Maintenance
Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoenginecare.Theillustrated,step-by-stepinstructionsaregroupedby fuelconsumption,servicehoursand/orcalendartimemaintenanceintervals.Itemsinthemaintenance schedulearereferencedtodetailedinstructionsthatfollow.
Usefuelconsumptionorservicehourstodetermineintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,annually,etc.) maybeusedinsteadofservicemeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenientschedulesandapproximate theindicatedservicemeterreading.
RecommendedserviceshouldbeperformedattheappropriateintervalsasindicatedintheMaintenance IntervalSchedule.TheactualoperatingenvironmentoftheenginealsogovernstheMaintenanceInterval Schedule.Therefore,underextremelysevere,dusty,wetorfreezingcoldoperatingconditions,morefrequent lubricationandmaintenancethanisspecifiedintheMaintenanceIntervalSchedulemaybenecessary.
Themaintenancescheduleitemsareorganizedforapreventivemaintenancemanagementprogram.Ifthe preventivemaintenanceprogramisfollowed,aperiodictune-upisnotrequired.Theimplementationofa preventivemaintenancemanagementprogramshouldminimizeoperatingcoststhroughcostavoidances resultingfromreductionsinunscheduleddowntimeandfailures.
MaintenanceIntervals
Performmaintenanceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Eachleveland/orindividualitemsin eachlevelshouldbeshiftedaheadorbackdependinguponyourspecificmaintenancepractices,operation andapplication.Werecommendthatthemaintenanceschedulesbereproducedanddisplayedneartheengine asaconvenientreminder.Wealsorecommendthatamaintenancerecordbemaintainedaspartofthe engine'spermanentrecord.

3.Plugbothendsoftheaftercoolercoreandpressurizethecoreto205kPa(30psi).Submerge thecoreinwater.Lookforbubbleswhicharebeingemittedfromthecore.Thebubblesare evidenceofleaks.
4.Ifanyleaksarefound,donotattempttorepairthecore.

Caterpillarrecommendsascheduledinspectionofthealternator.Inspectthealternatorforloose connectionsandproperbatterycharging.Inspecttheammeter(ifequipped)duringengine operationinordertoensureproperbatteryperformanceand/orproperperformanceofthe electricalsystem.Makerepairs,asrequired.
Checkthealternatorandthebatterychargerforproperoperation.Ifthebatteriesareproperly charged,theammeterreadingshouldbeverynearzero.Allbatteriesshouldbekeptcharged.The batteriesshouldbekeptwarmbecausetemperatureaffectsthecrankingpower.Ifthebatteryistoo cold,thebatterywillnotcranktheengine.Thebatterywillnotcranktheengine,evenifthe engineiswarm.Whentheengineisnotrunforlongperiodsoftimeoriftheengineisrunfor shortperiods,thebatteriesmaynotfullycharge.Abatterywithalowchargewillfreezemore easilythanabatterywithafullcharge.

Tocheckthebelttension,apply110N(25lb)offorcemidwaybetweenthepulleys.Acorrectly adjustedbeltwilldeflect13to19mm(0.50to0.75inch).
Slippageofloosebeltscanreducetheefficiencyofthedrivencomponents.Vibrationofloose beltscancauseunnecessarywearonthefollowingcomponents:
•Belts

Ifthebeltsaretootight,unnecessarystressisplacedonthecomponents.Thisreducestheservice lifeofthecomponents.
Replacement
Forapplicationsthatrequiremultipledrivebelts,replacethedrivebeltsinmatchedsets. Replacingonedrivebeltofamatchedsetwillcausethenewdrivebelttocarrymoreloadbecause theolderdrivebeltsarestretched.Theadditionalloadonthenewdrivebeltcouldcausethenew drivebelttofail.

PressurizedSystem:Hotcoolantcancauseseriousburns.Toopenthe coolingsystemfillercap,stoptheengineandwaituntilthecooling systemcomponentsarecool.Loosenthecoolingsystempressurecap slowlyinordertorelievethepressure.
1.Stoptheengineandallowtheenginetocool.Loosenthecoolingsystemfillercapslowlyin ordertorelieveanypressure.Removethecoolingsystemfillercap.
2.Openthecoolingsystemdrainvalve(ifequipped).Ifthecoolingsystemisnotequipped withadrainvalve,removeoneofthedrainplugs.
Allowthecoolanttodrain.
NOTICE
Disposeofusedenginecoolantproperlyorrecycle.Variousmethods havebeenproposedtoreclaimusedcoolantforreuseinenginecooling systems.Thefulldistillationprocedureistheonlymethodacceptable byCaterpillartoreclaimtheusedcoolant.

3.FillthecoolingsystemwithamixtureofcleanwaterandCaterpillarFastActingCooling SystemCleaner.Add0.5L(1pint)ofcleanerper15L(4USgal)ofthecoolingsystem capacity.Installthecoolingsystemfillercap.
4.Starttheengineandruntheengineatlowidleforaminimumof30minutes.Thecoolant temperatureshouldbeatleast82°C(180°F).
NOTICE
Improperorincompleterinsingofthecoolingsystemcanresultin damagetocopperandothermetalcomponents.
Toavoiddamagetothecoolingsystem,makesuretocompletelyflush thecoolingsystemwithclearwater.Continuetoflushthesystemuntil allsignsofthecleaningagentaregone.
5.Stoptheengineandallowtheenginetocool.Loosenthecoolingsystemfillercapslowlyin ordertorelieveanypressure.Removethecoolingsystemfillercap.Openthedrainvalve(if equipped)orremovethecoolingsystemdrainplugs.Allowthewatertodrain.Flushthe coolingsystemwithcleanwater.Closethedrainvalve(ifequipped).Cleanthedrainplugs. 2.Starttheengineandruntheengineatlowidle.Increasetheenginerpmtohighidle.Runthe engineathighidleforoneminuteinordertopurgetheairfromthecavitiesoftheengine block.Returntheenginetolowidle.Stoptheengine.
3.Addcoolanttothecoolingsystemuntilthecoolingsystemisfull.
4.Cleanthecoolingsystemfillercap.Inspectthegasketthatisonthecoolingsystemfiller cap.Ifthegasketthatisonthecoolingsystemfillercapisdamaged,discardtheoldcooling systemfillercapandinstallanewcoolingsystemfillercap.Ifthegasketthatisonthe coolingsystemfillercapisnotdamaged,performapressuretest.A9S-8140Pressurizing Pumpisusedtoperformthepressuretest.Thecorrectpressureforthecoolingsystemfiller
capisstampedonthefaceofthecoolingsystemfillercap.Ifthecoolingsystemfillercap doesnotretainthecorrectpressure,installanewcoolingsystemfillercap.

5.Loosenthecapforthecoolantrecoverytankslowlyinordertorelieveanypressure. Removethecapforthecoolantrecoverytank.
6.Pourcoolantintothecoolantrecoverytankuntilthecoolantreachesthe"COLDFULL" mark.DONOTfillthecoolantrecoverytankabovethe"COLDFULL"mark.
Note:Pleasurecraftthatarecooledbyaheatexchangermayrequirethecoolantrecovery tanktobeoverfilledapproximately102mm(4inch)abovetheCODEFULLmark.
7.Cleanthecapforthecoolantrecoverytank.Installthecapforthecoolantrecoverytank.
8.Starttheengine.Inspectthecoolingsystemforleaksandforproperoperatingtemperature.
9.Stoptheengineandallowtheenginetocool.Verifythecoolantlevelinthecoolant recoverytank.
Note:Ifnecessary,refertostep8throughstep9inordertopurgeairfromthecoolingsystem.

2.Starttheengineandruntheengineatlowidle.Increasetheenginerpmtohighidle.Runthe engineathighidleforoneminuteinordertopurgetheairfromthecavitiesoftheengine block.Returntheenginetolowidle.Stoptheengine.
3.Checkthecoolantlevel.Maintainthecoolantlevelwithin13mm(0.5inch)belowthe bottomofthepipeforfilling.Maintainthecoolantlevelwithin13mm(0.5inch)tothe properlevelonthesightglass(ifequipped).
4.Cleanthecoolingsystemfillercap.Inspectthegasketthatisonthecoolingsystemfiller cap.Ifthegasketthatisonthecoolingsystemfillercapisdamaged,discardtheoldcooling systemfillercapandinstallanewcoolingsystemfillercap.Ifthegasketthatisonthe coolingsystemfillercapisnotdamaged,performapressuretest.A9S-8140Pressurizing Pumpisusedtoperformthepressuretest.Thecorrectpressureforthecoolingsystemfiller capisstampedonthefaceofthecoolingsystemfillercap.Ifthecoolingsystemfillercap doesnotretainthecorrectpressure,installanewcoolingsystemfillercap.
5.Starttheengine.Inspectthecoolingsystemforleaksandforproperoperatingtemperature.
