Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,orrenderinoperativeanyemissionrelateddeviceor elementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewiththeregulations (40CFRPart89).Certainelementsofthemachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuel system,electricalsystem,intakeairsystemandcoolingsystemmaybeemissionrelatedandshould notbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

CatProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theCatProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)willchangefrom8to17 characters.Inanefforttoprovideuniformequipmentidentification,Caterpillarandotherconstruction equipmentmanufacturersaremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentification numberingstandard.Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwill applytoallCatmachinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17 characterPIN.Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

2.MachineDescriptor(characters4-8)

3.CheckCharacter(character9)

4.MachineIndicatorSection(MIS)orProductSequenceNumber(characters10-17).Thesewere previouslyreferredtoastheSerialNumber.

MachinesandgeneratorsetsproducedbeforeFirstQuarter2001willmaintaintheir8characterPIN format.

Componentssuchasengines,transmissions,axles,etc.andworktoolswillcontinuetousean8 characterSerialNumber(S/N).

1.Starttheengine.Operatetheengineathighidle.

2.Turnfanspeedswitch(1)counterclockwisefromtheOFFpositioninordertoactivatethe airconditioner.SetthefanspeedswitchtotheIIIposition.

3.Turntemperaturecontrol(2)counterclockwiseformaximumcooling.

4.Allowtheairconditioningsystemtorunforseveralminutes.

5.Raisethehood.

Theairconditionercompressorislocatedontherightsideoftheengine.

6.Checkthesystemforrefrigerant.Checksuctionline(3)andcheckdischargeline(4). Suctionline(3)shouldbecoldanddischargeline(4)shouldbehot.Ifthesystemcontains refrigerant,thedischargelinewillbehotandthesuctionlinewillbecold.

Note:Thesuctionlinehasalargerdiameterthanthedischargeline.

Ifpoorcoolingisexperienced,turnofftheairconditioner.Stoptheengine.Poorcooling indicatesalowrefrigerantlevel.Serviceoftheairconditionershouldbedonebyyour Caterpillardealer.Forpropercooling,chargetheairconditioningsystemwithR-134a refrigerant.RefertoServiceManual,SENR5664,"AirConditioningandHeatingfor R134a".

BackupAlarm-Test

Thebackupalarmisontherearofthemachine.

TurntheenginestartswitchtotheONpositioninordertoperformthetest. Engagetheservicebrakes.MovethetransmissioncontrollevertotheRposition.

Thebackupalarmshouldstarttosoundimmediately.Thebackupalarmwillcontinuetosound untilthetransmissioncontrolleverismovedfromtheRposition.

Toadjustthevolume,turnthethree-positionswitchonthebackofthebackupalarm.Thevolume issetatthehighestlevelbeforethemachineisshippedfromthefactory.Reducethevolumeofthe backupalarmifaparticularjobsiterequiresalowersoundlevel.

Abatteryshouldnotrequiremorethan30cc(1oz)ofwaterpercellperweek.

Maintaintheelectrolyteleveltothebottomofthefilleropenings.Usedistilledwatertobringup theleveloftheelectrolyte.Theelectrolyteshouldalwaysbeabovetheplatesofthebattery.If distilledwaterisnotavailable,usecleandrinkingwater.Duringhotweather,checkthelevelof theelectrolyteweekly.

Allbatteriesmusthavethefollowingmaintenanceatevery1000hours:

1.Openthebatteryaccesscover.

2.Checkthebatteryretainers.Tightenthebatteryretainers.

3.Cleanthetopofthebatterieswithacleantowel.Donotallowdirttobuilduponthebattery. Conductivepathsmaydevelop.Underdustyconditions,cleanthetopsofthebatteriesoften.

Buildupofdirtmayleadtothefollowingelectricalproblems:

Electricalchargemaybedrainedfromthebatteries.

TheEngineMonitoringSystemmayfunctionwiththedisconnectswitchintheOFF position.

Afilmofacidmaybeonthebattery.Toneutralizetheacid,oneofthefollowingsolutions maybeused:

Bakingsodasolutionmaybemadebymixing100grams(4.0oz)with1liter(1quart) ofcleanwater.

Ammoniasolutionmaybemadebymixing100grams(4.0oz)with1liter(1quart) ofcleanwater.

Thecapsofthebatterycellsmustbeinplacebeforeusingoneoftheabovesolutions.Rinse thebatterieswithcleanwaterafterusingoneoftheabovesolutions.

4.Liftthepostcoversinordertoremovethecablefromthebatteryterminal.

5.Cleanthebatteryterminals.Afinegradeofsandpapermaybeusedforcleaning.

Petroleumjellymaybeusedasprotectionagainstcorrosion.Applycorrosioninhibitors afteryouconnectthecablestothebatterypost.Abatterysaverandcleanerisavailablefrom yourCaterpillardealer.Usetheseproductstoimprovebatteryperformance.

6.Installthecables.

7.Positionthepostcovers.

8.Closethebatteryaccesscover.

2.TurnthebatterydisconnectswitchtotheOFFposition.Removethekey.

3.Atthebatterydisconnectswitch,disconnectthenegativebatterycablethatisconnectedto theframe.

4.Disconnectthenegativebatterycablefromtheterminalsofthebattery.

5.Performthenecessaryrepairs.Replacethecableorthebattery,asneeded.

6.Connectthenegativebatterycabletotheterminalsofthebattery.

7.Connectthenegativebatterycableatthebatterydisconnectswitch.

8.Installthekeyforthebatterydisconnectswitch.TurnthekeytotheONposition.

Routinepurgingoftheservicebrakelinesensuresthatthesystemisfreeofair.Startthesequence forpurgingairfromthebrakingsystemwithadjusters(1)onthecenterandfrontaxles.Purgethe brakegroupsforthecenteraxleandpurgethebrakegroupsforthefrontaxle.

1.EnsurethattheparkingandsecondarybrakecontrolisintheENGAGEDpositionandthat thetransmissionisintheNEUTRALposition.

2.Clampaclearplastictubetopurgescrew(2)onslackadjuster(1)onthecenteraxle.Fixthe freeendoftheplastictubeintoasuitablecontainer.

3.Starttheengineandoperateatlowidle.

4.Openpurgescrew(2).Withassistancefromanotherperson,presstheservicebrakepedal lightlyuntiloildischargesfromthetube.Thisactionwillconnectthelinesfromthe accumulatortothebrakelines.

5.Closepurgescrew(2)andreleasetheservicebrakepedal.

6.Repeattheprocedurefortheslackadjusterforthefrontaxle.

1.EnsurethattheparkingandsecondarybrakecontrolisintheENGAGEDpositionandthat thetransmissionisintheNEUTRALposition.

2.Removethreeboltsonthebrakelineguardandremovethebrakelineguard.

3.Clampaclearplastictubetopurgescrew(3)oneitherbrakegroup.Fixthefreeendofthe plastictubeintoasuitablecontainer.

4.Starttheengineandoperateatlowidle.

5.Openpurgescrew(3).Withassistancefromanotherperson,presstheservicebrakepedal lightlyuntiloildischargesfromthetube.

6.Closepurgescrew(3)andreleasetheservicebrakepedal.

7.Reinstallthebrakelineguard.

8.Repeattheprocedurefortheotherthreebrakegroups.

•Lookforbrokenlensesonthegauges,brokenindicatorlights,brokenswitches,andother brokencomponentsinthecab.

•Starttheengine.

•Lookforinoperativegauges.

•Turnonallmachinelights.Checkforproperoperation.

•Soundthehorn.

•Movethemachineforwardslowlyandtesttheservicebrakes.Iftheservicebrakes malfunction,consultyourCaterpillarDealerforrepairs.

•Movethemachineforwardslowly.Movetheparkingandsecondarybrakecontroltothe ENGAGEDpositioninordertotestthesecondarybrake.Ifthesecondarybrakefailsto bringthemachinetoastop,consultyourCaterpillarDealerforrepairs.

•Stoptheengine.

BrakingSystem-Test

Personalinjurycanresultifthemachinemoveswhiletesting.

Ifthemachinebeginstomoveduringtest,reducetheenginespeed immediatelyandmovetheparkingandsecondarybrakecontroltothe ENGAGEDposition.

Makesurethattheareaaroundthemachineisclearofpersonnelandofobstacles.

Testtheservicebrakeonadry,levelsurface.

Fastenyourseatbeltbeforeyoutesttheservicebrake.

Theservicebrakeholdingabilitytestdetermineswhethertheservicebrakeisfunctional.Thistest isnotintendedtomeasurethemaximumbrakeholdingeffort.Thebrakeholdingeffortthatis requiredtoholdamachineataspecificenginerpmwillbedifferentforvariousmachines.

1.Beforeyoutesttheservicebrake,movetheparkingandsecondarybrakecontroltothe ENGAGEDposition.MovethetransmissioncontroltotheNEUTRALposition.Startthe engine.Allowtheenginetofullychargethebrakesystem.TheEMSindicatorwillno longerbeilluminatedwhenthebrakesystemisfullycharged.

2.Engagetheservicebrake.MovethetransmissioncontroltotheFIRSTSPEEDFORWARD position.MovetheparkingandsecondarybrakecontroltotheDISENGAGEDposition.

3.Graduallyincreasetheenginerpm.Theservicebrakeshouldpreventmachinemovement whentheengineisrunningat1550rpm.

4.Ifthemachinemovesreducetheenginespeedimmediatelyandmovetheparkingand secondarybrakecontroltotheENGAGEDposition.Movethetransmissioncontroltothe NEUTRALposition.Machinemovementindicatesthattheservicebrakesystemrequires service.

NOTICE

Ifthemachinemovedwhiletestingtheservicebrakes,contactyour Caterpillardealer.

Havethedealerinspectand,ifnecessary,repairtheservicebrakes beforereturningthemachinetooperation.

SecondaryBrakeCheck

Testthesecondarybrakeonadry,levelsurface.

Fastenyourseatbeltbeforeyoutestthesecondarybrake.

Thesecondarybrakeholdingabilitytestdetermineswhetherthesecondarybrakeisfunctional. Thistestisnotintendedtomeasurethemaximumbrakeholdingeffort.Thebrakeholdingeffort thatisrequiredtoholdamachineataspecificenginerpmwillbedifferentforvariousmachines.

Note:Thesecondarybrakeisfunctionalonthefrontaxleonly.

1.Beforeyoutestthesecondarybrake,movetheparkingandsecondarybrakecontroltothe ENGAGEDposition.MovethetransmissioncontroltotheNEUTRALposition.Startthe engine.Allowtheenginetofullychargethebrakesystem.TheEMSindicatorwillno longerbeilluminatedwhenthebrakesystemisfullycharged.

2.MovethetransmissioncontroltotheFIRSTSPEEDFORWARDposition.

3.Graduallyincreasetheenginerpm.Thesecondarybrakeshouldpreventmachinemovement whentheengineisrunningat1200rpm.

4.Ifthemachinemovesreducetheenginespeedimmediatelyandapplytheservicebrakes. MovethetransmissioncontroltotheNEUTRALposition.Machinemovementindicates thatthesecondarybrakesystemrequiresservice.

ParkingBrakeCheck

Thetestfortheparkingbrakemustbecarriedoutwiththeratedloadinthebody.

Testtheservicebrakesandthesecondarysteeringsystemonlevelgroundbeforeyoucarryout thisprocedure.

1.Drivethemachineontoaninclineof15%.Themachinemustbepointingdowntheincline.

2.Engagetheservicebrakesinordertostopthemachineontheincline.Theareaaroundthe machinemustbeclearofpersonnelandobstacles.

3.MovetheparkingbrakecontroltotheENGAGEDposition.Movethetransmissioncontrol totheNposition.

4.Shutofftheengine.

5.Graduallydisengagetheservicebrakes.

Ifthemachinemovedwhiletestingtheparkingbrake,inspectthe parkingbrakecomponentsforwearordamage.Repairorreplacethe wornordamagedparkingbrakecomponentsasrequiredbefore returningthemachinetoservice.

Anairfilterelementpluggedwithdustwillresultindecreased performanceandservicelifetotheairconditionerorcabheater(if equipped).

Topreventdecreasedperformance,cleantheairfilterelement,as required.

Thecabairfilterislocatedunderthewindshieldontheleftsideofthemachine.

1.Removefourthumbscrews(1).Removecover(2).

2.Removethefilterelement.Cleanthefilterelementwithpressureairorwashthefilter elementinwarmwater.Useanonsudsinghouseholddetergent.Rinsethefilterelementin cleanwaterandairdrythefilterelementthoroughly.

3.Afteryoucleanthefilterelement,inspectthefilterelement.Donotuseafilterelementwith damagedpleatsoradamagedseal.Ifthefilterelementisdamaged,replacethefilter element.

4.Reinstallthefilterelement.

5.Replacecover(2)andreinstallthumbscrews(1).

Note:Operatingconditionswillinfluencetheserviceintervalforthecabairfilterelement.Inspect thecabairfilterelementmoreofteninverydustyconditions.

Thecircuitbreakerpanelalsocontainsfuses.

Thecircuitbreakersprotecttheelectricalsystemfromdamage.Damagecanbecausedby electricaloverload.

Resetthecircuitbreakerifthecircuitbreakertrips.Pushinthebuttoninordertoresetthecircuit breaker.Iftheelectricalsystemisworkingproperly,thebuttonwillremaindepressed.Ifthe buttondoesnotremaindepressedandthecircuitbreakertripssoonafterbeingreset,checkthe appropriateelectricalcircuit.Repairtheelectricalcircuit,ifnecessary.
