Operating Techniques
Dozing

Straight Dozing: If the blade digs in and the rear of the tractor rises, raise blade to continue even cut. When moving a heavy load causes travel speed to drop, shift to a lower gear and/or raise the blade up slightly.
NOTE: When doing finishing or leveling work, a full blade handles easier than a partially loaded blade.
Slot Dozing: This allows larger loads to be carried in front of the blade. It is used in stockpiling and high production bulldozing.
Tilt Dozer Ditching: Tilt blade and work with low side in ditch center. Level blade when required depth and slope are reached.

Straight Dozer Backfilling: Push at a 90° angle to ditch.
Straight Dozer Ditching: Tilt blade to cut shallow "V" ditches. For larger ditches, doze at right angles to center line of ditch. When desired depth is reached, doze length of ditch to smooth sides and bottom.
Push Loading
1. Position bulldozer cutting edge slightly above ground level.
2. Tractor should match travel speed of scraper just as contact is made.
3. Contact push block squarely. Don't allow blade or push plate to contact scraper tires. Put blade control lever in FLOAT position to allow blade to follow scraper push block.
4. Do not lift rear of scraper off the ground.
5. Upshift tractor when cut is complete to help scraper get moving.
NOTICE
Blade in float may drop. Put blade control lever in a slight raise position before leaving scraper.
Follow advice of the Caterpillar dealer's sales department on use of tandem pushing.
In the wrong soil conditions, the tremendous available power could cause very extensive damage to the bowl or shank of the vehicle being pushed.
Equip the tractors properly for tandem pushing.
Adjustable Ripper
The angle of the shank can be varied, while ripping, to achieve maximum performance throughout each ripping pass.
To insert the ripper into the material to be ripped, adjust the angle of the shank beyond vertical position to give the correct tip angle for easy entry into the material. Angle will differ depending upon material being ripped.
Lower ripper into the material while moving forward. When desired ripping depth is reached, move the tip forward to obtain the correct angle for best performance. This is usually between vertical and forward positions of shank.
Shallow ripping is recommended when material is to be removed by a scraper or loader.
Deep ripping is recommended when material is to be removed by an excavator.
Use the proper shank hole to provide required clearance between the ground and the beam. The shank may be positioned for shallow ripping as well as deep ripping.
Ripping
Use FIRST speed for most ripping operations. It is better to use additional shanks, where practical, rather than to increase speed.
Use part throttle to control track slippage in rock.
Always use center shank when ripping with one shank. If material breaks up satisfactorily, more shanks may be used.
Cross rip only when necessary to get satisfactory fracture.
When ripping for scraper loading, rip in same direction that scrapers will load.
NOTE: Rip downhill whenever possible.
NOTICE
Do not turn or back tractor while shanks are in the ground. Twisting strain on the shanks and tips may cause failure.
Inspect ripper tips and shank protectors frequently, for excessive wear.
Rip as deeply as possible in 1st gear. Do not raise ripper and rip in 2nd gear.
Keep several inches of material on top of the unripped formation to cushion the machine and provide traction.
When final material size must be relatively small, close spaced passes are recommended.
Packed Soil, Hard Pan, Clay, Shale or Cemented Gravel
Three shanks work well in these materials. Use as many shanks as possible to break material to desired size, without stalling or hanging up the machine.
Rock with Fractures, Faults and Planes of Weakness
Use two shanks where rock breaks out in small pieces, and the machine can handle the job easily. When machine begins to stall or tracks start to spin, use only the center shank.
Use one shank in tough-to-rip material, or in material that tends to break out in large slabs or pieces.
Always use center shank when one-shank ripping.

Operating Adjustments
Bulldozer Blade Tilt and Tip
To tilt blade:
1. To lower LEFT side - Pull tilt lever toward operator.
2. To lower RIGHT side - Push tilt lever away from operator.

3. If additional tilt is required the left brace may be adjusted. Shorten brace to make left side of blade lower. Lengthen brace to make left side of blade higher.
NOTE: Lever will return to HOLD when released.
To tip blade:
1. Lengthen brace and extend hydraulic cylinder to tip blade forward.
2. Shorten brace and hydraulic cylinder to tip blade back.
NOTE: If tilt brace length needs alteration, counterclockwise rotation of the handle will lengthen brace, and clockwise rotation will shorten brace.
Track NOTICE
If track is too tight, wear of track components is accelerated. If track appears too tight, have track adjusted. See the D10 TRACK TYPE TRACTOR LUBRICATION and MAINTENANCE GUIDE for adjustment procedure.
Ripper Tips and Shank Protector
Have ripper tips and shank protector replaced before wear on the ripper shank occurs.
NOTICE
Tracks should be adjusted under the same conditions that the machine will be used. That is, if packing conditions prevail on the job, the tracks should be adjusted with the packing present.
Cutting Edges and End Bits
Have cutting edges and end bits replaced, or reversed, before wear on the dozer blade base occurs.

Parking The Machine
Stopping the Tractor

1. Stop tractor on level ground. Push governor control forward slightly to reduce engine speed.
NOTE: Do not move governor control lever to low idle. Engine and power train components will cool best with engine at high idle, with no load.
2. Move transmission control lever to NEUTRAL.
3. Push TRANSMISSION CONTROL LOCK/PARKING BRAKE LOCK LEVER DOWN to lock transmission lever in NEUTRAL and apply parking brake.
4. Lower all raised equipment to ground. Apply slight down pressure.
Stopping the Engine
1. Operate at reduced load for 5 minutes.
NOTICE
Damage to turbocharger may result if engine is stopped without allowing it to cool.
2. Stop tractor and push governor control lever to low idle (detent position) for 30 seconds.
3. Push governor control past detent, to stop engine.
NOTE: The audible alarm should sound momentarily. The indicator may flash (come on and off) momentarily.
The fuel pressure indicator light will come on until disconnect switch is turned OFF.
4. After engine stops, turn disconnect switch to OFF and remove key.

Moving The Machine

1. Raise lowered equipment just enough to clear obstacles.
2. Depress brake pedal.

3. Pull up on lever to unlock transmission in NEUTRAL and to disengage parking brake.
4. Move transmission control lever to desired direction and speed.
2. Move transmission lever to NEUTRAL.
3. Push brake pedal.
4. Shift transmission to desired direction and speed.
5. Release brake pedal.
6. Increase engine speed by releasing decelerator pedal, or pulling back on governor lever.
Normal Steering
Gradual RIGHT turn - Release right steering clutch by pulling lever toward detent.
Gradual LEFT turn - Release left steering clutch by pulling lever toward detent.
Sharp RIGHT turn - Release right steering clutch and apply right brake by pulling lever past detent, back to "stop".
Sharp LEFT turn - Release left steering clutch and apply left brake by pulling lever past detent, back to "stop".
Keep tractor under control at all times. DO NOT NEUTRALIZE TRANSMISSION to allow machine to coast.
Select gear range necessary before starting downgrade. DO NOT change gears while going downhill.
DO NOT ALLOW ENGINE TO OVERSPEED DOWNHILL. Use foot pedal brakes to reduce engine overspeed on downhill.
