Operation

Theoperationsectionisareferenceforthenewoperatorandarefresherfortheexperiencedoperator.This sectionincludesadiscussionofgauges,switches,machinecontrols,attachmentcontrols,transportationand towinginformation.

Photographsandillustrationsguidetheoperatorthroughcorrectproceduresofchecking,starting,operating andstoppingthemachine.

Operatingtechniquesoutlinedinthispublicationarebasic.Skillandtechniquesdevelopastheoperatorgains knowledgeofthemachineanditscapabilities.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)liststhe itemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelistedunderthe "WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepagenumberforthestep-bystepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.UsetheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule asanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenientservicing schedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedserviceshouldalwaysbe performedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500servicehoursor 3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery10service hoursordaily.

CaliforniaProposition65Warning

DieselengineexhaustandsomeofitsconstituentsareknowntotheStateofCaliforniatocausecancer,birth defects,andotherreproductiveharm.

Batteryposts,terminalsandrelatedaccessoriescontainleadandleadcompounds.Washhandsafter handling.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairisessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperatingcorrectly.As theheavydutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceoftherequired maintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,andServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,ortrading enginesormachinestoremove,alter,orrenderinoperativeanyemissionrelateddeviceorelementofdesign

installedonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewiththeregulations(40CFRPart89).Certain elementsofthemachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeair systemandcoolingsystemmaybeemissionrelatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadverselyaffect performancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchasbrakes,steering, androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurtherinformation.

CatProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theCatProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Inanefforttoprovideuniformequipmentidentification,Caterpillarandotherconstruction equipmentmanufacturersaremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentification numberingstandard.Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplyto allCatmachinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN. Componentssuchasengines,transmissions,axles,etc.andworktoolswillcontinuetousean8character SerialNumber(S/N).

1.Applyabout6goflubricanttofitting(1).

2.Rotatethebearing30to45degreesandapplythespecifiedamountoflubricant.

3.RepeatStep2untilthebearinghasbeenrotatedatleast315degrees. Atotalofabout50goflubricantshouldbeappliedtothebearingduringeachre-lubrication.

Therearetwobackupalarmsonthemachine.Thereisonebackupalarmontherearofthe machine,andonebackupalarmonthefrontofthemachine.

TurntheenginestartswitchtotheONpositiontoperformthetest. Applytheparkingbrake.MovethepropelcontrollevertotheREVERSEposition.

Thebackupalarmshouldstarttosoundimmediately.Thebackupalarmwillcontinuetosound untilthetransmissioncontrolleverismovedtotheSTOPpositionortotheFORWARDposition.

Inspecttheconditionoftheserpentinebelt.Overtimethebeltribswilllosematerial(C).The spacebetweentheribswillincrease(D).Thelossofmaterialwillcausethepulleysheaveto

contactthebeltvalley.Thiswillleadtobeltslippageandacceleratedwear(E).Replacethebeltif thebeltiswornorfrayed.

Replace

1.Insertaratchetwithasquaredriveintothesquareholethatislocatedinbelttensioner(1).

2.Rotatebelttensioner(2)clockwisetorelievetensiononthebelt.

3.Removebelt(1).

4.Installthenewbelt.

5.Rotatebelttensioner(2)counterclockwisetoapplytensiontobelt(1).Thecorrecttension willautomaticallybeapplied.

6.Besurebelt(1)isfullyseatedonthepulleys.

Checktheareaaroundthemachine.Makesurethatthemachineisclearofpersonnelandclearof obstacles.

Fastentheseatbeltbeforecheckingtheparkingbrake.

Thefollowingtestsareusedtodetermineiftheparkingbrakeisfunctionalonaspecifiedgradeor aspecifiedslope.Thesetestsarenotintendedtomeasurethemaximumbrakeholdingeffort.Read allthestepsbeforeyouperformthefollowingprocedure.

Positionthemachineontheinclineoftheslope,butnearthebaseoftheslopetochecktheparking brake.Thetestpositionshouldbe20percentoran11degreeslope.

1.Starttheengine.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"EngineStarting"for informationonstartingtheengine.

2.Movethemachineintothetestposition.

3.PlacethethrottlecontrolintotheLOWIDLEposition.

4.Engagetheparkingbrake.

Themachineshouldnotmoveunderthefollowingconditions.

Theengineisatlowidle.

Theparkingbrakeisapplied.

Themachineispositionedonthespecifiedslope.

Personalinjurycanresultifthemachinemoveswhiletesting.

Ifthemachinebeginstomove,placethethrottlecontrolinHIGHIDLE, releasetheparkingbrakeandusethepropelleverinordertomovethe machinetoalevelsurface.

5.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface.

6.Stoptheengine.

NOTICE

Ifthemachinemovedduringthebraketest,consultyourCaterpillar dealer.

Thedealermustinspectthebrakesystemandmakeanynecessary repairsbeforethemachineisreturnedtooperation.
