Safety

Thesafetysectionlistsbasicsafetyprecautions.Inaddition,thissectionidentifiesthetextand locationsofwarningsignsandlabelsusedonthemachine.

Readandunderstandthebasicprecautionslistedinthesafetysectionbeforeoperatingorperforming lubrication,maintenance,andrepaironthismachine.

Operation

Theoperationsectionisareferenceforthenewoperatorandarefresherfortheexperiencedoperator. Thissectionincludesadiscussionofgauges,switches,machinecontrols,attachmentcontrols, transportation,andtowinginformation.

Photographsandillustrationsguidetheoperatorthroughcorrectproceduresofchecking,starting, operating,andstoppingthemachine.

Operatingtechniquesoutlinedinthispublicationarebasic.Skillandtechniquesdevelopasthe operatorgainsknowledgeofthemachineanditscapabilities.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)lists theitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelisted underthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepage numberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.Usethe MaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsifthecalendarintervalsprovide moreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading. Performtherecommendedserviceattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Undersevere,dusty,orwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500service hoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery 10servicehoursordaily.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairareessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavy-dutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceof therequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,and ServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,ortorenderinoperative,anyemission-relateddeviceor elementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewithallapplicable regulationsoftheintendedcountrytowhichithasbeenshipped.Certainelementsofthemachineand enginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeairsystem,andcooling systemmaybeemission-relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadversely affectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchas brakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurther information.

ProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Toprovideuniformequipmentidentification,constructionequipmentmanufacturersare movingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentificationnumberingstandard.Non-road machinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplytoallmachinesand generatorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN.Thenewformat willlooklikethefollowing:

Thesteeringsystemishydraulicallycontrolledandwheelscancrush personnelduringmovement.

Usecautionwhenworkingbetweenthewheelsandtheframe.Ifthe wheelsmustbeturned,ensurethatallpersonnelareclearofthe machinebeforeanymovement.

Theairlinestoandfromtheairdryermustbeatatmosphericpressure. Iftheairlinesarenotatatmosphericpressure,personalinjurycould result.Releasetheairpressurefromtheairsystemcompletelybefore performingmaintenance.

Theairdryerislocatedbehindthefrontwheelontherightsideofthemachine.

Whenthedesiccantcartridgeintheairdryerfailstoabsorbwater,thedesiccantcartridgemustbe rebuiltorthedesiccantcartridgemustbereplaced.

1.Parkthevehicleonalevelsurface.Applytheparkingbrakeandchockthetires.

2.Theoperatormuststoptheenginebeforeworkingaroundthevehicle.Turnthedisconnectkey inordertoremovetheelectricalpower.

3.Draintheairpressurefromallreservoirsbeforeworkisstartedonthevehicle.

Note:Ifthereismoistureintheairreservoirs,replacethedesiccantcartridgeorrebuildthe desiccantcartridge.ConsultyourCaterpillardealerforinformationaboutreplacingthe desiccantcartridgeandforinstructionsforrebuildingthedesiccantcartridge.

Note:Smallamountsofmoisturemaybeinthesystemduetocondensationinthesystem. Moisturemayalsobeinthesystemifanairdryerisinstalledonamachinethathasbeen operatingwithoutanairdryer.Severalweeksmayberequiredinordertocompletelydrythe system.

BackupAlarm-Test

SMCS-7406-081

Thebackupalarmalertsthepersonnelbehindthemachinethatthemachineisbackingup.Thebackup alarmislocatedattherearofthemachine.

1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurfaceandstoptheengine.

2.Makesurethattheareabehindthemachineisclearofpersonnelandclearofobstacles.Make surethattheparkingbrakeisengaged.

3.TurntheenginestartswitchtotheONposition.

Note:Donotstarttheengine.

4.TurnthefanspeedswitchtotheOFFpositionandturnofftheentertainmentradio(if equipped).Openadoororawindow.

5.MovethetransmissioncontroltotheREVERSEpositionandlistenforthebackupalarm.The backupalarmshouldsoundimmediately.Thebackupalarmshouldcontinuetosounduntilthe transmissioncontrolismovedoutoftheREVERSEposition.

a.Ifthemachineisequippedwithanaudio-visualbackupalarm,awarninglightontherear ofthemachinewillflashwhenthetransmissioncontrolisintheREVERSEposition.A separatepersonshouldbepositionedatasafedistancefromtherearofthemachinein ordertocheckforproperoperationofthewarninglight.

6.MovethetransmissioncontroltotheNEUTRALposition.

7.Ifthebackupalarmdidnotfunction,orifthebackupalarmdidnotfunctionproperly,contact yourCaterpillardealer.

Belts-Inspect/Adjust/Replace

Inspection

Tomaximizetheengineperformance,inspectthebeltforwearandforcracking.Checkthebelt tension.Adjustthebelttensioninordertominimizebeltslippage.Beltslippagewilldecreasethelife ofthebelt.

Tocheckthebelttension,refertotheEngineSpecifications,"BeltTensionChart".Acorrectly adjustedbeltwilldeflect13to19mm(0.50to0.75inch).

Note:Thebelttensionfortheenginefanisspringapplied.Thefandrivebeltcannotbeadjusted.If thefandrivebeltisloose,seetheEngineSupplementDisassemblyandAssembly,"FanDriveRemove"forinstructionsonreplacementofthespring.Ifthefandrivebeltiscrackedorworn,refer totheEngineSupplementDisassemblyandAssembly,"FanDrive-Install"forreplacement information.
