Air Cleaner - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure
1. Raise the access panel on the left side of the machine.

2. Remove clip (1) .
3. Rotate air cleaner cover (2) counterclockwise. Remove air cleaner cover (2) .

4. Remove two air filter elements (3) from inside air cleaner housing (4) .

5. Remove two bolts (5) and (7). Remove brace (6) .

6. Remove bolt (11). Remove battery clamp (10). Remove cover (8). Remove two battery cables (9). Remove battery (12) .

7. Loosen hose clamp (13). Remove air hose (14) from air cleaner housing (4) .

9. Remove fitting and tube (16) from air cleaner housing (4). Remove air cleaner housing (4) .
Installation Procedure

1. Install fitting and tube (16) into air cleaner housing (4) .

2. Install air cleaner housing (4) into position. Secure air cleaner housing (4) with two bolts (15) .

3. Install air hose (14) onto air filter housing (4). Install hose clamp (13) in the proper position. Tighten hose clamp (13) .

4. Install battery (12). Install two battery cables (9) to the proper terminals. Install cover (8). Install battery clamp (10). Secure battery clamp (10) with bolt (11) .

5. Install brace (6). Secure brace (6) with two bolts (5) and (7) .

6. Install two air filter elements (3) into air cleaner housing (4) .

7. Install air cleaner cover (2). Rotate air cleaner cover (2) clockwise.
Note: Air cleaner cover (2) has two tabs on the back of the cover. The tabs will engage in the proper position on air cleaner housing (4) .
8. Install clip (1) in order to secure air cleaner cover (2) .
9. Close the access panel on the left side of the machine.

Alternator - Remove and Install
SMCS - 1405-010
Removal Procedure
1. Open the hood.
2. Open the access door on the left side of the machine.
3. Move the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
4. Remove the battery clamp. Remove the battery cover. Disconnect two battery cables on the battery. Move the battery cables away from the terminals.

5. Remove four bolts (1) from belt guard (2) .
6. Remove belt guard (2) .

7. Remove bolt (4). Move the alternator in order to release alternator belt (5) .
8. Remove bolt (7). Remove bracket (6) .
9. Remove bolt (8). Remove the nut and the washer. Remove alternator (3) from the upper alternator bracket.

10. Rotate alternator (3) in order to allow access to the electrical connections.

11. Disconnect electrical connection (9) and (10) from alternator (3) .
12. Remove alternator (3) .

1. Install alternator (3) in position in order to allow access to the electrical connections.

2. Install electrical connectors (10) and (9) to rear of alternator (3) .

3. Install alternator (3) on the alternator bracket.
4. Install bolt (8). Install the washer and the nut in order to secure alternator (3) .
5. Install bracket (6). Secure bracket (6) with bolt (7) and bolt (4) .
Note: Do not tighten bolt (4) at this time.
6. Install alternator belt (5) on the alternator pulley.
Note: Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7208 for the correct tightening procedure for the alternator belt.
7. Tighten bolt (4) after the proper belt tension is achieved.

8. Install belt guard (2) on the front of the engine.
9. Secure belt guard (2) with four bolts (1) .
10. Connect both terminals of the battery. Install the battery cover. Install the battery clamp.
11. Move the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.
12. Close the access door on the left side of the machine.
13. Start the engine. Check the amp gauge for the proper operation of the alternator.
14. Shut the engine OFF. Check the alternator belt for the proper tension.
15. Close the hood.

Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure Table 1
1. Open the access panel on the left side of the machine.
2. Move the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

3. Remove bolt (4). Remove battery clamp (3). Remove cover (1). Remove two battery cables (2) from the battery.

4. Loosen four bolts (5). Bolts (5) secure bottom guard (6) to the machine frame.

5. Install Tooling (A) under the center of bottom guard (6). Apply pressure to bottom guard (6). Remove four bolts (5) .

6. Open the rubber cover on starter terminal (13). Loosen the screw on starter terminal (13). Remove wire (12) from starter terminal (13).
7. Move rubber cover (9) from starter terminal (8). Remove the nut and the washer from terminal (8). Remove wires (7), (10) and (11) from starter terminal (8) .

8. Remove three nuts and washers (14) from the studs. Remove electric starting motor (15) from the flywheel housing. The weight of the electric starting motor is 8.5 kg (19 lb).

1. Install electric starting motor (15) in position on the three studs. The weight of electric starting motor (15) is 8.5 kg (19 lb). Install three nuts and washers (14) that secure electric starting motor (15) to the flywheel.

2. Install wires (11), (10) and (7) onto starter terminal (8). Tighten the nut and the washer on starter terminal (8). Install rubber cover (9) over starter terminal (8) .
3. Install wire (12) into starter terminal (13). Tighten the screw on starter terminal (13). Close the rubber cover on starter terminal (13) .
Note: Remove all corrosion on wires and the starter terminal prior to installation.

4. Place bottom guard (6) on Tooling (A). Move Tooling (A) and bottom guard (6) into position. Raise Tooling (A) .

5. Install four bolts (5). Bolts (5) secure bottom guard (6) to the frame of the machine.
6. Install two battery cables (2) on the battery. Install cover (1). Install battery clamp (3). Install bolt (4). Bolt (4) will secure the battery.
Note: Remove corrosion from the battery terminals prior to the installation of battery cables (2) .
7. Move the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.
8. Close the access panel on the left side of the machine.
9. Start the machine. Check for proper electric starting motor operation.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
1. Inspect rubber mounts (67) and (69) for wear or damage. If wear is noted, replace the rubber mounts with new Caterpillar parts.
2. Install Tooling (B) and Tooling (C) to the engine. Install the engine into the machine. The weight of the engine and the pump drive is 522 kg (1150 lb).
Do not allow damage to the oil filter as the engine is installed. Do not allow any wires, hoses or cables to snag as the engine is installed. Install the engine through the left side of the machine.

3. Install rubber mounts and the hard washers (69) and (67). Install four engine mount bolts (68) and (66).
Note: Two engine mounts are located on the front of the engine. Two engine mounts are located on the rear of the engine. Two front engine mounts (67) are a different size from two rear engine mounts (69).

4. Install air hose (63) on the turbocharger. Tighten hose clamp (64). Hose clamp (64) will secure air hose (63). Install hose (65) on the turbocharger.

5. Remove the plug from fuel hose (62). Install fuel hose (62) on the transfer pump. Install the hose clamp on fuel hose (62). Tighten the hose clamp.

6. Install electrical connector (61) on the sensor on the intake manifold.

7. The teeth of the coupling hub must mesh with the flange of the pump drive.

8. Install a nylon strap around hydraulic pump (60). Install hydraulic pump (60) into the pump drive.
9. Install two bolts (59). Bolts (59) will secure hydraulic pump (60) to adapter plate (58) .

10. Move electrical wires and governor cable into position on adapter plate (58). Install wire tiewraps (57) on the clips. Wire tie-wraps will secure the wires and the governor cable.

11. Remove the plug from fuel hose (56). Install fuel hose (56). Install hose clamp (55). Tighten hose clamp (55) .
12. Install fuel hoses in hose clamps (52) and (54). Install two hose clamps (52) and (54) on the bracket. Secure the hose clamps with bolt (53) and the nut.
