Thismanualcontainssafetyinformation,operationinstructions,transportationinformation,lubrication informationandmaintenanceinformation.

Somephotographsorillustrationsinthispublicationshowdetailsorattachmentsthatcanbedifferentfrom yourmachine.Guardsandcoversmighthavebeenremovedforillustrativepurposes.

Continuingimprovementandadvancementofproductdesignmighthavecausedchangestoyourmachine whicharenotincludedinthispublication.Read,studyandkeepthismanualwiththemachine.

Readandunderstandthebasicprecautionslistedinthesafetysectionbeforeoperatingorperforming lubrication,maintenanceandrepaironthismachine.

Operation

Theoperationsectionisareferenceforthenewoperatorandarefresherfortheexperiencedoperator.This sectionincludesadiscussionofgauges,switches,machinecontrols,attachmentcontrols,transportationand towinginformation.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)liststhe itemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelistedunderthe "WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepagenumberforthestep-bystepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.UsetheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule asanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenientservicing schedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedserviceshouldalwaysbe performedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500servicehoursor 3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery10service hoursordaily.

CaliforniaProposition65Warning

DieselengineexhaustandsomeofitsconstituentsareknowntotheStateofCaliforniatocausecancer,birth defects,andotherreproductiveharm.

Batteryposts,terminalsandrelatedaccessoriescontainleadandleadcompounds.Washhandsafter handling.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairisessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperatingcorrectly.As theheavydutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceoftherequired maintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,andServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,ortrading enginesormachinestoremove,alter,orrenderinoperativeanyemissionrelateddeviceorelementofdesign installedonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewiththeregulations(40CFRPart89).Certain elementsofthemachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeair systemandcoolingsystemmaybeemissionrelatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadverselyaffect performancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchasbrakes,steering, androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurtherinformation.

CatProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theCatProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Inanefforttoprovideuniformequipmentidentification,Caterpillarandotherconstruction equipmentmanufacturersaremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentification numberingstandard.Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplyto allCatmachinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN. Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

1.Caterpillar'sWorldManufacturingCode(characters1-3)

2.MachineDescriptor(characters4-8)

3.CheckCharacter(character9)

4.MachineIndicatorSection(MIS)orProductSequenceNumber(characters10-17).Thesewerepreviously referredtoastheSerialNumber.

MachinesandgeneratorsetsproducedbeforeFirstQuarter2001willmaintaintheir8characterPINformat.

Componentssuchasengines,transmissions,axles,etc.andworktoolswillcontinuetousean8character SerialNumber(S/N).

Wheninspectingthevalverotators,protectiveglassesorfaceshieldand protectiveclothingmustbeworn,tohelppreventbeingburnedbyhot oilorspray.

NOTICE

Avalverotatorwhichdoesnotoperateproperlywillacceleratevalve facewearandvalveseatwearandshortenvalvelife.Ifadamaged rotatorisnotreplaced,valvefacegutteringcouldresultandcause piecesofthevalvetofallintothecylinder.Thiscancausepistonand cylinderheaddamage.

Enginevalverotatorsrotatethevalveswhentheengineruns.Thisrotationdetersdepositsfrombuildingup onthevalvesandthevalveseats.

Performthefollowingstepsaftertheenginevalvelashisset,butbeforethevalvecoversareinstalled: 1.Starttheengineandoperatetheengineatlowidle.

2.Observethetopsurfaceofeachvalverotator.Thevalverotatorsshouldturnslightlywhenthevalves close.

Discardcylindersinasafeplace.Donotpunctureorburncylinders. Keepethercylindersoutofthereachofunauthorizedpersonnel.

1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface.Ensurethattheparkingbrakeisfullyengagedandshutoffthe engine.

3.Loosenthecylinderretainingclamp.Unscrewanddiscardemptyetherstartingaidcylinder(1).

4.Removethegasket.Installanewgasket.Anewgasketisprovidedwitheachnewetherstartingaid cylinder.

5.Installanewetherstartingaidcylinder.Tightentheetherstartingaidcylinderhandtight.Tightenthe cylinderretainingclampsecurely.

Makesurethatalloftheproductidentificationfilmsarelegible.Makesurethattherecommendedprocedures areusedinordertocleantheproductidentificationfilms.Ensurethatalltheproductidentificationfilmsare notdamagedormissing.Cleantheproductidentificationfilmsorreplacethefilms.

HandWashing

Useawetsolutionwithnoabrasivematerialthatcontainsnosolventsandnoalcohol.Useawetsolution witha"pH"valuebetween3and11.Useasoftbrush,arag,oraspongeinordertocleantheproduct identificationfilms.Avoidwearingdownthesurfaceoftheproductidentificationfilmswithunnecessary scrubbing.Ensurethatthesurfaceoftheproductidentificationfilmsisflushedwithcleanwaterandallow theproductidentificationfilmstoairdry.

PowerWashing

Powerwashingorwashingwithpressuremaybeusedinordertocleanproductidentificationfilms. However,aggressivewashingcandamagetheproductidentificationfilms.

Excessivepressureduringpowerwashingcandamagetheproductidentificationfilmsbyforcingwater underneaththeproductidentificationfilms.Waterlessenstheadhesionoftheproductidentificationfilmto theproduct,allowingtheproductidentificationfilmtoliftorcurl.Theseproblemsaremagnifiedbywind. Theseproblemsarecriticalfortheperforatedfilmonwindows.

Toavoidliftingoftheedgeorotherdamagetotheproductidentificationfilms,followtheseimportantsteps:

•Useaspraynozzlewithawidespraypattern.

•Amaximumpressureof83bar(1200psi)

•Amaximumwatertemperatureof50°C(120°F)

•Holdthenozzleperpendiculartotheproductidentificationfilmataminimumdistanceof305mm (12inch).

•Donotdirectastreamofwateratasharpangletotheedgeoftheproductidentificationfilm.

Allearthmovingequipmentispronetoahighdegreeofwear.Regularinspectionsforstructuraldamageare necessary.

Theseinspectionsareparticularlyimportantforthistypeofmachineasthemachinescanexperiencedifficult workcycles.

Regularinspectionscanminimizetheriskofaccidents.Regularinspectionscanreducedowntime.

Theintervalbetweentheseinspectionsdependsonthefollowingfactors:

•Theageofthemachine

•Theseverityoftheapplication

•Theloadsthathavebeencarriedinthemachine

•Theconditionofthehaulroad

•Theamountofroutineservicingthathasbeencarriedout

Theseinspectionsshouldbecarriedoutatintervalsnolongerthan2000servicehours.Oldermachines,or machinesthatareoperatinginsevereapplicationswillrequiremorefrequentinspections.

Ifthemachinehasbeeninvolvedinacollision,orifthemachinehasbeeninvolvedinanykindofaccident, themachinemustbeinspectedthoroughly.Inspectthemachineregardlessofthedateofthelastinspection.

Themachinemustbecleanbeforethemachineisinspected.

Properrepairofframesandstructuresrequiresspecificknowledgeofthefollowingsubjects:

•Materialsthathavebeenusedtomanufacturetheframemembers

•Framememberconstruction

•Repairtechniquesthatarerecommendedbythemanufacturer

ConsultyourCatdealerifrepairsarenecessary.YourCatdealerisqualifiedtocarryoutrepairsonyour behalf.

AllrepairsshouldbecarriedoutbyaCatdealer.Ifyoucarryoutyourownrepairs,contactyourCatdealer foradviceaboutproperrepairtechniques.

Particularattentionshouldbegiventoallweldedstructures.Inspectthefollowingitemsforcracksandfor defects:

•Frontframe

•Frontsuspensiona-frame

•Rearframe

•Oscillatinghitch

•Body NOTICE
