Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)liststhe itemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelistedunderthe "WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepagenumberforthestep-bystepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.UsetheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule asanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenientservicing schedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedserviceshouldalwaysbe performedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500servicehoursor 3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery10service hoursordaily.

CaliforniaProposition65Warning

DieselengineexhaustandsomeofitsconstituentsareknowntotheStateofCaliforniatocausecancer,birth defects,andotherreproductiveharm.

Batteryposts,terminalsandrelatedaccessoriescontainleadandleadcompounds.Washhandsafter handling.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairisessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperatingcorrectly.As theheavydutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceoftherequired maintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,andServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,ortrading enginesormachinestoremove,alter,orrenderinoperativeanyemissionrelateddeviceorelementofdesign installedonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewiththeregulations(40CFRPart89).Certain elementsofthemachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeair systemandcoolingsystemmaybeemissionrelatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadverselyaffect performancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchasbrakes,steering, androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurtherinformation.

CatProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theCatProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Inanefforttoprovideuniformequipmentidentification,Caterpillarandotherconstruction equipmentmanufacturersaremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentification numberingstandard.Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplyto allCatmachinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN. Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

1.Caterpillar'sWorldManufacturingCode(characters1-3)

2.MachineDescriptor(characters4-8)

3.CheckCharacter(character9)

4.MachineIndicatorSection(MIS)orProductSequenceNumber(characters10-17).Thesewerepreviously referredtoastheSerialNumber.

MachinesandgeneratorsetsproducedbeforeFirstQuarter2001willmaintaintheir8characterPINformat.

Componentssuchasengines,transmissions,axles,etc.andworktoolswillcontinuetousean8character SerialNumber(S/N).

4.Useashoveloruseawaterhoseinordertocleanthesolidballastthroughtheoutletopeningofthe ballastcompartment.

5.Installtheoutletcover.

6.Installthesolidorliquidballastintheballastcompartmentsinordertomaintainproperbalanceofthe machine.

7.Installtheplatformcovers.

Alwayswearprotectiveglasseswhenworkingwithbatteries.

1.TurntheenginestartswitchkeytotheOFFposition.TurnalloftheswitchestotheOFFposition.

2.TurnthebatterydisconnectswitchtotheOFFposition.Removethekey.

3.Disconnectthenegativebatterycableatthebattery.

4.Disconnectthepositivebatterycableatthebattery.

5.Disconnectthebatterycablesatthebatterydisconnectswitch.Thebatterydisconnectswitchis connectedtothemachineframe.

6.Makenecessaryrepairsorreplacethebattery.

7.Connectthebatterycableatthebatterydisconnectswitch.

Belts-Inspect/Adjust/Replace

Yourenginecanbeequippedwithafandrivebeltandwithaccessorydrivebelts.Yourenginecanalsobe equippedwithanalternatorbelt.Formaximumengineperformanceandmaximumutilizationofyourengine, inspectthebeltsforwearandforcracking.Checkthebelttension.Adjustthebelttensioninorderto minimizebeltslippage.Beltslippagewilldecreasethebeltlife.Beltslippagewillalsocausepoor performanceofthealternatorandofanydrivenequipment.

Ifnewbeltsareinstalled,recheckthebeltadjustmentafter30minutesofoperation.Iftwobeltsormoreare requiredforanapplication,replacethebeltsinbeltsets.Ifonlyonebeltofamatchedsetisreplaced,thenew beltwillcarrymoreload.Thisisbecausetheolderbeltsarestretched.Theadditionalloadonthenewbelt couldcausethenewbelttobreak.

AlternatorBelt

1.Stoptheengine.

2.Opentheenginecompartment.

3.Tocheckthebelttension,apply110N(25lb)offorcemidwaybetweenthepulleys.Correctlyadjusted beltswilldeflect14to20mm(1/2to3/4inch).

4.Inordertoadjustthealternatorbelt,loosenthealternatoradjustingbracketboltandthemounting bracketbolt.

5.Toachievethecorrectbelttension,movethealternatorinwardormovethealternatoroutward,as required.

6.Ifnecessary,useaprybartobearagainstthealternatorbracket.

7.Tightenthemountingbracketboltandthealternatoradjustingbracketbolt.

8.Ifnewbeltsareinstalled,checkthebeltadjustmentagainafter30minutesofengineoperationatthe ratedspeed.

9.Checkthepositionofthefanshroud.Adjustthepositionofthefanshroudsothatthefanwillnotrub againsttheshroud.Maintaina9.4mm(0.38inch)clearancebetweenthefanandtheshroud.

BrakingSystem-Test

ParkingBrakeHoldingAbilityTest

Note:Ifthemachineconfigurationchanges,theparkingbrakesneedtobetested.

Checktheareaaroundthemachine.Makesurethatthemachineisclearofpersonnelandclearofobstacles.

Fastentheseatbeltbeforecheckingtheparkingbrake.

Thefollowingtestsareusedtodetermineiftheparkingbrakeisfunctionalonaspecifiedgradeoraspecified slope.Thesetestsarenotintendedtomeasurethemaximumbrakeholdingeffort.Readallofthestepsbefore youperformthefollowingprocedure.

Positionthemachineontheinclineoftheslope,butnearthebaseoftheslopeinordertochecktheparking brake.Thetestpositionshouldbe26percentora15degreeslope.

1.Starttheengine.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"EngineStarting"forinformationon startingtheengine.

2.Movethemachineintothetestposition.

3.PlacethethrottlecontrolintotheLOWIDLEposition.

4.Engagetheparkingbrake.

Themachineshouldnotmoveunderthefollowingconditions.

Theengineisatlowidle.

Theparkingbrakeisapplied.

Themachineispositionedonthespecifiedslope.

Personalinjurycanresultifthemachinemoveswhiletesting.

Ifthemachinebeginstomove,placethethrottlecontrolinHIGHIDLE, releasetheparkingbrakeandusethepropelleverinordertomovethe machinetoalevelsurface.

5.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface.

6.Stoptheengine.

NOTICE

Ifthemachinemovedduringthebraketest,consultyourCaterpillar dealer.

Thedealermustinspectthebrakesystemandmakeanynecessary repairsbeforethemachineisreturnedtooperation.

CoolingSystemCoolant(ELC)-Change

Drainthecoolantwheneverthecoolantisdirty.Drainthecoolantwhenfoamisobserved.

1.Stoptheengine.Allowthecoolingsystemtocoolcompletely.

2.Opentheenginecompartment.

Personalinjurycanresultfromhotcoolant,steamandalkali.

Atoperatingtemperature,enginecoolantishotandunderpressure. Theradiatorandalllinestoheatersortheenginecontainhotcoolantor steam.Anycontactcancausesevereburns.

Removecoolingsystempressurecapslowlytorelievepressureonly whenengineisstoppedandcoolingsystempressurecapiscoolenough totouchwithyourbarehand.

Donotattempttotightenhoseconnectionswhenthecoolantishot,the hosecancomeoffcausingburns.

CoolingSystemCoolantAdditivecontainsalkali.Avoidcontactwith skinandeyes.

3.Slowlyloosencoolingsystemcap(1)ontheshunttank.Slowlyremovecoolingsystemcap(1).

NOTICE

Caremustbetakentoensurethatfluidsarecontainedduring performanceofinspection,maintenance,testing,adjusting,andrepair oftheproduct.Bepreparedtocollectthefluidwithsuitablecontainers beforeopeninganycompartmentordisassemblinganycomponent containingfluids.

RefertoSpecialPublication,NENG2500,"DealerServiceTool Catalog"fortoolsandsuppliessuitabletocollectandcontainfluidson Catproducts.

Disposeofallfluidsaccordingtolocalregulationsandmandates.

4.Opencoolingsystemdrain(2).Allowthecoolanttodrainintoasuitablecontainer.

5.Closedrain(2).Filltheradiatorwithasolutionwhichconsistsofcleanwaterandofcoolingsystem cleaner.Oncetheradiatorisfilled,fillthecoolingsystemexpansiontanktothefullline.The concentrationofthecoolingsystemcleanerinthesolutionshouldbebetween6percentand10 percent.

6.Starttheengine.Runtheenginefor90minutes.

7.Stoptheengine.Allowthecoolingsystemtocoolcompletely.Opendrain(2).Drainthecleaning solutionintoasuitablecontainer.

8.Whiletheengineisstopped,flushthesystemwithwater.Flushthesystemuntilthedrainingwateris transparent.

9.Closedrain(2).

NOTICE

MixingExtendedLifeCoolant(ELC)withotherproductsreducesthe effectivenessofthecoolantandshortenscoolantlife.Useonly Caterpillarproductsorcommercialproductsthathavepassedthe CaterpillarEC-1specificationsforpremixedorconcentratecoolants. UseonlyCaterpillarExtenderwithCaterpillarELC.Failuretofollow theserecommendationscouldresultinthedamagetocoolingsystems components.

IfELCcoolingsystemcontaminationoccurs,refertoOperationand Maintenance,"ExtendedLifeCoolant(ELC)"underthetopicELC CoolingSystemContamination.

10.Addthecoolantsolution.Seethefollowingtopics:

Note:IfyouareusingCaterpillarantifreeze,donotaddthesupplementalcoolantadditiveatthistime and/orchangetheelementatthistime.

11.Addcoolanttotheshunttankuntilthecoolantisbetweentheminandmaxlines.

12.Starttheengine.Runtheenginewithoutcoolingsystemcap(1)untilthethermostatopensandthe coolantlevelstabilizes.

Note:Ifthemachineisequippedwithacabheater,thetemperaturecontrolmustbeturnedtothehot positionwhentheengineisrunning.Turningthetemperaturecontroltothehotpositionwillensure thatthelinesandthecorearefullofcoolant.

13.Maintainthelevelofthecoolanttothetopoftheradiatorandtothefulllineontheexpansiontank.

14.Replacecoolingsystemcap(1)ifthegasketisdamaged.Installcoolingsystemcap(1).

16.Closetheenginecompartment.
