Engine Valve Lash
Measure and Adjust if necessary
Observe Valve Rotation
Date Updated -11/10/2001
The procedure for measuring and adjusting valve lash and for observing valve rotation is in the Service Manual. Alternatively, contact your Caterpillar Dealer.
Cooling System
Change Coolant
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.
Steam can cause personal injury.
Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.
Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
Use cleaning solutions with care.
The machine must be level, the engine stopped, cool and the parking brake applied.

1. Remove the radiator cap slowly to relieve pressure.

2. Remove the access panel (2 bolts).

3. Remove the radiator drain plug and drain coolant into a suitable container.
4. Clean and install the drain plug.
5. Fill the system with a solution made up of 1 kg (2.2 lb) of sodium bisulfate to every 38 litres (10 gal) of water.
6. Start the engine and run for 1/2 hour.
7. Stop the engine and drain the cleaning solution.
8. Flush the system with clean water until the water runs out clean. Do not run the engine while flushing.
9. Fill the system with neutralizer. Use a commercially available neutralizer or use a solution made of 250g (0.5 lb) of sodium carbonate crystals to every 38 litres (10 gal) of water.
10. Run the engine for 10 minutes then stop the engine and drain the neutralizing solution.
11. Flush the system with clean water until the water runs clean. Do not run the engine while flushing.
12. Replace the drain plug and install the access panel.
13. Mix coolant to provide freeze protection to the lowest expected outside temperature and add coolant to the engine. Do not fill at more than 20 litres per minute (5 U.S. gallons) to avoid air locks and do not fill the system completely. Allow for the addition of 2.25 litres (2.5 quarts) of Caterpillar cooling system conditioner.
14. Start the engine and run with the radiator cap off until the coolant is warm and the level is stable. Add coolant if necessary then stop the engine and check for leaks.
15. Install the fill cap.
NOTICE
If the machine is to be stored in, or shipped to, an area with freezing temperatures, the cooling system must either be protected to the lowest expected outside temperature or drained completely.
When permanent antifreeze and water solutions are used in the cooling system, the solution should be drained and replaced every 2000 service hours or 1 year.
However, when additions of conditioner are made to the cooling system every 250 service hours or monthly, it is not necessary to drain and refill yearly. The antifreeze change period can be extended to 4000 service hours or 2 years.
Hydraulic Tank
Change Oil and Clean Suction Strainer
Filling the hydraulic system with oil whose viscosity is too high for the prevailing ambient conditions.
This can seriously affect the performance of the steering system particularly when the oil is cold. This could cause an accident.
Ensure the hydraulic tank is filled with the correct oil for the prevailing ambient conditions.

1. Remove the tank filler cap slowly to relieve pressure.

2. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the tank, open the tap and drain oil into a suitable container.
3. Close the tap and replace the plug.

4. Disconnect the suction and return pipes (1) and remove the cover assembly (2) (18 bolts).

5. Service the oil filters (see the section "Hydraulic Tank - Change Filters, Clean Strainer and Clean Breather") and flush out the filler tube (3).
6. Unscrew the suction strainer(4) and wash in clean nonflammable solvent. Similarly, wash the supplemental steer strainer(5) (if equipped). Inspect the strainers carefully for damage and obtain new ones if necessary.
7. Install new or cleaned strainers.
8. Install the cover assembly using a new gasket and connect the suction and return pipes.
9. Fill the tank with new oil.

10. Remove the priming plug, fill the suction pipe with oil and replace the plug. Clean any oil spills from the engine, exhaust and walkways.
Frozen material in the corners of the dump body can loosen in the warm shop and slide out when the dump body is raised.
Make sure all personnel are clear and there is sufficient overhead clearance before raising the dump body.
11. Start the engine, power the body fully up and down then drive slowly forward while turning the machine from lock to lock.
12. Stop the engine, apply the park brake and allow the machine to stand long enough for air bubbles to be released.
13. Check the oil level and add oil if necessary.
Air Conditioner (if equipped)
Service Fully
If handled incorrectly refrigerant is very dangerous. It can freeze skin or eye tissue on contact and if exposed to excessive heat it may decompose into phosgene gas which is lethal.
Refrigerant should not be handled by untrained personnel.
The air conditioner should be thoroughly serviced every 2000 service meter hours, at the beginning of the air conditioner operating season. This involves replacing the expansion valve and receiver/drier, changing the compressor oil, testing for leaks, pressure testing and recharging the system. A comprehensive service requires the use of special equipment. Your nearest Caterpillar Dealer can assist in providing the correct service.
Air Dryer
Change Desiccant

The air dryer desiccant cartridge will need replacing with a new or reconditioned unit whenever excessive water drains from the reservoir drain tap.
The cartridge should normally last for 2000 service meter hours or more.
