BatteryInstallation

PreparingDryChargeBatteries

Onedaybeforeinstallinganewdrychargebattery,addtheelectrolytesolutiontoeachcell.

1.Filleachcelltothebottomoftheventwithelectrolytesolution.

NOTICE

Ifthebatteryisinitiallyfilledwithwaterbymistake,thebatteryis ruinedandmustbereplaced.

2.Allowthebatterytositforseveralminutestopermitthebatteryplatestoabsorbtheelectrolyte.

3.Addmake-upelectrolytesolutionuntilthelevelstabilizes.Oncethelevelstabilizes,neveraddanything butwater.

4.Installtheventcaps.

5.Removethetapecoveringtheventholeineachcap.

6.Slowlychargethebatteryonabatterychargeruntilthespecificgravityofthesolutionisatleast1.240ata temperatureof80°F(27°C).

NOTE:Iftheelectrolytesolutiontemperaturenears125°F(53°C)reducethechargingrate.Temperaturein excessof125°F(53°C)willruinthebattery.

PreparingWetChargeBatteries

Theelectrolytesolutionwasaddedbythemanufacturer.Make-upsolutionmustbewater;neveradd electrolyteoracidtoawetchargebattery.Ifnecessary,slowlychargethebatterybeforeusing.

UsingABatteryCharger

Adesirablechargingratecanbecalculatedbymultiplyingtheamp-hourratingofthebatteryby.07(7%).

BatteryMaintenance

TestingTheElectrolyteSolution

Thegeneralconditionofabatterycanbedeterminedbymeasuringthespecificgravityoftheelectrolyte solutionandadjustingthereadingto80°F(27°C).Iftheelectrolytelevelistoolowtoallowtakinga hydrometerreading,addmake-upwatertothecorrectlevelandthenchargethebattery2to4hoursbefore takingareading.

1.Insertthehydrometerintoacell.Fillthehydrometerbarrelwhileholdingitvertically.Thefloatmustnot dragonthewallofthebarrel.

2.Readthehydrometer:

1.250orabove-fullychargedbatterycell

1.250-1.225-fulltohalfchargedbatterycell

1.225-1.150-halftolowchargedbatterycell

Below1.150-deadcell

1.000-water

3.Testeachcellinthesamemanner.

MEASURINGSPECIFICGRAVITY

4.Ifthereismorethan.050(50gravitypoints)variationbetweenthehighestandlowestreading,thebattery shouldbereplaced.

5.Adjustthereadingsto80°F(27°C).

a.Forevery10F°(5.5C°)theelectrolytetemperatureisabove80°F(27°C),add.004(4gravitypoints)tothe specificgravityreading.

Example:Electrolytetemperature=100°F;38°C

Correctedtemperature=80°F;27°C

Difference:=20°F;11°C

Increments:10;5.5

20÷10=2;11÷5.5=2

2×4gravitypoints=8gravitypoints

Add8gravitypointstoyourhydrometerreadingtoobtaintheadjustedreadingat100°F.Iftheuncorrected hydrometeris1.240thecorrectedreadingwouldbe:1.240+8,or1.248

b.Forevery10F°(5.5C°)theelectrolytetemperatureisbelow80°F(27°C),subtract.004(4gravitypoints) fromthespecificgravityreading.

Example:ElectrolyteTemperature=10°F;-13°C

Correctedtemperature=80°F;27°C

Difference=70°F;40°C

Increments:10;5.5

70÷10=7;40÷5.5=7

7×4gravitypoints=28gravitypoints

Iftheuncorrectedhydrometerreadingis1.210thecorrectedreadingwouldbe1.210-28=1.182

Thecorrectedreadingisofmostimportanceduringcoldweatherwhenthehydrometerreadingisalways correctedtoalowerspecificgravityreading.Alowreadingsignifiesthebatteryhaslessavailablepowerto cranktheengineandthatboosterbatteriesmayberequired.

CheckingElectrolyteLevel

Checktheelectrolytelevelofeachcellandthegeneralconditionofthebattery.

1.Maintaintheelectrolyteleveltothebaseofeachventwell.

2.Themake-upwatermustbeoneofthefollowing(inorderofpreference):

a.Distilledwater.

b.Odorless,tastelessdrinkingwater.

c.Ironfreewater.

d.Anyavailablewater.

ReadingTheAmmeter

1.Afterstartingtheengine,theammeterindicatorshouldregistertotherightofzero,butshouldneverbe "pegged".

2.Aftertheenginehasbeenrunning,theindicatorshouldbejusttotherightofzero.

Iftheindicatoreither"pegs"totheright,orremainstotheleftofzerowithanincreaseofenginespeed,have theelectricalchargingsystemchecked.

CleaningBattery

1.Mixaweaksolutionofbakingsodaandwater.Applythesolutionwithabristlebrush.

2.Thoroughlyrinsethebatteryandbatterytraywithcleanwater.

3.Applygreasetothebatterycableclampsandterminalsandtoallthreads.

ColdWeatherBatteryMaintenance

Thefollowinginstructionsaidinobtainingmaximumperformanceincoldweather:

1.Afteraddingmake-upwater,chargethebattery.

Theaddedwaterwilldilutetheelectrolyte.Thiswilllowerthespecificgravityofthesolution,raisethe freezingpointofthesolutionandlowerthechargeofthebattery.
