseoil canappeartobehigheroxidationoftheoil.

Whenusingbiodieselfuelandhigherfueldilutionand/orapparentoiloxidationaredetectedinthecrankcase engineoil,consideralltheothercharacteristicsoftheusedoilIfthesecharacteristics,suchaswearmetals, soot,viscosityorothers,areperCaterpillarguidelinesandhavenotreachedcondemnationlimits,thentheoil drainintervalsshouldnotbeimpacted.

Toreduceanypotentialimpactofbiodieselfueldilutiononcrankcaseoil,theuseofCatS·O·SServicesoil analysisisstronglyrecommendedwhenuptoB20(20percent)andlowerbiodieselblendsareused, andrequiredwhenusingbiodiesel/biodieselblendsthatareB20orabove.Whenrequestingoilanalysis, besuretonotethelevelofbiodieselbeingused(B5,B20,andsoon).

UseofBiodieselfuelinEngineswithAftertreatmentEmissions ControlSystems
