MaintenanceIntervalSchedule

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenient servicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedservice shouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecified intheMaintenanceIntervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atEvery500Service Hoursor3Months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderEvery250ServiceHoursorMonthlyand Every10ServiceHoursorDaily.

Thismachineisequippedwithadirectinjection3412EengineincorporatingtheHydraulically actuated,ElectronicallycontrolledUnitInjector(HEUI).The773Dand775Dtruckshaveaseven speedtransmissionandaredesignedprimarilyformovingmaterial.

GeneralCoolantInformation

Manyenginefailuresarerelatedtothecoolingsystem.Coolingsystemfailuresincludethefollowing problems:overheating,leakageofthewaterpump,pluggedradiators,andcylinderlinerpitting.These failurescouldbeavoidedwithpropercoolingsystemmaintenance.Maintenanceoftheenginecoolant isimportanttotheenginelifeandtotheperformance.Thismaintenanceisasimportantasfuel quality.Thismaintenanceisasimportantasthemaintenanceofthesystemforlubricatingoil.

Coolantisnormallycomposedofthreeelements:

*Water

*Additives

*Glycol

NeverusewateralonewithoutSupplementalCoolantAdditive(SCA's) orinhibitedcoolant.Wateraloneiscorrosiveatengineoperating temperaturesanddoesnotprovideadequateboilprotection.

Distilledwaterordeionizedwaterisrecommendedforuseincoolingsystems.Donotusehardtap waterorsaltsoftenedtapwaterinenginecoolingsystems.Ifdistilledwaterordeionizedwaterisnot available,usewaterthatmeetstheminimumacceptablerequirementsthatarelistedinthefollowing table.

Additives

CoolantAdditiveshelpinthefollowingways:

*Preventingrustfromforming

*Preventingscaleandmineraldepositsfromforming

*Protectingmetalsfromcorroding

*Preventingcavitationoftheliner

*Preventingcoolantfromfoaming

Manyadditivesaredepletedduringengineoperationandtheseadditivesneedtobereplaced.Thiscan bedonethroughtheadditionofSupplementalCoolantAdditives(SCA's)toDieselEngine Antifreeze/Coolant(DEAC)orbyaddingExtendertoExtendedLifeCoolant(ELC).

Additivesmustbeaddedattheproperconcentration.Overconcentrationofadditivescancausethe inhibitorstodropout-of-solution.Thiscancauseagelcompoundtoformintheradiator.Anover concentrationofadditivescanproducedepositsonwaterpumpsealsthatcancausewaterpumpseal leakage.Alowconcentrationofadditivescanproducethefollowingproblems:

*Pitting

*Cavitationerosion

*Rust

Glycolinthecoolantprovidesanti-boilprotectionandfreezeprotection.Glycolinthecoolant preventswaterpumpcavitation.Glycolinthecoolantalsoreducescylinderlinerpitting.Foroptimum performance,Caterpillarrecommendsasolutionthatcontainsa1:1mixtureofwaterandofglycol.

NOTE:Caterpillarengineswithair-to-airaftercoolingrequireaminimumof30percentglycolin ordertopreventwaterpumpcavitation.

Mostconventionalheavy-dutycoolant/antifreezesuseethyleneglycol.Propyleneglycolmayalsobe used.Inamixturethatis50percentwater,ethyleneglycolandpropyleneglycolhavesimilar propertiesthatarerelativetothefollowingelements:heattransfer,freezeprotection,controlof corrosion,andcompatibilityoftheseal.Checktheglycollevelofthecoolantsystemwiththe1U7298CoolantTesterGroup(°C)orwiththe1U-7297CoolantTesterGroup(°F).Thefollowingtables definethefreezeprotectionforethyleneglycolandforpropyleneglycol.

NOTICE

Donotusepropyleneglycolinconcentrationthatexceed50percent glycolbecauseofpropyleneglycol'sreducedheattransfercapability. Useethyleneglycolinconditionsthatrequireadditionalfreezeorantiboilprotection.

ThefollowingtwocoolantsareusedinCaterpillarmachineengines:

Preferred-CaterpillarExtendedLifeCoolant(ELC)oracommercialELCthatmeetstheCaterpillar specification(EC-1)

Acceptable-ACaterpillarDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant(DEAC)oracommercialheavy-duty coolant-antifreezethatmeets"ASTMD4985"or"ASTMD5345"specifications.

NOTICE

Donotuseacommercialcoolant/antifreezethatonlymeetsthe"ASTM D3306"specification.Thistypeofcoolant/antifreezeismadeforlight dutyautomotiveapplications.

Caterpillarrecommendsa1:1mixtureofwaterandglycol.Thismixtureofwaterandglycolwill provideoptimumheavy-dutycoolant/antifreezeperformance.

NOTE:CaterpillarDEACdoesnotrequireatreatmentwithanSCAattheinitialfill.Acommercial heavy-dutycoolant/antifreezethatmeets"ASTMD4985"or"ASTMD5345"specificationsrequiresa treatmentwithanSCAattheinitialfill.

ExtendedLifeCoolant(ELC)

CaterpillarprovidesExtendedLifeCoolant(ELC)foruseinthefollowingapplications:

*Heavy-dutydieselengines

*Naturalgasengines

*Automotiveapplications

TheCaterpillarELCanti-corrosionpackageisdifferentthatothercoolants.CaterpillarELCisan ethyleneglycolbasecoolant.However,CaterpillarELCcontainsorganiccorrosioninhibitorsandanti -foamagentswithfewernitritesthanothercoolants.CaterpillarELChasbeenformulatedwiththe correctamountsoftheseadditivesinordertoprovidesuperiorcorrosionprotectionforallmetalsin thecoolingsystemofdieselengines.

CaterpillarELCextendstheservicelifeofthecoolantto6000servicehoursorsixyears.ELCdoes notrequireafrequentadditionofaSupplementalCoolantAdditive(SCA).AnExtenderistheonly additionalmaintenancethatisneededat3,000servicehoursorthreeyears.

ELCisavailableina1:1premixedcoolingsolutionwithdistilledwater.A1:1premixedsolutionof ELCwilllowerthefreezingpointto-36°C(-33°F).ELCConcentratecanbeusedtolowerthe freezingpointto-51°C(-60°F)forarcticconditions.

Containersofseveralsizesareavailable.ConsultyourCaterpillardealerforpartnumbers.

ELCcanberecycled.Thedrainedcoolantmixturecanbedistilledinordertoremovetheethylene glycolandthewater.Theethyleneglycolandthewatercanbereused.ConsultyourCaterpillardealer formoreinformation.

CommercialELC

IfCaterpillarELCisnotused,thenselectacommercialELCthatmeetstheCaterpillarspecification ofEC-1andeitherthe"ASTM5345"specificationorthe"ASTM4985"specification.Donotusea extendedlifecoolantthatdoesnotmeettheEC-1specification.Followthemaintenanceguideforthe coolantfromthesupplierofthecommercialELC.FollowtheCaterpillarguidelinesforthequalityof water.Also,followthespecifiedcoolantchangeinterval.

ELCCoolingSystemMaintenance

CaterpillarELCExtender

CaterpillarELCExtenderisaliquidthatisaddedtothecoolingsystemhalfwaythroughtheELC servicelife.

ThecoolingsystemshouldbetreatedwithExtenderat3000hours(onhalfoftheservicelife).Usethe followingtabletodeterminetherequiredamountoftheCaterpillarExtender.

ChangingtoCaterpillarELC

Tochangefromheavy-dutycoolant/antifreezetotheCaterpillarELC,performthefollowingsteps:

1.Drainthecoolantintoasuitablecontainer.

2.Disposeofthecoolantaccordingtolocalregulations.

3.Flushthesystemwithcleanwaterinordertoremoveanydebris.

4.UseCaterpillarcleanertocleanthesystem.Followtheinstructionsonthelabel.

5.Drainthecleanerintoasuitablecontainer.Flushthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.

6.Fillthecoolingsystemwithcleanwaterandoperatetheengineuntiltheengineiswarmedto49to 66°C(120to150°F).

7.Drainthecoolingsystemintoasuitablecontainerandflushthecoolingsystemwithcleanwater.

8.RepeatSteps6and7untilthesystemiscompletelyclean.

9.FillthecoolingsystemwiththeCaterpillarELC.

10.AttachtheSpecialPublication,PEEP5027,"Label"totheradiatoronthemachineinorderto indicatetheuseofCaterpillarELC.

NOTE:CleanwateristheonlyflushingagentthatisrequiredwhentheELCisdrainedfromthe coolingsystem.

ContaminationoftheELCCoolingSystem

NOTICE

MixingELCwithotherproductsreducestheeffectivenessofthe coolantandshortenscoolantlife.UseonlyCaterpillarproductsor commercialproductsthathavepassedtheCaterpillarEC-1 specificationforpremixedorconcentratecoolants.Useonly CaterpillarExtenderwithCaterpillarELC.Failuretofollowthese recommendationscanresultinshortenedcoolingsystemcomponent life.

IncoolingsystemsthatuseCaterpillarELC,donotaddDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant(DEAC)as amakeupcoolant.ContaminationofELCbyDEACwilldefeattheadvantagesofELC.IftheELCin thecoolingsystembecomescontaminatedbymorethan10percentofthetotalsystemcapacityof DEACorifSCAisadded,performoneofthefollowingoperations:

*Drainthecoolingsystemintoasuitablecontainer.Disposeofthecoolantaccordingtolocal regulations.Flushthesystemwithcleanwater.FillthesystemwiththeCaterpillarELC.

*MaintainthesystemasaconventionalDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant(DEAC).Treatthe systemwithanSCA.Changethecoolantattheintervalthatisrecommendedforthe conventionalDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant(DEAC).

DieselEngineAntifreezeCoolant(DEAC)

Incoolingsystemsthatuseaheavy-dutycoolant/antifreeze,Caterpillarrecommendstheuseofa CaterpillarDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant(DEAC).CaterpillarDEACisanalkalinesingle-phase ethyleneglycoltypeantifreezethatcontainscorrosioninhibitorsandanti-foamagents.

CaterpillarDEACisformulatedwiththecorrectamountofCaterpillarSupplementalCoolant Additive(SCA).DonotuseSCAattheinitialfillwhenDEACisused.Thecoolantthatisinthe enginesofCaterpillarmachinesshouldbesampledafterevery250hoursofoperation.Theresultsof thecoolantsamplewillregulatetheadditionsoftheSCA.ThelifeofthecoolantfortheCaterpillar DEACis3000hoursoreverythreeyears.

CaterpillarDEACisavailableaseitheraconcentrateora1:1premixedcoolingsolution.If concentratedCaterpillarDEACisused,Caterpillarrecommendsdilutionwithdistilledwaterorwith deionizedwater.Ifdistilledwaterordeionizedwaterisnotavailable,refertotheOperationand MaintenanceManual,SEBU6250,"GeneralCoolantInformation"inordertodeterminethe requirementsforacceptablewater.

CommercialHeavy-DutyCoolant/AntifreezesandSCA

IfCaterpillarDEACisnotused,selectaheavy-dutycoolant/antifreezewithalowsilicatecontentthat meets"ASTMD4985"or"ASTMD5345".Whenacommercialheavy-dutycoolant/antifreezeis used,thesystemmustbetreatedwithCaterpillarSCAtoaconcentrationlevelthatisbetween3 percentand6percentbyvolumeofthesystem.IfaCaterpillarSCAisnotused,selectacommercial SCAwithaminimumconcentrationof1200mgperliter(70grainspergallon)or1200partsper millionofnitrites.FollowtheSCArecommendedguidelinesforthemaintenanceofthecoolant.Inall cases,theCaterpillarguidelinesforacceptablewatermustbefollowed.

NOTE:WhenyouarenotusingaCaterpillarDEAC,thecoolingsystemmustbedrainedonceduring everyyear.Thecoolingsystemmustbeflushedatthistimeaswell.

CoolingSystemMaintenance NOTICE

Neveroperatewithoutthermostatsinthecoolingsystem.Thermostats maintaintheenginecoolantattheproperoperatingtemperature. Coolingsystemproblemscandevelopwithoutthermostats.

Checkthesolutionofcoolant/antifreeze(glycolconcentration)frequentlyinordertoensureadequate freezeprotectionandprotectionfromboiling.Checktheglycollevelofthecoolantsystemwiththe 1U-7298CoolantTesterGroup(°C)orwiththe1U-7297CoolantTesterGroup(°F).Consultyour Caterpillardealerforinformationoncoolanttesters.

SupplementalCoolantAdditive(SCA)

CaterpillarSCAeffectivelypreventscorrosiononallmetalsandCaterpillarSCAeffectivelyprevents theformationofmineraldeposits.CaterpillarSCAalsopreventscavitationofthelinerandCaterpillar SCAeliminatesfoamingofthecoolant.

TesttheSCAconcentrationorsubmitacoolantsampletoyourCaterpillardealerateveryoilchange. Afterevery250servicehours,liquidSCAoraSCAmaintenanceelementmaybeneeded.SCA additionsarebasedontheresultsofcoolantanalysis.YourCaterpillardealerhastestkitsthatwill evaluatetheconcentrationofadditivesinCaterpillarDEAC.

ThefollowingtableindicatestheamountofCaterpillarSCAthatisneededattheinitialfilltotreat commercialheavy-dutycoolant/antifreezes.ThetablealsoshowstheadditionofanSCAforeither liquidSCAorforthemaintenanceelementsofaSCA.Theseadditionsareforcommercialheavy-duty coolant/antifreezesandforCaterpillarDEAC.

NOTE:Duetotheindividualengineapplications,themaintenancepracticesneedtobeperiodically reviewedinordertomaintainthecoolingsystem.

CleaningtheHeavy-DutyCoolingSystem

CaterpillarCoolingSystemCleanersaredesignedtocleanthesystemofharmfulscaleandof corrosion.CaterpillarCleanersdissolvemineralscale,corrosionproducts,lightoilcontamination,and sludge.Fortherecommendedserviceinterval,refertotheOperationandMaintenanceManual, "MaintenanceIntervalSchedule"foryourmachine.

ExtendedLifeCoolant(ELC)CoolingSystemMaintenance

NOTICE

UseonlyCaterpillarproductsorcommercialproductsthathave passedCaterpillarEC-1specificationforpremixedorconcentrated coolants.

UseonlyCaterpillarExtenderwithExtendedLifeCoolant.

MixingExtendedLifeCoolantwithotherproductsreducesthe ExtendedLifeCoolantservicelife.Failuretofollowthe recommendationscanreducecoolingsystemcomponentslifeunless appropriatecorrectiveactionisperformed.

Forthecorrectbalanceofantifreezeandofadditives,propercareshouldbetakeninordertomaintain theconcentrationofExtendedLifeCoolant(ELC).Loweringtheproportionofantifreezelowersthe proportionofadditive.Thiswilllowertheabilityofthecoolanttoprotectthesystemfrompitting, fromcavitation,fromerosion,andfromdeposits.

ProperAdditionstotheExtendedLifeCoolant

NOTE:DonotaddELCConcentrateasamakeupsolutionforaroutinecoolingsystemtop-off.The additionoftheconcentratedExtendedLifeCoolantwillincreasetheconcentrationofglycolinthe coolingsystem.

Duringthenormalmaintenance,usethepremixedELCasacoolingsystemtop-off.Thiswillbring thecoolantuptotheproperlevel.UseELCoruseacoolantthatmeetsCaterpillarspecifications(EC1).Ifthepropercoolantisnotavailable,usedistilledwaterorusedeionizedwater.Checktheglycol levelofthecoolantsystemwiththe1U-7298CoolantTesterGroup(°C)orwiththe1U-7297Coolant TesterGroup(°F).UseELCConcentratetorestoretheproperglycolconcentrationinthecoolant system.Thisshouldbedonebeforetheengineisexposedtofreezingtemperatures.

NOTICE

Donotuseaconventionalcoolanttotop-offacoolingsystemusing ExtendedLifeCoolant.

Donotusesupplementalcoolantadditives(SCA)otherthanExtender incoolingsystemsfilledwithExtendedLifeCoolant.

NOTE:NocleaningagentsneedtobeusedwhenacoolingsystemthatisalreadyusingELCis cleaned.

CleanwateristheonlycleaningagentthatisrequiredwhenELCisdrainedfromthecoolingsystem.

ELCcanberecycled.Thedrainedcoolantmixturecanbedistilled.Thedistillationprocesscan removetheethyleneglycolandthewater.ConsultyourCaterpillardealerformoreinformation.

Afteryoudrainthecoolingsystemandafteryourefillthecoolingsystem,operatetheenginewhile theradiatorfillercapisremoved.Operatetheengineuntilthecoolantreachesthenormaloperating temperatureanduntilthecoolantlevelstabilizes.Asneeded,addthecoolantmixtureinordertofill thesystemtotheproperlevel.

ConventionalCoolant/AntifreezeCoolingSystemMaintenance

WhenyouinitiallyfillthecoolingsystemwithCaterpillarDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant,itisnot necessarytoaddaSupplementalCoolantAdditive.CaterpillarDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolant alreadycontainssupplementalcoolantadditive.Whenyouinitiallyfillthecoolingsystemwitha commercialcoolantthatmeetstherequirementsof"ASTMD4985",addasupplementalcoolant additive.ThesupplementalcoolantadditiveinCaterpillarDieselEngineAntifreeze/Coolantandin commercialcoolantsmustbereplenishedatregularserviceintervals.Refertothetableinthe OperationandMaintenanceManual,SEBU6250,"SupplementalCoolantAdditive(SCA)"forthe properquantityofliquidsupplementalcoolantadditive.

S·O·SCoolantAnalysis

TestingthecoolantcanbedoneatyourCaterpillardealer.CaterpillarS·O·SCoolantAnalysisisthe bestwaytomonitortheconditionofyourcoolantandyourcoolingsystem.S·O·SCoolantAnalysisis aprogramthatisbasedonperiodicsamples.

LevelI:

LevelIisabasicanalysiswhichshouldbeperformedateveryoilchangeorafterevery250hoursof use.

Thefollowingitemsaretested:

*GlycolConcentration

*ConcentrationofSCA

*pH

*Conductivity

Theresultsarereported,andappropriaterecommendationsaremadeaccordingtotheresults.

LevelII:

LevelIIisacomprehensiveanalysiswhichshouldbeperformedduringsemi-annualmaintenanceor afterevery1000hoursofuse.

MeasureOilLevel

Thedipstickislocatedontherightsideplatformunderthehood.

1.Themachinemustbelevelandtheparkingbrakeengaged.

2.Beforestartingtheengine,theoillevelmustbeattheFmarkontheENGINESTOPPEDsideof thedipstick(1).

3.Withtheenginerunningandtheoilwarm,maintaintheoillevelbetweentheLOWIDLEmarkson theENGINERUNNINGsideofthedipstick.

4.Addoilthroughfilltube(2)ifnecessary.

Transmission,Hoist,ConverterandBrakeHydraulicTanks

CheckOilLevels

Checkthetransmissionsightgauges(1)and(2)andthehoistconverterandbrakehydraulictanksight gauge(3)oillevels.

Checkbothsystemswiththebody(bed)lowered,enginestoppedandtheoilcold.

Beforetheengineisstartedandtheoiliscold,theoilmustbeintheGREENRANGEofthe transmissionlowersightgauge(1).

NOTE:Ifthesystemhasbeendrained,itwillbenecessarytostoptheengineandaddoilseveral times.

Theuppersightgauge(2)shouldbeusedasthefinalcheckfortheproperoperatingrange.Theoil mustbeintheGREENRANGEoftheuppersightgauge(2)withtheoilatnormaloperating temperature,theenginerunningatlowidleandthetransmissioninneutral.

Checkthehoist,converterandbrakehydraulictankoillevel.TheoilmustbetotheFULLCOLD markinsightgauge(3).Removeoilfillercapstoaddoilifnecessary.Ifthesystemhasbeendrained, itwillbenecessarytostoptheengineandaddoilseveraltimes.
