CoolingSystemSpecifications
CoolantInformation
Dieselengineoperatingtemperatureshaveincreasedtoimproveengineefficiency.Thismeans propercoolingsystemmaintenanceisespeciallyimportant.Overheating,overcooling,pitting, cavitationerosion,crackedheads,pistonseizuresandpluggedradiatorscanresultfromcooling systemfailures.Propercoolantiscritical,asisthequalityoffuelandlubricatingoil.Maintenance practicesmayneedtobere-evaluatedtoproperlymaintaintheengine'scoolingsystem.Itis importantthatthissectionbereadcarefully.
NOTICE
Neveroperateanenginewithoutathermostatinthecoolingsystem. Thethermostatmaintainstheenginecoolantattheproperoperating temperature.
Neveraddcoolantorwatertoanoverheatedengine,enginedamage canresult.Allowtheenginetocoolfirst.Fillingatover5U.S.gallon (20L)perminutecancauseairpocketsinthecoolingsystem.
DONOTuseDowtherm209Full-Fillcoolant.
Caterpillardoesnotrecommendtheuseofcoolingsystemsolutions thatareintendedtostopleaks.Useoftheseproductsmayresultin enginedamage.
Caterpillarrecommendsthatthecoolantmixturecontainaminimum of30%CaterpillarAntifreeze,orequivalent.
Thecoolingsystemshouldbeprotectedwithaminimumof3% concentrationofliquidsupplementalcoolingadditiveatalltimes, regardlessoftheconcentrationofantifreeze.
Iftheengineistobestoredin,orshippedto,anareawithfreezing temperatures,thecoolingsystemmustbeprotectedtothelowest expectedoutside(ambient)temperature.
Checkthespecificgravityofthecoolantsolutionfrequentlyincoldweathertoensureadequate freezeprotection.
CoolantMixtureforCaterpillarEngines
Properenginecoolantisacombinationofwater,antifreezeandsupplementalcoolingadditive. Eachingredientofthemixturemustmeetspecificguidelinesfortheenginecoolanttoperform properly.ThecoolantmixtureusedinCaterpillarenginesmustprovidethefollowingfunctions:
*Adequateheattransfer.
*Cavitationerosionprotection.
*Freezeandboilprotection.
*Sludgeandscaleprotection.
*Corrosionprotection.
*Compatibilitywithsystemhosesandseals.
CoolantWater
Allwateriscorrosiveatengineoperatingtemperature.Distilledordeionizedwateris recommendedbecauseoflessmineraldropoutthanhardortapwater.Tapwater,evenartificially softenedwithsalt,isnotrecommendedforuseinyourengine'scoolingsystem.
Calcium,magnesium,chloridesandsulphatesareallmineralsthatmakeupthedisolvedsolidsin thewater.Excessiveamountsofthesemineralsinhardwatercancombinewithsupplemental coolantadditives(silicatesandphosphates)toformsludgeorscaledeposits.Themineraldeposits (silicates,phosphates,calciumandmagnesium)reducetheeffectivenessofthecoolingsystem, especiallyafteranumberofheatingandcoolingcycles.Theymaycollectonhotinternalsurfaces oftheengineandcoolingsystemtoreducetheeffectivenessofthecoolingsystem.
Ifdistilledorde-ionizedwaterisNOTavailable,usewaterthatmeetstheminimumacceptable requirementsinthechart.Todetermineyourwatercharacteristics,contactthelocalwater department,agriculturalagentoranindependentlaboratrytoperformthetestingservice.

Antifreeze
Ifanengineisoperatedwithsupplementaladditivetreatedwaterandnoglycol,doNOTadd Caterpillarantifreeze.Theincreaseinsupplementaladditiveinthecoolantcouldcausedamageto thecoolingsystem.
NOTICE
Caterpillarrecommendsacoolantmixcomprisingaminimumof30% CaterpillarAntifreezewithdistilledordeionizedwater.Antifreeze concentrationshouldprovideprotectiontothelowestexpectedoutside (ambient)temperature.
Checkthespecificgravityoftheantifreezesolutionfrequentlyincold weathertoensureadequatefreezeprotection.Premixcoolantsolution toprovideprotectiontothelowestexpectedoutside(ambient) temperature.Pureundilutedantifreezewillfreezeat-23°C(-10°F).
Donotexceedacoolantmixtureof60%antifreezetowatersincea concentrationabove60%antifreezewillreducetheengine'sfreeze protection,andincreasethepossibilityofdepositformationinthe coolingsystemduetofailuretoabsorbthehigherconcentrationof supplementaladditive.
UseCaterpillarAntifreezeoranylowsilicate(ethyleneorpropyleneglycol)antifreezethatmeets ASTMD4985-89(GMSpecification6038-M)requirements.Mostcommercialantifreezesare formulatedforgasolineengineapplicationsandhavehighsilicatecontent.CaterpillarAntifreeze isformulatedwithalowsilicatecontentandthepropercoolantadditivesforheavydutydiesel engines.ItisavailablethroughyourCaterpillardealerasfollows:

Addingpureantifreezeasamakeupsolutionforcoolingsystemtop-upisanunacceptable practice.Addantifreezepremixedwithacceptablewatertothesamefreezeprotectionasyour coolingsystem.
UsetheantifreezeconcentrationcharttoassistindeterminingtheconcentrationofCaterpillar antifreezetouse.

Checkthecoolantsolutionfrequentlyincoldweatherforglycolconcentrationwiththe5P0957or 5P3514CoolantTester(forCaterpillarproducts)toensureadequatefreezeprotection.Thetesters areidenticalapartfromthetemperaturescales(°Cor°F)andgiveimmediatereadingsfor antifreeze/coolantsthatcontainethyleneorpropyleneglycol.
Ifpropyleneglycolbasedantifreezeisused,DONOTallowconcentrationgreaterthan50/50 antifreezetowatermixture.Themeasurementmustbemadewitharefractive-typetester (5P0957or5P3514CoolantTester),ratherthancommerciallyavailablehydrometer-typetesters. Thehydrometertypecanbeusedfortestingethyleneglycolbasedantifreezemixtures.
SupplementalCoolantAdditive(ConditionerorInhibitor)
Thecoolingsystemmustcontainsupplementalcoolantadditives(conditionerorinhibitor)to controlcorrosion,cavitationanddeposits.Itisalsonecessarytopreventrust,scale,pittingand/or corrosionofenginepartscontactedbycoolant.Thecoolingsystemshouldbeprotectedwitha minimumof3%concentrationatalltimes,regardlessoftheconcentrationofantifreeze.Use supplementalcoolantadditiveORanelement,(ifequipped)tomaintain3-6%concentrationinthe system.
NOTICE
Neveruseanantifreeze/watercoolantonly,inCaterpillarengines. Supplementaladditivesmustbeusedregardlessoftheantifreeze concentration.
Caterpillarorothermanufacturesproductscanbeusedasthe supplementaladditive.DonotmixCaterpillarSupplementalAdditive (conditioner)liquidorelementswiththeothercommercialproducts available;selectacoolingsystemtreatmentanduseitexclusively.
Excessiveconcentrationofsupplementalcoolantadditivecanform depositswhichmaycauseenginedamage,reducetheenginesheat transfercharacteristicsandcouldalsoacceleratewaterpumpseal wear.
Usean8T5296TestKittocheckandmonitortheSCAconcentrationforantifreeze/watercoolant mixture.TheCaterpillar8T5296TestKitchecksforconcentrationofnitratesinthecoolant solution.Note:Someothermanufacturessupplementalcoolantadditivesarephosphatebasedand the8T5296TestKitwillnotprovideaccurateresults.Caterpillarrecommendsthattheirtestkitbe usedtocheckcoolantsolutionconcentration.
IfotherthanCaterpillarproductsareusedasthesupplementaladditive,followthemanufactures recommendationforcoolingsystemtreatmentandtestevaluation.Commercialsupplemental additiveproductsmustcontainsilicatesandaminimumof70gr/U.S.gallon(1200ppm)nitrites.
Supplementalcoolantadditivemustbeaddedevery250servicehoursbetweeninitialfillandthe every300servicehourscoolingsystemmaintenanceinterval.Installasupplementalcoolant additivemaintenanceelement(ifequipped)OR.47liter(1U.S.pint/16oz)foreach75liter(19.5 gal)ofcoolingsystemcapacity,every250servicehours.
Caterpillarliquidsupplementalcoolingadditive(conditioner)isavailablethroughyourCaterpillar dealerinthefollowingquantities:


Pre-Charge
CaterpillarantifreezeDOESNOTrequiresupplementalcoolantadditiveaddedatinitialcoolant fill,howeveradditiveisrequiredonamaintenancebasis.Forsystemsequippedwithsupplemental coolantadditiveelements,thelastMAINTENANCEelementshouldnotbereplacedatFLUSH& FILLoroverhauluntilthenext250hourinterval.



AlthoughCaterpillarrecommendsaminimumconcentrationof30%antifreeze,acoolantmixture ofacceptablewaterandSupplementalCoolantadditive(SCA)canbeusedinapplicationswhere conditionsdonotrequirefreezeprotection(orwhereantifreezeisnotavailable).
AcoolantmixtureofwaterandSCAwillcool,andwillprovidesomeprotectionforengine components.Itwillnot,however,providenormalengineservicelife.Antifreeze/watermixtures providebetterperformancelifethanwater-onlycoolant.
IftheenginecoolingsystemisfilledwithwaterONLY,thesupplementalcoolantadditive (conditioner)concentrationmustbemaintainedat6to8%maximumconcentration.Checkwith supplementalcoolantadditivetestkit.
Maintenanceofthewateronlycoolantisthesameasmaintainanceoftheantifreeze/watercoolant. The8T5296TestKitcanbeusedtoevaluatetheSCAconcentrationofthewateronlycoolant withthefollowingmodificationstosteps3and5.
STEP3-Addtapwatertothevialuptothe20mlmark.
STEP5-Withthedefinedprocedure,the6to8%concentrationwillyielda20to27droprange. LessdropswillindicateunderconcentrationofSCAandmoredropswillindicateover concentration.Adjusttheconcentrationaccordinglytomaintaintheproperconcentration.
NOTE:Iftheconcentrationisgreaterthanthemaximumof8%,drainsomeofthecoolantand refillwithacceptablewater,thenretesttheconcentrationlevel.
CoolingSystemCleaning
CleanthesystemaccordingtotheMaintenanceScheduleorsoonerifthecoolantiscontaminated, iftheengineoverheatsoriffoamingisobservedintheradiator.Disregardfortheproper maintenanceofthecoolingsystemcancauseoverheatingproblemswhichcouldresultinsevere damagetotheengineanditscomponents.Iftestingandpropermaintenanceofantifreezeand/or SCAconcentrationsarenotperformedasrecommendedintheMaintenanceSchedule,thesystem drainintervalmustbeshortened.
Coolantshouldbedrained,thesystemcleanedandnewcoolantaddedbyfuelconsumption interval,every3000servicehoursortwoyears,whichevercomesfirstfortheenginebeing maintained.IfnotusingCaterpillarAntifreezeandsupplementalcoolantadditiveas recommended,thedrainintervalmustbeshortenedtoevery1500servicehoursoroneyear.
Whenthesystemisdrainedandflushed,smallparticles,undesirablechemicals,scaleandother depositformationsareremoved.Thesedepositsreducethenecessaryheattransfercharacteristics ofthecoolingsystemandacceleratewearofthewaterpumpseal.RefertotheCoolingSystem (Clean/FlushCoolant)topicintheMaintenanceSectionofthismanual.
CaterpillarCoolingSystemCleanersaredesignedtocleanthesystemofharmfulscaleand corrosion.Mineralscale,corrosionproducts,lightoilcontaminationandsludgeisdissolved. CoolingsystemcleanersareavailablefromyourCaterpillardealerinthequantitieslisted.Follow thelabeldirectionsforproperusage.

InspectMachine
1.Inspectthelightsforbrokenbulbsandlenses.Replaceifbroken.
2.Inspecttheconditionofallstepsandhandholds.Repairanydamagedstepsandhandholdsand ensuretheyareclean.
3.Inspecttheoperator'scompartmentforcleanliness,removetrashordebris.Checkforbroken gaugesorindicatorlights.Ensurethatallwindows,mirrorsandlightlensesareclean.
4.Inspectthecoolingsystemforleaksandtrashbuilduparoundtheradiatorandgrille.Checkthe conditionofradiatorhoses,thefanbeltandthecoolantpumpdrivebelt.
5.Inspecttheenginecompartmentforleaksandtrashbuildup.
6.Inspectthecabfordamage.Ifrepairisnecessary,consultyourCaterpillardealer.
7.Inspectthehydraulicsystemforleaksanddamagedhosesorfittings.
8.Inspectthetransmission,axlesandtransferdriveforleaks.
9.Inspectthetiresfordamageandensuretheyareinflatedtothecorrectpressure.Consultyour tiresupplierforcorrectinflationpressuresforyourparticularapplication.Replaceanymissing valvecaps.Havedamagedtiresinspectedandrepairedbyyourtiredealer.
10.Lookaroundandunderthemachineforitemssuchaslooseormissingbolts,trashbuildupetc.

Alwayscheckthecondit)onoftheseatbelts,seattiedownbeltsandmountinghardwarebefore operatingthemachine.Replaceanydamagedorwornparts.
Replacetheseatbeltsafterthreeyearsofuse,regardlessofappearance.
1.Checkthebeltwebbing(1)forwearorfraying.Replaceifdamaged.
2.Checkthebuckles(2)forcorrectoperation.Thebucklesshouldsnapfirmlyshutandrelease promptly.

3.Checktheoillevelonthedipstick(2).ThelevelmustbebetweentheLOWandFULLmarks onthedipstick.
4.Ifnecessary,removethefillercap(3)andaddoilthroughthefillertube.
5.Installthefillercap.

Thehydraulicoillevelmustbecheckedwiththebodyfullylowered.

TestforProperFunction
1.Checkthatallgaugesandindicatorsareintact.Replaceanywhicharebroken.
2.Soundthehorntoensureitworks.
3.Operatethehazardlightswitchandmachinelightstoensuretheywork.
4.Turnthestartswitchtoenergisetheelectricalcircuitsbutdonotstarttheengine.Checkthatthe indicatorsoperatecorrectly.
5.ShiftthetransmissiontoREVERSEandlistenfortheback-upalarm.Shiftthetransmission backtoneutral.
6.Starttheengineandcheckthatallindicatorsandgaugesoperatecorrectly.
7.Checkthattheturnsignalsoperatecorrectly.
8.Haveanyfaultyitemrepairedorreplaced.
Donotfillthefueltanktothetop.Fuelexpandsasitgetswarmand mayoverflow.
Fillthefueltankattheendofeachshifttodriveoutmoistairand preventcondensation.
Drainwaterandsedimentfromthefueltankatthebeginningoftheshiftorafterthetankhasbeen filledandallowedtostandfortenminutes.

Thefueltankislocatedontherightsideofthemachine.

1.Openthebleedvalveuntilwaterorfuelstartstoflow.
2.Allowwaterandsedimenttoflowintoasuitablecontainer.
3.Closethebleedvalve.
