1.AllowtheenginetowarmupatLOWIDLEforfiveminutes.Engageanddisengageallimplement controlstohelpspeedwarm-upofhydrauliccomponents.
2.MovetheEMStestswitchup.Thefaultalarmshouldsound.Thefaultlightsshouldcomeon.The masterfaultlightshouldflash.
3.ReleasetheEMStestswitch.Allfaultlightsandthefaultalarm,shouldgooff.Ifthelightsdonot gooff,stoptheengine.Haveanynecessaryrepairsmadebeforestartingagain.
4.Lookatthefaultlightsandgauges(ifequipped)frequentlyduringoperation.
5.Lookatthehydraulicoiltankandpowertrainoillevels.MaintaintheoillevelstotheFULLmarks.

BeforeStartingtheEngine
Walk-AroundInspection
Hotoilandcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoil orcomponentstocontactskin.
Atoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishotandunderpressure.
Steamcancausepersonalinjury.
Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthe fillcapiscoolenoughtotouchwithyourbarehand.
Removethefillcapslowlytorelievepressure.
Coolingsystemconditionercontainsalkalai.Avoidcontactwiththeskin andeyestopreventpersonalinjury.
Foryourownsafetyandmaximumservicelifeofthemachine,makeathoroughwalk-around inspectionbeforemountingthemachinetostarttheengine.
Lookaroundandunderthemachineforsuchitemsasloosebolts,trashbuild-up,oilorcoolantleaks, brokenorwornparts.Inspecttheconditionoftheimplementsandthehydrauliccomponents.

6.Inspecttheengineprecleanerscreensfordirtbuild-up.Removeanydirtordebris.
7.Inspectandrepairanyenginecompartmentleaks.Checkaroundallsealsandcovers.
8.Inspectstepsandhandholdsforconditionandcleanliness.Repairorcleanifnecessary.Inspectthe RolloverProtectiveStructure(ROPS)fordamage.SeeyourCaterpillardealerforrepairsifnecessary.
9.Inspectandrepairanyhydraulicsystemleaks.Inspecthoses,sealsandaroundflanges.
10.Inspectandrepairanyfinaldriveleaks.
11.Besurecoversandguardsarefirmlyinplace.Inspectfordamageorforlooseandmissingbolts.
12.Inspectandrepairanytransmissionleaks.Checkaroundthesealsandcovers.Also,checkthe hosesaroundthetransmission.
13.Inspectandrepairdamagedandexcessivelyworntracks.Tightenanylooseboltsandreplaceany thataremissing.
Lookforleaksbetweenthemajorandminorbogies,bogieshaftsandtherollerframes.
IfleakageexistsconsultyourCaterpillardealerforinspection,lubricationand,ifnecessary,repair instructions.
14.Inspectoperator'scompartmentforcleanlinessandremovealltrashanddirtbuild-up.
15.Inspectandrepairtheinstrumentpanelwhenbrokengaugesandlightsarefound.
16.Inspecttheseatbeltandmountingforexcessivewearanddamage.Replaceifdamaged.
17.Makesurethehorn,back-upalarm,lights,guards,shield,etc.,areinproperworkingorder.
18.Brakepedalcanbeadjustedcloserorfartherfromopertor'sseatforcomfort.SeeyourCaterpillar dealerforadjustmentprocedure.
Pre-StartChecks
1.MaintaintheengineoillevelbetweentheADDandtheFULLmarkonthedipstick.
2.Opentheleftsideaccesscover.
3.MaintainthepowertrainsystemoillevelbetweentheADDandtheFULLmarksonthedipstick.
MaintainthepivotshaftoillevelbetweentheADDandFULLmarksinthereservoir.Donotaddoil aboveFULLmarktoavoidoiloverflowasoilwarms.Checkforleaksiffrequentlylow.Closethe cover.
4.MaintainthehydraulicimplementoillevelbetweentheADDandtheFULLmarkinthesight gauge.
5.Removethecoolantfillcap.
6.Maintaintheenginecoolantabovethelowlevelplate.
7.Removethefuelfillcap.
8.MaintainthefuelleveltotheFULLmarkonthedipstick.
9.Openthefueldrainvalves.Drainmoistureandsediment,asrequired,fromthefueltank.
10.Servicetheairfilterelementswhentheyellowpistonenterstheredareaintheindicators.
11.Adjusttheseattoallowfullbrakepedaltravelwiththeoperator'sbackagainstseatback.
12.Adjustthemirrortoallowproperviewingfromtheseattoseeclosebehindthemachine.
13.Adjusttheseatbelttofitsnug.

Thepowertrainoildipstickislocatedontheleftsideofthemachinebehindtheaccesscover.
Maintaintheoilbetweenthemarksondipstick(1)atLOWIDLE.Addoilifnecessarythroughoilfill tube(2).Removeoilfillcapforaccess.
EngineCoolingSystem
LookattheCoolantLevel
Atoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishotandunderpressure. Steamcancausepersonalinjury.
Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthe fillcapiscoolenoughtotouchwithyourbarehand.
Removethefillcapslowlytorelievepressure.
Coolingsystemconditionercontainsalkali.Avoidcontactwiththeskin andeyestopreventpersonalinjury.
1.Removethecoolantfillcapslowlytorelieveanypressure.
2.Inspecttheconditionofthecapgasket.Replacethecapgasketifnecessary.
3.Maintainthecoolantabovethelowlevelplate.
4.Installtheradiatorcap.
Pressureaircancausepersonalinjury.
Whenusingpressureairforcleaning,wearaprotectivefaceshield, protectiveclothingandprotectiveshoes.
Themaximumairpressuremustbebelow205kPa(30psi)forcleaning purposes.
Compressedair,highpressurewaterorsteamcanbeusedtoremovedust,leavesandgeneraldebris fromafoldedcoreradiator.Cleanasrequiredbyconditionofradiator.
Theuseofcompressedairispreferred.
Referto"KnowYourCoolingSystem,"FormSEBD0518,forthecompleteprocedureand instructions.
HydraulicSystemOil
LookAtTheOilLevel
Atoperatingtemperature,thehydraulictankishotandunderpressure. Hotoilcancauseburns.
Removethefillcaponlywhentheengineisstopped,andthecapiscool enoughtotouchwithyourbarehand.Removethefillcapslowlyto relievepressure.
Neverremovethecapfromtheimplementhydraulictankifoilishot. Aircanentersystemandcausepumpdamage.
Thehydraulicoiltankislocatedontherightrearsideofthemachine.
AddoiltomaintaintheoilleveltotheFULLmarkinthesightgauge.
Tracks
InspectForProperAdjustment
Visuallyinspectthetracks.Checkforwearandexcessivedirtbuildupontrackcomponents.
Iftrackappearstobetootightortooloose,see"Tracks"under"Every250ServiceHoursor Monthly."
PivotShaft
Hotoilandcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoil orcomponentstocontactskin.
Maintaintheoilwithinthelimitsofthesightgauge.Overfillingcancausehotoiltooverflowthe reservoir.
Fuelleakedorspilledontohotsurfacesorelectricalcomponentscan causeafire.
Drainvalveislocatedunderthefueltank.
1.Openthedrainvalveandallowthemoistureandsedimenttodrainintoasuitablecontainer.
2.Closethedrainvalve.

CleaningWindows
Usecommerciallyavailablewindowcleaningsolutionstocleanthewindows.
Therearwindowcanbecleanedfromtheinsideofthecab.Todothisthesectionofthewindowthat slidesmustberemoved.Usetheprocedurethatfollowstoremovethatsectionoftherearwindow.
1.MovethehandlestoptotheUPpositionbyliftingathandle(1)androtatingcounterclockwiseuntil itisvertical.
2.Movethesectionofthewindowthatslides,totheopeningintheupperwindowchannel(2).
3.Tiltthetopofthewindowtowardtheinsideofthecabandremoveit.
ElectronicMonitoringSystemandGauges
TestAndInspectForBrokenIndicators
1.AllowtheenginetowarmupatLOWIDLEforfiveminutes.Tohelpspeedthewarmupof hydrauliccomponents,engageanddisengageallhydraulicimplementcontrols.
2.PushtheEMSFaultLighttestswitch.Thefaultalarmshouldsound.ThefaultlightandtheEMS panelshouldFLASH,untiltheEMStestswitchisreleased.Ifthelightsoralarmdidnotcomeon, havenecessaryrepairsmade.
FireSuppressionSystem(IfEquipped)
Check
See"FireSuppressionSystem(IfEquipped)"infrontofthisguide,fortestingtheengineshutdown system.
SeatBelt
InspectForWearOrDamage
Alwayscheckconditionofseatbeltandmountinghardwarebefore operatingmachine.Replaceanydamagedorwornparts.
Replacetheseatbeltafterthreeyearsofusage,regardlessof appearance.
Seatbeltandmountinghardwaremustbeinspectedforwearordamage.Replacethebeltormounting hardwareifwornordamaged.
Winch(IfEquipped)
LookattheOilLevel
Hotoilandcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoil orcomponentstocontactskin.
WiththeengineatLOWIDLE,theoilmustbevisibleinthesightgauge.
Ifnecessarytoaddoil,removetheoilfillplug.
Checkandrepairanyoilleaksaroundcoversorhoses.
