Maintenance
Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoenginecare.Theillustrated,step-by-stepinstructionsare groupedbyfuelconsumption,servicehoursand/orcalendartimemaintenanceintervals.Itemsin themaintenanceschedulearereferencedtodetailedinstructionsthatfollow.
Usefuelconsumptionorservicehourstodetermineintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, annually,etc.)maybeusedinsteadofservicemeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenient schedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicemeterreading.
Recommendedserviceshouldbeperformedattheappropriateintervalsasindicatedinthe MaintenanceIntervalSchedule.Theactualoperatingenvironmentoftheenginealsogovernsthe MaintenanceIntervalSchedule.Therefore,underextremelysevere,dusty,wetorfreezingcold operatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationandmaintenancethanisspecifiedinthe MaintenanceIntervalSchedulemaybenecessary.
Themaintenancescheduleitemsareorganizedforapreventivemaintenancemanagement program.Ifthepreventivemaintenanceprogramisfollowed,aperiodictune-upisnotrequired. Theimplementationofapreventivemaintenancemanagementprogramshouldminimize operatingcoststhroughcostavoidancesresultingfromreductionsinunscheduleddowntimeand failures.
MaintenanceIntervals
Performmaintenanceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Eachleveland/or individualitemsineachlevelshouldbeshiftedaheadorbackdependinguponyourspecific maintenancepractices,operationandapplication.Werecommendthatthemaintenanceschedules bereproducedanddisplayedneartheengineasaconvenientreminder.Wealsorecommendthata maintenancerecordbemaintainedaspartoftheengine'spermanentrecord.

Note:Adjustthefrequencyofcleaningaccordingtotheeffectsoftheoperatingenvironment. Inspecttheaftercoolerfortheseitems:damagedfins,corrosion,dirt,grease,insects,leaves,oil andotherdebris.Cleantheaftercooler,ifnecessary.
Forair-to-airaftercoolers,usethesamemethodsthatareusedforcleaningradiators.
Personalinjurycanresultfromairpressure.
Personalinjurycanresultwithoutfollowingproperprocedure.When usingpressureair,wearaprotectivefaceshieldandprotectiveclothing.
Maximumairpressureatthenozzlemustbelessthan205kPa(30psi) forcleaningpurposes.
Pressurizedairisthepreferredmethodforremovingloosedebris.Directtheairintheopposite directionofthefan'sairflow.Holdthenozzleapproximately6mm(0.25inch)awayfromthe fins.Themaximumairpressureforcleaningpurposesmustbebelow205kPa(30psi)whenthe airnozzleisdeadheaded.Slowlymovetheairnozzleinadirectionthatisparallelwiththetubes. Thiswillremovedebristhatisbetweenthetubes.
Pressurizedwatermayalsobeusedforcleaning.Themaximumwaterpressureforcleaning purposesmustbelessthan275kPa(40psi).Usepressurizedwaterinordertosoftenmud.Clean thecorefrombothsides.
Useadegreaserandsteamforremovalofoilandgrease.Cleanbothsidesofthecore.Washthe corewithdetergentandhotwater.Thoroughlyrinsethecorewithcleanwater.
Aftercleaning,starttheengineandacceleratetheenginetohighidlerpm.Thiswillhelpinthe removalofdebrisanddryingofthecore.Stoptheengine.Usealightbulbbehindthecoreinorder toinspectthecoreforcleanliness.Repeatthecleaning,ifnecessary.
Inspectthefinsfordamage.Bentfinsmaybeopenedwitha"comb".
Note:Ifpartsoftheaftercoolersystemarerepairedorreplaced,aleaktestishighly recommended.
Inspecttheseitemsforgoodcondition:welds,mountingbrackets,airlines,connections,clamps andseals.Makerepairs,ifnecessary.

AftermarketOilAdditives

Caterpillardoesnotrecommendtheuseofaftermarketadditivesinoil.Itisnotnecessarytouse aftermarketadditivesinordertoachievetheengine'smaximumservicelifeorratedperformance. Fullyformulated,finishedoilsconsistofbaseoilsandofcommercialadditivepackages.These additivepackagesareblendedintothebaseoilsatprecisepercentagesinordertohelpprovide finishedoilswithperformancecharacteristicsthatmeetindustrystandards.
Therearenoindustrystandardteststhatevaluatetheperformanceorthecompatibilityof aftermarketadditivesinfinishedoil.Aftermarketadditivesmaynotbecompatiblewiththe finishedoil'sadditivepackage,whichcouldlowertheperformanceofthefinishedoil.The aftermarketadditivecouldfailtomixwiththefinishedoil.Thiscouldproducesludgeinthe crankcase.Caterpillardiscouragestheuseofaftermarketadditivesinfinishedoils.
ToachievethebestperformancefromaCaterpillarengine,conformtothefollowingguidelines:
•SelecttheproperCaterpillaroiloracommercialoilthatmeetstheCaterpillar recommendations.
•Seetheappropriate"LubricantViscosities"tableinordertofindthecorrectoilviscosity gradeforyourengine.
•Atthespecifiedinterval,servicetheenginecompartment.Usenewoilandinstallanewoil filter.
•PerformmaintenanceattheintervalsthatarespecifiedintheOperationandMaintenance Manual,"MaintenanceIntervalSchedule".

Donotoperatetheengineuntilthereasonfortheairbypassisidentified andcorrected.Failuretoheedthiswarningcouldleadtoproperty damage,personalinjury,ordeathtotheoperatororbystanders.
Thefunctionofthepressurereliefvalveistobypassairwhenthereisamalfunctionintheair compressorsystem.
Thepressurereliefvalvereleasesairat1723kPa(250psi).Donotstandnearthepressurerelief valve.Compressedairmaybereleasedwithoutwarning.Allpersonnelshouldalsostayclearof theaircompressorwhentheengineisoperatingandtheaircompressorisexposed.

1.Thevanesoftheairstartingmotorarelubricatedwithafinemistofoilfromtheairstarting motorlubricator.Checkthelevelofoilinlubricatorbowl(2).Iftheoillevelislessthan1/2, addoiltothelubricatorbowl.
2.EnsurethattheairsupplytothelubricatorisOFF.
3.Removetheplug.Pouroilintolubricatorbowl(2).Use"10W"oilfortemperaturesthatare greaterthan0°C(32°F).Useairtooloilfortemperaturesthatarebelow0°C(32°F).
4.Installtheplug.
OilerFeedAdjustment
Ifnecessary,adjustthelubricatorinordertoreleaseapproximatelytwodropsoffluidper30 secondsintothestartingmotorairstream.
1.EnsurethatthefuelsupplytotheengineisOFF.
2.Turnadjustmentknob(3)clockwiseuntiltheadjustmentknoblocks.
3.Turnadjustmentknob(3)counterclockwisefor1/4turns.
NOTICE
Donotcranktheenginecontinuouslyformorethan30seconds.Allow thestartingmotortocoolfortwominutesbeforecrankingtheengine again.
4.Crankthestartingmotorfortensecondsandobservetheexhaustairfromthemufflersof thestartingmotor.Lookforoilmist.Aslightoilmistshouldbebarelyvisible.
Ifnomistisobserved,orifthemistisexcessive,rotateadjustmentknob(3)inincrementsof1/16 inordertoincreaseordecreasetheoilmist.Repeatthestartingmotorcrankingandobserveuntil themistissatisfactory.
Note:Dripratesshouldonlybemadeunderanaveragesteadyflowcondition.Onceasteadyflow conditionisestablished,thelubricatorwillautomaticallyadjustthedriprateinproportiontothe variationsinairflow.

Whenopeningthedrainvalve,wearprotectivegloves,aprotectiveface shield,protectiveclothing,andprotectiveshoes.Pressurizedaircould causedebristobeblownandresultinpersonalinjury.
1.Openthedrainvalvethatisonthebottomoftheairtank.Allowthemoistureandsediment todrain.
2.Closethedrainvalve.

Caterpillarrecommendsascheduledinspectionofthealternator.Inspectthealternatorforloose connectionsandproperbatterycharging.Inspecttheammeter(ifequipped)duringengine operationinordertoensureproperbatteryperformanceand/orproperperformanceofthe electricalsystem.Makerepairs,asrequired.
Checkthealternatorandthebatterychargerforproperoperation.Ifthebatteriesareproperly charged,theammeterreadingshouldbeverynearzero.Allbatteriesshouldbekeptcharged.The batteriesshouldbekeptwarmbecausetemperatureaffectsthecrankingpower.Ifthebatteryistoo cold,thebatterywillnotcranktheengine.Thebatterywillnotcranktheengine,evenifthe engineiswarm.Whentheengineisnotrunforlongperiodsoftimeoriftheengineisrunfor shortperiods,thebatteriesmaynotfullycharge.Abatterywithalowchargewillfreezemore easilythanabatterywithafullcharge.

Ensureproperventilationforbatteriesthatareinanenclosure.Follow theproperproceduresinordertohelppreventelectricalarcsand/or sparksnearbatteries.Donotsmokewhenbatteriesareserviced.
Thebatterycablesorthebatteriesshouldnotberemovedwiththe batterycoverinplace.Thebatterycovershouldberemovedbeforeany servicingisattempted.
Removingthebatterycablesorthebatterieswiththecoverinplacemay causeabatteryexplosionresultinginpersonalinjury.
Note:Alwaysrecycleabattery.Neverdiscardabattery.Returnusedbatteriestoanappropriate recyclingfacility.
1.TurnthekeystartswitchtotheOFFposition.Removethekeyandallelectricalloads.
2.TurnOFFthebatterycharger.Disconnectthecharger.
3.TurnbatteryisolatorswitchtoOFFposition.
4.TheNEGATIVE"-"cableconnectstheNEGATIVE"-"batteryterminaltotheground plane.DisconnectthecablefromtheNEGATIVE"-"batteryterminal.
5.ThePOSITIVE"+"cableconnectsthePOSITIVE"+"batteryterminaltothestartingmotor. DisconnectthecablefromthePOSITIVE"+"batteryterminal.
Note:Alwaysrecycleabattery.Neverdiscardabattery.Returnusedbatteriestoan appropriaterecyclingfacility.
6.Removetheusedbattery.
7.Installthenewbattery.
Note:Beforethecablesareconnected,ensurethatthekeystartswitchisOFF.
8.ConnectthecablefromthestartingmotortothePOSITIVE"+"batteryterminal.

Whentheenginehasnotrunforlongorshortperiodsoftime,thebatteriesmaynotfullyrecharge. Ensureafullchargetohelppreventthebatteryfromfreezing.
Inwarmerclimates,checktheelectrolytelevelmorefrequently.
Ensurethattheelectrolytelevelis13mm(0.5inch)abovethetopoftheseparators.
Alllead-acidbatteriescontainsulfuricacidwhichcanburntheskinand clothing.Alwayswearafaceshieldandprotectiveclothingwhen workingonornearbatteries.
1.Removethefillercaps.Maintaintheelectrolyteleveltothe"FULL"markonthebattery.
Iftheadditionofwaterisnecessary,usedistilledwater.Ifdistilledwaterisnotavailable, usecleanwaterthatislowinminerals.Donotuseartificiallysoftenedwater.
2.Checktheconditionoftheelectrolytewiththe245-5829CoolantBatteryTester Refractometer.
3.Keepthebatteriesclean.
Cleanthebatterycasewithoneofthefollowingcleaningsolutions:
Amixtureof0.1kg(0.2lb)ofbakingsodaand1L(1qt)ofcleanwater
Amixtureof0.1L(0.11qt)ofammoniaand1L(1qt)ofcleanwater
Thoroughlyrinsethebatterycasewithcleanwater.
Usethe1U-9921BatteryServiceTooltocleanthebatteryterminals.Useawirebrushto cleanthecableclamps.Cleantheitemsuntilthesurfacesarebrightorshiny.DONOT removematerialexcessively.Excessiveremovalofmaterialcancausetheclampstofit improperly.Coattheclampsandtheterminalswith5N-5561SiliconeLubricant,petroleum jellyorMPGM.

BatteryorBatteryCable-Disconnect

Thebatterycablesorthebatteriesshouldnotberemovedwiththe batterycoverinplace.Thebatterycovershouldberemovedbeforeany servicingisattempted.
Removingthebatterycablesorthebatterieswiththecoverinplacemay causeabatteryexplosionresultinginpersonalinjury.
1.TurnthestartswitchtotheOFFposition.Turntheignitionswitch(ifequipped)totheOFF positionandremovethekeyandallelectricalloads.
2.Disconnectthenegativebatteryterminalatthebatterythatgoestothestartswitch.Ensure thatthecablecannotcontacttheterminal.Whenfour12voltbatteriesareinvolved,the negativesideoftwobatteriesmustbedisconnected.
3.Tapetheleadsinordertohelppreventaccidentalstarting.
4.Proceedwithnecessarysystemrepairs.Reversethestepsinordertoreconnectallofthe cables.

Belt-Inspect

Inspection
Belttensionshouldbecheckedinitiallybetweenthefirst20to40hoursofengineoperation.
Aftertheinitialcheck,thebelttensionshouldbecheckedatEveryPMLevel1orThreeMonths.
Tomaximizetheengineperformance,inspectthebeltsforwearandforcracking.Replacebelts thatarewornordamaged.
Forapplicationsthatrequiremultipledrivebelts,replacethebeltsinmatchedsets.Replacingonly onebeltofamatchedsetwillcausethenewbelttocarrymoreloadbecausetheolderbeltis stretched.Theadditionalloadonthenewbeltcouldcausethenewbelttobreak.
Ifthebeltsaretooloose,vibrationcausesunnecessarywearonthebeltsandpulleys.Loosebelts mayslipenoughtocauseoverheating.
Ifthebeltsaretootight,unnecessarystressesareplacedonthepulleybearingsandonthebelts. Thismayshortentheservicelifeofthecomponents.
Removethebeltguard.Inspecttheconditionandadjustmentofthealternatorbeltsandaccessory drivebelts(ifequipped).
Tocheckthebelttension,apply110N(25lbft)offorcemidwaybetweenthepulleys.Acorrectly adjustedbeltwilldeflect9mm(0.35inch)to15mm(0.59inch).
Ifthebeltdoesnotrequirereplacementoradjustment,installthebeltguard.Ifthebeltrequires adjustmentorreplacement,performthefollowingproceduretoadjustthebelttension.
•Iftheengineisequippedwitharefrigerantcompressor(airconditioner),thebeltforthefan drive,thealternator,andtheaccessorieswillhaveanautomaticbelttensioner.
•Iftheengineisnotequippedwitharefrigerantcompressor,thealternatorisusedtoadjust thebelttension.
