Maintenance
Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)lists theitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelisted underthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepage numberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.Usethe MaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.
MaintenanceIntervals
Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsifthecalendarintervalsprovide moreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading. Performtherecommendedserviceattheintervalthatoccursfirst.
Undersevere,dusty,orwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.
Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500service hoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery 10servicehoursordaily.
CertifiedEngineMaintenance
Propermaintenanceandrepairareessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavy-dutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceof therequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,and ServiceManual.
Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,ortorenderinoperative,anyemission-relateddeviceor elementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewithallapplicable regulationsoftheintendedcountrytowhichithasbeenshipped.Certainelementsofthemachineand enginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeairsystem,andcooling systemmaybeemission-relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.
MachineCapacity
Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadversely affectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchas brakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurther information.
ProductIdentificationNumber
EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Toprovideuniformequipmentidentification,constructionequipmentmanufacturersare movingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentificationnumberingstandard.Non-road machinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplytoallmachinesand generatorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN.Thenewformat willlooklikethefollowing:

Yourengineisequippedwithonebeltthatoperatesthealternatorandthewaterpump,andanother beltthatoperatestheairpump.Formaximumengineperformanceandmaximumutilizationof yourengine,inspectthebeltsforwearandforcracking.Checkthetensionofthebelts.Adjustthe tensionofthebeltsinordertominimizebeltslippage.Beltslippagewilldecreasethebeltlife. Beltslippagewillalsocausepoorperformance.
AlternatorBeltandWaterPumpBelt
1.Parkthemachineandstoptheengine.
2.Opentheenginecompartment.
3.Removethefanguardinordertogainaccesstothebelt.
4.Tocheckthebelttension,apply110N(25lb)offorcemidwaybetweenthepulleys. Correctlyadjustedbeltswilldeflect13to19mm(1/2to3/4inch).
5.Inordertoadjustbelt(3),loosenmountingbolts(1)and(2).
6.Toachievethecorrectadjustment,movethealternatorinwardormovethealternator outward,asrequired.
7.Tightenmountingbolts(1)and(2).
Note:Thealternatorshaftnutmustbetightenedtoatorqueof50±5N·m(37±4lbft).
8.Ifanewbeltisinstalled,checkthebeltadjustmentagainafter30minutesofengine operationattheratedspeed.Adjustthebelttensionagainifthetensionhaschanged.
9.Installthefanguard.
10.Closetheenginecompartment.
AirPumpBelt
1.Parkthemachineandstoptheengine.
2.Opentheenginecompartment.
3.Removethefanguardinordertogainaccesstothebelt.

Thefollowingtestsareusedtodetermineiftheparkingbrakeisfunctionalonaspecifiedgradeor aspecifiedslope.Thesetestsarenotintendedtomeasurethemaximumbrakeholdingeffort.Read allofthestepsbeforeyouperformthefollowingprocedure.
Positionthemachineontheinclineoftheslope,butnearthebaseoftheslopeinordertocheck theparkingbrake.Thetestpositionshouldbe26percentora15degreeslope.
1.Starttheengine.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"EngineStarting"for informationonstartingtheengine.
2.Movethemachineintothetestposition.
3.PlacethethrottlecontrolintotheLOWIDLEposition.
4.Engagetheparkingbrake.
Themachineshouldnotmoveunderthefollowingconditions.
Theengineisatlowidle.
Theparkingbrakeisapplied.
Themachineispositionedonthespecifiedslope.
Personalinjurycanresultifthemachinemoveswhiletesting.
Ifthemachinebeginstomove,releasetheparkingbrakeandusethe propelleverinordertomovethemachinetoalevelsurface.
5.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface.
6.Stoptheengine.
NOTICE
Ifthemachinemovedduringthebraketest,consultyourCaterpillar dealer.
Thedealermustinspectthebrakesystemandmakeanynecessary repairsbeforethemachineisreturnedtooperation.

13.Opentheenginecompartment.
14.Removethecoolingsystempressurecap.
15.Opentheradiatordrainvalve.Drainthecleaningsolution.
16.Flushthecoolingsystemwithwateruntilthedrainingwateristransparent.
17.Closetheradiatordrainvalve.
18.Addtherecommendedamountofextendertothecoolantsystem.RefertoOperationand MaintenanceManual,"Capacities(Refill)"fortheproperamount.
Note:IfyouareusingCaterpillarLongLifeCoolantthatcontainssomeadditive,donotadd anysupplementalcoolantadditiveatthistime.Also,donotchangethecoolantconditioner elementifyouareusingCaterpillarLongLifeCoolantthatcontainssomeadditive.
19.Starttheengineandruntheengine.Leavethecapoffuntilthethermostatopensandthe coolantlevelstabilizes.
20.Maintainthecoolantlevelbetweentheindicatedlinesontheshunttank.
21.Inspectthegasketonthecoolingsystempressurecap.Replacethecoolingsystempressure capifthegasketisdamaged.
22.Installthecoolingsystempressurecap.
23.Closetheenginecompartment.
